This video is beautiful, he gave it his best for the conditions that he was experiencing at the time, and the audience still gave him a standing ovation, which put a priceless smile on his face, and frankly, mine. :)
I don't think anyone understands that this was the biggest slump of his life. He was an alcoholic during the mid 80s. Listen to his concerts in the late 80s or the documentary during the end of his life and he still retains that monster technique.
It's true, he was on medication and was drinking heavily (Martini's) in those times, though he wasn't a drinker at all in earlier and later years. His wife Wanda left this recital in tears saying "mr. Horowitz will never play again." But he recovered and played quite a few glorious recitals after this. I was lucky enough to hear him in Amsterdam in 1986. Unforgettable.
Thank you very much for posting this. I have read about this concert and had long hoped to be able to hear some of it. It's a fascinating document for Horowitz enthusiasts to compare to his better performances. Clearly it's not his best playing, but I'm reminded of what one writer said about this concert: "Even Horowitz's wrong notes are more interesting than many other pianists' right notes." This makes his later performances even more remarkable in comparison.
I expected a disaster (because of rumours) but actually enjoyed this performance, which the audience did also, as we can see. What he does is surprising and interesting. It feels like music creation in the moment.
To be very sick at the time and still perform is true human strength. I am so glad that he was able to overcome his problems and perform like a different person later on! RIP Horowitz.
I don't know if it has already been mentioned, but Horowitz was 80 years old in this video, plus he was suffering from severe depression and was on antidepressants during this performance. His addiction to alcohol during these years certainly didn't help either (reactions of antidepressants + alcohol are supposed to be horrible). I am surprised that a man his age can even attempt to perform such a demading piece of music like this one and still do it under these conditions.
It must be devastating to have close to perfect technique all your life, and have knife edge reflexes, only to see them dwindle away with age. You are still looking at the greatest pianist. He is allowed to grow old, and suffer human frailties. He certainly used the talent given to him to the utmost. It's amazing in all of this, he still has his sound...even the errors are projected to the back of the hall. My favourite pianist.
He was actually extremely unwell on the Japanese tour in 1983. His medicines for depression etc. were making things impossible for him . After he returned home he came off those medicines and then his real piano ability reterned and he had man good playing ears after this.

Dopo due anni si è ripreso ed ha fatto degli ottimi concerti, veramente un grande pianista e un grande Artista con la A maiuscola!!! Lo adoro!
I'd rather hear the right notes. I've always found some of his interpretations to be utterly thoughtless - Liszt's B Minor Sonata was a mess especially - and his abrupt left hand sforzandi to be indicated of flaws in his technique.
Thank heavens the audience were appreciative and understood Horowitz would probably rather have been at home with his feet up relaxing instead of continually trying to give people real pleasure- which he spectacularly DID !!
Very interesting to see this side to Horowitz performing the a flat polonaise. It's so sad, especially when you compare this with another performance of his polonaise. The other performance on youtube of the heroic is superhuman. It just goes to show how great a man he was to have survived this and continued performing. RIP Horowitz

Music isn't all about hitting the right notes. I don't know the story of Horowitz very well but I do remember hearing that he was very nervous with terrible stage fright and that was a huge factor in his public performances which he occasionally bombed.

Great Horowitz dynamics and phrasing. He was still powerful although was not as what he was. Way better than those mindless standard boring academic Chopin player.
I doubt that anyone loves Horowitz's artistry more than I, but this is hard to listen to. I think he wanted to convey the Polonaise as a dance on the one hand and it's magisterial transformation on the other. Even in his better performances of it a few years later though it still sounds odd to me.

Nearly all great geniuses suffer from self doubt and depression I think it is what makes them so great at what they do and what makes them strive to perfection if there is such a thing.Sviatoslav Richter was the same as well.But it is sad to see him in this state.Any person seeing this video who was told Horowitz was a genius at the piano would say you must be mad. So I urge people to check out some of his earlier output.

