Figured I'd come back to this video 3 years later and say something about this lens. I had this lens and my camera in my backpack and was involved in a motorcycle accident. The lens took most of the damage and still rocks on with only a slight slow down to the auto focus. Amazing lens!!
My nifty fifty got in an accident too. It didnt survive as well as yours but i found an amazing video tutorial and was able to fix it and it has worked like a glove since!
I’m testing myself and it’s the only lens I took with me to Canada this week. Niagara Falls today, Toronto tomorrow! Btw, Canadiens are officially the nicest people I’ve ever met Yes, it’s true 💪🏼
I'd say the biggest differentiator is that the 50 can get down to f/1.8 for excellent depth shots. I think the Canon 15-85 can only go to f/3.5 which is limiting when it comes to creating depth or getting great bokeh. I don't normally use a 15-85 for my videos, but with some zoom lenses, you may get some cropping on occasion depending on the sensor. Also, primes traditionally have slightly better quality, though zooms have gotten much better lately.
DadVerb oh sweet. im thinking of getting one. do you think i should just buy a 14mm since i already have 18 - 85? saves money dont you think? or i should buy 50mm nevertheless
Great question. Hard to say since I'm not too sure what kind of stuff you enjoy shooting. Personally, I'd get a 50 just to have on hand but a 14 is great for wider shots. Maybe landscapes or vlogging.
Some small correction: The focal length that you actually gonna get is always 50 mm, no matter what camera you use. But on APS-C sensor the frame size is gonna look like 80mm lens on full frame, and you are not gonna get the same results with APS-C + 50mm and full frame + 80mm (same aperture) in terms of depth of field. Because you still have the 50mm focal length, but the image is cropped... ;) However, nice video for beginners like me :D
I would not call the 50mm 1.8 underrated in any way. Look at ANY article or video on budget Canon lenses and you will see this lens. It's recommended everywhere and hailed as the holy grail of cheap lenses. I don't disagree that it should be in most people's camera kits, but I can't say I agree with it being underrated.
underrated means it doesn't get the credit it deserves, which is what you're describing. Think you might be misunderstanding what that term means. It's a good thing!
Mikey Cook Hey I need help !!! I am little bit tight in budget.😅 So I am planning to buy only body and this lens. That's means i am not going to buy 18-55. And yes I am a beginner.
Hardik Vansia you should get the kit lens. This lens is way too restrictive for a lot of situations. It's very zoomed in so situations like taking photos of family at home are completely out of the question. The kit lens is much more versatile
I’ve always had one of these. I remember, pre digital, when every camera came with the manufacturers version of the lens for their camera. Now it’s either body only, or a kit lens of some description. If anyone hasn’t got one, get one now. 😀
I can’t wait for Canon to start releasing smaller, lighter lenses with (slightly) slower apertures (like a 50 1.8) for the R. I love the RF 35 1.8, it’s a sweet little lens that makes walking around with the camera just fantastic. It’ll be really interesting to see where the RF line goes over the next 5 years now that the Hebrew Trinity is complete.
I am very lucky, my husband bought me this lens and I loooooove it!!!! I film with it my close ups for the eye makeup tutorials and I see a huge difference!
Something I learned a VERY long time ago is that "Inexpensive" no longer means "Cheap". The production costs for just about everything you can think of have gotten so ridiculously low, while technology just keeps marching forward, that even something like a decent-to-high quality camera lens can be manufactured and sold for a fraction of the cost/price ratio that would have been required even a decade ago. As a semi-pro-hope-to-be-fulltime-photographer-someday, I'm getting shots today with a $600 digital + $300 - $500 lens that far surpass the best shots I ever got with my first "real" film camera back in the late 80s that cost over $2000 for camera + lens. Could I do even better if I were to drop four or five grand more on gear? Sure. But do I have to right now? Not at all.
Except it's not exactly true! 50mm on APS-C is still 50mm. You just get the EQUIVALENT crop to an 80mm on full frame. Everything else remains the same.
the aptuere also changes when using it on a crop camera you are not getting a f1.8 amount of light.. crop sensors effect both focal length and the f stop
LOL, I can see your point there. I actually stopped recommending the 1.4 since the 1.8 is cheaper and does so well. Both are better off stopping down to avoid soft focus and aberrations anyway, so you end up shooting with about the same settings. For that, might as well get the cheaper one.
