  • Here’s our review for the paid version but it also covers the free version of Asphalt 9: Legends on the Nintendo Switch. Gameloft certainly have the experience but can they back it up with a solid NIntendo Switch port? Let’s find out!

Hi guys - this review is for the PAID version that was available prior to launch. I might sound like i dislike the free to play model quite a bit...uhhmmm but I’ve tried to give a fair an accurate representation here. Let me know what you think of this one and check out GRID which is definitely a full featured racer without any extra...coins. GRid Review is here - ruclips.net/video/gsN_udHM-YI/видео.html . Thanks for watching as always we read EVERY comment. Patreons I’ll be announcing the winner by FRIDAY at the latest! Mark

Nice objective review, keep up the good work!
I really dislike ingame purchases with real money in general and especially in console games. If this would cost 10 € and asked me to unlock the vehicles by playing the game a reasonable amount of time, I would be sold. Basically like all older racers before the internet conquered consoles. But this model just screams 'we prey on the weak to be too impatient not to spend real money' which is shady as shit. Having to refuel? Oh boy...

  • @bigdgaff
    @bigdgaff 5 лет назад +43

I wouldn't really call it a paid version. It seems more like one of the standard introductory packs offered at the start of an F2P to get you invested in the microtransactions just bolted to the front of the game. I don't like pay to skip mechanics in general because they are the "solution" to a grinding problem that was deliberately engineered into the game in the first place. I'm tired of F2P store-fronts with incidental gameplay attached after being stung in the past for hundreds of pounds and will be sticking with real games from now on.

I recall deleting Asphalt from my mobile/tablet because of all the free to play stuff you mentioned. The racing itself is good but all the junk outside of that is a huge turn off. I just want to choose a car, choose a track and have a race.

    • @samuelisaza2695

That’s the same problem I have with Asphalt, I played a LOT of Asphalt 8 in the past and although I love the gameplay, not even after playing daily for almost 2 years I was able to get an A class car, and in this games is even harder to get cars thanks to the blueprints and the fuel system . The game is excellent and the graphics are beautiful but the free to play stuff makes it an unbearable game! If Gameloft rereleased this game at 60 dollars but removing all this awful free to play stuff, it would be an ideal game but you know, business be business.

Gameplay tips from a mobile veteran: all nitro above yellow ignores the slowdown of dirt or grass, nitro level affects also turn radius and it hugely affects air speed. Pressing brake in the air can save you from dying by half turn roll, but sometimes doing nothing is better. Also killing car from the rear makes you a lot slower, avoid where possible. Useless drift will lose a lot of speed so only use for big turns to shockwave out

I think anyone interested should get it and use it as something nice and casual to play in between other games. Flick onto it, do a few races to pass a little time and then onto the next thing. Treat it like that and you'll get a plentiful experience out of it for free. Just consider what you are getting for free when you really think about the game and visuals. So don't be so upbeat about them trying to get their money off you.

As a fully f2p player of this game I can provide some small insight. I haven't run into too much grinding, you can progress throughout at least the first chapter of the campaign without pretty much any grinding. Both types of currency are relatively easy to earn too. Your progress does slow down as your cars get higher upgrade levels but besides that it's great. Fully agree with the 16/20 rating

The only thing I dont like about this game is how little is available in offline mode, but the fact they included it at all is amazing.
Also they actually make the free to play part not bad, each car has it's own fuel, they could have lumped them all together under one fuel system, the way they did it though you can just switch cars and keep playing. As well as the fact that everything can be earned through actually playing the game. I've played this game for a long time on mobile and have to disagree, they never make you buy anything, and there really isn't a slog to earn stuff, you just have to play the events and the career, and the career is really easy to 100% with only racing each race once or twice.

Great review, Mark! This looks like a solid port. I d/l the f2p version on my iPad when it first came out and while the game itself is fun, the constant monetization makes playing a real chore. I'm almost scared to play it? and have to focus and pay extra attention ~(more than the race itself) in case I accidentally click on a purchase of some sort. Would have much preferred an all in 1 time price version.

the switch version of A9 does feel abit cleaner in terms of ads but the artificial barriers created to put you on the edge of spending real money as well as to limit the speed with which you progress are frustrating at times. you can grind progress bit by bit. my advice is dont rush yourself else you will be very frustrated just enjoy A9 for what it is, its just a game at the end of the day for most of us normal folk who are not Esports gamers with some high stakes on the line. nonetheless the core game itself is on point asphalt 9 is great on the switch. if only it was a full game like horizon chase turbo with out the caveats of F2P. i do give it a recommendation

As a "simracer" i don't have problems with arcade racers. I have a problem with the 360 slide though. I have no clue how that makes the game better and it looks so Fanta that it holds me off to even try this game.

