Vijay Prashad to Prof. David Harvey: You live on the other side of Imperialism!

- This is an extract from • The Anti-Capitalist Ch...
It contains three short speeches by Viyay Prashad, a Marxist historian and director of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research.
These form a devastating critique of renowned Marxist David Harvey’s insistence that the concept of imperialism is not relevant to understand today’s world.
While the world is divided between a small handful of rich nations and a large majority of poor ones, Professor Harvey, finds it “too easy” to describe the contemporary world system using the term “imperialism”. In this 2013 book Seventeen Contradictions and the End of Capitalism Harvey did not rank imperialism even among capitalism’s top seventeen contradictions.
This is an edited extract:
If you had a choice to be born in China or in India, where would you pick? Unless you were born in the Ambani or Adani family - if you were born in a slum in India or in a working-class family in China, where would you choose? It's easy for people in the United States to have this or that criticism of China but you don't understand what it means to be born in a country that had been colonized and lived with a wretched old culture, you just don't get it guys. You live on the other side of imperialism!
I'm going to talk about what I didn't see in the book. There are three things:
How do we understand the fact the US spends more on its military than any country on the planet and more than the next nine or ten countries? How are we to understand the hybrid war the United States prosecutes against Cuba, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Syria?
Why it is that certain countries can't or shouldn't be allowed to move from labour intensive production to capital intensive production? What are extra economic pressures to be called other than imperialism? China is not asking the United States to stop doing capital intensive production so China in that sense is not being imperialist against the United States. There are no Chinese warships off the coast of New York City the last time I looked. There's plenty of U.S warships and now one unfortunate bedraggled British warship. It's like the opium war on acid! I don't understand what the British are doing - they have a country that's falling apart and yet they've decided they've got to go poke the Chinese.
It is important to have the concept imperialism appear in the text. I wonder how it would appear if not grounded in the material structure of this prevention of the shift from labour intensive production to capital intensive production.
The Leninist consideration is important. It's very interesting that in all the texts on Western Marxism, Lenin gets skipped. If you look at Perry Anderson's considerable survey of Western Marxism, Lenin doesn't figure. You know he jumps from the second international thinkers over them to Gramsci and or to Karl Koch or to [some] of the more significant French figures. They skip Lenin and I think that's significant.
Ho Chi Minh doesn't skip Lenin. Lenin is in fact the beginning for them. Lenin is the beginning because what Lenin says is if you come from a colonized part of the world the productive forces will not be developed for you there. Imperialism will not develop the productive forces therefore you have to have a dual agenda which Marx didn't think about. That's why Gramsci celebrated the Soviet revolution as a revolt against capital, the book Capital in fact. This is a revolt against the book we need to take that seriously.
You know we shouldn't duck that what Lenin argued in the thesis to the Comintern 1920 which Ho Chi Minh reads in l’humanite and says ‘my god the sun came out in the sky for me, [I've] never read anything like this’! What that Leninist breakthrough suggests is that you've got to push an anti-colonial national liberation strategy simultaneously with the socialist revolution; simultaneously with the social revolution land reform and so on. You've got to move there and we have to build the productive forces because we can't wait for a thousand years. Anyway, imperialism is never going to allow us to build the productive forces so we've got to have this breakthrough consideration of that Leninist moment.
I think this helps us understand so much of what Marxism does outside north Atlantic states and that's another area of consideration. If we neglect Lenin we neglect that seam of Marxism developed outside the North Atlantic. Even Walden Bello in his intro to the Verso edition of Ho Chi Minh says he's not a theorist. I take great objection to this view that theorists are only in the academy in the West whereas Ho Chi Minh or Mao are not theorists. Read them carefully, you will find a theory. Isn't that what Gramsci said? Elaborate theory out of practice. That's the obligation of the new intellectual. So, the second set of considerations is where is Lenin in our thinking? Where is this Leninist moment which is very important for 90 percent of the Marxists in the world if not more?
Communism was the ideology that helped defeat imperialism. From Vietnam to South Africa to Cuba etc……. So why are we surprised Imperialist and colonists hates communists .
💯
Communism has the best track record of defeating Imperialism and Fascism. Nothing even comes close.
@@johnl9361 Of course, some -people- 🐷🐷🐷 like fascism and imperialism.

