I can’t believe this video came out four years ago. I still remember watching it right after it was posted. Y’all have really helped me in my career. Tips and tricks, exposure to things I hadn’t seen before. It’s much appreciated.
Thanks for sharing
One tip I can add is don't overdo the amount of mud on the surface. It's surprising how much texture you can impart with a suttle wave or void once it's painted over. You don't want to end up having it look Gothic and clunky. Also, work a bigger area like you were doing and sweep 2-3 feet at a time and fairly rapidly so it doesn't look like a bunch of small quadrants stitched together.
Thanks for sharing Uncle
Thank you!! I am a diy-er and I was way over thinking the process of texturizing. You guys stay blessed!!!
You both are my favourite here on RUclips. I've learnt so much.
Nice and fun video, plus thumbs up for Boise, Id. II also liked the two way communication.
TOOO wordy couldn't stand to wait!!!
Yeah man the like first 6 minutes, come on move it along are you guys in a Union ? Less drag this out 🙄, I gots shits to be a doing
i like how you guys consult each with advice for the job , that good team work
HELP! How do I prep a painted wall so I can apply texture? Someone applied patch to a textures wall so now the patch area is flat and does not match the surrounding knockdown texture. Can I texture over the paint? Should I sand it down somehow? Does it need primer? Thanks!
thanks for sharing Some of my walls have been floated and now I'm going to texture to cover up nail that have popped through and a few cracks that have appeared. I'm from Idaho but ow live in Texas 30 years. You do a good job and made it easy to understand
Thank you for sharing👍
Thanks guys, this was exactly the texturing style I was looking for. So many other videos are on RUclips that show every other texture and I don’t like any of them. This is what all wall texture should look like.
Glad to help
Yes, Sun Valley Texture is in all the lodges at sun valley ski resort. I do it with a pan and knife and yeah it's fun lol. Been doing Sun Valley texture for over 20 years in business 32 years, Classy Drywall. Mountain Home Idaho.
I really appreciate and enjoy you guys video thanks for all your help.
they keep talking until 6:30. Skip to that.
First time I tried this it was in the master bath if my house where the owner had painted over gloss paint with no prep. I have never seen paint peel like that. Not knowing anything about doing this I used 20 minute mud. It came out surprisingly well, just had to work very fast. It was a small bath though. I did know how to use a trowel though as I did decorative concrete.
Thanks for sharing!
My dream would be to paint one day with the Idaho painters crew !
The choice of tools is even more localized. I'm in Western New York and I use the hawk and knife combo. What's with Chris' application being sped up? A very nice tutorial! Thanks gents!
the house I may buy haas bamboo composite panels, I am thinking about doing this over them, as some of the panels are bowing and the joints aren't flush, I like the looks of this. the bamboo panels are unfinished and slightly textured (not smooth) can I just put this right over them? or do I have to do something to it first?
thanks so much guys. i love Boise, ID.
Great video!! I tried this method of texture on my garage and I Feel like I did an OK job! I posted the video on my channel and It may not be perfect but I am happy with the results!!
Such a great video. Every painter should have basic experience with mud and texture. If you work for a company, your boss will love you for it.
I work a 4x8 section applying a skim coat then using my hawk to dab then knock down. Customer loved it.
Nice
It's a little hard to see the application from that angle, but still, great video. You guys are great at explaining your processes.
Hey brother Love stuff you do have a ceiling bumpity bump any suggestion how to hit the flat spots I
Do you ever get bubbles? We do alot of drywall with our paint jobs and usg +3 lightweight mud is superior for a Santa fe texture! You should try it, you will like the consistency and flow. Love the videos.
Lol - y'all are entertaining! Thx!
Hi Criss and John in Mexico that teckny it’s very popular I used to do there whit my father 1 coat the primer and two coats the spackle and lucks like skin coat 1 Moore coat primer and 2coats the paint and this lucks nice and smooth like you said everybody work diferent and the texture always lucks diferent
Yes, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing. Idaho falls, Idaho
I mixed mine with paint then finished with wax looks awesome not sure if I destrengthened it though ?
