I admit that I do not understand why another incursion into Kursk was preferred to difficult locations in Donbass.

The Russians aren’t going to take Donbas any time soon. When it comes time to negotiate it won’t matter much that they’ve taken another village. Kursk though is an embarrassment to the Russian regime and Ukrainians on the offensive again exacerbates the Russian public’s sense of gloom about how the SMO is going. This is also the message to negotiators. 5 months and Russia has still not regained its territory. They are losing this war. That perception will be major.
