I returned an Autotrail in 2021, motorhome damp, letting in water and it was new.
It was unfit for purpose, the good thing for us is we had finance on the vehicle and because of that Lloyds finance took the case over and we got a full refund. There’s no reason why you should not get a full refund, it’s painful now but it will resolve itself. Legally they don’t have a leg to stand on

    I bought a caravan from Grantham's £35k worth 2 years ago.
All was very good until the brakes failed. Being a twin axle large van this was a big issue. They tried to charge me £2k for repairs (6 weeks old van) saying I had been driving with the parking brake on!!! (Obviously I 100% hadn't).
I stood my ground and strangely they backed down the next day. But I wouldn't go back there for anything now. And moved my servicing to a different swift dealer. Shocking company!

Hi there so sorry to hear of your woes. I was treated similarly by the company that sold my new motorhome to me. The first year they did the habitation and warranty testing. According to them perfect. The second year whilst on a tour I had an independent inspection. The damp issues were huge. The supplier treated me as you are being treated. However after a few months of denial I told them my solicitor was dealing with the problems and that the inspector I’d used aas going to be my witness when it goes to court.
The main importer suddenly contacted me and collected the motorhome replaced rear , roof and nearside panels; which must of cost thousands. The supplier had their tech manager sacked and even today some 12 yrs later I’m still the proud owner and have enjoyed numerous tours practically trouble free.
The stress that’s caused from this obnoxious practice is dreadful so I really hope you have a positive result and many wonderful tours lay ahead. I’ve subscribed so hopefully you’ll up date us soon . Best wishes.

Just watched the end of the video - is that plastic ABS pipe running below the van? That will last 5 mins out on the road without any protection! Also, the hot and cold pipes are exposed too! If they don't get damaged, they will freeze. I think returning it is by far the best solution.

I had the same problem with Swindon caravans, I bought a new 2018 Swift caravan, it flooded on the first day we used it because the waste from the sink wasn't connected plus 13 other faults, We asked for our money back and they refused because the van wasn't fit for purpose, they didn't care.Best of luck

You have my total sympathy....I bought a camper-van in 2019 from Motorhome Depot, based in Mansfield, Notts but I had to travel to Leeds to see and purchase it. They 'pressured' me from the very beginning and did everything t they could to get the sale. Three months later the gearbox in the Peugoet I bought basically blew up, this was 5 hours before I was due to cross the channel to go to France in it. The company washed their hands of the problem, even when I discovered the seller had a had a 'bodge' repair job done on the van prior to sale through Motorhome. The company I discovered had colluded with the seller. The repairer told me he wouldn't give a guarantee on the gearbox because he knew it wouldn't last! The repair cost me £1.750 and the Company I later learned had had a vast amount of dis-satisfied customers for much the same reasons as myself. Avoid this company at all costs, if they are still trading!

We bought a new car and within days the alarm would randomly go off and sometimes the car would even unlock itself. Car went straight back into service and they said there wasn't a fault because they couldn't find it! Then they said they fixed the fault, but I was still getting alarm notifications on my phone app. We notified them within the 30 days but they were being pretty obstructive and didn't want to settle. Luckily for us when we had our test drive and were walking back to the showroom with the Salesman the alarm sounded and I remembered the Salesman looking surprised but he assured us it was nothing. However this proved the fault existed before the car was purchased and they couldn't dispute this. We eventually got our money back, minus a small fee. Like you it was very stressfull time. It's easy to be wise after the event, but it pays to check everything. Good luck and stand your ground. . .

Sorry to hear your bad luck with the van. We purchased a New Bailey in Jan this year. We have had 2 x 10 day trips and it has been back to the dealer twice for issues with the rear floor and has to go back again for a delaminated kitchen worktop when the part becomes available. We had a pipe in the bathroom come loose spraying water everywhere in the cupboard under the sink (lucky we were in the van at the time) Ok simple fix by me to fix that . We are booked up for the rest of the year with 24 weeks booked but not sure if the caravan will take it. One good thing for us is our dealer is very good .
Good luck and hope it works right for you.

You do not have to explain anything to them you do not even have to return the vehicle, just tell them when and where to pick it up and you want a full refund , I had similar with a firm near Lancaster ,they will try and fob you off until you run out of the 30 day return law

The reputation of a dealer is more often than not on the basis of how they deal with an issue. These faults can unfortunately occur within even the best organisation and quality control, but it's how these issues are dealt with which is important. It sounds as though this company has not shown you any respect or empathy and is clearly focused on the bottom line rather than having a satisfied customer. Fortunately, you appear to have all the evidence you need to reject the vehicle and have a full refund. A good piece of advice I had received was always take some level of finance on big purchases like this as it does give you another avenue to use to get the finance company involved. Good luck to you both and I sincerely hope you get things sorted to your satisfaction.