Up north chris says, I use a hawk because if your mud dries out in your mud box it's very hard to clean out!
Some of the old timers would add sand into their mixture, and that is where the name "skip trowel" came in, since as you spread it on the wall it causes the trowel to jump and leave these voids. It is a great way for beginners to learn. Another tip is that you can always just scrape it off the wall and start again if you dont like how it turns out. Lastly, if you sand using a lightly wetted sponge, it creates no dust and you get a very smooth finish. Im in Caldwell Chris, I could even swing by a local job next time you are doing texture and show you some tips if you would like. Im up in Donnelly doong this right now and used your video to show the homeowner how easy it is.
Thanks for sharing
Do I need to apply a coat of primer before painting over this texture?
Starts at 6:50
If I'm going to texture do I have to sand
Great how-to video, Guys. I was thinking you oughta' be plumbers, cause you really know your shit. That's an old plumber joke, I was a plumber apprentice in 1963, then changed my book to pipefitter. Anyway, I'm getting ready to drywall my basement and, as it so happens, my new house was all done in Santa Fe, or Sun Valley, texture. We're in Idaho Falls so that's probably common here. Thank you so much for a great video. I think, maybe, with a little practice, I can do a reasonable job of matching the texture we have in the rest of the house. I like your technique, and I like your personalities. You make the video fun to watch, as well as instructional. Good job. Thanks again.
I would have liked to see the final result clear and up close, good vid tho guys, thank you.
Good idea, thanks for the feedback Tommy!
Thanks for the tutorial, guys! This Boise Native is appreciative : )
Sherwin Williams non shrink spackle can be troweled thin for an ultra low texture. It dries quickly and is ready for paint. NO DUST. NO THINNING. Strike it on hard to make it go far. I still have the sample board I did and this texture is stable.
Yes you can buy it dry, I buy it in 50 lb bags, and mix it up on the more fluid side and dump it into my mini hopper with a spray gun fed by air compressor that I use to shoot onto the walls and knockdown 10 minutes later to give a thin stucco texture tot he drywall.
Would love to see the finish product!
We'll have to show it
Oh cool! They are live at 7:00 pm on Mondays. It seems they have a free giveaway, too, on Mondays during their live stream @ 7pm.
Go ahead with your bad self boys
I would highly recommend Kirk Giordano plastering on RUclips. He and his family have great interior and exterior plaster videos.
Thanks for the video. I'm looking for ideas on different textures as I don't necessarily want the knockdown or orange peel that's so common in wall texturing.
Thanks for watching Jesse!
How do you do inner and outer corners?
Smaller tools
Hey, did you guys know they are live every Monday at 7:00 pm and they have a free giveaway?!
So, is that drywall compound or topping?
Dear Idaho painter, I have been watching your videos for a long time now and half of what I know about painting is from you (the other half is from messing up lol) but I am in need of some help! I'm Remodeling an entire house right now and two things: 1 how do I patch perlite wall texture? And I'm removing all of the popcorn from the ceilings and going back with orange peel. My problem is that I'm getting lines in my ceiling paint. I'm priming two coats with kilz PVA primer (spraying and backrolling) and then painting the ceiling with sherwin Williams eminence (flat) and purdy rollers. How can I prevent lines in the ceiling paint?
Alex Johnson well what I've done is I would spray the ceiling with plenty of paint and if your rolling add some floetrol or water to the paint so it can level out
Best thing is to just roll it.
New Generation Painters NGP inc I thought about adding floetrol but the eminence from sherwin is already pretty thin. But I guess it wouldn't hurt to try haha
Alex Johnson more then likely not enough paint. You need to soak the ceilings.
I now have a craving for pancakes.
