Wow! Just wow! i just suffered a nervous breakdown last week because of the overwhelming feeling of not feeling 'it" anymore after 20 years of dedication. Mainly I hit a personal tragedy losing my parents 5 years ago while releasing our first album. The energy was gone and i have been working a full time job and having two kids and trying to learn how to pivot from a guitar player to trying to learn how to home record and not just get by but do it well just like everyone on this page. I feel very fortunate but also very fatigued because it is endless hours and days now years of dedicating and fine tuning my ears to gaining a better understanding of what we need to do. I fail, and get back up. i fall and get back up. I wonder and sit and watch another tutorial... and i don't know why some days. Our band is light years away from accomplishing anything but my soul burns with each passing hour to get somewhere with it. Another great video Marc and Warren Thanks for these!
This is SUCH an important topic. As someone dealing with depression and anxiety it actually took me a long time to even feel ready to tackle professional projects in this field. Had to learn to handle mental health to not let it impact workflow, results, relationships with clients/co-workers/etc. Thanks for this video.
Absolutely agree. Time is against everyone and we try to manage our lives the best we can. I think the key is to always be honest, truthful and give 100 percent even if you only get 10 percent back. Making music and being creative with people is one of the best things in life.
@@marcdanielnelson317 Fully agree. Honesty is the key and admitting you screwed up can help you improve and is always better than finding scapegoats. And yep, I absolutely love my job. I've always been more creative in making others' creativity stand out and this is perfect for that end.