Keep in mind that this Version is a STM (a must for a 6d Mark II) that allow you to shot video with the AF method: Live 1-point AF and then choose "Movie Servo AF speed." "AF speed" from 0 to -4. In this way you can focus a video like a cinematic pro camera!!! S l o w l y. (other compatiblle Lenses are the EF 24-105mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM) Good video :-)
I had this lens back when I was a Canon man and I was out in a overgrown field one day, I stopped to switch lenses and it rolled out of my camera bag, I was new to photography and I loved this lens looked for like an hour and I couldn’t find it. Six months past through winter and I see a post on a local facebook page saying I’ve found a lens almost the exact spot I lost it. Went and picked it up and banged it on my camera and it was in perfect working order and other than some mud on the outside it was perfectly clean inside! Still blows my mind lol
Nifty 50 is HANDS DOWN my fave lens and without a doubt the one I use the most. So much so that I now am the proud owner of 2 of them. They're amazing!
I bought my first prime as 35mm f1.8 dx version. It is on the camera 24/7 since I got it. Loving it every moment. Also like AM/M mode where autofocus is set you can still manually focus it if needed.
Buying this lens next week friday. Can't wait. I have a T5i so I know it's going to be 80mm. But I'll manage. Watched a TON of photo and video examples and I'm sold. And you can't beat the price. It's $125 on Amazon.
I’m shooting on an 80D. I’ve always struggled to find a use for my 50mm for photography - often I’d find the 80mm equivalent FOV too tight. But now that I’m starting to shoot video a bit, I’m finding that same 80mm FOV so yummy. Built-in IS would be awesome but of course that would increase the price. So I’ll just try to lay off the coffee a bit
Granted this video is older, but it is still relevant. This was the first lens I purchased for my camera (it came with the 18-55 kit lens) and I still use it even today. This is a great little lens.
i got this Lense too and use it everyday! I dont have a lot of money and this little boy still gives me the opportunity to take awesome pictures :) Great Video Peter :) Really love your work and you are inspiring me :) thank you
@rickydegove i'm covered on the 24 already with my zoom lens. but that's all I have. I was thinking of going for the 50mm on my crop sensor for portraits and stuff, the nice bokeh blur looks very nice. I know I'll have to stand a good distance away for the photo, but still thinking I'll go for it. Worst case scenario, I'll use my zoom lens if there isn't space for me to back away from the subject
Hey guys! If you're REEEALLLY on a budget, there's also the Yongnuo 50 mm lens. Same F 1.8 capability, same focal length, it's basically meant to be a dupe of the canon lens. And this baby is only $50. I got mine on amazon. So if you reeeally are on a tight budget, this lens works amazing. I've been using it for years and I love it. I do think it is made out of plastic though, which can be a downside if you really do tend to throw your lenses around. But other than that, it is supposed to perform identically. Not trying to knock the canon lens, just thought I'd share! 😊
Another amazing, exciting video, Peter! I learn so much from you and your level of enthusiasm is contagious. Also thanks for all the work you put into your links to help viewers. Subscriber from Florida.
I used to work at a photo gear shop while in college. We tested a all of our 50 1.8 against a all of our 50 1.4 and each time 50 1.8 was sharper at any aperture size. Best canon lens considering price.
As a newbie to this game and being on a budget, after seeing multiple views I decided to purchase one. It arrived yesterday and I am quite impressed with the build and the results. A little noisy when focusing but for this price lens noise is my least worry. Now I have change to spend on other funky stuff.
Pete, can you do a 2min Tuesday vid or a full blown tutorial on shooting action sports ( camera settings help etc )? Your videos are the best on the net man!🇿🇦
It's popular among youtubers, because there are good chances for a large audience to purchase it via the affiliate link, that you'll most likely find at the top of the video description ;-)
I got this for my first fixed-focal length lens, and I've never taken better portraits with any other lens. The nifty-fifty is awesome and not expensive!
