Although much later Eastwood would go onto direct and make serious stuff, his early films like this were so enjoyable. As for Richard Burton with his wonderful voice - he was lost far too young .
Did you see him in the Wild Geese with Richard Harris, Roger Moore and Hardy Kruger?. He was excellent as the leader of the mercenaries - a very good yarn.
I remember watching this with my Dad's friend back in the late 80s and that was a phrase for me and him from then on, I was around 10 years old.. My Dad passed away Oct 2022 and at his service I hear his friend say Broadsword calling Danny Boy,from a distance and it took me back to my childhood💪🏿 RUclips is amazing for this
Hi, yes, totally understandable, a bit of an upgrade from his usual six-shooter (Revolver), and possibly the first time on film that we see a "dual-wield"; kind regards.
Yes the dual wield is great action stuff.....but it's actually virtually impossible to do irl. Those MP 40s gad a fore grip mag housing for the express purpose of keeping the thing down and on target
When I call home to Dad in UK when I've just achieved something special - it's always Broadsword calling Danny Boy (bit of a family tradition - and Dad and I are both ex Royal Navy - so there you go !)
And while we're at it - First, you've got that bloody old fortress on top of that bloody cliff. Then you've got the bloody cliff overhang. You can't even see the bloody cave, let alone the bloody guns. And anyway, we haven't got a bloody bomb big enough to smash that bloody rock. And that's the bloody truth, sir. (equally great Movie - Guns of Navarone !)
Joy. This film has every thing a young boy needs in a film. The voice over guy from War of The Worlds, Clint Eastwood, and the narrator from the original Paddington Bear TV series. AND THIS SHOOT OUT..... How long is that corridor? MAN ALIVE the folk back in Britain would have hearing damage.
"Broadsword calling Danny boy" - probably the coolest movie quote ever. It encapsulates the triumph of the righteous hero, who resists everything evil puts his way. The idea of using the main enemy transmitter to contact your operation boss, is in part hilarious and part brings a tear to your face. I assume that everyone here know you can't shoot two machine guns at the same time :)
I have got this movie DVD of Richard Burton Clint Eastwood Mary Ure Ingrid Pitt Michael Hornden and Derren Nesbitt in Where Eagles Dare I am dedicating this movie DVD to my old school friends who are both sisters as I hope to see them both again very soon to Chris and Hester from Billyxxx
I have seen this movie at least a dozen times, it is one of my favorites. I just realized that they are calling to home base back in England for the plane to come pick them up. I don't know how long it takes a plane to fly from England to the Austrian Alps, but seems like it would have taken longer than the amount of time it takes here in the movie. From this point the action is fairly non stop: escaping from the castle, getting to the bus, driving to the airfield, only to get there just as the plane arrives. Was a plane of this type capable of flying from England to Austria and back without refueling? Who cares! It is a great movie. I especially like the double and triple cross in the story. It is interesting right through to the end.
Does it specifically fly from England? I agree with your point that there were few - Hell, any aircraft capable of making the journey you specified... Don't think it matters in the grand scheme; if we were the characters in the movie we wouldn't care if it came from England, Scotland, or Timbuktu!
Off the top of my head it was, oddly, a Mosquito in the novel. Their traitorous commanding officer is on the plane so, yes, I think it is supposed to have flown in from England.
Hi yes, but like just the weapons in film have a never ending supply of ammunition (no Magazine changes/reloads needed, especially for Clint), perhaps their captured Junkers JU52 Transport had a full-tank that never runs out, and time frame wise for the flight; in film they can use time compression...
Where Eagles Dare will forever be a classic. I always loved how nonchalantly and cheerfully Clint is hosing Germans with that MP40 like a 1940'S Harry Callahan offset by the urgent impatience of the broody and more serious Richard Burton. This film was one of the first films I remember for not portraying the German army as thick, bungling cannon-fodder but actually showing the flanking, suppression and hand-grenade stormtrooper tactics they pioneered from WW1 onwards.
One of my favorite adventure films Although a bit of artistic licence when there at the cabin INSIDE with an 12 inch antenna . Communication huge distances. Anyway I always figured on the plane home that Clint Eastwood made it with the other female spy played by Ingrid Pitt. Great escapism .
Where Eagles Dare is probably my favorite movie of all time. I have thought long of who could play in a remake; So; Major Smith- Either Christian Bale, Timothy Dalton, Ian Graffaud from Fantastic Four movies. The one that can stretch. Hugo Weaving- Lieutenant Schaefer. Ray Winstone- Colonel Turner. Heidi- Erika Christensen! OMG HOT! Mary- if we dye her hair blonde Rachel Weisz.I have the movie on DVD, VHS and am about to get the actual movie poster. I think I qualify as a fan.
C3PO! Come in! Is there any other way out of the cell bay? We’ve been cut off! So this is where Lucas got his inspiration from the original Stormtroopers that spray weapons and miss.
When infiltrating a castle in Bavaria (which was actually filmed south of Salzburg, lol !) - or even a pub in Bavaria - always be sure to get a girl in there first..
It's such a good film as it has a twist at the end as the colonel they liberate from the Nazis turns out to be a traitor and the operation seems to have been in vain. Yet the Nazis were probably spooked when three commandos caused so much mayhem and they lost a double agent.
"I have it all". Code for all those we suspected of being traitors are traitors including the colonel behind Admiral Rollins. This movie is full of nuance.
Also Alistair Maclean was a dab hand at writing excellent narratives . I bought this on blu ray for my own collection as I love it so much. Poor Mary Ure died in strange circumstances when on stage - very pretty girl.
Hi, yes, you'd think it would just be in it's standard configuration, i.e. just the Bipod, or even from the hip, but no, it's a full Tripod. I guess it looked better on camera being higher up.
lol, the SS with all their crackpot tactics, just come off as complete canon fodder in this film. They're also like asleep in the castle, despite the good guys laying explosives, disguised as a heavy bombing raid.

Hi, yes, but in "Star Wars"/"A New Hope" they forgot to have "Han" dual wielding...and just imagine if the Imperial Stormtroopers or the special Black Uniformed Guards had placed some sort of "heavy blaster" on a tripod in lieu of a MG42 in the center of the room...
Funny you should say that, since I made a Star Wars variation of this movie: www.fanpop.com/clubs/thelefteris24/articles/269907/title/where-eagles-dare-part-2-3
In the book, almost nobody gets killed. and the American character, Lieutenant Schaeffer...let's just say that writing American dialogue was NOT one of Alistair McLean's strong points. Casting Eastwood was brilliant- he has about ten lines. ("We got company")
@bodieofci5 he didnt get his .44 Magnum until 4 years later. By then, the war was over for 30 years and he recieved a name change to Harry Callahan and had a civilan job--Homicide Inspector for SFPD
I first saw this movie in my small town theater, as a 10 year old in 1969. I never tire of watching it!
Is it that old ? Still stacks up today if I’m honest .
I think even James Bond would have struggled to survive this mission.

Yep… Clint Eastwood racked up his highest career kill count in this film (facts)
Not when the wears so thick a plot armor:)

My favorite movie. I still need to count how many times Clint says "We've got company".
Now THIS is a how you make an action film.
Hollywood pay attention.
I saw this in the theater and when Clint turns around the corner firing two sub machines guns the crowd in the theater went crazy and cheered .

i live in California. When it gets to be 105 degrees in the summer, I watch this movie because of all the cold, icy scenes.
I love that idea 😀
I'm not sure why, but this never seems to be on German TV on Christmas Day.

It would clash with dinner for one.
Oddly enough ive seen Hogans Heros on german tv in germany tons of times in the 90s.... go figure :)
