Neoand12 No, Payback's lootbox are completely optional and innesesary to buy, you can play perfect without them. Please, first play the game and talk about. In Asphalt is different.
thebahooplamaster the switch has garbage battery life. IPhone charges while playing it, so it's fine. A low graphics potato mode might be nice though for preserving life a little longer.
they used to be around $10 on mobile up till asphalt 6 however since then they have moved to the free to play mindset however they did try to release a paid asphalt game around 2 years ago asphalt nitro though had very little success due to it being exclusively available on there web store at the time so after 3 months with no updates they decided to re-release it as a free too play game later the same year, so unfortunately i dont think they are going to go back to the pay to play method any time soon
would you pay a couple of quater for the full but short experience, or get dragged constantly with microtransaction in front of you knowing you're missing out a lot? genuine question, because i'd prefer Daytona USA any day
I played the old Asphalt games (mainly Asphalt: Urban GT, Asphalt: Urban GT2, Asphalt 3: Street Rules) on regular cellphones roughly 10-15 years ago, and the sad thing is that they were way more impressive in terms of gameplay than this microtransaction-filled piece of shit. Just to talk about one thing: even in those very early mobile games it was possible to properly customize cars visually - you know, use different kinds of body kits and spoilers on them as well as apply different types of vinyl to them. Mobile "gaming" is dead now. The times before smartphones were the golden age of mobile gaming because everyone tried to compensate the lack of the mobiles' general power by coming up with different creative solutions and ideas and this leaded to countless of unique and amazing games. It was the second era of NES/SNES basically, there were so many amazing games on those phones. Nowadays almost all mobile games are simply about trying to hit the lowest common denominator by making some kind of gambling simulator in order to keep players hooked and steal as much money as possible from them.
Koncz Dávid I agree. So long as we are restricting mobile games to phones. The switch and 3DS are at least mechanically exciting and good value for the money, even though on a technical level thier power has allowed for easier development and less creative work arounds needed. And free to play is luckily most unviable on such platforms, because in most cases its an inferior experience with poor pacing, and all the players know it.
Oh my gosh, never thought will get such a technical review of a mobile game. Congrats for taking such a task when most gamers looking down upon mobile games
Mike Está Aqui it’s not about the screen, I myself really like touch screens and adjusted to it.. and many people did too.. But a lot of the games themselves on Mobile are just a quick money-grab.. mobile developers are greedy af :/ All they want is money, they don’t care if you enjoy the game or not.. just give em more money.
Mlordy it's weird isn't it, in speed tests and everyday usage Note 8 is faster but when it comes to gaming iPhone wins. I guess it's easy for developers to optimise games for just 3 different iPhones
MDL Channel yeah, the problem is that not many people check the settings. And by not checking they don't see other control options. Giving them bad impressions
I haven't played 9, but 8 had fairly good gameplay. The driving feels pretty good (it's not wheel obviously, but it's fine). The takedowns are fun, the track design is pretty good. It's arcadey when there aren't very many anymore, and it does it better than most. I don't expect Three Fields to do better (granted, they'll have a smaller budget) when they put out dangerous driving, despite creating burnout.
Cyrribrae The driving in general is good and all but the steering for few cars is "so good" that the car just starts skidding in a way that its sudden death and you cant do anything about it. The feel of speed is nonexistent: with Dodge Dart you can barely overtake npc cars that for some reason go in 200km/h and some cars have faster 200km/h than others. The speed buildup is so instant that it makes tracks like Azure Coast incredibly boring. The takedowns are just stupid: you scratch the opponent's car slightly while using nitro and they freaking explode? The cars have weight that you can feel that could have made the takedowns feel better, but they decided to completely ignore that and make every car explode on touch no matter the weight and sturdiness. Multiplayer makes it even worse by making you face people with formulas that RKO you at start of the race. (im pretty sure its the same in A9) I wouldn't call the track design good, because the tracks have obvious shortcuts (if you dont take them, you are stupid) and there arent many of the tracks (they could have just made more tracks in one location rather than just reverse).