I considered that and still may, but looking at 24 or 40 for a street lens. With the Canon 1.6 crop factor the 35 comes closer to a true 50 but the areas cropped. So it’s a hard choice :)
This lens is awesome. I've been using it for three years. But using it on a crop sensor indoors is sometimes just difficult. Definitely not good for shooting in tight spaces. I think this is really important to know that on crop sensor it's actually like 80mm. After all, people who are looking for a cheap lens normally own a crop-sensor camera, because let's be honest here. Full-frame is expensive as hell. Now I'm planning to buy Yongnuo 35mm f 2.0 which is actually more like 50mm on full frame. I still recommend buying the 50mm canon though! I love it and I won't stop using it.
Totally agree. my 50/1.8 is a go-to workhorse. Put your camera on a tripod (the sharpest lens you will ever have is called a tripod) and wow. I use it mostly at F4. But is is quite versatile. Most of my portraits come off this lens.
@@tomdonaghy8757 Yeah, don't get me wrong - the 50mm f1.8 is an amazing lens. It's just the video title that annoyed me a little, expected something different than a fifty like every other photographer in this universe already recommends. It is most definitely not "underrated". Perhaps 35mm is underrated? 85mm?
Peter! Thanks for all the incredible content, nice to see this type of stuff being made in the True North! Can you do a video comparing the different camera systems? i.e. micro 4 3rds, full frame and APS-C? Like if you agree!
Thank you for explaining the crop sensor like that! That made complete sense, I borrowed a buddies 50mm for my cannon 800D and was wondering why everything seemed so zoomed in. Now I know I need to get something more like a 35!
I see a lot of photographers have one of this lens either the 1.4 or the 1.2 and the 1.8 I use to have the 1.2 dam that lense would give me killer shots I trade it in for 24 to 70 2.8 now i would say i do miss it.
I used it on a crop sensor for a long time. It becomes an 80mm +/- on a crop. Still very usable but also limiting at the same time. 35ish mm will bring you to about 50mm on a full.
i got mine with my camera as a kit with 18-55mm lens , but i tend to use the 18-55mm lens alot more , as it's the only lens i take out when i'm going out for the day sometimes .
@@Aerylithe I have one as well, and here is a short review. TL;DR at the bottom. It's certainly worth it. $125 is very cheap for a lens and certainly for an F/1.8 lens. Bokeh is pretty soft which I like. There is some chromatic aberration, but very little, especially for the price. It's also great if you want to dabble in astrophotography. You can easily gather enough light to photograph the milky way or Orion constellation, without buying a star tracker (if you use proper technique of course). There are a few things tho to think about if you consider this lens: The manual focus is motor controlled, which is somewhat annoying because it's not uncommon for the motor to just not respond to me rotating the focus wheel. I need to change to AF and back to MF for the motor to respond again. Not sure how common this bug is though, so your mileage may vary. Also, the look through the viewfinder is not entirely representative of the actual picture you get, at least with my camera. The focus point is at the same distance but objects that are out of focus are more out of focus in the actual image vs the viewfinder. The bokeh is also a lot harsher in the viewfinder. Nothing deal-breaking, just something worth pointing out. Another thing to think about is that you really need to confirm that the lens is actually autofocussing on the subject of interest at F/1.8. I was taking some portraits of my mother the other day and it was only in the postprocessing that I noticed that the camera autofocussed on her scarf instead of her face. You'd think "Whatever, those are basically the same distance anyways", especially since she was standing a good 10 feet away from the camera, but it did matter because her face was slightly out of focus, and people with very untrained eyes noticed that immediately. But this is an inherent thing with any F/1.8 lens, so nothing specific to this one, and you can always close the aperture a little. I know so far this post has talked mostly about the quirks it has, but honestly, this lens performs so well that those things are really nothing to lose sleep over. It's absolutely awesome and even if you want to use it for the sole purpose of learning how to shoot at F/1.8 for when you get a better lens down the line, this guy is 100% worth it. TL;DR It has a few small quirks but it's also so much value for the money that if you can afford it, don't even hesitate on getting it.
You get the lens that fits the framing that you want after crop factor is applied. It comes down to what you are going to do. If you want to do portraits, you can get the 50mm F1.8, as it offers the framing you would need for that. If you want to do products, the EF-S 24mm F2.8 STM or the EF-S 35mm F2.8 IS STM Macro might be better, depending on the products. For general shooting the 50mm tends to be a little too tight on a crop body, the other lenses are probably better for that, but your best bet is a fast zoom in that case. Something like the EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS USM, which is expensive (often 550 USD on sale), or the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 DC OS HSM (usually around 350 USD). Those will probably stay on your camera most of the time. My 17-55mm is on my number 2 camera just about all the time.
