Polymer Clay Kaleidoscope Cane - Covering a Goose Egg

- This is a video where I show you how I make canes in Polymer Clay, and use them to completely cover a Goose Egg, giving it a Kaleidoscoped pattern. In this video I give you tips on how to change your finished cane if you are not happy with it - as I wasn't! This is not a step by step tutorial, but is a fast forwarded video of the process. You can slow the video down if you wish, by clicking on the 3 little dots at the top right of the screen. I hope you like this one, and that it gives you lots of ideas for making new canes.

It’s amazing how a few additional elements completely changed the cane. I never thought about adding elements to just a portion of the cane too. I love your videos! They are always so soothing to watch.

I have been working with clay for Bout a year and I love it... Your work is amazing . when I find myself with a need for a fancy cane i spend hours on end watching you work the clay. I find that sculpty is to soft for me I like kato the best tho I have arthritis in my hands it's super hard to condition with a pasta machine. Anyways I just wanted you to know how amazing and how if it were not for your cane videos I probley would not be as far as I am with polymer. It's a great medium. Oh n I also love your oils. Wow I found your page and spent 2 hours reading and looking at all your art... I live to paint as well. I'm self taught watercolorist

Well I just LOVED IT Fiona.!!! My Ostrich egg should be arriving today and my goose eggs next week. I’m making each one of my daughters one as a Christmas gift. Ok so I made ALL 6 canes and I loved what you did with the extra canes. But I had to take photos of them and figure out on my own how you made them...LOL!! Because those 3 are what added to the beauty of this covered goose egg. So ALL 9 canes (incl the 3 extra that almost look like yours🤗) are made and now on to making my blue and white blends. Looks like you make a couple that you rolled up with the white in the middle and cut into fours. I saw one that you constantinad and it looks like you may have made a fourth one. I’m going to follow it pretty much like you did - amazing what you can see and accomplish at .25% slowness...LOL!! Then the next 3 for my daughters will be from the many many canes I have been making over the months. I love making canes. I do make some jewelry pieces and I’ve made 3 trinket boxes and I’ve loved doing it all..!! I will take pictures as I go along. I’m not sure I did it right on the orangey one but I did a blend of mandarin orange, a strip of lemon yellow and a strip of white and a small triangle of plum and I put them together cut into fours and squished them like you taught me and then I added the middle wrapped log and put it all back together. Almost looks like yours but it’s not but I’m hoping for the same effect after I put it on the original cane. I’m so glad I made extra of the wrapped log that you used in several of the canes because that one was easy to put together. The second of the 3 I had to think about. So I did a blend of raspberry and white and rolled it with the white in the middle and I squished them down as per usual but I cut the roll into thirds instead of quarters and I turned one upside down and then into a triangle and then partially wrapped it according to the picture. I’m just hoping for a pretty cane🤞 You have taught me so many wonderful techniques and I thank you. Got my ostrich egg yesterday and it’s HUGE...!!😂 But I will cover it with scrap clay to get it ready. I’m going to use aluminum foil to make a bed for it to bake on with a smooth sheet at the bottom so the tin foil does not mark my scrap clay. I will probably lightly sand it before I start adding my cane pieces. One thing you didn’t tell us was how you decided on the size of your triangle cane for the goose egg. Did you measure the circumference and then divide it so you could make it all the way around...?? Like we did on the trinket boxes?? Well I love this project and now that all my filler canes are made - I can start putting it together. First I make your mistake (well not mistake - just not as pretty as the final one) - then I add the extra lovelies❣️Thank you again Fiona. Would love to take a class or two from you someday❣️❣️
@@susanchamblee2549 Sounds like you have everything planned perfectly and sorted :) Yes. measure the circumference of your egg, and divide by 8. Then make sure your slices are slightly larger, as they stick proud of the egg so the top of the slice will be at a slightly larger circumference. I cant wait to see what you do. I am envious of your Ostrich egg, have always wanted to do one. May need to go and hunt one down now :)

Thanks Marion, I am currently working on sorting out a platform where I can do more complex cane type videos, sadly I would need to charge for these as I do have to make a living from my clay, I am sure you understand. But I will also continue to make my free videos, and will swap between the two, so watch this space. The egg looks beautiful, I loved the first cane you made an thought how lovely it would be as a pendent with earring to match when all the canes are put togather with that pink it really makes a difference, as pink purple and lilac are my favouret colors, I covered hens eggs before but nothing as beautiful as this, I just twisted different colors of polymer ropes and spirel ed them around.🌹🌺🍁🍂🌷

Oh my goodness! That piece is stunning! What is the biggest object you have ever covered in clay?
Thanks Cynthia :) Now there's a question! I have done a couple of elephants, but they are only about twice the size of the egg. I create dragons which are probably my biggest , but they are covered using individual slices of canes as scales, so a slightly different technique. My biggest I suppose is my fish bowl, as that has a smooth inside, using this sort of technique, and a textured underside :) Photos are on my website or Facebook page ;)