Good GRIEF, I had no idea Horowitz ever played anything this badly. It sounds as though he was playing with his fists instead of his fingers. As someone earlier pointed out, the "disaster at 4:03" -- amazingly he managed the left-hand rapid-fire descending octaves flawlessly, even changing key "on schedule" (one of the toughest parts of the piece)-- but the right hand wandered off into an incorrect repeat of the earlier theme. It's obvious this was a brilliant mind inhibited by some problems.
poor maestro - he'd almost destroyed himself with drink, drugs, and sedentary living by this point. this is a valuable document but people must understand it is from his worst concert ever. (and this is some of the better playing - the chopin etudes and the carnaval are horrifying.) the look of self-hatred at the final chord of this piece is heart-breaking. and yet he recovered in a few years and stayed in good shape for the rest of his life!

He died just six years later . It is a shame that such a wonderful pianist should have been reduced to this but just listen to the overall interpratation its still a superb performance in that sense and most people will realise he was a very old man at the time of this recording
I am in the process of learning this song and watching/listening to horowitz play it is like an inspiration, error-filled or not. The maestro is a legend at this instrument and this performance was incredible. He took to it very well like most professional people should do. If he had started crying or absolutely anything along the lines of that I would've probably hated this video. That's something that people like Kissin would do (he's phenominal, but seems to be the very egotistic type).
The whole Japan concert used to be on youtube. But, I guess someone took it away because of all the bad comments it got. I did watch it though. There was also an interview before the concert. Unfortunately, the great maestro was highly medicated and did not practice that much then. Some pieces were really bad, like Chopin's etude No.8 Op.10 ( no control and wrong notes in almost every bar). This piece has many wrong notes (check what happens arounf 4:00). However, no matter what I love Horowitz
Remember that musicians are humans and humans are not perfect, and not always in good shape or ready to give a great concert ! if you can not accept that, don't go to concert and buy cd or ......... do it yourself :-)
its so weird seeing horrowitz make so many errors technical errors at that but hes only human and unless youve heard this piece many times, it doesn't sound that bad. it almost soudns as if he did have a little too much alcohol before he got on stage
Honestly, if he was not in good shape, but got money and other people's efforts to make the show, I would not applaud him. It's a bit too romantic to clap for this kind of performance, because, sincerely, imagine people waiting days or even weeks or months to watch a good performance and here what they got. I mean he didn't make awkward faces, stopped playing or screamed damn it😅 I don't know the piece well and can't tell where a mistake is, even though the performance doesn't mean much to me.. so I guess you shouldn't worry about mistakes most people won't notice anyway and rather keep going and focus more on the music

ダブリングの副作用で、指に影響を与えてしまい、小節や音符を飛ばしたり、ぐらつく演奏をしていました。
奥さんも泣いてしまったそうです。
帰国後、家にこもってしまっていたらしいですが、84年から猛練習をはじめ、85年にラストロマンティックという映像を皮切りに、
ミラノ、パリ、ロシア、東京（本人の要請で実現、圧倒的演奏86年）、ウィーン、ドイツを巡回公演して一気に名誉を巻き返したようです。
それでも当時、まだ珍しかったＮＹ製のスタンウェイの金属音は凄いですね。

It is not his age, it is his medication and condition at this point. He gave a slew of AMAZING recitals after this when he recovered (84-87)!
It almost brought a tear to my eye that a good portion of the audience still gave him a very long, standing, ovation.