Love this lens. I got one of these when I got my 5DIV. I got the used older version of this lens for $35. You talked about the crop factor effecting the focal length. If you have one of the EOS-M cameras, Viltrox just released a focal reducer that adapts canon full frame glass onto the M series cameras, making something like th M-6 into basically the worlds smallest full frame Canon with DPAF.
Definitely stand by this 100% when I first started shooting, this was the first and lens that i had for like 2 years, and it was the original all plastic one. But it held up amazingly! another great video, keep up the great work bro!
@@70mjc Coming from the guy whose "price range is free giveaway", I'd say you can't afford to pass up /any/ free advice. I'm not the one having issues affording it.
I want to buy a 50mm lens. 1.8. would be nice. But I also look for an aperture ring. So I can adjust the aperture on the lens. Not in the camera. Does anyone has a idea which lens I should buy? I use a Canon 5d mk3 Thanks guys 😘😘
i checked it out and it looks very promising. i got one thing tho. the minimal focus distance is 1.5 ft. it sounds little far to me. what to do you think. is it fine? because i wont be able to shoot closeups of very small objects then,. right? (sorry for bothering you aurnhammer films)
I have a T3i, and after the kit lens, and a longer zoom lens the nifty fifty was the first lens I bought. I absolutely love this lens! My question about cropped sensor lenses is I thought that there were separate lenses for cropped sensor Canon DSLRs, and their full frame DSLRs. I guess because on B&H Photo under the DSLR lenses there is the option to click for Full Frame lenses, and APS-C lenses. Am I wrong in thinking this? It would be nice to know I haven't wasted all my money on lenses that won't fit a new camera when I upgrade to full frame.
Hands up if you already own this little gem! Also, I should have made this 3 minute Tuesdays.. LOL :)
Peter McKinnon 🙌🏻
Ha! Good video as always man!
so why not start three minute Thursdays
Yay!!! I was hoping it would be nifty fifty because I already have (and love!) it!
I’ve got one but I mostly do video. Since it doesn’t have I.S., I don’t use it much but I should revisit it.
Figured I'd come back to this video 3 years later and say something about this lens.

Ima do it as long as I can! They won't always be camera oriented though. Actually never planned for them to be strictly camera related.
The 50 was my first budget lens I ever bought back in 2012. Even with my go-to 18-35, 24, 70-200, etc. I still use that 50 to this day.

Underrated meaning that people usually assume it's just for beginners but actually punches beyond it's weight. Not unknown, which it is certainly not.
Its nicknames are: Plastic Fantastic or Nifty Fifty. Not an underrated lens by any standard.

Have it! Maybe ill make that the next 2 minute Tuesday! Depending on how many likes this reply gets ;)

let me guess similar to the shadow clone tutorial u did earlier its based off on masking annnd blending layers ?

Haha man I love that none of your 2-minute Tuesday videos are actually 2 minutes. Keep it up Pete, you've got the best channel on the tube.
This was the first lens I ever bought and has served me so well, especially for cinematography too.
It is good for recordings ?
This lens isn't underrated. People idolise it in every photography community I have ever been in.
Great lens. I dropped it a couple of days ago still working like a charm. Canon is a tank

Hey man, could you do a full video on aps-c vs full frame sensors?
May I suggest that you do a video review on the Yongnuo 50mm? It cost just about as many mm as it has.

Love your channel man... as an aspiring creator, I'm always grabbing valuable bits of knowledge/inspiration/direction from your videos. Thanks Peter!
First lens I bought besides my 18-135. Great lens! Great for portraits and close ups without owning a dedicated macro
Me too. And I also use 50mm more than 18-135. MAybe it's just a feeling because 18-135 is my kit lens, so 50mm is like an addition.
I LOVE this lens SO MUCH. its literally my favourite
I just bought it!!! Like literally just bought it. Sitting in a bus on my way home now. 😅 Can't wait to try it out!
What camera did you get it for and have you taken any shots and uploaded them anywhere?