Just watched your vlog via the big telly. We feel your pain. We have been given the runaround not as bad though, sorry to mention that. Our cablight had a crack in it and a slight leak so asked the dealer to order a replacement under the warranty and it turns out they never submitted a claim. Then they went bankrupt and reformed under a new director, so a year on and I have involved Citizen's Advice etc. Not sure if there is much that can be done. We hope you get to return your campervan and hope you find a replacement very soon. Just subscribed so we can follow you on your, hopefully, happy travels and journey. All the best, Gary and Julie.

Using your channel, reporting to the Caravan and Camping club etc should apply more pressure. Stay as calm as you can and back these cowboys into a corner!
We are new to motorhoming and bought a 2009 Autotrail from TMD Motorhomes in Redditch in September last year. It wasn't cheap, but everything we have reported to them - it is an older vehicle, they have repaired without question and the service has been fantastic.

First Motorhome took back before warranty expired to get light and aerial fixed was asked if I still wanted the other items due from the PDI, as in they sold me the vehicle and didn't mention the outstanding items. Got the lot done was told the trial was fixed, it wasn't. Phoned them to be told they never work! Whilst dropping it off mentioned that I was going to sell it, they offered me 55k. I sold it for 70k. Replacement camper van different dealer, not much of a handover. Phoned them and said it felt under powered for a 180BHP engine and discovered I'd been sent completely the wrong specification for this van, an agreement was made that I could use it until the new one arrived. When it eventually did they tried to charge me the difference the sales guy had left and nothing was in writing, we ended in a stalemate and they gave me my money back which was fair enough. Third van another dealer, was told the original owner didn't get on with the pop top it was a six Month old van. Waited six weeks for collection they are that busy! On the way home a motorist flagged me down on the motorway pointing to the roof lifting, phoned them and was told to call the warranty team in the morning. Yes you got that, me chase them! luckily the warranty guy called didn't leave direct contact details, they collected a week later and I didn't hear anything for a few days so I exercised my rights under the 30 day rule. Fourth van, kinked hose to shower never heard back, mirror fell off mounts and broke in shower enclosure ongoing. Other warranty I sorted myself directly with manufacturers. I run a business and the service at these dealers is absolutely shocking, anyone can take your money but the guys that look after you well when things go wrong are where you should shop in the future.

Sounds like a fairly common response from a dealer.
Our van had a leaking roof light,we were advised by the dealer that the "10 year ingress warranty" is void, the reason being that we didn't have the habitation check done at the dealership.
I don't trust any if them, they're only any good when your giving them money.

My second annual habitation check was carried out by a registered independent inspector and he found a huge amount of damp in a motorhome just two years old. It took the threat of solicitors and that the inspector was prepared to make statements plus appear in court if required. The main importer for my vehicle was quickly contacted and remedial work was performed. Stressful and as you mentioned they take your money then abandon you.

Golden rule if you gonna spend more than £20k on a van then you get a full hab check done by an approved service engineer who is a member of the caravan club. Will cost you about £140 but will point out any defects that the dealer should fix and save you a load of stress and heartache.

Absolutely shocked at the standard of care you have NOT received, but very pleased that you are no longer the owners of that mess!!
We are just buying our fifth motorhome, the fourth from MDG Motorhomes near Ringwood in Hampshire and Poole in Dorset.
They are a wonderful company to deal with, go out of their way to make sure customers are happy who will of course return to them when changing their van at a later date.
They have just again won " 2024 Practical Motorhome Gold Award owner satisfaction award with 97.2 % of customers happy, won many times before!!
It might seem a long way to travel but the cost of fuel, plus a night in a hotel is nothing to the stress you have just gone through.
I have no connection with the company apart from as a regular customer but mention them because I would like to see others as curteously treated as we have been.
Good Luck and Happy travels for the future!!

I had a similar situation a few years back, but with a car so I'd imagine a lot less money involved. It taught me one good lesson and that is to trust my instincts. I'd seen the car in photos with scenery in the background but when I arrived the 'Showroom' was basically a shed in a farm yard. The car was covered in muck which the guy said was because he had taken it for a spin that morning to make sure everything was ok. It hadn't rained in a couple of weeks, so he obviously just couldn't be bothered cleaning it. Bought the car and within days discovered serious issues. It was a bit of a faff getting my money back, but a legal letter did the trick. Since then I've lived by the maxim " If it don't smell right, steer clear. Easy to say with hindsight I know, but if you feel like something is off as soon as you arrive at a business, then turn around.