とんでもなく高額な入場料を払った多くの人は、自分にバイアスをかけていました。素晴らしい演奏だったと、、吉田秀和のひびの入った骨董と中村紘子のご自分のなさっていることがわかっていないというコメントがなかったら、伝説の名演として伝わったでしょう。当時世界最高の収録技術を持っていたNHKに残された記録は永遠に出てこないでしょうね。でも、この演奏会は全く例外的な演奏会でホロヴィッツが偉大なピアニストでこのあともあり続けました。そこを考えると、この演奏会の記録は闇へ葬るべきものだったのでしょう。

jero13595 he had a lot of problem before this concert. He ate too many madicines and that made his condition worst..it was so tragedy...
@4785689 si anche io sono un grande conoscitore ed estimatore. ricordo benissimo nel libro di schoemberg, credo si chiamasse cosi, dexcriveva bene le vicende legate a quel concerto...io nn avevo mai visto sto concerto ma sono rimasto sconvolto ,quando ho sentito il carnaval quasi ho pianto. mi ha commosso lo studio op 25 n7 di chopin quello l'ha suonato veramente bene.tu di dove sei?
He died just six years later . It is a shame that such a wonderful pianist should have been reduced to this but just listen to the overall interpratation its still a superb performance in that sense and most people will realise he was a very old man at the time of this recording
I am in the process of learning this song and watching/listening to horowitz play it is like an inspiration, error-filled or not. The maestro is a legend at this instrument and this performance was incredible. He took to it very well like most professional people should do. If he had started crying or absolutely anything along the lines of that I would've probably hated this video. That's something that people like Kissin would do (he's phenominal, but seems to be the very egotistic type).

The whole Japan concert used to be on youtube. But, I guess someone took it away because of all the bad comments it got. I did watch it though. There was also an interview before the concert. Unfortunately, the great maestro was highly medicated and did not practice that much then. Some pieces were really bad, like Chopin's etude No.8 Op.10 ( no control and wrong notes in almost every bar). This piece has many wrong notes (check what happens arounf 4:00). However, no matter what I love Horowitz

According to Horowitz's biography I've read, Mr. Horowitz ruined his concert in 1983 because he took too much drugs...
Remember that musicians are humans and humans are not perfect, and not always in good shape or ready to give a great concert ! if you can not accept that, don't go to concert and buy cd or ......... do it yourself :-)

Honestly, if he was not in good shape, but got money and other people's efforts to make the show, I would not applaud him. It's a bit too romantic to clap for this kind of performance, because, sincerely, imagine people waiting days or even weeks or months to watch a good performance and here what they got. I bet if this video was the same thing with some asian pianist, the downvote bar would hit 90%/
If you turn the sound off, it's a lot better. No, seriously, I love watching pianists' hands without the music. He looks like he's seducing the keys.
The only pianist I liked better with the Heroic Polonaise was Earl Wild.

There must have been something wrong he is going slow, fast, hands all in the air. Where theres piano he plays forte. Not a Horowitz performance.
I mean he didn't make awkward faces, stopped playing or screamed damn it😅 I don't know the piece well and can't tell where a mistake is, even though the performance doesn't mean much to me.. so I guess you shouldn't worry about mistakes most people won't notice anyway and rather keep going and focus more on the music
Honestly, if you listen other (olders) recordings of this polonaise performed by Horowitz, he plays so much better, close to perfectly.
It is natural for a musician to have a bad period of performing...Besides mrH. has proven that he is the best...I read that he was on meds and alcohol.....

cant agree with titi116 - this is still a pleasureable experience...and any kind of enforcement to hear callas is perhaps the worst experience I could ever imagine...i couldnt imagine anything to rival it...not even several mouth ulcers!!!

I can't believe how some of you who probably can't even play this piece bashed this virtuoso on the internet. How many of you can play your OWN version of polonaise when you're drugged at an old age? Try play it better than him, then come back and say how "bad" his playing was again.
OH - MY - GOD. Horowitz normally is very good at playing but I play the Chopin's Heroic Polonaise much better of THIS Horowitz.

Why didn’t he cancel? He was very money-hungry his whole life. (Older opera singers give performances the equivalent of this all the time and fans don’t mind in the least.)

He should have cancelled the concert rather than play so poorly. That’s what the great ones do. This is a very sad spectacle indeed.

despite the fact i don't like much his chopin intepretations he was great pianist and hard man.