I do a lot of drywall jobs in Phoenix and I know that
I had to replace a whole room of drywall because my son lost his mind and knocked holes in it the guys that hung it didn't do any finishing and I'm trying to figure out how to get this done by myself. I'm disabled and don't have money to pay someone. I'm in Boise. Do you guys know any organizations that help people in situations like this?
I do not
Can you do this texture on old painted walls?
Yes you can
Great to learn the technique, but would have loved to see the actual results on the wall.
OK
in lewiston we call that the holy smooth
lol
Did you thin the compound before spreading it?
Serge Shariy watch the video. He explained that.
Yes.
Does this dry white?
Yes
Every cell in my body want to make the wall as smooth as possible. No one here in Sweden wants texture.
Where I'm from, we call this giving the wall character... lol
lol, thats what it does
Long story short, old house, lots of wallpaper, including the ceiling! I think I’m down to sheet rock, did you say we don’t need to primer anything when using this type of product?
No finished update?
Coming
You need to put a SET in your trowel. Less lines in your mud
Why is John Cena texturing? :P
You should do close up so we can see how the texture looks like because from the distance you filmed we can see only mod in the wall
OK
oh with a name like sun valley, I thought you were in Arizona
So he said use eye protection and immediately the guy goes to apply it and zero eye protection?😅 Absolutely no shade here, just an observation lol You guys are great 🌹
OK
Nice instruction but can't really see what the texture looks like.
Next time
Najbolji si brate full
Thanks for watching!
×2 speed your wellcome
yep
That’s not a skip trowel texture as I learned it because the trowel is actually supposed to skip over the wall but I would sure like to see it when it’s painted
Lol good taste in trowel brand I use the same one, but needa practice more with ur trowel up. Not trying to hate just giving friendly advice.
Thanks for the advice!
Guys you should do a vid on your foot wear. Being on your feet all day is not insignificant. Do you guys have a warm up routing?
That is a good idea!
Should call it the trap house texture
John cena !?
This is the most homoerotic thing I've ever seen 😲
I like to use peanut butter instead
I really believe those kind of textures on drywall were invented because someone messed up and someone actually liked it so it became norm.
Are you guys couple? Cause I gotta say, ya'll are just adorable together...
I thought it was some new style of texture.
*sees tattoo dude* *wonders how many comments it'll take to find John Cena reference* *checks*
2. The answer was 2 comments, ladies and gentlemen.
LOL
So basically it's a skip trowel
Don't get better at it, as you go around the room.
For some reason I think you guys fucked up that wall.
looks good .... but if I were you id stick to paint... y'all are way better at painting. thanks for the tutorial anyway
Agreed, but sometimes our customers ask this of us
Mud way too stiff
Sweet Jesus get to the point
There is this really cool feature you should learn how to use, its called fast forwarding. But, im sure you know that already, since you dont need any extra info. I mean, why are you even watching the video if you dont need any tips? Maybe you should make your own video to show us all how to properly do it? Carry on
Boizee 🤔
That’s not skip trowel is Santa fe
RPG 37 I said it’s called sun valley texture here if you listen and read the title
And people actually pay for that look.
Two muders, lol
Can't get to the minute 4:30 without skipping........go to the point, you just talk too much!
ok
Sorry buddy that's not skip trowel......
Yeah?
Paul Zepeda I said it was sun valley texture here in Idaho if you listen and read the title
@@matdomm Painter always gotta give other painters a hard time. I could roast him on this so called Sun Valley but he did his best and these days thats a rarity.
Anyone can slap mud on a wall and pretend they're a specialty expert. Making it look good rather than coating the whole wall and getting it done quickly unlike what you're doing is another story.
Talking too much just show me what I looked up for god damn
You guys should talk less. Get to the point!
That is hideous
Entirely toooooooooooo much talking beforehand.. thumbs down for me
You boys talk to to much come on just get to it
You guys talk to much ...
a 3 minute video stretched to 17 min with a lot "mansplaining" UGH
