  • This video I build my own LED trailer module for my discovery 3. If you tow with your disco 3 and notice the indicators pulsing when using LED trailer lights then this is the solution for you. All up my cost come in just under $100 for all the bits I had to purchase. There's several options out there that you can purchase if you don't have the skill to build, but they are not cheap.
    LED modules that I know of in the market (all are over $200):
    www.linearelec...
    www.labtronx.c...
    www.redarc.com...
    smartlogicelec...
    triumphroversp...
    Comment below if you know of another other modules and I'll add links for everyone.
    If you enjoyed this video and would like to see more then please give me a thumbs up, leave a comment and consider subscribing so you don't miss a new upload. You don't have to do all three (or any if you don't want) but it really helps grow the channel

    Shane, wanted to pick your brain on a problem I have with Tow wiring on my LR3. I bought a OEM LR harness, plugged it into the car, and activated the tow electronics with my GAP Tool.
    Hooked up my camper (LED tail lights) and neither the brake or indicators on the trailer work. I have tested them with 12v fed directly to trailer socket to confirm they actually do work. Also rented a box trailer with LED tail lights and had the same problem.
    In the USA, trailer wiring groups right indicator and right brake into one wire, and left indicator and left brake into one wire in the harness.
    Because the LR3/Disco checks indicator resistance for trailer presence, and both indicator and brake lines are combined, my thinking is the car doesn't see a trailer and therefore doesn't output a signal to brake or indicator lines on the tow plug.
    Next test will be to run a test light with an incandescent bulb on the indicator circuit and see if I get the trailer logo on the dash display and output to the test light from the tow socket.
    I'm thinking of building the box in your video, but want to be sure if this will cure my problem.

      Defiantly test your output from the vehicle with the test light, also there are towing light fuses in the LH rear compartment so might be worth making sure that are all good as well. I'm not really sure on the USA specific wiring and if that is potentially messing things up also - not something I'm totally familiar with to give you an answer off the top of my head

      @Shanes_Shed Thanks Shane! I'll check the fuses and run the test light to see what I get.

      @@Shanes_Shed I bought mine, didn't really research what was inside pritty simple little unit

    Might have to do this. Had the same unit with a plug each end but looks like it died.

      Wouldn’t be such an issue if one could easily replace components inside them.

    Hi Shane, I am planning to do this to my 2012 Discovery 4. Curious as to why relays are necessary. I have seen ballast resistors simply installed across the LEDs inside the rear tail lamps on PowerfulUK channel. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

      Yeah the D4 is different when it comes to the trailer lights - it will detect the resistor once and shut down the pulsing, where as the D3 continually pulses so they need different methods to get the end result. D4 can also get away with one resistor on one indicator circuit.

    Hey just looking to build of these, what sort of switch did you use please?

    • @Shanes_Shed
      @Shanes_Shed  10 месяцев назад

      For the way I wired it, you'll need an on/on toggle switch. www.narva.com.au/products/60066BL/on-on-heavy-duty-toggle-switch

    Awesome mate, does this then just get installed in series to the left and right indicator circuits in the disco before the trailer plug?
    I'm guessing theres nothing stopping me from putting a plug on either end to just go in series between the trailer and disco, without the switch, as long as the other circuits are continuous?
    Cheers for the help

      Hi, yes you are correct. My original module (the failed one) had trailer plugs on either end when I first got my disco (the unit came with the car). For a while I had it cable tied to the draw bar on my camper, but I eventually installed it into the disco with a switch to turn it on and off. I've got an installation video ready to go which will be up on the 18th
      Glad the video has been of some help

    Hi Shane,
    Do you need the relays in the system if it was made into a plug adaptor only? I just changed trailer lights over to LED and have the pulse issue and was just going to make an adaptor with resistors but just trying to understand if the relays are for turning the unit on/off only or if they have any other importance as the original one you had have the relays aswell...

    • @Shanes_Shed
      @Shanes_Shed  2 года назад +1

      Hi Joey, thanks for the question. In a D3 you need the relays, D4 can use just the resisters. In a D3 if you just put a resister inline then the LED lights will still flash. The resister and relay setup allows that brief pulse to go to earth and the car sees the resistance as if it where a bulb, but then when you use the indicators the current can go through the relay and to the trailer LEDs.