Thanks for recommending this, Eddie!
Hi Eddie
Keep up the good works mr marx man
Vijay needs to be heard in the American left circles, whatever is left of it.
This is the first time I’ve heard him. I think this was one of the best speeches I’ve ever heard

He is very quotable! We were trying to decide which title to use for the video and we decided to use a direct quote... as we listened, we kept coming up with good candidates until Vijay then exclaims "you live on the other side of imperialism!" and we knew we had our winner :)
We’re waiting to hear Vijay’s analysis on the recent developments in Afghanistan. Vijay is no joke.
Let us all unite as humans and fight against evil imperialistic capitalists.
As a chilean, I completely agree
he should be Indian leader instead of Modi the fascist
Vijay Prashad is probably one of the most outspoken and courageous man on peace and harmonious work for humanity today. He studied history, reviewed and analyzed carefully the development on how Western imperialism has benefitted in everyway by bullying and enslaving others across the globe by imposing evil and inhuman activities to dominant weak nations till this very day. He has pointed out the truth on many occasions. He is in fact the most suitable candidate for Nobel prize for peace and not those politically manipulated fake winners we have seen. Conglat and my highest salutation to you Vijay for the very great work you have done for humanity.
Goddamn Vijay is so inspiring. Any Canadian comrades here please go join the communist party of Canada

Vijay is a treasure
Vijay wants, so much, for the Western working class and Western intellectuals to understand the effect of imperialism on other parts of the world, and how wealth has been transferred from those countries TO the West. Michael Parenti understands it, better than most, and attempts to make people see that poverty is not a "natural condition," as Liberals and other Westerners like to imply. Wealth and poverty are not isolated conditions, independent of one another, with no causal relationship between the two. Indeed, wealth creates poverty ... under the current system. Only when we can put an end to the capitalist mode of production will this relationship change.
Without the evil West, there would be no basis for modernisation at all in the East
You hate the West, yet you want nothing more than the modern industrial system created by the Western working class
Vijay Prashad is just brilliant, a real intellectual heavy-weight! And best of all, he never mince his words.
Mr Vijay is an Honest, wise and very Brilliant man, like Mr. Kishore Mahbubani. They should be the President n Prime Minister of India.

This will be a valuable resource to return to. Esp his discussion of labour vs capital intensive production.
This is why we like his comments so much. We have written several articles that go into this in depth, one that talks about the need for anti-imperialism to be central (red-ant.org/2021/01/21/why-anti-imperialism-must-be-central-for-the-left-in-imperialist-australia-and-divided-world/), and an entire series that explores this within the context of China (red-ant.org/2021/04/25/is-china-an-imperialist-country-introduction-to-a-new-four-part-series/)

Althusser did actually agree that Marx changed his thinking numerous times, but the bifurcation of young Marx / old Marx refers to a structural shift in his thinking not simply just a change in his thinking or better elucidating a point or issue.

The #1 issue for socialism is how to break away from needing "capital." Theoretically, socialism seeks to be as autarkic as possible. To the degree that socialism needs outside resources, it must "pay" for those resources in U.S. dollars. This is imperialism in a nutshell. It was the British pound in the 19th century, and it's been the dollar ever since. The first step in breaking imperialism is to break the monopoly and the commodification of money.
True there is no Chinese warships in US coast, the veil is dropping hehe hehehe.
There's just chinese capital taking over within the country
@@yungyahweh Oh no, the imperialized country has set about establishing extremely tight, interconnected economic interdependencies within the imperial core and now that acts as literal insurance to prevent empire from going to war with China like last time.

The idea that ideas have their roots in material conditions, Marx's materialism, must therefore also be rooted in material conditions, so how does one validate such an idea?
If people do not understand where value comes from, because they are alienated, and instead fetishize commodities, how is it that Marx understood where value came from? Lest we forget, if ideas originate in socio-economic conditions, and are just excess steam without potential, where do Marx's ideas come from?
If we are to take Marx's philosophy seriously that ideas has its origin in socio-economic conditions, we must conclude that Marx's ideas are rooted in his conditions as well. Therefore, I am tempted to believe that he was depressed that society didn't pay his bills, so he rationalized an excuse to not work, i.e., his goal was to live off surplus-value, something he succeeds in when Friedrich Engels finances his ramblings.