I completely agree with the learning something different point - that’s one of the main things that has kept me sane over the last year. I decided to learn the piano properly (I had lessons until I was about 11 then stopped. Learning something new (especially if it’s quite difficult) really focus your mind into something and the sense of reward is fantastic.
This has been so incredibly inspiring and I felt every second of it! Music is the biggest passion in my life. I have a hard time getting into anything else for too long because I just need to come back to music. Mixing, performing, writing, recording, every single part is the best feeling and sometimes the worst feeling ever. It’s my favorite rollercoaster.
Such beautiful and meaningful advice. As always it’s the little things that make life easier. We’ve all obsessed over a song and then looked up and it’s 3am night after night... to then have that song just not work out. Taking the space for yourself to take time out and get a different perspective will always be positive. I particularly like the sentiment about life being a journey. It’s a never ending journey but that’s what makes it fun because the journey is what matters! Thank you for your insights. I hope everyone stays healthy and is able to find someone to share their thoughts, fears, loves and passion with! Bring on 2021!
much LOVE and APPRECIATION to you Marc and Warren and to ALL the musical community on planet EARTH!! Cheers for the new year 2021 METAL OX, LET'S GET IT!!
Some great points here. When I graduated in 2000, I'd spent ten years playing in bands, setting up my own studio and doing live sound. That continued for another four years till I was almost bankrupt and had no other focus in my life. I then spent the next six years away from music completely, including guitar playing. However, if music is truly IN you, its not something you can fully switch off. I spent those years building up an amp repair/modification business and put all of my energy into that. That also segued into playing 100-150 gigs a year and 4 hours of sleep most nights, with most of Sunday catching up (if I wasn't gigging then too). It taught me that I have an addictive personality and can't do things by halves. I thought that taking on other interests would be the answer, so I took up brewing/distilling. That took over my entire live and I was completely obsessed - it is now my full-time occupation (ha ha). In the past year I've experienced some pretty significant life-changing events that gave me time to really reflect on things and ask what is really important. I have much better balance between music production, guitar playing and brewing/distilling now. However, I took up fitness and that has been a complete obsession too, but thats not such a bad thing. My only other vice is my unchecked addiction to buying plugins. Great video btw, and some very important points made well.
One Million Likes! Wow! What a great video! I've been thinking about this very topic lately. Health and balance. How can I be a good mixer and achieve good balance in my work, if I'm way out of balance in my life? Balance for me is something that can only be achieved with gentle awareness and adjustments in response to what's is happening within me and around me. So often, my impulse is to do something drastic and over-correct. But that only leaves me just as out of balance, but in a different way than I was before. When I can ask myself "Am I out of balance?" and then use my awareness to gently gravitate towards a more balanced state then that's usually plenty good. Improvements in health take time. Brilliant topic! Thanks so much!
Superb Video , the most common and devastating mistake all my students do, is telling me " Zo i'm 100 % in doing music now" and i literrally have to say "nnnoooooo !!!!" because of what you deescribed , and simply by knowing the Human , Balance IS everything and what you do outside music will WARANTy the quality of Music related Moment , period !! One of the reasons I took last week and this week off from music I needed a reset. I'm having to figure out how to include music (making and starting my business) when I'm not at my 40 hour a week job. It's not been easy 1: finding the time 2: understanding it all. It's taken a lot of time and got a bit overwhelming. My job is stressful enough and music should be my release from that and not add to it. Hopefully when the year ticks over I can find my center again. Thanks Marc much appreciated :)
Hi Anita, I understand, watching you grow has been amazing! I know when we are passionate about what we do and wrapped in it we aren't able to see just how much we have learned! You do wonderful work and inspire so many others! Thanks ever so much
@@Producelikeapro Oh I don't think I inspire anyone at all. I work hard and I listen which is what all of us do. I'm no more special than the next person. That, my friend, is reachable by anyone with a desire to learn :) Thank you and this wonderful community for, well, everything *hugs to you all*
Psh...Anita over here acting like she isn't among the baddest of the bad. What's been the struggle with making/starting your business? I'm the opposite of an expert on the subject, but I have made a lot of mistakes :)
@@matthewjones8510 Heehee nope not one of the baddest of the bad either. Just a gal ;) My main enemy is finding time. Between the job and my kids and then having to deal with the unexpected (which that's always a joy lemme tell ya). Leaves me very little time to make business plans. I do this all on my own...only one of me and I can only do so much in the time I have before and after work.
Great advice Marc, you're such a great communicator, and these feelings need to be addressed frequently, more so in times like these. I find by allowing my subconscious mind time to catch up to my constantly overwhelmed conscious mind that I'm able to cope with the days murkier moments. I use a few techniques to achieve this. The simplest one is to watch a movie or series but only for 15-20 minutes at a time, usually in that time my subconscious spits out the solutions and I get clarity. I also use very simple yoga techniques to stretch out all the muscles and get all blood flowing into the brain. Believe me, I'm no guru but geeeez, it really works and helps calm me down and relaxes the body into meditative state. I tell ya, then the positive solutions really start rolling out...WOW! I do it in the corner of my studio pretty much everyday and it's really helps me focus on the good stuff. Anyway I hope that helps. Thanks again Marc, really enjoying your videos, the mental side of all of this is just so important, well done.
Marc Thanks for taking to time to talk about this. I appreciate your take on things and would add it is important to be kind, to yourself and others. Thank you
Thanks for the video. Like all of us we all have our unique life stories. My biggest challenges in life resulted following the drowning of my best friend and brother when I was 12. He was twenty and two weeks away from quitting his job and pursuing a music career full time. Lots to talk about here. How I deal with stress and my personal resets are daily morning meditation and walks. Thanks to everyone for commenting. May 2021 be a great year for all of you!
Marc Thanks for this video. Your straight to the point and no messing about. Thanks, your an inspiring guy with an open mind and a good heart, just like Warren and Matt. Good on ya and as you say " keep it real "
Thank you for posting this. Its so so so important for musicians and producers NOT to raise their hopes and understand that making music and producing and engineering....is fun and its a journey....but its never ever about the destination.
Excellent instructions. Even when we think everything is under control, it's very important to reinforce good habits. When we feel refreshed, it's easier and delightful to work on our goals. Thanks for reminding us of what matters Cheers!
I started to go professional this year, started working from home and made the same experience as my twin brother, who is a freelance media designer for film, fotography etc. we both started to get obsessed about cooking next to our things we're doing. When you have to be at home (and maybe are not financially free enough to go out every day to do so), it's really nice to spend some time in another room, something that you can also enjoy or treat yourself in a nice way (i mean, it's food), just doing something else. Also I'm a musician, so twice a week i'd go to the rehearsal room in the morning to practice drums (with ear protection of course haha) and it's kind of a long way to go, like 30 to 45 minutes. I'm always motivated and have a fresh mind from the feeling of going somewhere else. Buying groceries, going for a walk, cleaning. Actually there are some nice and productive things you can combine. BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE A PLAN.
As an ADHD musician and producer/engineer, this has been the definitive push I needed to complete the life changing process that I started last year. Thank you so much.
By that you mean you are just relatively more worried about details or are you actually having a diagnose of ADHD (A chronic condition including attention difficulty, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness.) Asking because t would be pretty difficult to mix or make music with that. Just curious.
@@massivebeatzz it’s not difficult...Actually. I have sever ADHD and was dognoised when I was 9. Making music and mixing, producing is one of the few things that I excel big time in compared to most. Like it works in reverse for the things you are most passionate about. In fact, I’ve spoken to a lot of people about this and they too connect and agree.
@@marcdanielnelson317 thanks for sharing / expanding on that. One of the many healing factors of music. Among anti-aging, happiness, and great hair (the latter proven in your case). Greets from LA - to a great 2021.
@@massivebeatzz Well, I was diagnosed a couple years ago with severe ADHD. Started with therapy and medication, and it changed my life. People with ADHD are not exactly careless or easily distracted, its much more complex than that. When interested in something, it can be the total opposite: HYPERFOCUS. The ability to concentrate on some task way above average, to an extreme that the rest of the world disappears. Before therapy (coaching, training) and meds, I was good at producing and mixing, but chaotic and inconsistent. It took me a loooong time to finish stuff, cause I was obsessed with details and the crystal clear goal I had in my head (borderline TOC). But I always managed to get unique and great results and my work was praised by clients and colleagues. Now it takes me 1/4 of that time to do the same things. I notice I wander less, and stay in every little task till its good to go. BUT (a funny bit now) I keep putting the kettle on to make tea, again and again because as soon as I live the kitchen it ceases to exist. The only way to succeed on that task is to keep staring at it till is ready. And then, when finally stops I realise I could have used that time to prepare the cup with a spoon, tea, and some honey. So while I do that, the water cools down (too much for my taste) so I press the kettle switch again and then do everything properly the next time it stops. That's if I'm lucky not to get a notification, a message, or someone talks to me (while I'm having constant random thoughts or ideas asking for my attention in my head). That's my head since I wake up to my last conscious thought before falling asleep. The conclusion: Making tea is hard, and a complex mix is easy. Not really, but you get the point ;-) Any AD(H)D fellas around here can relate? Thanks for your comments! (I've probably used some weird sentences or syntax. Sorry about that, I'm not that fluent in english!) Cheers!

