I'm so happy I found this channel a few weeks ago. I plan on never doing a timing belt on an Audi but I still watched this entire video just because of how interesting and how nicely put together your videos are.
You are like the Bob Ross of auto mechanics. Remember Bob Ross? The guy who used to paint on PBS? He was relaxing and easy to follow. You are exactly the same. You conquer a big job like this with calmness and precision!
WOW, I have watched, no joke, about 30-40 videos on how to do this process. You and Justin Ballou are by far the best on how to do this. Thank you so much for posting this process. Is gong to save me tons of money.......
1.8t timing belts are easy on the audis give that a shot first then youll see what i mean. Front bumper cover comes off and support comes loose tho....
I've used your videos for doing all that and more. I had an A6 C5 that I had to change the timing belt, tensioners, water pump, thermostat, cam seals, and crank seal. Eventually I also had to change the cylinder head due to a broken camshaft. I rebuilt the new heads myself and lapped the valves by hand. I won't do that again. Lol Keep up the great videos.
Wow! I’ve driven Hondas and BMW’s all my life and part of the reason is how easy they are to perform maintenance on them. This Audi job is no joke. Good work!
When I did mine, I just pulled the lock carrier completely off to save my back. It's not totally required but a bit less stressful than hunching over it. I skipped the the bolt in the crank and had no issues on the scan tool, but you do have to mark it and watch for movement. Great video.
Great video mate. I've noticed the quality of your videos has increased of late. Liking the longer videos also. With Eric the car guy not doing videos of late this is a good time for you to grab a share of his subscribers.
As always, great video. VERY DETAILED INFORMATION! I have done the timing package on a vw passat using your videos. I don't want to do that again! !! Damn German engineering lol. Keep up the great work.
Love your videos mate. Vw and audi specialist myself and looking at your work ethic is an absolute pleasure. You mention changing out the heads and bottom end. PLEEEEEEASE DO!!!!!!!!! Really excited to see what you have planned. Always wanted to work a big displacement a4 or 6 myself except wanted to go naturally aspirated. Keep up the good work love your channel!!!
That's the type of mechanic work I like to do. Very methodical, in depth, attention to detail oriented, focus driven work that makes the day go by quick (when things go smooth of course lol) it's almost therapeutic... kinda like when You built Legos as a kid, following the directions, finding the right peices and super into it , by the time you were done hours went by but it only felt like minutes.
I have now watched all of the current videos on this job, if I would have watched this one first I may also have the job done, probably in less total time. Thank you, great job.
yeah good time to do the t-stat and the top seals of the motor (valve cover, cam seals, cam plugs, adjuster seals). It's not too bad. Follow directions and have the necessary tools.
Not really, buy normal engines and don't buy the "Premium brands". Like Lexus, Audi, BMW, etc. They always have more stuff around that can fail on you and if you buy the big engines they will be hell to maintain. They are meant for people that don't care about maintenance and just bring it into the shop. I mean it's a biTurbo 5 cylinder 2.7! Get a normal 1.6 VW Golf, 1.3 Toyota Corolla or 1.6 Ford Focus. You'll be thanking yourself and your wallet!
First it's a V6 2.7L and this maintenance is done at 60 thousand miles. These engines average 300,000 miles if the maintenance is done. timing/water pump at 60K, oil changes, spark plugs, filters.
I always have the impression that Audis are not really designed or planned before they start building them, it looks like they improvise while they build it, sort of "will this fit here, no, let us try it this way"
Watching this is better that playing the memory game I used to play as a child. How many parts, in exact order, can you remember to put back exactly. Haha! After watching your quality DIY automobile maintenance and repair videos, I have a new found appreciation for what you and other Audi mechanics do. This video also tells me to never buy one of these Audi's ever. Nice car I know, but the engine service is just too painful; and it's painful to watch. I hope my next car is electric with fewer moving parts and much easier and lesser mechanical maintenance in my opinion. Keep up the good work producing quality videos. Straight and honest talk. Subbed. Liked. :)
Good job 👍 I have the same engine, I remember the first time that I change the timing belt it tooks me almost all day. By the way you forget something, you didn't cover the oil dipstick hole when you open the water pump, I believe that you make an oil change after the timing belt so it's fine.
