Squarebody engine oil cooler line replacement
Had a decent oil leak from one of my engine oil cooler lines on my 454 BBC Squarebody Chev Suburban. Nice easy fix due to access to factory parts still being available - need to be ordered from the states but rockauto does a great job of getting parts sent out to Australia quickly.
Only a small handful of tools where required - mainly a 13/16" and 7/8" open end spanners and 13mm spanners. I did cut down an old 7/8 to be a little shorter which fits more easily in the area around the fittings at the filter.

    • @Shanes_Shed
      @Shanes_Shed 2 часа назад

      If your only working on one side at a time and just have that one side jacked up then you can get away without dropping the oil. If both sides are jacked up equally then you may lose a little bit of oil

    Don't forget your post gas setting to cool the Tungsten down after done with weld and hold it there until its done blowing about 7 seconds.

    • @Shanes_Shed
      @Shanes_Shed 5 дней назад

      Didn't quite have 7 seconds post gas - from memory I had 3 or 4 seconds set. But it takes a bit of thought to remember to hold it there all the time - I've mainly used stick welding in the past so theres alot more going on that I need to be thinking of all the time.

    I learned how to tig aluminum the old school way with pure tungsten. I was recently having issues trying to weld aluminum with a new machine. Apparently the new technology in todays machines doesn't allow the use of pure tungsten anymore. If you have an inverter type machine you should be using ceriated tungsten.

    • @Shanes_Shed

      I was using Zirconiated tungsten (white) tig tungsten

  • @makingmistakeswithgreg
    @makingmistakeswithgreg 7 дней назад

    Aluminum is quite the fun material to weld. When everything goes well it’s fun, when things go bad it’s frustrating to say the least lol. I have a couple tips for aluminum, hope they help: You want to keep a slightly longer arc gap than steel, aluminum will jump to the tungsten otherwise. Settings wise (unsure on what you can adjust) you want to be at 60 to 200hz (higher narrows the bead and lessens penetration) a/c balance around 70-75% EN (25-30% EP or cleaning). Make sure to prep the material super clean and wipe it with acetone to clean the oils off. Beyond that aluminum likes a lot of heat at first, medium heat in the middle of the bead, and no heat at the end. Use the foot pedal a lot to achieve that. You will get the hang of it in no time, keep up the practice 👍. Good catch on the leaky gas hose. Edit: I almost forgot, always fill in craters at the end of welds or they will crack. Often times they crack before the weld cools. Aluminum is hot short sensitive, so you want to avoid heating it super hot and letting it cool fast (aka molten weld pool to solid metal). Try to ease on/off the heat.

      Thanks for the tips, greatly appreciated as it’s quite different to welding I’ve done in the past.

    I had an “oil production” issue in my wife’s 2011 Honda CR-V K24 engine (not Direct Injection). Fuel dilution was at nearly 5% using GC method. Replaced all injectors with new Honda original and no change. After several ~3K oil changes with Valvoline Restore & Protect, I am below 2% on the last 5K oil change. The data tells me it is working.

      Seems 10-40 oils are becoming a bit yesterdays news. Except for Classic Cars and motorcycles.. Wish we could get it here in 10-40 I'd like to try it out in a few different motorcycles Can't use the 30 weight oils cause they are considered energy conserving wet clutch issues crop up with those oil ratings.

      xW-40 oil is one of the more popular grades here in Australia so we wouldn't class them as yesterdays news. But yeah you'd defiantly need an oil thats compatible with wet clutches in bikes

    Thanks Shane for the excellent and detailed video. I just noticed today when changing front brake pads on my 2010 ZH Outlander, the inner CV boots have torn on both sides with grease escaping. The car has done 400K kms and not having any issues with the outer CV joints (no noise) so thinking of following your procedure to change the inner boots but on both sides. Looks pretty straight forward on the drivers side as you’ve shown. Is it the same on the passenger side? Wondering if there’s a snap ring to lock in the axle on the other side. I’ve got the manual gearbox. Hope you can help with some advice. Thanks again. Clear and easy to follow video. Craig

    • @Shanes_Shed
      @Shanes_Shed 16 дней назад

      Similar on the other side, just doesn’t have the outer bearing to remove. It should have a snap ring to lock the cv in place. I normally use a brass drift to tap on the inner cv and drive it out

      @craigkennedy5328 16 дней назад

      Thanks Shane. I’ll compare the manual gearbox layout with your video but I reckon it’ll be similar to the auto. Thanks for info on the other side. Seems manageable at my end. I’ll research some more, order the boots and seals and get it done. Happy to shout you a beer anytime. I’m semi retired and do Adventure Motorcycling. So no doubt will pass wherever you are in Australia someday. Thanks again. Only just discovered your channel so I’ll explore your other videos. Kind regards, Craig.

    • @craigkennedy5328

      Hi Shane. I decided on the expensive option and install new L and R axles. I just wanted to ask if the R axle and extension with bearing can be easily split or do I have to find a new extension with bearing piece. I’m thinking there’s a snap ring holding the extension and R axles together. In your video, you didn’t have to do this. But the new part will come with the CV axle minus the extension/ bearing. So I’ll have to seperate and fit the extension to the new axle. Thinking of riding through the centre next year to the Kimberly’s and heading south to Perth and across the Nullarbor. So will keep you in mind for that beer! Yes, Blue Mountains is still pretty nice place to live and raise the kids. Sydney is too busy for my liking. Craig

      Yeah gas-less mig is kinda horrible. I can stick weld, but I don’t do it often enough to be any good at it, it’s one of those skill that takes me a while to get back into it. But Ali is tough as it dissipates the heat so quickly.

    Hi Shane, I took out air pipe between turbo and where air box pipe mates to it but cannot get it back in. (not replacing aircon compressor). Was too hasty removing it and should have taken more notice. Respect your ability - any advice please?

      That one’s a nightmare, I’ve never actually fully removed it as I could never be bothered getting the right angle to pull it. I’ve previously just loosened it and moved it into a position where it was out of the way enough to get the job done. I’m not going to be much help apart from holding your tongue exactly right🤪

    Do you know if the launch can disable the EGR system if you want to delete it ?

      No it can’t as that would require a patch to be flashed to the ECU. Gap tool for that task I’m afraid

      You did ok! I had to put a bit of effort into the editing - storytelling is not normal for my channel so its a little different to my normal style.