It looks a bit better than a 360 game but it doesn't look anywhere near as good as an xbox one or ps4 game should, the cars look good but the texture filtering is terrible
what mobile games do in my experience in the graphical side of things is they put as much stuff in the places youre looking at and the stuff that isnt directly visible is completely shit csr racing 2 has this that the models of the cars are insanely detailed but the background environments are nothing more than ps2 era
On Android you can root and edit the game configuration file to enable 60fps, and it's relatively easy to reach 60fps on 1-2 years old phones given if it's not thermal throttled
use any root file explorer and navigate to root /data/data/com.gameloft.android.ANMP.GloftA9HM/files/, open the GameOptions_saved.json with any text editor, find render_renderPeriod and change it accordingly. You can actually modify the entire file and the game would simply ignore the ingame settings and use that config instead. I made some kind of medium preset that run wonderfully on an sd820 device at 60fps with all the visual effect intact
Quy Nguyen holy shit bro. Damn I gotta show this to those iPhone X pesants. The game never lags but still share your preset! Maybe with Google drive or something. Also, does this work for asphalt 8 as well? Again thanks!
This is actually legitimately cool to know, so thanks for telling us. That said, while the option being available in game might be a good thing, it will MURDER your battery life.
Asphalt 8 is much better, but both games need up to 144hz refresh rate support, uncapped fps, and dynamic resolution support for maximum fps and lowest latency.
The only thing mobile gaming needs it's more companies willing to jump to full priced games instead of always f2p, the game i most play right know it's Baldur's Gate II in my phone and grid autosport has sold very well for a full priced game too, and i have a pc with a 1050 ti and a ps4 and a bunch of other consoles, retro included, but the convenience of a smartphone for playing it's outstanding, from pubg to a crpg to emulators of all kind (at least on Android). I will love to see a comparison in performance between the top gaming phones in a digital foundry fashion!
Kronixio yes both, 1 and 2, Icewind Dale, Planescape Torment and Kotor too, Baldur's Gate 2 has been recently updated and know it plays great on smartphone, I played Kotor years ago on my lg g4 and i enjoyed a lot, very good port too, but demanding on gpu, my lg g4 was lagging o lot with that game even in low settings, but in most modern ones should run fine. Look for that ones in the google play store or app store on ios.
This isn't a developer issue, it's a market issue. iPhone owners buy games with a cost, but even a cost of $6 makes a game sell like absolute trash on Android. Free to play games can average more than $6 spent on a per player basis with ease, so it just makes far more sense to go free to play with content buy. It's what the market demands. I realize that hearing that 'the market demands free to play/pay to win' might trigger some. But it's the reality of the numbers. As much as people like to scream at the wailing wall, those same people then pay more money for free to play/pay to win games than they do for cost to enter games. So that is where the market will continue to go.
I don't know whether piracy or limited revenue (or maybe a bit of both) killed premium mobile gaming, but we've reached a point where satisfying experiences on Android/iOS devices are simply not happening anymore. It doesn't help that the average normie is way easier to sucker in with the promise of "free" gaming and that platform-holders themselves jumped on the bandwagon when they saw the revenue from F2P games. Even ROCKSTAR eventually gave up on premium experiences (while the GTA games sold millions on mobile), just so you know had things really are. The only way we'll ever see mobile gaming return to form is if microtransactions become government-regulated under the same laws as gambling, and even if that's happening, it ain't happening very soon.
The GPU in the Snapdragon 845 (and even the 835 actually) is much more powerful/efficient than Apple's custom GPU solution in the latest iPhones, the issues with the android handsets is purely down to Android's terrible 3D API, which could be the fault of openGL, hopefully Vulkan fixes those issues.
Liam Nah it's not... Try GFX bench or 3D mark... Or Geekbench GPU test all of them show A11 being either 5% slower or 5% faster than Adreno 630. Antutu? Yep... That's the worst benchmark for GPU testing as it shows A10X being worse than A11 while clearly the other 3 benchmarks show its at minimum 50% faster.. it's shown in Grid Autosport and Madout 2 that A10x crushes A11. Vulkan might put SD845 side by side in performance with A11. But let's not go that far and say SD835 outperforms it cuz it doesn't... A10 outperforms SD835 let alone A11. Even in Pubg where you can use Vulkan but SD835 won't be as smooth as A11 but more comparable to A10. Plus.. A11 always has that extra power on the CPU side to 1up SD845.