  • @hagenhallgard8619

The game is pretty nice, it basically meets all i wanted from a racing game, pure arcade, boost system, the chance to choose in single player how many laps i want to do, yes this is possible, i got it set 4 laps and a race lasted even 7 minutes, this was fantastic, i was afraid i could only race for 30 seconds or one minute, not at all. The only nay here is about the system progression, it's really hard to get new cars unless you want to spend lot of money, i was intentioned to spend 20 euros and purchase the basic beginner pack but i'm afraid this would not sort any effect in my progression.

Honestly despite what people say, I don't think Asphalt 9 is as bad as people say it is. The Pay to win concept hasn't really affected me, since I only used two dollars on this game, and I progressed a lot through the game without having to pay more than that. Grinding can be tedious, especially with the fuel system, but the reward is worth it in the end. That will help you get through a lot in this game which I really like. And also, getting In-game currency isnt that hard when there are thousands of events going on, giving you hundreds of tokens and thousands of credits, especially with daily events helping you get a ton of blueprints. Overall, I don't really see a problem with this game. The fuel system doesn't really bother me because im not playing 24/7 either way, so I think its an amazing game, and I think the game has the right to put micro transactions here and there, especially since this game looks beautiful, and its free, and you shouldn't really expect no paid content on free games.

As much as I'd love a Burnout experience on Switch, I have a personal "No freemium" rule, so I'll be passing on this one - I'd much prefer they'd remaster the old Burnout games.
PS: Mark, you mentioned "the old Burnout games [...] from back on PlayStation" - the first two were also released on GameCube, which is where I remember them from! They were great games and also great showcases for the RenderWare engine.

While the fuel mechanic is a bit annoying, it makes you use all your other cars. In fact the amount of times I had to switch cars is quite great and honestly, I've gotten quite far as while there ARE a lot of paid content there are also loads of free events to get new cars. I'm not saying this review is false, I just found this game way too fun.

Agree with every point raised in this review. Got it on mobile and loved the look and arcade feel but some races were too short and I absolutely detest the nickle and dime scheme. I had to abandon it after realizing I'd need to spend money to progress fairly. And it isn't like you'd pay a one-time fee. The game really tries to milk every dime out of you

Thanks for the review! I’m not going to download this or Mario Kart Tour because I’m against micro transactions, gotcha mechanics, and gambling in video games. Many Casinos offer free chips to start and a lunch buffet for senior tour groups. This is the same business model but targeting a younger audience. I’m protesting with my wallet, and not even adding to their download numbers.

I mean the in game currency is really easy to earn and I like that when you play multiplayer matches it actually gives you a chance to open a pack of car cards it kind of gives you something to strive for while playing online matches.
My literal only complaint is that I hate that this game isn’t generous as much as a free to play Consol game should be there’s like only two cars you could unlock and a possible third car and that’s it that’s literally all the three cars I always see online and I really hate that not to mention that in past games like asphalt eight you could unlock decals that would make your car look so freaking cool with crazy designs and stuff
But in asphalt 9 you barely have any cool looking decals just a bunch of different colors which I like but if anything I would like there to be more generosity with opening packs because as of right now I’m already going kind of stale of how unexpressive and different you can be compared to online people when it comes to cars in the decals on your car etc etc.

I appreciate this game for what it is... But, I'm quick to remember the days that these full fledged mobile games sold for about $7 on app stores, and had no micro-transactions Asphalt 6 was a great example of an Asphalt game done right! I don't recall a single micro-transaction in there, and I was much more happy to pay my 8$ to any Gameloft game out there.
No option to just pay a single fee for this game to remove all of the micro-transactions and time limiters from this game makes it hard for me to feel engaged or feel like this is worth playing. At least not when gems like GRID Autosport are on the switch now. Thanks for the review guys, I almost got the paid version thinking I would be good to go for the rest of the game!

A great game overall but MT are way too aggressive. A paid fully unlocked version would definitely hook me, or knowing that MT's cap around $100, but this has the potential to dig way too deep into our pockets. To end on a more positive note, I really appreciate the split screen multiplayer, kudos.

I would rather pay 30 bucks 🦌 for grid auto sport. I mean its free... if your looking for a solid racing game, I would recommend grid. I will still try out this game just because its free. If it would cost 1 cent I would not bother. Im not hating on the game or calling It poorly executed or anything, But if im looking for a good racing game then I would probably not get hooked on this. The fuel recharge and F2P completely kills this game for me.

this would make a perfect local multiplayer experience if it wasn’t bogged down with the god awful RNG/pay to win progression system. If you’re not willing to put in the time and money you and your friends would be stuck with the Lancer being the only car you can choose which can get real boring real quick. If they replaced the blueprint system for unlocking the car with purchasing them with in game credits like asphalt 8 or unlock them through in game tasks like any other racing game ever it would make for a much better experience overall