Vijay, do you agree that East Germany missed the opportunity to promote a modern development of their country.
When socialist countries don't create "modern development," that is the fault of imperialism, not socialism. It's sanctions, embargoes, military expansion, interference, war, etc. West Germany was funded by the US funded by the imperialists and received help to grow. The west was protected in the war, and the east was left to fend for itself. East Germany didn't miss the opportunity for modern development, it wasn't allowed to develop. If East Germany left its socialist roots and joined the West, all of Germany probably wouldn't have received the same level of funding it got.

Lots of good points on inclusive development as China has phenomenally done. But, it leaves out the Elephant in the room - ecological catastrophe. That is a big part of systemic exclusion pushing people into poverty and starvation. Capitalism and communism are hand in glove to push ecologically degrading industrialization - more tractors and combine harvesters, power guzzling machines, transportation and refrigeration systems.
the 1800s called, they want their Malthusianism back
@@uexkeru How about responding to someone's points rather than make some baseless hyperbolic claim?
It's true that the poverty alleviation of China has had serious ecological consequences that stem not from necessity but from a desire to compete in the global marketplace. If they took a communist approach to poverty alleviation they wouldn't rely so heavily on carbon based energy production and attempt much earlier to move towards renewable sources. China has only recently moved towards that path in order to be able to corner the market on renewable technology. Capitalism dominates in China and I have no faith in Xi Jinping.
@@Liliquan Why stoop to having to point out facts like that China's not a communist state and tractors aren't what's destroying the planet? It just leads to a relentless tit for tat that never ends
So shale fracking and releasing gas into the atmosphere by millions of tons, destroying the water is your definition of eco friendly. Being down by a country drowning in obesity. You need to get real buddy. Cleanse your heart, don't live with hatred
"[i]mperialism even among capitalism’s top seventeen contradictions" Imperialism is not a contradiction of capitalism; it is a stage of capitalism. It's not even structured as a contradiction here. For it to be a contradiction you would need to have it oppose something else. But on its own how can it be a contradiction? THat doesn't make sense.
Very good talk..However as an Indian I disagree with Vijay Parshad on the comparison of poor people in India and China and china's so called achievement of lifting millions of people out of poverty.. china's communist party is extremely secretive and doesn't allow any media from abroad to investigate and cross check these claims..so one has to believe their government version which is propaganda..while poverty is definitely not a convenient form of life however lack of freedom and human rights where the government can abuse people like objects is much worse than living a life of poverty..I being from India have seen millions of people in pathetic poverty..however I find that despite their hardships and living challenges they are happy and able to smile which many people in rich and advanced western nations of US and Europe are unable to (a lot of gun violence and mental illness exists especially in usa)..so poverty is only one of the parameters of decent living and freedom is an equally if not more important parameter which cannot be ignored..

I would argue the free market lifted those people out of poverty instead of the CCP.
And I don't believe for a second people are willing to give up their freedom for so called affluence.
Even though critics in China aren't tolerated by the CCP there are many people complaining about
the party since economic growth is stifling.
The economical policy of China is a disaster. They are still a poor country with a lot of poor people
yet they invest in ridiculously large infrastructure projects without a shred of evidence it will break even.
While large governmental companies only get bigger and bigger small business owners have to pay
45% of their income in taxes.
The "free market" magically ended poverty in China, but hasn't managed the same feat literally anywhere else on earth in over two centuries? Lol
Wait so by the same token if free market is taxing small business that is bad right? So free market bad? Idk but for me it’s pretty easy the US is at war with how many countries vs China..
China doesn't really has an free market per say. there is a lot of planing of the economy going on.
"And I don't believe for a second people are willing to give up their freedom for so called affluence. "
not for affluence per say but most people are willing to give up their freedom for stable life. We kinda already do that.
"Even though critics in China aren't tolerated by the CCP"
I don't think this is the case.
"They are still a poor country with a lot of poor people"
Making sure 1 billion people doesn't suffer from poverty is a hard job. The ccp seemingly doing better than most countries.
"without a shred of evidence it will break even"
I don't think they are supposed to break even.
Why didn't it lift them out of India? Or Congo? Or anywhere else where it doesn't work?