Thanks for the v6 videos. I was a little conserned dive into the engine before for chain tensioner replacement for my beater but I did it. Ofc with help of ELSA too.
SINCE I RENT AN APARTMENT ON THE EAST SIDE OF MILWAUKEE IF ID HAD PUT THE CAR IN SERVICE POSITION ID HAVE BEEN TOWED SO QUICK MY HEAD WOULD HAVE SPINNED SO AFTER REVIEWING EVERYTHING I REALIZED IT WOULD BE HARDER ACCESSING ALLEN BOLTS IN NON SERVICE POSITION BUT I DID. PEOPLE WERE AMAZED BECAUSE MANY HAD JUST JUNKED THERE PASSATS IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN THE WATERPUMPS WENT BAD BECAUSE THE LABOR N PARTS WERE MORE THAN WHAT THE DAM CAR IS WORTH.
Love your videos, I have a 1998 audi a6 and it's a dream that I found your videos. You are one of some on youtube that got me working on my car. Thanks.
What is the point of using this special tool to lock the camshafts seen they can rotate because of the valve springs pressure ,once you removed the pulleys ? It's good to reinstall the timing belt, but no point using it to uninstall it.
Good point and understood. However my caddy 3.6 V6 with dual overhead cams are driven with chains. The serpentine belt is for peripheral's such as alternator, water pump, AC etc. The belt takes 5 min. to change out. I don't hear a whisper. I don't know why, but I don't hear any chain "noise" as compared to the older cars we knew.
After some thought, as an old mechanic, the reason is probably because today's chains have automatic tensioners that preclude slack and slippage (hence noise). Same as today's serpentine belts vs the old "V" belts!
To everyone who buys Into the video title. It's not that bad. The Audi forums are there for your benefit. The reason this job is hell is because he didnt remove the core support.
If you use your smartphone and take a photograph of the item that you're taking off the engine you know exactly how it goes back on. And with most smartphones you can leave a memo by messaging yourself what size bolts and screws go with each item. this is especially helpful when you're relining things which sometimes get knocked out alignment during reassembly.
Timing belt on the EJ255/57 is about the same pain in the ass. When it comes to head gaskets none come close to the pain an EJ is. Really gotta love these cars to wrench on them.
Um, no. The EJ255 timing belt is a piece of cake compared to most cars, and it's especially easier than this unnecessarily complex Audi. I know as I did the tb, tensioners, and water pump on my LGT a few years ago. Other than the fact that a tool to hold the camshaft sprockets in place would have made the job easier, I found it was a pleasure to work on.
Yay audis! Btw that coolant hose at the thermostat housing is shot. The one end is very swollen and looks like it spent a bunch of time oily. Pretty much any time you see a swollen end on a hose it needs to be replaced as it's a sure sign of impending failure.
good videos. I like how far you have gone so far with your project and taking the time to explain the process every helpful. I have a 01 2.8 and replace the engine twice. Hopefully you get around to the pistons procedure. My cylinder 4 zero compression so deciding to change engine instead of doing the work but with a video like yours i would have more confident for next time. reasons PES G2 installed. car modified to my taste so not getting rid of it yet.
Great video and Wow a lot of work. It's looks like a total tear down. If it's all like that then it's better off to rebuild the whole motor because whenever the next problem comes in same shit all over again gonna happen. Rebuild the whole motor with all new parts and won't worry about it for another 3-5 years. This car wouldn't be my top choice at all after seeing how many parts has to come off before replacing a new part smh.
Should have asked us , we would have told you this was going to be the TBR from Hell, of course, with a dash of purgatory thrown in. Hope you get over the re-occurring nightmares. I'm sure others will be able to recommend a good psychiatrist in your area at reasonable cost, keep up the excellent videos and I do hope you recover quickly.
Try to change Santa Fe timing belt, then you'll see what timing belt replacement from hell is. lol That thing is absolute ridiculousness. Factory manual calls for removing the engine. I'd rather roll her down the hill with a rag in the gas tank than go through that insanity if I'm perfectly honest. And it's a Hyundai on top of it all...
Doing my timing belt and my marks dont match on the pulley, its up but the bigger holes are even with each other on the cams.. car runs fine before. Do i just have to keep rotaing until they match up?