Hi my name is Marta and I`'am from Argentina and make Faberge eggs imiyayion with natural xperiment egg shells. Now I'm trying to experiment with polymer clay. Please my question is if the egg must be empty or filled and if I have to cover the holes fbefore heating in the oven. Thank you so much. Your work is quite perfect
Thank you Marta. The eggs are hollow, blown as we call them, and yes, they have holes where the insides were 'blown' out. When you cover them with clay, you still need to leave a tiny air hole so the air can escape when you bake it, have fun :)
Wow! Exquisite results! I'm always fascinated when I see someone wrangle a huge cane like that. Do you have expectations to use that whole thing?
I usually use it on other things, so I never do the same thing with the same pattern twice. I will also sometimes sell cane lengths for others to use. . And of course, I only used a portion of the original cane with the extra canes I made, so I have about 3 times as much left. I can add different new canes in and get a completely different look for each piece - Oh the joy of Polymer Clay :)
It occurred to me at about 3 am this morning that you could cover boxes and bottles with some of the remainder. Rearranging the slices would give you different patterns and adding canes with other colored canes would give you endless possibilities. I'm new to caning, so I need to expand my thinking on how to use them. Thank you for sharing your inspiration and talent.

Thanks Aisha, yes working with the clay definitely helps keep the arthritis at bay, thank you. The egg I bought, pre-blown (as in empty), then I covered it with a layer of scrap clay, then baked it, then I covered it with the patterned clay, and baked again. I hope that answers what you needed to know? :)

@@jacrispy1009 I actually bake it resting on some gently curving card which sits in the bottom of a rounded bowl. The bowl supports the egg shape, and the card stops the egg going shiny where otherwise the clay would touch the bowl. I hope that helps? :)

I love all the canes!!! When you added the light blue, I was like Why? 😢 However, you pulled it off with the additional canes. I love your vids and your voice is calming with that awesome accent, he, he. Such great creativity! I have emu, goose and ostrich eggs that I wanted to carve into, however, it has not panned out, hope the eggs remain hard. Something I hadn’t seen others do is the tiny holes you placed on the thin sheet of clay you used as foundation. Does it completely prevent bubbles? I covered chicken eggs when I first started and they came out pretty good. My favorite cane was the first one, it looks like a beautiful tree, I am going to make it, hope it comes out good.
Thanks Monica :) The original idea, which as I say, I hadn't really planned out, was that the light blue would look like a sky coloured background for the canes, but it just didn't work out, but that's why I love Polymer Clay ;)
the holes, sorry I forgot to say, yes, I add holes in the under layer before baking it to make sure I don't get any big air pockets :)

Sometimes I do a rough drawing first, but with this one, as I say, I honestly was making it up as I went along :)

How do you prevent bubbles from forming under the layers? I pin pricked the first base layer...and bubbles still formed. Then my top design layer also had bubbles even though I used liquid sculpey adhesive. I'd love any advice you could share, so I don't waste another intricate cane with mistakes. 💓
That is so frustrating for you :( I guess it is mainly (and sadly) a case of practice, using your fingers to gently press the clay flat against the surface and moving in a direction towards an uncut edge. I know that is stating the obvious, and probably is something you are already doing, so apologies for that, but I can't think of another way of putting it. If you leave the clay in situ for a little while, it often becomes more obvious where bubbles are, particularly if you gently rub your fingers or a roller over the surface later. Then they can be popped and laid flat. It sounds as though you are doing everything right so there is very little else I can say, other than with each one your techniques will improve until you have no bubbles at all. I hope your next one comes out perfect :)

I gotta know - where do you get the goose eggs, and how do you prepare them so they're not too fragile to work with?
I buy pre-blown goose eggs from eBay - there will be other places you can get them from too - the eggshells are nice and thick, so are relatively easy to handle, and I simply add a base layer of scrap clay first, bake then add the design :) (remember to leave an air hole ;)

🙀love it, I got lucky a few weeks ago and managed to get hold of unfertilised Emu eggs that the local Op shop gets sometimes they are from the Emu farm where they incubate the eggs rather than let Daddy Emu sit on them to ensure a bigger hatching rate. Yep I said Daddy Emu 😹😹😹 the female of the bird lays the eggs and runs off as fast and as far away as she can living the male to look after the eggs and keep an eye on them and then when hatched bring them up.
I managed to get 4 eggs all ranging in size and Dad and I will be turning them into a little boxes the largest is about 10 inches in height and 2/3rds that round the smallest is around 7 inches high and again about 2/3rds that around so they are nice and big 😹😹
I liked the idea of covering one with the clay but will try and keep the laminate down to about 1.5 mm thick as the eggs are heavy as they are and don’t want to make them too heavy 😳😹 they are heavy as they are but very strong as well, I am hoping to,one day get out to the Emu farm one day to see if I can get some of the eggs that have been broken when the babies have broken out of the shall it would be nice to see if the pieces were big enough to use with the clay and make them whole again so,they too can be turned into boxes.