It is amazing! The only downside is that it acts like a 80mm on my 80D. So, indoors is really difficult unless you need detail shots.
@rickydegove did u buy it?
Marina S Does it mount to Nikon etc.?
Suola Soosi when you order it, you can select the mount! I got mine off of Amazon and just selected canon mount. But you can choose another :)
Marina S Ooh sweet thank you
No I would stay with canon trust me couple more dollars will not hurt
Josh Houck not a little slow. It's actually very slow and annoying
Another amazing, exciting video, Peter! I learn so much from you and your level of enthusiasm is contagious. Also thanks for all the work you put into your links to help viewers. Subscriber from Florida.
I know we all came for the lens and your video intro was very well composed!
Love your videos Peter. Such an awesome and casual way to teach all the budding photographers of the world :)
I used to work at a photo gear shop while in college. We tested a all of our 50 1.8 against a all of our 50 1.4 and each time 50 1.8 was sharper at any aperture size. Best canon lens considering price.
No kidding I bought this lens the day after I watched this!
should I buy it?
Yuser Alhaj i recommend it and make sure you got the stm not the usm
hahahah good for you!
I just got this lens from a Second hand store in mint condition for $115 US. What a steal.
The 50mm lens gives my videos LIFE when we go to edit the shots!! Great lens
I looove this lens! 😍 This is my favorite lens to take outfit pic or in generell pics of people 👌🏽
my fav lens finally gets some love
As a newbie to this game and being on a budget, after seeing multiple views I decided to purchase one. It arrived yesterday and I am quite impressed with the build and the results. A little noisy when focusing but for this price lens noise is my least worry. Now I have change to spend on other funky stuff.
Who cares about the timer
I just bought this lens, I like it. Greetings from Romania.
Pete, can you do a 2min Tuesday vid or a full blown tutorial on shooting action sports ( camera settings help etc )? Your videos are the best on the net man!🇿🇦
Just a heads up if your rocking a Panasonic mirrorless camera, the equivalent is the 25mm F/1.7. I love this lens
APBTV lol. I was thinking the same thing.
I have one for sale in excellent condition !:)
Not equivalent in terms of bokeh
Visual Expression NY still for sale?
Yes, this lens is underrated. Except for the fact that it is on EVERY must have/best budget/best cheap/best prime/best canon lens list.
I think what they mean is that it’s so cheap people expect it to be cheap quality
Frankly I prefer the 35 for apsc as a general lens, also takes amazing portraits
Does it have a similar effect on portraits as a 85 mm FF lens? I.e the sort of compressed result
Isn't that just fun to say? NIFTY FIFTY!?
Great video Pete! :)
Yeah I can't stop saying it when I am shooting with it.
I know right!
Haha! That's GREAT!!
🤚 got a gently used ef f/1.4 from a pro who didn't use it enough. Super versatile
In what universe it's underrated? Literally the most sold Canon lens ever. And far from everyone needs it. Even with the Canon.
So much anxiety with you shaking the lens constantly haha. My favorite lens in my kit, by far. Good stuff.
Just got mine!! Absolutely love it!! Can’t wait to shoot tons of pics!! Now to get the overcast weather to clear up....it’s been weeks!!
"Most underrated lens" - shows Canon 50mm 1.8... well excuse me that lens is definitely not underrated in any way
I kind of thought the same thing. All I ever hear is how great that lens is for it's price.
85mm?
Tom Donaghy I prefer full frame, 85mm
guys this was 3 years ago
Peter! Thanks for all the incredible content, nice to see this type of stuff being made in the True North! Can you do a video comparing the different camera systems? i.e. micro 4 3rds, full frame and APS-C? Like if you agree!
Was just playing around with this lens and found that it’s not great for run and gun vlogging BUT am fortunate to have it for photography!
watched this vid a few days ago went out and got a 50mm and cant live without i now
The second lens I bought
what's the first one?
it's the first for me
18-135mm zoom lense
yeah me too! after the kit one 😂😂
I bought this for mark iv and i regret
This lens is so important. It was the gateway for everyone!
Me: "Huh, Peter just uploaded a video. Too bad it's not Tues-"
Peter: "Oooooh it's Tuesday!!"