I've been looking at some sort of mobile holiday vehicle solution for many months now and heard of several unfortunate experiences. Your video is very well structured and presented. It's informative and you stayed clear of any polemical streams of anger.
Now I've heard of your experience and those of other contributors in the comments, I've decided to follow the choice described in one of the comments. Had we purchased on finance the finance company would have dealt with them. Best of look with your encounters

Because of these build quality issues by all manufacturers and poor dealership customer care we've decided to not invest £70-75,000. We are now travelling around the country in our electric car staying at Haven campsites, bed and breakfasts, travelodge and Premier inns. We booked a quick 7 day holiday to Spain half board and all flights and transfers via TUI in January for £532. We think this is a far better way to spend our savings and not have all the associated hassle and expense of owning a motorhome/campervan. I was looking for a follow up video and I hope that the hand back was successful with a full refund.

We've just put down a holding deposit with Granthams (Grantham) on a new ex-demo caravan that we love, however we had the same first impressions as you did with the layout and presentation of the site. The caravans are stored very closely together with limited access and this one had gained quite some green build-up from storage. The compacted caravans make it difficult to clean whilst being stored and not great for display purposes, we were re-assured that the van would be cleaned and PDI'd before collection. Just come across your vlog and starting to feel that my initial instinct could be right! :-(

Dreadful story but no surprise, we purchased a new Coachman caravan ten years ago, two years later the washroom sink began to break up, Coachman refused any help stating my fault, lesson learned there.
I can understand you purchasing with your heart and emotion, keeping a cool head is not always easy, but the sorry state it was in, irrespective of being ex display, no second key and no documentation would for me have set alarm bells ringing. Personally I wouldn't have handed any money over until all missing docs and keys were accounted for. Easy to say I suppose, I truly hope it all works out as I have considered an Autotrail. Best of luck mate.

Bummer. That's defo not right. Requiring them to fix it is obviously fair enough.
We just bought a new van last week (well 6-yr old van, new conversion). As you say it's a lot of money. Everything has been fine so far, so I'm currently happy to recommend 'Voyager Camper Conversions" in Ruabon, Wales (if you want a Vivaro/Trafic/Primastar). But who knows what we'll find over the next few weeks. Obviously we've not any significant problems (yet) so who knows, but I got the strong impression that were decent, no frills, people who would do you a fair deal. As opposed to 'salesmen' types with a fancy showroom and suits. Don't think I got any special paperwork about the gas mind - it never occurred to me that I needed any. It's got a gas locker and a shutoff value (2 on the pipework, so 4 in total!) so that looks fine to me.

We have had water pump ticking problems but now never leave the pumps switched on when not using taps. The system is a pressurised and the slightest leak becomes major until tank is empty and then pump burns out. Quite a common fault. Hope you get it sorted. It's not your fault that it has happened but with a motorised liesure vehicle or caravan moving, vibration inevitably can cause push fit pipes to come undone. For that reason, we never leave our caravan with the pump on, when we leave it unattended and always shut it off as we go to bed. That way, if a leak ever occurs, we are there to stop it straight away, before it causes major damage. Just recently our pump was not working properly on camp site arrival, we found the inlet push fitting leaking air into the inlet side of the pump on a push fitting and it had been perfectly o.k. the outing before, therefore the pipe coming loose must have been caused by motion vibration. I always check suspect points throughout the van, where I can get to for leaks and expect the pump to immediately stop after the pipework has initially pressurised, if it doesn't there is a leak or a pump problem.

I feel your pain. I was beginning to think it was just us that’s had a bad experience with this company.
The PDI is non existent in our experience as our brand new caravan had so many issues. Including a gap in the main habitation door that you could see daylight through.
We try to keep our channel as positive as possible but I do think people need to know about bad experiences to help them to not make the same mistakes as we did.
We have ongoing issues from when we first had the van that has been back to be rectified several times but still have issues. The cost of taking it back and forth and the personal free time it takes as well is just extraordinary!
We’ve dealt with at least 2 aftersales people over the last year which have tried to help as best they can. It seems there’s a big turnover of staff possibly.
As I say you are not on your own unfortunately.
Have a look back at my videos from around this time last year.

Problem with campervans and motor homes is that hey are built really bad. Tacked and screwed together by idiots with no pride. I had a Swift Kontiki. 23 k miles. roof liner coming down, taps leaking, door hinges broke, paint work coming off, swift logo coming off , roof leaking. i had to start re screwing panels, doors and quite a few other things back together. The engine turbo pipe blew off on the motorway, the throttle body sized up. The rust underneath the van was really bad. Imported it to New Zealand and it failed on all the passenger seat belts. cost me $20k to fix. The NZ land transport nearly failed it, from were it would have been scrap
