Just stumbled in to this channel somehow . Immediately hit like and sub after the vid. Only vikings changes the propeller shaft sealing in the water, and not on the hard! Now time to watch you from start!
Excellent choice to mount a PSS. That's the best sealing! You will never more have any leakage, as long as it's only lubricated by water. Grease will damage the surfaces between the ceramics and the steel ring.
Nice job on the repairs! Admire your spirit and tenacity! BTW, Tefgel applied between the shaft and half coupler will make future removal much easier. Hope you luck improves!
You may want to get yourself a couple of large wooden oars which are purpose built to last as opposed to rigging something up which is bound to fail. They can be strapped by rope where convenient to be an emeregency rudder. Should be mandatory on all fin rudder boats.
Look at that pretty new anchor, but even when they wrap them, you can always tell what they are. Really sorry to hear about the bad luck, seems at times that happens in multiples, and went through one of those periods of time recently myself, better now, and hope it is for you as well :) A tip; if you ever take that shaft coupling apart again, put a thin piece of rubber in between cut to fit the larger part, to act as a alignment helper and also to dampen vibration from the engine to the boat, it really works, try it, and it can just be a layer of inner tube or the like.
The coupling bolts are a puller with an extra three longer ones of the same diametre. Take off the retaining nut like you did then put a nut between the end of the shaft and the engine coupling put the coupling bolts back in and do them up and the nut will push the shaft away from the shaft coupling as do tighten them with some sharp hits with a ball peen hammer, keep tightening until the bolts run out of thread then remove them and place longer bolts and a bigger nut or two together between the shaft and the engine coupling and repeat. This type of coupling puller is far superior puller than a bearing puller and a ball peen hammer will not bend or damage the shaft as you are hitting the shaft coupling with it. For the next shaft extraction.
Great video , many thanks to you captain , I really like it very much. . I am sailing alone around the world. I am living in Kauai island, one of the most beautiful beautiful island on the planet . Fair winds and following seas
I am so happy for you guys. Fantastic team work and repairs while on the water. I look forward to watching many more years of great sailing videos. Stay happy and safe.
I have just discovered your terrific channel. You handled your rudder crisis with calm competence... well done. Fair winds and following seas to you both.
Just found your channel and subscribed! Great job doing what had to be done in the situation! Keeping calm is key and y'all did great! I am just happy for my skeg hung old style rudder now. lol! :)
Wow, I just recognized your neighbor/helper at 19:30 as my old dock mate/neighbor "Chuck" from Long Beach USA. I haven't spoken to him for years, but last we spoke he was planning to head to the South Pacific. So cool to see he made it! Hvis dere ser ham igen saa kan du hilse ham fra Eric og Silje. Tusind takk for videoen!
Vad roligt! Både Chuck och Lori var underbara!! Vi lovar att hälsa honom om vi möts igen. 😀 Detsamma, hälsa dem från oss om du möter dem före. Tusen tack för att du tittade!
@ 8:04 - With nothing to do in a free moment while fixing a leaking propellor shaft and replacing a missing rudder, Oskar decided to do some repairs to Lisa's tummy. And an expert job he did too. No leaks. No squeaks. Sadly, the proof of his surgical skill is on a GoPro, 35 metres down in Davey Jones' locker. Oh well, there'll be another chance.
Haha, I/Lisa burned on the oven (happened a few times) and then I didn't want any sun or dirt on that. 😜 Let's hope there won't be any surgeries onboard! 😃
I have real good luck with the shaft seal, nice job of installing, for safety please install the safety ring on shaft behind the SS ring . If the main ring slip you will have a bad day. Have you got one?
I know the feeling. I lost my Sony Action Cam in July diving off of Delray Beach, FL. At least it will make someone happy, as the area is frequently dove.
Next time put antiseeze on the shaft before putting the coupling back on. Also called Never antiseeze. Grease with aluminum in it keeps it from freezing up.
We will definitely visit Chesapeake Bay! That's one of the places we've been talking a lot about and we hope we will be there in a few months. We would love to meet you then.
i would take a small buoy to locate me at all times, specially during the ascent because there may be incoming vessels in your direction and with a buoy they will at least give a few meters of clearance. it also allows for your partner to know, at all times, where you are in case you need assistance.
Yes, we did that too in the beginning but the boats did not seem to notice it.. At the same time Lisa also stood on foredeck with a dive flag but that did not seem to work either. Strange and a bit scary.☺️ That's when we decided to tie a rope from the boat to the bottom and then to Oskar instead. ☺️
Usually you can find a hole on the side of the coupling that houses an allen grub nut and a key. Use an allen key wrench to remove it and the coupling will fall right off. *Do not force it off if there is a key or you will ruin the threads!* If it doesn't have that then DIY a puller plate from parts you can find at a scrapyard. This works way better than a gear puller. Here's a demo video. ruclips.net/video/ZEnGmLv9B1Q/видео.html
geez what a pain in the ass sailboats are if it can go wrong it will ive been sailing for 40yrs on my boat and ive never checked the rudder it hasnt gone wrong but just about everything else has so i just keep the boat at a mooring now and sip tea and read books
I don't know the exact economics of it, but unless you have a really large subscriber base and each video gets a lot of views, then I'm under the impression you really don't make much money from it and its an annoyance to your viewers. If I recall correctly, there was a time a while back when RUclips changed the rates for ads, and a lot of channels lost a lot of income. I'm sure you can find the details if you Google it. Some were calling it the adpocalypse because of the disastrous effect it had on their monetization of their content. That's why a lot of the channels are not so heavily focused on Patreon for people to support them.
We have some ads and don't want it to be to much but we really don't know how much it would help for the economy. Like Peter wrote maybe people will be annoyed? :) Anyhow, we think it's good if it's for free but if someone wants to support the production on Patreon we are of course more than happy.. 😀 That's a huge help and if we earn some money there we invest in camera gear etc. Also, it takes a lot of time to do the editing so if we get a few dollars per episode we really appreciate it. 😀
That's one very lucky guy.
You two are a great Team. Love your videos.
Very likable couple. Hard working. Swedish quality 😊
You guys are amazing. I hope you guys continue sailing on for many more years. 👍👍👍
Thank you so much! We will probably be back in Sweden next year but you never know. ☺️