Great video. Sometimes we fail, but is failure even failure? We take what we learn and build on it. That's how I've always tried to look at it, at least. Whether it's a record or a relationship or some financial thing, you take that pain or the lesson learned or the part that didn't quite fit, and you use it later. Maybe years later, but it wasn't for nothing.
Thank you very much Mark, listening to this has helped me a lot. I see that I am not the only person who has gone through this frustration and this helps me. Thank you

Marc
Thanks for taking to time to talk about this.
I appreciate your take on things and would add it is important to be kind, to yourself and others.
Thank you
Thank you Lynn.. Be well and safe!
Loud & Clear, every words from Marc. Thanks.

@@Producelikeapro I'm really looking forward to seeing Marc in the Pro Mix Academy.
Yes! Coming soon!!
@@Producelikeapro Marc and you have very similar coaching style and generosity of sharing. I'm glad that I'm one of the PLAPers. :D
Thanks! Yes, fits in with us perfectly doesn’t he? Truly amazing
Your kindness is being appreciated . A big thank you .
Thank you for sharing your journey Marc! Cheers!!
Thanks Marc for being so real and honest! Genuine words!
You know, it's good that y'all touch on this, Thank you.

Marc Thanks for this video. Your straight to the point and no messing about. Thanks, your an inspiring guy with an open mind and a good heart, just like Warren and Matt. Good on ya and as you say " keep it real "
more of this, on allll youtube
Thank you for posting this. Its so so so important for musicians and producers NOT to raise their hopes and understand that making music and producing and engineering....is fun and its a journey....but its never ever about the destination.
Excellent instructions. Even when we think everything is under control, it's very important to reinforce good habits. When we feel refreshed, it's easier and delightful to work on our goals.
Thanks for reminding us of what matters
Cheers!
Really Helpful 🙌🙌
Keep on being positive with making music. 2021 should be a breathe of fresh air for us making music and shoeing it off to the world.
Good luck all
I started to go professional this year, started working from home and made the same experience as my twin brother, who is a freelance media designer for film, fotography etc.
we both started to get obsessed about cooking next to our things we're doing.
BUT (a funny bit now)
I keep putting the kettle on to make tea, again and again because as soon as I live the kitchen it ceases to exist.
Not really, but you get the point ;-)
Any AD(H)D fellas around here can relate? Thanks for your comments!
(I've probably used some weird sentences or syntax. Sorry about that, I'm not that fluent in english!) Cheers!
Thank you so much for sharing this ✋🤚 You guys rock & so does Marc Daniel Nelson ❤️
Wonderful episode. I like the idea of the 2nd passion. Marc is a very thoughtful individual ... For me, I love the electronic aspect of recordings ... which, yes, is still related to tracking and the production process, but still has provided space for me to refocus my mind. Thanks for making this happen Warren. Great stuff.
Wow! Very inspirational. Doing what you want to be really needs passion.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience - nicely done Sir ...

Wow! Marc Daniel Nelson is one special individual. He feel things very deeply, and truly cares about other people's lot in life. So talented. So impressive. Thank you PLAP and Marc for this very special video :)
Great speech
Thanks
Great video. Sometimes we fail, but is failure even failure? We take what we learn and build on it. That's how I've always tried to look at it, at least. Whether it's a record or a relationship or some financial thing, you take that pain or the lesson learned or the part that didn't quite fit, and you use it later. Maybe years later, but it wasn't for nothing.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings. This clearly runs deep!
Very very very well said. Respect!
Thank you Marc. This is a great topic!
Thank you, man. This is great.
