I understand us' concerns w a brics "currency", but also a great plan for developing nations and global economy. I believe there is already a payment system in place between certain countries to trade using local currency. Their might be painful in the short term for both sides, ie brics and us but will be beneficial in stabilizing the global economy long term. Also, a threat of a 100 % tariff overlooks the fact that trade between brics nations will increase if a local currency or payment system is introduced between all brics nations, and the buying power of these countries should not be overlooked. The united states might end up being the biggest loser if these tariffs are introduced.
Also these transaction will happen out of the swift payment system which US can’t snoop on to it .

Russia would not be bank if it didn't need to trade using usd. Not making a value judgements just stating facts. Currently tarrifs on imports in most brics nations are extremely high because us dollars can't be allocated for non essential imports. Trading using brics payment would lower inflation in these countries. Example, in ethiopia tariffs on imports can be as high as 300%. This is in country where a 100 usd salary is viewed as being competitive. That said, by potential i am looking at the population growth. Any person is a potential buyer. That said 3 billion people in china and india and china...not including fast population growth in africa with disproportiona number of residents are under 30. That is buying potential that could be realized w intro of brics paymebt system/ agreemebt. From a us perspective brics currency is not beneficial as it marks the official decline of the us in the global economy, but from a global perspective of "the south" makes sense for brics nations. Politicians do what is best for their country, so not necessarily criticizing trump's attempt at addressing issue, but concerned it will back fire.