😀
Well done for all you managed to do with your boat in the water.
Thank you so much!

We are going to install one on our shaft as well. Probably the best on the market!
I love the chain weight belt.
Nice job on the repairs! Admire your spirit and tenacity! BTW, Tefgel applied between the shaft and half coupler will make future removal much easier. Hope you luck improves!
Good to keep a tether safety line attached to the camera

Some fantastic team work as always!
You guys are so very likable and the content is entertaining. I’m subscribing now.
Is it just me, or am I hearing voices in my head singing ABBA songs? Great you have your rudder back. Looking forward to see more of your videos.
Excellent job with the boat in the water well done you two!!
Congratulations on getting the rudder and installed. Looking forward to watching more of your adventures!

They should print your reply and save it in their manual, well said.

Wonderful work
Positive energy from you is inspiring
Thanks
Ah Majuro...you bring back a lot of memories for us there. We had to re-mast our boat there! -Rebecca
Very beautiful 😍👍

Good vid ya'll.
Good job. Always work on the boat for sure. ⛵
You guys did such an amazing job fixing Hilma! Excited to see more adventures!
Thank you Mike! We hope we'll meet one day! 🤗
Try Marvel Mystery Oil as a penetrant for nuts bolts and couplers. I have had good luck with it.
Haha Great Job with the shaft seal change. I'll have to do the same on my boat in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed! 😎😜
LOL - I just replaced a PSS with the same Volvo Penta shaft seal you replaced with your PSS!
Great job in fixing shaft seal & rudder, fair winds ⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵

good job, good you
Thank you very much! ☺️
You've got a new friend in Syracuse New York. I just subscribed 😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very nice video. Thank you!👍

Hmm, we are not sure we understand. :) We installed everything we got in the package but is that something extra?
15:23 lots of little clips here with the vibration and below the waterline is a risk. Two constant-tension hoseclamps on one hose much safer.
I know the feeling. I lost my Sony Action Cam in July diving off of Delray Beach, FL. At least it will make someone happy, as the area is frequently dove.
Oh, that's sad to hear. Sometimes there is just bad luck.. It's a shame but maybe someone got happy then.. 😏
Bra jobbat! Ibland blir saker fel, det innebär inte att ni är drabbade av dålig karma. Det är bara livet som hälsar på. Keep on trucking!!!!
Tack så mycket! Det har du rätt i. Ibland har man oflyt helt enkelt. 😀
Next time put antiseeze on the shaft before putting the coupling back on. Also called Never antiseeze. Grease with aluminum in it keeps it from freezing up.
Come on around to the Chesapeake Bay for cocktails, I could use some help on my new live aboard world traveler! Narrowed my decision down to 3.
We will definitely visit Chesapeake Bay! That's one of the places we've been talking a lot about and we hope we will be there in a few months. We would love to meet you then.
@@HilmaSailing , Awesome! I'm going up to Annapolis tomorrow to look at a 44' Cutter. I hope the owner takes my offer. Good luck guys and be safe!
Good luck!
I nearly didn't spot that Abba song!!
You guys are tough! I don't think there is anything you can't figure out.......and fix

Guys great work.. and no backward steps .. just a question. Where there rudder came from Jefa Marine in DK? Or from Jeanneau ? Fair winds safe seas
dont forget about Rudder Craft from the states
Thank you. It came from Jeanneau :)
geez what a pain in the ass sailboats are if it can go wrong it will ive been sailing for 40yrs on my boat and ive never checked the rudder it hasnt gone wrong but just about everything else has so i just keep the boat at a mooring now and sip tea and read books
And we torture ourselves "Because Why"? = Adventure.
Oscar, du simmar ur bild!
why don't you guys add ads in the yt vids to make extra money?
