- Time for a thought experiment: Imagine for a moment that global catastrophe struck and you needed to rebuild everything. How would you do it? It’s a topic astrobiologist Lewis Dartnell has been pondering for some time, and in this talk he shares some findings related to three key areas that foster the development of civilization: food, fire and science.

"We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology."

This guy watched the first season Dr. stone and said: "Man!, I gotta make a TED talk out of this!."
😂 Funny reference thanks for that
Cool, bought his book, amazing read and information! =)
This guy did his research.

One of the things Lewis does not mention as essential for the rebooting of civilization are teachers. I am a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, I find it difficult to give my knowlege to others, even when it is desperately needed. Teachers can take the "black boxes" of things like medicine, electronics, mathmatics, authority, ecconomics, libraries and agriculture, and make them accessible, understandable and indeed desirable and necessary. Being able to read, and wanting to read is essential.
I believe it fits within "knowledge" :)

One way to help rebuild civilization is construct a Knowledge Ark. Stock it with not just how-to books, but also great literature, drama and poetry. Gather great music in various genres, and DVDs of classic movies and TV shows.
here after watching the anime "Dr. Stone"
We’re so safe in our modern society, that we want the hard dangerous kind
thank you for your insight, pink guy
I had this exact conversation with someone and they asked after an apocalypse they would be thousands of cars but no gasoline I said lucky for you I can distill gasoline from crude oil with just a 55-gallon drum and a copper coil
That's cool! Can u please elaborate for humanity's sake?
@@parthsalat agreed!
Consumption, Energy, and Knowledge.
Priority #1. Raid the libraries for usefull books.
Priority #2. Fuel. Get the generators back on line, get the vehicles moving again.
and you can use the useless books for fuel and use the fuel to make useful books

We may need the useless books to keep the useless people entertained.
@@DaveWard-xc7vd use them for fuel too

So, COVID-19, hu? How are we preparing for 2022?
Dr stone
I just ordered the book. This has been quite interesting, esp. the part on how to make glass & grind lenses to improve vision. It would devastate me to be unable to read.
So how was the book?
oh my god it was my dream to do this I'm so glad I found you before I did this is so cool
Same here
😂 Dr.stone
I got you
Kinda same
😂😂😂😂
ohayou sekai good morning world!
I’ve always wanted to know how to make the materials like plastic, rubber, etc. we use to craft our modern day devices. It’s sad that not enough engineering jobs really teach them HOW to make the materials they use when building but instead how to put them together
Dr. Stone
If you want to know how look at material engineers as they are the engineers that create/research the material that engineers use
You can learn this on RUclips , that's where I learned to distill gasoline from crude oil with just a 55-gallon drum very dangerous but doable

The iPencil video is amazing! Great lecture!

Well, first you have to make a town center

One of the few good things that came from globalism, is the standardization of technology across the world. So even if the planet is plunged into global anarchy and strife, there is very likely will be a few peaceful beacons where our modern knowledge will remain and develop, awaiting its moment to lit up the darkened planet

Great content, boring presentation style. The way he talks is just so repetitive.
How To Make a Pencil: Take wood, pyrolyze into charcoal. Take charcoal, fire it in kiln at above 900'C to carburize into crude graphite. Take crude graphite, crush and mix with wetted clay. Form graphite/clay into pencil lead. Allow to dry, and then fire it in kiln again to harden the lead. Take a straight branch, split along grain. Cut recess sized for lead. Put lead into recess, and glue the two halves of the branch together again. Carve or turn the branch body into final dimensions. You now have a pencil (without the eraser).
You can also just use a burnt stick. That was a really stupid point. His point, not yours.
Awesome, now I can save humanity
where do you get the glue from?
@@MarkFilipAnthony Resin glue from the sap of conifer trees. Hide glue from boiling animal hide in water. Fish glue from fish bladders.