Lol I just did all this to my 2.8, except the heads came off for some bent valves, and I thought it was hilarious when he said "maybe I'll do the bottom end, too, and spend way more money and time than I should" because working on these cars is an addiction. I thought the same thing while I was down to the pistons, totally irrational for a $1000 car.
Great video, however I'm sure some Audi fanboys could get through this service nightmare in half the time, we all know everyone in the comments are master techs!
Many older Ford Explorer Engines are German made, even have E-torx fasteners.. They have timing chains in the back(like some Audis) and you have to pull the engine to service the guides. They often fail.
How is this project going? Got mine all toern down. I won't lie...Im certified but this is a challenging task. Also bought EGT emulators and manual boost controller, boost gauge and k&n filter.
I thought servicing an E36 thermostat is difficult until i watched this video. gosh! looking forward to your next "going deep pretty fast" video. wonder how much this whole season will cost and will that $500 thingy still sticks? lol
at 3:32 you show where the locking pin goes,,,, (I'm doing a 2003 audi a6 quattro 2.7 bi-turbo c5 {exactly like yours}) and it looks like mine has a wire coming out of the top of it, seems weird from what you showed, plus, the 10 mm bolt holding in the cap that I need to remove is in the 4 o'clock position and NOT the 7 o'clock position like I've seen on most vids,,,,, am I missing something here please ???? thank you....
Not sure what ya'll are expecting from this model/make/year of car. Not to mention the engine option this one is fitted on. I have a feeling a lot of people just don't wrench on cars or haven't open the hood of their car in the last decade...
Just buy an older model. 80ies Audi five bangers for example. With China being open to the world market you can fit all the gagdets you want to older cars. Gps Double Dinn, electric heated seats etc
owned 3 audis ,and all them i worked on them my self ,never going back, sometimes i wonder how i managed to work on them ,i had special tools and specific books, feel sorry for you dude, spend all your weekends working on cars.
9:50 Love all that coolant going straight down the dip stick hole and into the oil pan. Probably best to unbolt the water pump before the dip stick tube
Japanese pulleys. :D lol . As far as difficulty of steps, not so much. Just a lot of them. I had to use a snake cam to clean off the gasket material when changing out my volvo 850's timing belt and water pump. That was fun.
I'm so happy I found this channel a few weeks ago. I plan on never doing a timing belt on an Audi but I still watched this entire video just because of how interesting and how nicely put together your videos are.
Never in my life I will have one of these cars but, BUT, I love these videos!!
But tt's bro. That higher timing belt replacemant cost is worth it.
da
Audi TT best when modded in a racecar
I am literally watching this video step-by step on "pause & continue" in my garage doing this same exact job on my 2001 A6 Quattro 2.8L. Good stuff!!
I did the same thing this past weekend. I am sad that it's over, but happy that I get to do it again in 6 or 7 years!
Your camera work is very good, in addition to your great mechanical knowledge. Great work
Thanks! Successfully changed my Audi 2.7t timing belt assembly after watching your video!
I know my way around a wrench, but that one looks a little challenging. I think I will say away from Audis. Good Job and great video.
Well its a twin turbo v6? Yeah It's to be expected.
I bet it's a good money maker though considering not many want to tackle it.
It looks scary but iv done, just lots of parts. You want pain you replace the turbos
Thanks for being a loyal subscriber, those video's I did more than 3 years ago.
I rebuilt my ax: replaced handle and head..
Wow! I’ve driven Hondas and BMW’s all my life and part of the reason is how easy they are to perform maintenance on them. This Audi job is no joke. Good work!

With Eric the car guy not doing videos of late this is a good time for you to grab a share of his subscribers.
He'll be back hopefully. But I'll take all I can get :)
Looks pretty easy actually, lots of access everywhere. I may tackle one of those in the future...
your audio is so crisp and clear thank you for that! other youtubers should take note! another awesome video!
probably one of the best "how to " videos I have seen . great work
As always, great video. VERY DETAILED INFORMATION! I have done the timing package on a vw passat using your videos. I don't want to do that again! !! Damn German engineering lol. Keep up the great work.
joaquin gomez German engineering is the best

My goodness. If you had to service the thermostat you'd be back in that mess? What a job you got there. Great steps on the break down however.
wyattoneable I was thinking the same thing! What a horrible design.
yeah good time to do the t-stat and the top seals of the motor (valve cover, cam seals, cam plugs, adjuster seals). It's not too bad. Follow directions and have the necessary tools.