I do remember paying 7€ for copy of Asphalt 4 on n-gage 2.0. Frame rate was abysmal on Nokia 5320, but the graphics. Nowdays it seems like if you put up your game on sale for 7€ you are just laughed at and nobody buys it.
I haven't looked at mobile games for years, last I saw an asphalt game was about a decade ago. Gotta say it looks impressive. I still don't give a shit about mobile games though.
same, when i just want to waste some time i usually browse the internet or watch some tv series on my phone, its already hard to play games on touchscreen and intensive games drains my battery like crazy.
I play asphalt 8 to waste time on my laptop or phone as I often spend time in hotels for work (I'd play better games but often crappy hotel internet kinda makes that a non starter), 9 looks better but the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired for me. I know a lot of people like it though so I guess GL got something right. And its also always online which kinda sucks though with all the cheaters I guess I understand why.
Its funny how the main people that complain about mobile games are actual Console Peasants . Yall have no credibility the nerve of yall im a PC Master Race Gamer mainly and Mobile gamer second Consoles are on their way to extinction
I tried mobile gaming a couple years ago back on an iPhone 6. While there were some nice titles like Lara Croft Go and Monument Valley, there was simply too much shovelware. Combine that with battery life draining way too quickly, touch controls adapted to a game that needs a controller, and microtransactions up the ass, I stopped playing mobile games. I tried it with an open mind and it just confirms my beliefs that a dedicated handheld device like a 3DS, vita, or now the switch, is the way to go. There’s simply too many sacrifices that need to be made for a mobile device. The varying specs, battery life, the mobile market dominated by microtransactions because the average consumer on mobile doesn’t want to pay for games. It’s a shame too because there are some good mobile games, reminiscent of the era where the DS saw a lot of unique games based around touch controls, but it’s just not common enough for me to sift through loads of garbage
Strange... I heard in this techical rewiew that the game is comparable to a game on current gen console... I'm quite sure the last time i saw that kind of shaders applied on shadows was on late last, last generation game, in late 2004.
Thibaut Mahringer Yea and be banbarded with microtransactions. Sorry, Rather pay something that have more value to me. A DFGT and a first gen PS3 with Enthusia pro racing is all I need. Also Asphalt have not been good after 6.
Jawan Meizu Alchemia Story ? There is micro transactions but they only give you cheated weapons. Which are totally unnecessary to beat the game. So it's good like this.
Jawan Meizu Oh no, i don't care about Asphalt 9, especially because of the excessive micro-transactions. It's sad that such a beautiful mobile game does almost force you to spend money.
Nice tech analysis this one! Hope to see more of high-end mobile gaming on DF! Also, I've noticed the Ridge Racer Type 4 music on the background, a nice touch, because when I've played Asphalt 8 it gave me a big nostalgia for arcade racers like the Namco series, San Franciso Rush and Cruisin' - so here we go having arcade fun while Namco doesn't give us a new and true Ridge Racer...
That game's visuals would not at all be at home on PS4 or Xbone. Largely due to the resolution and texture quality that don't scale up well even to a monitor, much less a large TV. That said it *is* better looking than a lot of games you'd see on 360 or PS3... so maybe Wii U or Switch level?
This kida blew me away and moving from my moto g7 power to redmi note 8 pro the leap in visuals was noticeable! ALso the Ridge Racer Type 4 ost in this video made me smile!!
If I have a choice between the same game on a smartphone or a PC/game console I think 99% of the time, most people will obvious choose the PC/console instead of a smartphone.
PiCABLESKY yeah but those are mostly casual games. One of the few games I play with friends is pubg mobile because most don't have a gaming pc like I do and everyone has a good android phone.
PiCABLESKY No matter what you say it doesn't change the fact that the mobile game player base is on games like candycrush and shit similar to that. The amount of people playing console quality (not just graphics but gameplay and complexity) are a very small group and can't be compared to the player numbers on pc/console.
