Great to see two legends together, but I have to say, I was more amazed at the SIZE of those seats! They were enormous! Was there ever a time when plane seats were THAT big? I've certainly never had the pleasure of sitting in any that size!
My parents react to me watching classic movies the same way. When I started watching old Westerns (among them the ones Clint Eastwood starred in), my mom would tell me that my Grandpa, her father, would have sat with me to watch the movies with me, since he enjoyed old Westerns during his time. God, if only I could have watched those films sooner back when my Grandpa was still alive. :(
My dad had me watching both of these guys when i was tiny. They both are great and very different. Gene pulled the audience towards him when he pulled tight toward the center. Fred fed elegance when he stood up tall and elongated his form so grace moved with him. both were extraordinaire with their choreographic abilities.
Wow...never saw this. If this was 1985, Mr. Astaire was nearly 86 at filming and two years away from immortality....a wonderful and stylish coda for both him and Mr. Kelly.
For those comparing the more athletic Gene Kelly to the more graceful Fred Astaire, a few observations. I believe someone claimed that only Fred was classically trained. Actually Gene ran a dance school as a young dancer and is known for consciously adding ballet to films such as "American in Paris" and "Invitation to the Dance". Also, I feel neither dancer was better than the ever. Their approaches were different but equally viable. However, some fans prefer one style over the other.
You are right...it's sad really when I mention older stars (the greats) as I call them....kids look at me like I have lost my mind. They really do not know what they are missing. I love all the old musicals, the older comedy teams, film noir, westerns, ect. I am glad someone your age has gained an appreciation for them :)
I used to watch black and white movies when I was a kid and even pretended to be sick and missed the school disco as I was too embarrassed to say an old movie I wanted to watch was on!
...types of actors: hard working everyday types, characters, movers and shakers, legends, and those who leave us too soon...and Fred and Gene were all of the above (and Ginger, too.)
Actually those aren't spats. They're two-tone tassel loafers. Spats are made of fabric that partially covers the shoe and has buttons on the side. They were popular with formal wear from about 1900-1940.
Don't need thumbs up or down on a stupid plane these were ICONS what the hell is this person who put this up thinking THE BEST DANCERS OF THAT TIME HOW DARE YOU DEGRADE THEM
What a contrast, eh, when you think about it... From the 1930's to the 1980's... Worlds apart... Mind you, with the depression looming, we might be going back to visit the30's. :) I hope Fred and Ginger are there!
I like it that at 0:10 in that shot of their shoes it probably wasn't them but some unknown doubles. That's how movies are made. If you can't see their faces in the shot, especially big stars, it's not them. 😊
dos grandes del baile de verdad nadie como ellos..sus musicales son los mejores ..dos artistas dignos de admiracion. viviran siempre en los recuerdos de las nuevas generaciones que de verdad le den un caracter genial a el baile.
Man, how crazy is it that we have to grow old and die? The aging process is so lame. We spend out whole young lives waiting to grow up and one day-we never know precisely which one-but one day the process reverses and we start to decline. I just pray to Christ there’s no Hell.
Western Airlines...they were at terminal 5 @ LAX the majority of US airlines were first class!! what happened? well, I don´t see nothing wrong about doing commercials for that was a privilege for the airline to have an unforgetable pair like that!!
@hellasexy22 Haha woops, that's true, but they meant something different back then, you know? The use and context changed. Like "kid": here, it's a term of endearment, but now it's more often used as an informal synonym for "child." :) All the same, Gene and Fred were adorable ^_^
Hm, I disagree completely. Fred had classically better technique, but Gene had more character in his dances--flair, if you will. Individually, I've always preferred watching Gene. Fred with Ginger, on the other hand, well, there's yet to be a pairing that has even come close to matching their magic.
Uh, your opinion. I'd say Rita Hayworth far outdanced Fred in You Were Never Lovelier. His upper carriage was completely stiff compared to hers, but again, it's a stylistic difference. Fred was classically trained while Rita had a background in jazz, and therein lies the difference in the upper body movement.
fred made it look so easy, showed effort through face movements, i hate hearing this bullshit, " YOU CANT COMPARE THEM, THEY HAVE DIFFERENT STRENGTHS." dancing is dancing, fred out danced EVERYONE, EXCEPT eleanor powell...
