Why do my dragon fruit flowers turn yellow and fall off and what to do about it

  • Since I started getting flower buds from my dragon fruit I decided to do my research on how to increase the chances of the flower buds to develop into fruits. I found out that there are two main types of dragon fruit when it comes to development of fruits from flowers. The first one is the fertile type which means it doesn't need hand pollination or cross pollination to set fruit. Some growers also call this the "self pollinating" type. The other type is the sterile or non-self pollinating. This type needs cross pollination from a fertile type in order to set fruit. If you only have this sterile type of dragon fruit in your garden, there is no amount of hand pollination that you can do to have your flowers developing into fruits. So if you have a plant that is 2 to 3 years old producing flowers but the flowers after blooming just fall off and never end up developing into fruits, then chances are you have the sterile type. Now what you can do in this situation is to plant a known fertile type so you can do cross pollination. To ensure that you get fruits from your plants, only plant known fertile type dragon fruits in your garden. You can also increase the size/yield of the fruits by planting two known fertile types together in one post/trellis side by side (increase chances of cross pollination by doing this). Dragon fruits growers do this in their farms to get better fruit yield. Cheers.

    Good points. I'm having about 95% chance on hand pollination and about 70% chance pollination with natural pollination in South Florida. I always use pollen from another variety, thank you for the confirmation!!! Happy growing

    It's always nice to identify the variety you have to know if it's self pollinating or not. Collecting 3-5 different varieties is fun specially when you do cross hand pollination.

    I recently had 7 blossoms on two plants. I hand pollinated all not once but two times during the night. I cut off the pistols from a few and shook them on the stamen. I then collected all remaining pollen and sprinkled it on the stamen. I left the pistols on the stamen all night. These were self pollinating varieties. the plants are 1-1/2 years old and quite large and healthy. None of them set. Does anyone have possible reasons why dragon fruit will not set when pollinated correctly?

      I would suggest 2 cuttings but you can go with just one. The dragon fruit is easy to propagate anyway. I suggest trimming out the side branches and just leaving one main while you are growing it. You can let the new branch to mature/grow a little bit before you trim it off so you can use it as a new cutting/planting material. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. Cheers.

      Hello. 👍😄👍 I recommend adding chicken or steer manure compost to your plants. I add 2 scoops per plant of chicken manure compost or steer manure compost every month. I alternate between the two so if I use chicken manure compost this month then I will add steer manure compost next month. I currently also add about 2 tablespoons of osmocote 14-14-14 to each plant every month. The frequency of application will taper off as it approaches winter time (less daylight). When I add 14-14-14 I also add about 2 to 4 tablespoons of vermicast to each plant. I also do hand pollination which increases the chances of pollination occurring which will eventually increase the chances of the flowers developing into fruits. I hope this will help. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. Cheers.

    Can you please assist me? I don't know what I could be doing wrong, but I have many dragon fruit trees, and they all give me so many flowers during the summer, however after they all bloom they just wither away and die rather than turn into fruit. Not sure what I could be doing wrong to cause this. My trees are about 4 years old, and have given me flowers for about 3 years, however they all die for the last 3 years. I use chicken manure compost a few times throughout the year, as well as using miracle grow on the trees right as I start to see buds forming. I have about 50 flowers between 3-4 trees and all have bloomed beautiful flowers which are all turning yellow and likely going to die again.

    i am facing this problem for a long time , i cross pollinated and i got one fruit . but now i don't have many trees .how do i do cross pollinate ? same tree pollinaion is not working :(

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  6 лет назад +3

      Suspended if you got one fruit from your hand pollination then that means your plant is not sterile. I had a couple of plants that I tried to hand pollinate and cross pollinate last year that were not fruitful so I said to myself that these plants are not going to fruit no matter what I do. But this year both have a bunch of fruits developing after doing hand/cross pollination. If this is the first year your dragon fruit plant is fruiting then maybe your plant has not reached its full maturity (potential). If it is on its second year of fruiting then I suggest to plant other varieties for cross pollination. I also collect pollens in one container whenever I can and I store it in the freezer so I always have pollens whenever it's needed. I don't know how long the pollens last if they are stored in the freezer but somehow it seems to work for me. I hope this somehow helps you. Thank you for watching. Cheers.

      Thank you so much for your reply. You are doing Great work. Its second year and I got one fruit after cross-pollination.Can you tell me how you store the pollens.My tree gives so much flowers.In heat some flowers burned also.I think i did not give sufficient water. One tip for you,In your videos you are not using tags.If you use tags then your video can be come up in first page of youtube search and you can a get a lot of views from there.Thanks again

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  6 лет назад

      Suspended with a soft bristle brush I run it across the anthers (where the pollens are located) several times of the different flowers with a shallow plastic container (I used the plastic container that you get from Kentucky fried chicken side dishes-red cap) positioned underneath to catch the pollens. I mix all the pollens (old previously frozen and newly collected pollens from all different varieties of dragon fruit) in the container with the brush. I then hand pollinate each stigma with the mixture of pollens. After I hand pollinate all of the flowers that bloom I cover the container with the cap that came with it and put it in the freezer. The plastic container from Kentucky fried chicken seems to work well because it is shallow and it easily thaws after taking it out of the freezer. I usually start pollinating after (a minute or two) taking it out of the freezer. Using a glass container might take longer time to thaw so I don't recommend it. I hope this will help you. Thank you for your tip and thank you for watching. Cheers.