PiCABLESKY yeah but most gamers hate this fact and that's why they are so hostile towards mobile gaming. They don't understand that money leads the way for an industry.
Aaron Smith yeah they are shitty candy crush but earn more than many big AAA games. Clash of clans alone earned 1.2 billion last year AND THAT IS A "FREE GAME". EA by comparison earned less than a billion in profits in 2017.
burnout paradise came out in 2008 on ps3/xbox 360 and it looks better then any mobile racing game its locked 60 fps open world its 2018 and mobile gaming still sucks
wow thats insane! who would have thought a console that is 100x the size of a phone and with a physical would be able to have better graphics and better controls than a mobile game! but thats not even true because this game has better graphics than the original burnout paradise. remastered is a different story, but thats a 2018 game
Asphalt, Ridge Racer and Real Racing do offer some pretty good racing overall. The levels, options and car detail do in fact, rival some console games.
Well, FEH is really good and not P2W at all. Yes, you have the whales who runs a Zelgius+10 with BF, but you can win fights with better strategy. I think FEH is the most generous gatcha game out there, it is Mobile Game done right.
All this complaining in the comments, meanwhile my mind is blown away at the graphics mobile phones are able to generate, having grown up watching 8-bit graphics and sprites become the new standard on large, purpose built gaming hardware.
Its coming to Switch, but as a Free 2 Play, so i guess microtransactions are still in that version. But hey most of it is free😁😁 and i think the Switch will run this pretty well because of its cooling system.
Elliot Bridgewater Seems ok to me but when I recorded the gameplay it was so slow and jerky it made me think something was wrong. Granted it's not perfectly smooth by any stretch of the imagination but the video my phone captured internally was just beyond terrible. Though I did use a 3rd party app an not Samsung's own integrated option in those cases.
They've flat out denied in these comments as well. This isn't a video about how good this game is. It's about how it is dealing with the challenges of developing for mobile hardware. And it points out lots of problems in this and it spends a minute complaining about microtransactions.
Great Video John! I play on PC almost exclusively but console- and this mobile analisys videos are so interesting! I love how developers come up with intelligent solutions and workarounds on how to get the best presentation on limited hardware. In the end everyone benefits from that! Keep on the fantastic work!
Why? The technology in the iPhone x is incredibly compact, and expensive. It likely costs more to make than an equal msrp pc. Feel free to carry a battery powered atx desktop in your pocket though.
Justin Adams It only cost 200-250 to make an Iphone x should cost at most $600 they rip their customers off kinda like samsung and high end androids do too now
Too bad its an..... awful videogame. A poorly paced free to play, 30 fps racing game with limited and on-rails-ified controls to allow for touchscreen play and repedative tracks since most players wont play for more than 10 minutes at a time.
Besides Black Desert coming out for mobile, Darkness Rises is INSANE. On the S9 plus on Custom settings you can achieve 1440p, 60 fps and even 120hz for the refresh rate added in. It does have annoying ads that you can disable once in the game but prepare for more than a few of them to disable.
Higher =/= better, past retina there is no difference, besides the games runs at the same res as iPhone, way below native. Android's are cheap trashy phones sold for premium prices.
VariantAEC controls literally change nothing. the races feel dull and not exciting at all because of the terrible feel of speed and the game is prompting you to pay your way through the game
No. Every single time we've done a sponsored video people come screaming. This is NOT sponsored and we get absolutely nothing from it. It's ridiculously insulting that you would even suggest that.
If this game were on steam as a paid game without microtransactions i would buy it. I miss fast, high quality arcade racers so much. Maybe John could give Gameloft a push about this?
