    Macbooks older than 2012 no longer support the latest operating systems from Apple. In this case I use a 2011 Macbook air and the Dosdude1 catalina patcher to force upgrade it to Catalina!
    Do you want to run Catalina on a 2011 Macbook air, Macbook pro 15 or Macbook pro 13? Check it out!

    Heres my guess on what will happen with the mac os support and the Apple Silicon transition. The Apple Silicon transition will probably finish in the middle to end of 2022. Whatever mac os comes out in late 2023 will probably be the last to support intel. Then the mac os that comes out end of 2024 will not support intel and will be ARM only. This is just my opinion looking at how the power pc to intel transition went, and how apple releases mac os now. So if you buy a mac now, don't expect to get 7 years of updates. Also, when tim cook said they would support intel macs for "years to come" thats very vague. It could mean 3 years, 7 years, or 70000 years, we just don't know. Anyhow, that's how I think it will turn out, but it could very obviously be different. Also, I definitely think apple is going to pull another kind of powerpc thing with apple silicon and make some of the most powerful personal computers. Do you think that apple is going to do that?

    • @messing-with-computers
      @messing-with-computers  4 года назад +1

    • @TejasviKapur
      @TejasviKapur 3 года назад +4

      No it isn't. Keep using high sierra or get a new M1 mac. Even the 2012's struggle with Catalina even though being officially supported. And with 2011, you'd have weird graphic anomalies like transparency issues,menu bar issues,occasional camera and wifi issues and what not. Don't even bother updating. You don't know that High Sierra was the most optimised version of macOS in year after Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard. I suggest please get the base model M1 macbook air. I've personally tested it. You don't need 16 gigs of ram in that device. That's the power of Apple Silicon. It's not as ram hungry as Intel.

The only things that don't work for me are sidecar obviously and the auto light dark mode. Also, the fan gets really loud on my 11 inch even just watching youtube now a days in chrome. Does the 13 inch fan get loud or is that just the 11 inch? Because the 2015 macbook air I used the other day didn't turn on the fan at all unless I ran cinebench or unigine heaven.

      The issue with the 2011... is going to be the out of the box Video Card. You will want to have a fallback if it runs poorly, cause everything I have read is that if you disable the radeon GPU things will work better than if the radeon GPU tries to act as the primary video card (unsupported as hell in catalina)

    • @jovial469
      @jovial469 4 года назад +1

      @ Corey Squires, Once you installed High Sierra, your file system changed from HFS+ to APFS. APFS is good for newer hardware, but is especially demanding with older hardware. Do some research, there is a way of keeping HFS+ as the file system. I made a usb loader with Mojave, then used it as source to install in HFS+ according to those instructions (can't find it anymore), and created a RAID 0. So, now, I have Mojave in HFS+, with RAID 0 configuration. It's freaking fast, mine is a mid-2012 15 inch MBP.
      For your MBP 2011, if it's a 13 inch it will be an A1278, if it's a 15 inch, it will be an A1286. These models from 2011 (unlike 2012) use PC3-10600MHz memory RAMs. The 2012s use PC3-12800 MHz memory RAMs. My first advice, install 2 sticks of 8 GB each, PC3-!0600 MHz, DDR3L ("L" for low voltage - 1.35V), then install a 1 TB SSD (they're cheap now), and only then do the installation of the OS. You will see a huge speed gain, especially if you manage to keep the HFS+ file system.

      @@dashdigital5869 I have both El Capitan and High Sierra on my older MacBook Pro for software that is no longer supported in Catalina. Adobe CS4 on El Capitan works perfectly on it. High Sierra for other things like games and web browser support.
      EDIT: If your drive is big enough, you can have two partitions on it and switch back and fourth between OS's. Saves time and the hassle of reinstalling an older OS and such.
      Just don't delete anything while adding a partition if you go that route. Look up a few guides for having multiple OS's on a single system.