See, I'd disagree. I suppose technically, Fred was the superior, but I've always enjoyed watching Gene more, at least in solo dances. Gene had more flair in his dancing--he was more of a character dancer, infusing more acting into his dancing. But of course, that's my opinion.
i disagree, fred outdanced everyone i ever saw, rita hayworth didnt evenhave a chance to compare herself with fred. but thats my opinion, and your opinion is yours, and i respect your opinion :)
Awwww how cute are they.
Real professionals, make acting look so simple, like their dancing!
This is GREAT!!!
love both of them. They still looked so great in 1985! Isn't that Marvelous? I love their language, so amiable.
Two unsurpassed Masters in the Autumn of their lives ..... utterly charming. We will probably never see their likes again.
Great to see two legends together, but I have to say, I was more amazed at the SIZE of those seats! They were enormous! Was there ever a time when plane seats were THAT big? I've certainly never had the pleasure of sitting in any that size!
They were obviously in first class.
Gene and Fred actually looked so amazing in this ad they were glowing!!! :)
Astaire is wearing the shoes from The Babbit And The Bromide. Classic!
My parents react to me watching classic movies the same way. They say only the good die young. Fred and Gene disprove that
Imagine walking onto a plane and seeing that in first class
Two of America`s greatest dancers and finest actors! And Western Airlines picked the best !
Wow...never saw this. If this was 1985, Mr. Astaire was nearly 86 at filming and two years away from immortality....a wonderful and stylish coda for both him and Mr. Kelly.
Best commercial ever! :D
For those comparing the more athletic Gene Kelly to the more graceful Fred Astaire, a few observations. I believe someone claimed that only Fred was classically trained. Thank you for posting this! I saw this commercial as a teen, and always remembered Mr. Astaire's cool shoes.
Oh my goodness, that was adorable lol I love it when old timers retain some of their outdated lingo: "fella," "kid," "hoofer."
The two greats of all time they were and are the best dancers ever!!! But Gene is my favorite!! :D
Caitlin Frawley did you see Xanadu from 1980????!!!..Gene starred in it with Olivia Newton-John?????!!!..critics said it was a bomb but I liked it
I agree, Caitlin. Gene had that something extra-sex appeal. Plus, he really was a great choreographer.
You are right...it's sad really when I mention older stars (the greats) as I call them....kids look at me like I have lost my mind. They really do not know what they are missing. Love this advert!
2 legends together
Oh my gosh, I remember this commercial! Love them both!
Class. Nothin' but class.
Even when they were older, they both were so cute!
Two great dancers of movies in a plane.
Two great legendary dancers... wonderful!
"It's the only way to fly"... To me, their dancing was a hundred times more flying! They were amazing.
Legends.
I had never seen this... but this 30 seconds is better than some entire movies...
I used to watch black and white movies when I was a kid and even pretended to be sick and missed the school disco as I was too embarrassed to say an old movie I wanted to watch was on!
love love LOVE Gene and Fred!!!
such charming men. they always have been. i love them :)
...types of actors: hard working everyday types, characters, movers and shakers, legends, and those who leave us too soon...and Fred and Gene were all of the above (and Ginger, too.)
I never knew these two did a commercial together!
Fred Astaire And Gene Kelly👍
When I was little, I thought Fred said "not bad for a hooker on the road."
Haven't seen this in 20+ years. I love RUclips.
A long time ago. He does say hooker on the road. Talking about self-knowledge....
Fred Astaire wearing spats on an airline. Somehow that's just so right.
Actually those aren't spats. They're two-tone tassel loafers. Spats are made of fabric that partially covers the shoe and has buttons on the side. They were popular with formal wear from about 1900-1940.
:DDDDDDDD Thank you, thank you, thank you for this!!!! They were too cute together for words, even when they were older.
...SO COOL!!...and they look the same...just a little bit more grey...
now this is nice
@bmaze94 Yes, I felt tugging on my heartstings when I think about those two and all the wonderful entertainment they gave us! RIP guys you are missed.
Don't need thumbs up or down on a stupid plane these were ICONS what the hell is this person who put this up thinking THE BEST DANCERS OF THAT TIME HOW DARE YOU DEGRADE THEM
my two favorites=)
How precious!
I remember flying by western in the 70'S and 80'S from Mexico city to LA .
the big DC-10 .
Memories..
so cute!!!
I have never seen a movie with Gene Kelly in it. The only movie I saw with Fred Astaire in it is "The Towering Inferno". I have to watch more movies.