60k is a little early, anywhere between 60 and 90 is probably alright, with 75 being the target.
I wonder if Audi engineers sit around and flog each other for fun because they sure seem to enjoy the torture they bring to mechanics.
I always have the impression that Audis are not really designed or planned before they start building them, it looks like they improvise while they build it, sort of "will this fit here, no, let us try it this way"
Just wanted to tell you thank you for all the awesome videos you make it easy to understand very helpful
New subscriber. I don't do anything mechanical. I just like to watch pros.
Great video brother.as an audi owner I can tell those cars are fun to drive, pain in the arse when something goes wrong
Watching this is better that playing the memory game I used to play as a child. How many parts, in exact order, can you remember to put back exactly. Haha!

Nice Video , this Audi build is great idea cant wait to watch more , i find it interesting because no one ever does track car build with audi at all
THANKS for this series. I have 2 that need these services done
call the junkyard
I watched this video just to remember what it was like to work on Audi’s. I regret this decision. You helped someone though !
Holy crap! Ive done a couple of timing belts but that looks like a pain in the ass not to mention all the torx and allen tools you need
I did the exact same replacements this summer on my Audi A6 Quattro 2.7T 2000! I feel your pain!!
Wow! Great video man. Watching this video makes me want to stick to only modifying American & Japanese cars from now on.
Good job 👍 I have the same engine, I remember the first time that I change the timing belt it tooks me almost all day. By the way you forget something, you didn't cover the oil dipstick hole when you open the water pump, I believe that you make an oil change after the timing belt so it's fine.
Wow, awesome video as usual. All that for a timing belt and as the previous poster mentioned, what if you just needed to replace a thermostat? Ouch
RareDiamond Ching i payed $615 to replace my thermostat in my a4
I take that you like that car . More than I want to service myself . But none of them are getting simpler . Thanks for showing what it would take .
I had to do a timing belt on an audi many years ago. Last audio I bought or worked on. I wish I had a job crash testing audis! What joy that would be.
lol
Great video. Just done timing belt, seals and pump on my Xterra.
Love your videos, I have a 1998 audi a6 and it's a dream that I found your videos. You are one of some on youtube that got me working on my car. Thanks.

INHO this is UNDER engineered! With the part being so integrated, it should be a chain rather than a wearable belt.
Good point and understood. However my caddy 3.6 V6 with dual overhead cams are driven with chains. Today I have changed seals for water pump and thermostat on '88 Ford Siera with 13 and 17mm wrenches. It took me 30 minutes.
Nice video. Anybody looking to do it, not as tough as it looks. Took me 3.5 - 4 hours the first time I did it.
To everyone who buys Into the video title. It's not that bad. The Audi forums are there for your benefit. The reason this job is hell is because he didnt remove the core support.
might as well throw in performance cams lol keep it up with this series!
You ,my friend, have one boat load of patience!👍👍👍👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Wow, not easy job , Thanks for sharing
it's way simpler than it looks. on your second go around you'll have the front off in no more than a hour
Wow, great video. I've never been this convinced to never get a car like this, ever.
Good morning...now back to the video...
Service position, i.e taking apart the entire front half of the car?? That's Audi for you! Great video btw
I’m in the middle of doing the timing belt on my 98 Audi A4 v6. Fun job, lots to do but it isn’t too bad
Timing belt on the EJ255/57 is about the same pain in the ass. When it comes to head gaskets none come close to the pain an EJ is. Really gotta love these cars to wrench on them.

Just one question:
What are those!!!😂😂😂
Bro great project car.. luv your videos and explanation to details. Keep em up!
And F.D.T.2👍
I bent an audi cam pulley once using a puller like that. I highly suggest the pb blaster like he did on the second one.
I wish I would've found this video earlier because I'm going this on my 97 A4 with the 2.8L V6 and it looks very similar
Complicated car not easy to work with. Thanks for this interesting video.
Atrax R lol at roll her down de Hill with a rag
LOL funny guy, but you're right!
Doing my timing belt and my marks dont match on the pulley, its up but the bigger holes are even with each other on the cams.. car runs fine before. Do i just have to keep rotaing until they match up?