Monica Ortiz I have not started on them yet due to the fact we have had so much heat this summer the clay even the Kate clay went all mushy so have been waiting for winter to set in and thus the clay will behave when making canes 😹🤗 but will do some photos once I have them made
Fiona Abel-Smith PolyOriginals I have been wanting Emu eggs for years and could not believe my luck when I saw them in the local Op shop 😹😹 I could not afford to spend the money but nor was I going to miss out on them so raided my piggy bank 😹😹😹 yep even at 54 I still keep my piggy bank saving all my lose change 😹 it has saved me many a time when things have been extra tight in the past 🤗🤗

It depends on the clay Aoife. As you know I do have arthritis in my hands, and I do have to be careful. As this one was FIMO Soft, it wasn't too bad. I have a worse time with the Kato ones, and then I sometimes have to rest half way through. I also know that, as with this one to a certain extent, I am going to have pain afterwards, but hey, the Polymer is worth it ;)

Could you explain how you prepared your goose egg?
Hi Belinda, thank you so much for your comments. The pre-blown goose egg was purchased online. I then covered it with a thin layer of 'scrap' polymer clay to make sure it was okay during the baking process, and also to make the hole through which the egg is blown, smaller. If it is of any help, I cover a plastic bauble with scrap clay in my latest video, 'Spiral Baubles' so you can follow the same technique to cover something like an egg, before you add the decorative layer :) ruclips.net/video/T1B7doVKGJM/видео.html

Hi Heather, I think the person I originally got mine from no longer has them :( But I just searched for pre-blown goose eggs on eBay, and that is how I found them originally. There will probably be other suppliers near you too, so have a hunt around, and find the ones that are the right price and location for you :)
Yeah but what if they don't fit? How do you measure? I get confused because it's being cut up into sections and put back together .
It's a case of measuring and getting the cane slices to the right size ;) I do a paid for tutorial which shows how to cover a round christmas ornament shape, and the principle is exactly the same. But as many people have bought that one, and paid money to see how it is worked out, I can't of course show the same for free here, as that wouldn't be fair to them - I hope you understand? :)

Your videos literally sparked back the artist in me and now I want to try my hand in some different approaches. My wife paints and I stopped art and somehow got into plants... And now epigentics/genetics/mutagenics etc. I dabble in nuclear and particle physics and what is most astounding is I believe you are showing "super strings" and "Membrane" theory. Basically our lives are 3d cross sections in 5d reality etc. From birth to death you are a long form with many patterns and transformations between beginning and end. Our whole reality may very well be a rolling of sorts and twisting, then wrapping and being pushed inside out etc. It's complicated to explain, but what you do would clear so much confusion if people curious about dimensional "packing" or stacking, would watch these videos and apply what you are doing as if it's the very hands of god creating worlds and lives... so intense. Also Fiona - is there an item to soften fimo soft clay?? All my small packages have been wonderful so I bought a LB package of fimo soft white and it just crumbles like cheese. I have watched your conditioning video and this will drive me nuts!! I have used the Sculpey softener on my beautiful Windsor blue and it totally trashed 2 brand new packages so I had no choice but to throw them out💔. They were almost a watery paste that was never going to dry out enough to use as clay!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much 🥰
Normally, with any other colour I would suggest adding a bit of soft white clay, a little at a time to some of the crumbly clay and let the soft clay work on the crumbly one. But of course with the FIMO white, any other colour you add to it will change the colour completely. Presumably it's the Mix Quick you are saying didn't work on the Windsor Blue? The other option is to warm the clay slightly, wrapped up, in a pocket, or if you have one of these heat pads/wheat bags that will not cook the clay, but just heat it up, that can sometimes work with really crumbly clay. Sadly it is just a question of elbow grease and perseverance when it is really crumbly. As I do in the video, put a bit through a thin setting then gradually get that working, then add other bits in. If it is already warmed slightly, this will aid in that too. Lastly, I feel you frustration, we have all been there, sometimes a block is just crumbly!! :)

No, not at all, it is quite a thick mix, so you dob a bit on, then spread it around 😉🙃🙂
No with the eggs I normally rest them on rounded card inside an oven proof bowl :)

You can slow it down with the settings button, and then go to the playback speed settings. It is always difficult to get the balance right between showing all that I do, and not making the video too long. Thank you for your feedback.