Well, that would make me fly Western.
What a contrast, eh, when you think about it... From the 1930's to the 1980's... Worlds apart...
Mind you, with the depression looming, we might be going back to visit the30's. :) I hope Fred and Ginger are there!
wow, it's kind of breaking my heart to seem 'em old. Why do the good die so wonderful!!!!
@lovejenie, God bless you.
@MrFunnyhair Oh how i wish i was alive in the 40s and 50s sometimes to witness that golden age of Hollywood
I'm only 4/5 decades too late though..
This makes me so sad b/c they were so awesome and both are gone now
I love Gene!
Yo this shit just made my day
How charming.
I never knew of this.
I like it that at 0:10 in that shot of their shoes it probably wasn't them but some unknown doubles. That's how movies are made. If you can't see their faces in the shot, especially big stars, it's not them. 😊
Omg this is too too cute!
Poor gene and fred being reduced to plane commercials
its a shame the musical extravaganza era of Hollywood is over
A paycheck is a paycheck.
Who remembers what movie this quote was from?
Horton: “What kind of plane?”
Astaire: “One with wings!”
I know! TOP HAT!!!
Ava Ashmore CONGRATULATIONS! You won a crisp high-five!
@@carltrotter7622 thanks 😊
apples and oranges, both great...
Isn't this a year before Fred passed?
He seems so frail, God love 'im.
Love Love LOVE Fred Astaire!
Kelly aged so gracefully!
Yes you do!
How did I only find this now ... Astaire did some ads too!
Kelly died in 1996, Astaire 1987
Legends.
Sadly, 2 years later both passed.
Fred died 2 years later, Gene, I believe, passed in 1996.
Thomas Leary you are correct and the film “Cats Don’t Dance” is dedicated to him because he did the reference choreography for the film!
maravillosos
@MrRightNow469 the first Gene Kelly movie I would advise you to watch is Singin' in the Rain you will love it!!! :)
Man, how crazy is it that we have to grow old and die? The aging process is so lame. We spend out whole young lives waiting to grow up and one day-we never know precisely which one-but one day the process reverses and we start to decline. I just pray to Christ there’s no Hell.
Great commercial! Do you have the Western commercial with Rodney Dangerfield?
Until they mentioned travelling with style I was thinking "What do dancers have to do with Western Airlines?"
Western Airlines...they were at terminal 5 @ LAX the majority of US airlines were first class!! what happened? well, I don´t see nothing wrong about doing commercials for that was a privilege for the airline to have an unforgetable pair like that!!
Two great men with bad toupees
Muito Bom
bawwww D:
Rudolf Nurveyev for males, mostly because I have a personal preference for ballet (I was a ballet dancer myself).
All righty then :)
would've been nice if they mentioned to each other the babbitt and the bromide. XD
Me deu vontade de dar um abraço no fred
why so cute tho
@jerryaltman with what in their age? walkers?
ever
Yeah, I figured ;)
@hellasexy22 Haha woops, that's true, but they meant something different back then, you know? The use and context changed. Like "kid": here, it's a term of endearment, but now it's more often used as an informal synonym for "child." :) All the same, Gene and Fred were adorable ^_^
ok :) so whos your favorite dancer overall?
mine is fred
@yellowsummerdress
Hello, we still say "fella" (especially in rap lyrics)& "kid", but may be not "hoofer"! But I agree, hella-cute, for real.
Hm, I disagree completely. Fred had classically better technique, but Gene had more character in his dances--flair, if you will. Individually, I've always preferred watching Gene. Fred with Ginger, on the other hand, well, there's yet to be a pairing that has even come close to matching their magic.
You mean ever? Or out of Gene and Fred?
アステアとケリーはどちらへ旅行?
That was really strange...
神様と神様
Gene Kelly can pull of "old" better than Fred Astaire... even though Fred Astaire is ancient compared to Kelly
See, I'd disagree. I suppose technically, Fred was the superior, but I've always enjoyed watching Gene more, at least in solo dances. Gene had more flair in his dancing--he was more of a character dancer, infusing more acting into his dancing.
But of course, that's my opinion.
Plus he was as hot as a three alarm fire.
i disagree, fred outdanced everyone i ever saw, rita hayworth didnt evenhave a chance to compare herself with fred. but thats my opinion, and your opinion is yours, and i respect your opinion :)