Me: "WAIT A MINUTE LET'S GOOO" 😂
I thought he’s gonna say “Let’s role that joint” 😂😂😂
Thank you for explaining the crop sensor like that! That made complete sense, I borrowed a buddies 50mm for my cannon 800D and was wondering why everything seemed so zoomed in. Now I know I need to get something more like a 35!
I see a lot of photographers have one of this lens either the 1.4 or the 1.2 and the 1.8 I use to have the 1.2 dam that lense would give me killer shots
I trade it in for 24 to 70 2.8 now i would say i do miss it.
It it still worth getting this lens for a cropped sensor?
Better go for a 35mm f1.8 for apsc
I used it on a crop sensor for a long time. It becomes an 80mm +/- on a crop. Still very usable but also limiting at the same time. 35ish mm will bring you to about 50mm on a full.
@@harexe6306 that lens also costs $300 more...
@@daniela9171 Idk about sony and cannon but a Nikkor DX 35mm f1.8 costs around 180€ new on amazon
i got mine with my camera as a kit with 18-55mm lens , but i tend to use the 18-55mm lens alot more , as it's the only lens i take out when i'm going out for the day sometimes .
When you beat the notification! 💪🏻
Savage
Whoops. I just became $125 poorer. 🙃
Haha I love it’s that easy for you! How did it go so far?
This was the first lens I bought for my Nikon back in the day and will be the first lens I buy when I upgrade to a Sony.
Oh, cool! You have a portal gun too!? 😘
Hahaha
Wait, so what lens do I get if I DO have a Canon t7i and want the 50mm?
35mm, because of the crop factor it will be the equivalent to 56mm.
@@Ocaoj But what lens? Not what length!
I bought this for mark iv but I regret better buy L series len for full frame
Whats your opinion on the T7i?
Hey, why don't you tell us about the most underrated zoom lens everyone needs...
Anwar Ehtesham 50mil AF lens
I would go with Canon 70-200mm f4 L
55-250 f4
I just need the 24-70... I am just loving that lens
There is none.
Thanks for explaining how having a cropped sensor affects the focal length it’s something I didn’t realise for a long time
Way back in the 1980s they used to provide a 50mm as a kit lens with every SLR.
They were also all "Full Frame" for film.
when he "whoop" the lens. My heart skipped a beat
i used to work with a photographer who would throw around his 5D Mk4 like a football hahah
Definitely stand by this 100% when I first started shooting, this was the first and lens that i had for like 2 years, and it was the original all plastic one. But it held up amazingly! another great video, keep up the great work bro!
Also referred to as “the plastic fantastic”
OMG! Love that! hahahaha yes.
Title edit: The most UNDERRATED lens EVERYONE (with a Canon) needs
You can buy adapters to use different brands of lens
Matt Zusinas ya, because adapters are so great... n00b
@@70mjc Coming from the guy whose "price range is free giveaway", I'd say you can't afford to pass up /any/ free advice. I'm not the one having issues affording it.
Well, it's not like other brands don't have equivalent lenses.
My first film camera when I was 16 was a Yashica with a 50 mm 1.4 lens. My favorite lens. Excellent images from what I remember.
My first go-to lens on every camera
I want to buy a 50mm lens.
1.8. would be nice.
But I also look for an aperture ring. So I can adjust the aperture on the lens. Not in the camera.
Does anyone has a idea which lens I should buy?
I use a Canon 5d mk3
Thanks guys 😘😘
Infancinema what’s your budget ?
BausHouseTV around 500-600$
Try the Rokinon 50mm
i checked it out and it looks very promising. i got one thing tho. the minimal focus distance is 1.5 ft. it sounds little far to me. what to do you think. is it fine? because i wont be able to shoot closeups of very small objects then,. right? (sorry for bothering you aurnhammer films)
Infancinema that's kinda a deal breaker for your case. The. Why do you want a lens with an aperture ring by the way?
When you already use this lens and Pete recommends it, yaasssssss
Liam's Life same
I have a T3i, and after the kit lens, and a longer zoom lens the nifty fifty was the first lens I bought.
It would be nice to know I haven't wasted all my money on lenses that won't fit a new camera when I upgrade to full frame.
finally, i found someone that speaks my language :) that's newbie language hahaha