Are those harbor freight sockets? Pittsburgh. I have them too. They strip very easily.
I almost bought this same car needing a timing belt I’ll look for a new vehicle thank god for this video.
Great video, however I'm sure some Audi fanboys could get through this service nightmare in half the time, we all know everyone in the comments are master techs!
This job is easy. I'm a self employed mechanic and do these on customer driveways. No need for a master tech!!
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast . This guy is probably doing it on the weekend, not on flat rate at a dealership.
@@MagicAyrtonforever true that!!
My goodness... So many steps... Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the video. My two friends bought Audi.I will share it to them.
this video made me realize that I will never buy a audi.
ERICSDIYGARAGE lol same but the 1.8/2.0 is easy
ERICSDIYGARAGE hmm. And i just want to buy a q7. But now? Noooooooooo.
Many older Ford Explorer Engines are German made, even have E-torx fasteners.. They have timing chains in the back(like some Audis) and you have to pull the engine to service the guides. They often fail.
Definitely not a car for someone who either doesn't enjoy/have time to work on cars or the money to pay someone to fix them.
Not the front transverse brake pipe though. You need to remove the engine for that unless you want to break something.
How is this project going?
Got mine all toern down. I won't lie...Im certified but this is a challenging task.
Also bought EGT emulators and manual boost controller, boost gauge and k&n filter.
I thought servicing an E36 thermostat is difficult until i watched this video. gosh! looking forward to your next "going deep pretty fast" video. wonder how much this whole season will cost and will that $500 thingy still sticks? lol
OMG can someone tell me how to relieve the tension. I cant find one vid and cant figure out where to put the wrench. Thank you!
Those 2.7t respond so good to mods.
What hell of a job it is.
at 3:32 you show where the locking pin goes,,,, (I'm doing a 2003 audi a6 quattro 2.7 bi-turbo c5 {exactly like yours}) and it looks like mine has a wire coming out of the top of it, seems weird from what you showed, plus, the 10 mm bolt holding in the cap that I need to remove is in the 4 o'clock position and NOT the 7 o'clock position like I've seen on most vids,,,,, am I missing something here please ???? thank you....
Omg! Done a few timing belts over the years but no way would I keep a car this complicated.
You just wish that manufacturers would make cars that are simple to work on and not over engineered.
Not sure what ya'll are expecting from this model/make/year of car. Not to mention the engine option this one is fitted on. I have a feeling a lot of people just don't wrench on cars or haven't open the hood of their car in the last decade...
Mad Ting but then people would be able to fix their cars by themselves!
Just buy an older model. 80ies Audi five bangers for example. With China being open to the world market you can fit all the gagdets you want to older cars. Gps Double Dinn, electric heated seats etc
Mad Ting Mazda
Reminds me of the time I changed the timing belt on my wife's B7 A4. "put the car in the service position" LOL
DUDE!. that is a big job.
owned 3 audis ,and all them i worked on them my self ,never going back, sometimes i wonder how i managed to work on them ,i had special tools and specific books, feel sorry for you dude, spend all your weekends working on cars.
Nice job. Because of this huge motors I have 1.6tdci with 110hp :-)
Good job ? & How much cost The labor & parts?¿?¿????
what a pain on the butt, keep the videos coming great work
Engineers were laughing when they designed this car. What a joke. I'd trash the car well before needing to do this job. Great job. Good tutorial.
man that is a lot of work i hate these car .well done 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Is this the same procedure for the 4.2?
9:50 Love all that coolant going straight down the dip stick hole and into the oil pan. Probably best to unbolt the water pump before the dip stick tube
Great job totally over my head
dude! how much will you charge on labor for that?!
Good series.
Glad I watched this. Thanks. I will NEVER undertake anything like this.
Damn you'd want to make sure you had the best thermostat in there what a lot of work to replace it lol
Exactly why you would use OE thermostat.
TheRebuilt1 OE?
Great video man.. New sub here just had my morning coffee and watched a euro timing belt swap lol..
These vids are excellent.
Japanese pulleys. :D lol . As far as difficulty of steps, not so much. Just a lot of them. I had to use a snake cam to clean off the gasket material when changing out my volvo 850's timing belt and water pump. That was fun.
Another amazing video. Thanks!
Nice demo master
Great Video, thanks for posting this