    Ok, so what kind of pollination are we talking about, #1 I don't know what kind of plant I have, I do know I don't have any fruits, just flowers, and I wasn't aware about the two different types...so my question? #2 Can I use pollen from my hibiscus flower? It has pollen, someone tell me please. Last month I had 2 flowers, this month I have like 6 flowers, but don't see fruit yet..I was out of town when the first two flowers opened, last night two opened and I saw them this morning...will pollinate with my hibiscus pollen tonight when I think they will open. I kind of pollinated the two that opened last night...we'll see...yes my first two flowers last month fell off by themselves...and to tell you the truth I haven't done too much to this plant..I've had her several years, but I have more all around.. I believe I have to go in and start growing what I have...HELP ANYONE

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  5 лет назад

      Hello. If you have a variety of a dragon fruit plant you can use the pollens from the flower that bloomed on that same flower or you can use a mixture of pollens from other dragon fruit flowers that bloomed as well.
      Here is a video on how to pollinate: ruclips.net/video/95136hqMtaQ/видео.html
      Here is another video on cross pollination of dragon fruit: ruclips.net/video/29f3m_tUo-k/видео.html
      I usually pollinate about 9 p.m. on the day the flowers bloom if I have the time or early in the morning the next day. The dragon fruit flower will usually bloom at night and will start to wither and die the day after so you have to pollinate the flower once it is fully open/bloom.
      I hope this answers your question. Thank you for watching. Cheers.

      From cutting plant after how many years we can consider as the matured plant? What kind of fertilizer do you use and how often you fertilizer them and how much? Thanks for your replied.

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  5 лет назад +1

      @@elainluong76 I consider a cutting as a matured plant after about 2 1/2 months of growing after planting it. I usually recommend watering cuttings every third day for about 2 1/2 months and by that time the plant has established it roots and should be able to grow new branches.
      I add 2 scoops of chicken or steer manure compost every month as a source of organic material for the plant. I alternate between the two every month so it will be chicken manure compost this month and then steer manure compost next month. I do this the whole year.
      I currently also add Osmocote 14-14-14 (2 tablespoon) and (vermicast 4 tablespoon) for each plant and will eventually do it every month because of the plants nutrient requirements for growing fruits during summer. I will taper the frequency of adding these two (osmocote and vermicast) by fall. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for watching. Cheers.

      Do you use fertilizers? I recommend the following: The first fertilizer is the Miracle Gro general purpose plant food which I use once in early spring and once after flowering/fruiting cycle (1 tablespoon per plant). The next two fertilizers that I use are both organic namely steer manure compost and chicken manure compost. I use them interchangeably once every month (1 to 2 scoops per plant). I also use slow release Osmocote 14-14-14 when I see flower buds starting to develope (this year was April, 1-2 table spoons per plant) and this year I also added earthworm castings (same time, 1-2 tablespoons per plant). I also add Epson salt two weeks before summer starts (1 tablespoon per plant). Hopefully this will help your plants/flowers. By the way I added tags in the viedos. Thank you for suggesting it. The link will give you information about Osmocote 14-14-14:
      www.plantersplace.com/osmocote-plant-food/the-osmocote-advantage/
      The link will give you information about the use of Epson salt in gardening:
      www.epsomsaltcouncil.org/uses-benefits/gardening/
      This will give you information regarding the first fertilizer:
      www.miraclegro.com/en-us/products/plant-food-care/miracle-gro-water-soluble-all-purpose-plant-food
      There are fertilizers that are slowly released to the plant like Osmocote 14-14-14 and organic fertilizers. Organic fertilizers needs to "break down" first before the plants can benefit from them. This means when you apply the organic fertilizer today there is no effect/benefit to the plants instantaneously, it will take time for it to break down so the benefits will take effect weeks or even months after. This is the reason why I apply steer manure compost or chicken manure compost every single month. I do tend to use more organic fertilizers than chemical fertilizers.
      There are fertilizers that the effects/benefits are instant. Chemical fertilizers are these type but there is a chance that you will 'burn" the plant. It is like the effect of drug overdose on people..... there is a chance of killing your plant. This is why I only apply the recommend amount or even less than the recommended amount. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for watching. Cheers.

This is what I use which appears to work: The first two fertilizers that I use are both organic namely steer manure compost and chicken manure compost. I usually increase the frequency of the application of the 14-14-14 during the fruiting time then decrease it back down come winter. This year I also added earthworm castings (same time, 1-2 tablespoons per plant). I also add Epson salt two weeks before summer starts (1 tablespoon per plant).
      I also suggest doing hand pollination which will help increase the chances of flowers developing into fruits.