But on the 3" screen, it looks BETTER than GT Sport or Driveclub rather than worse. You can test this by streaming to the screen from your windows pc. They have done things that make this game LOOK equal or even better on the hardware, despite being far less demanding.
i'm addicted with this game since launch day, very intense gameplay with breathtaking visual and great soundtrack (even better than AAA racing games like NFS Playback and The Crew 2). but yeah, even with near stock Android, Snapdragon 845, and 8 GB or RAM, my OnePlus 6 still struggle to reach stable performance on high quality setting for this beast. i really wish one day Gameloft would sell this game on PSN or Xbox Game Store. While a full paid version will be preferable, i don't mind the freemium version as long as i can play it on my flat screen tv on 60 fps, full visual flair, with a gamepad.
stop saying "the polygon count is xx many triangles". A polygon can only be a triangular shape, so it's just "the polygon count is xx" or even better "the poly-count is xx"
Ace Futura Maybe I'm just being pedantic here, but historically, there have been quad based renderers. They pretty much died off long ago, but they do exist.
You're wrong. Quads, Tris, Sexts and quints have all been used in games. HE clarifies triangles because he's been in this profession for long enough that clarification was important at various points.
Justin Adams I'm not familiar with anything more than quads myself. I've seen N-gons used in modeling, but really any larger number of points are typically simplified down to tris when rendered on modern hardware. Quick Google'ing didn't turn anything up on more than quads, so could you list some examples? This is interesting to me.
Making me think. Off the top of my head, I know Shenmue was a messy mix of trips, quads, and ngons. 3d0 lacked a dedicated triangle rasterizer, but had a dedicated Boolean coprocessor. This led to complex model building, but great optimization from streamlined formulas, so they experimented with a bunch of different geometries in their true 3d games.
I play this game once in a while on my iPhone 11. It runs in 60 fps, and the phone stays cool. No throttling or a heated up back. And with this iPhone 11, the battery last for a long time even when playing games like Asphalt 9 Legends.
How can they fix it on Android My s9+ has a better GPU and more ram then X yet not as good as x cpu but still very close So what can they do Will Vulcan help Would love 60fps or even a locked 30
Im so disapointed by this game, so what it has nice graphics if all you do is press 4 buttons and dont even control your car IN A RACING GAME, like heck off.
I really wish that mobile game developers would treat their game as if they were being developed for console, e.g. No microtransactions/IAPs, Free-to-Play business model, etc. and instead focused all their energy into game design, story and visuals instead of constantly having to think about how they're going to rip us off.
It's really not. In play the game is slick and easy to see without any major clipping, tearing, or slowdown even on older android phones. Even blown up to 65" it doesn't look bad at all.
The Shadowgunner, let me correct myself.. when I say console i was more leaning towards the ps4 and xbox one.. of which burnout is a old game I played many years ago.. no newer renditions were made. We need fresh..
Gameproz Gonsalves Have you heard about The Crew series? I enjoyed the first one and the crew 2 coming soon (or its out already, I don't remember) It's not like asphalt, but it is enjoyable.
The Ridge Racer music really makes me yearn for a Ridge Racer Type 4 remaster for the PS4/Switch. Namco should do what Activision did with the Crash Bandicoot trilogy and give us a remaster of Ridge Racer 1-4 on one disc...and maybe even include Rave Raver as a bonus seeing as how it wasn't released on a home console
Yep, my iPad pro 9.7 with the same specs as the iPhone 6s runs it great. Granted, I don't have a comparable Android device to test it against, but it is impressive.

Royal Blazen Spewing specs like that it the most useless thing one can do when comparing phones. Let's compare how they actually do: Screen: This is fairly subjective. I hear a lot of people say that the Galaxy screen is the best out there, and others say it's the iPhone X. I think it's up to personal preference, weather you prefer more realistic or more vibrant calibration. RAM: iOS has always had far better RAM management than Android, and it pretty much makes up for the difference in hardware. In iOS 11 this decreased a little bit, there is a slight difference, but it's not too extreme. Certainly not half the performance. Internal storage: Might I remind you that only now recently did the S9 become available in 256 GB, before then you could only get it in 128. Yes, it's nice to have expandable storage, however it's significantly slower than in-built storage, making it not really ideal for apps, therefore limiting it's uses. SoC: The The A11 has been consistently shown to be significantly more powerful than the snapdragon alternative. Camera: Most reviewers tend to agree the iPhone X is the second best camera after the Pixel 2. Hardware: both have great hardware. Really it's a tie here. Speakers: iPhone X is far better. Authentication: depends on your preference. If you prefer fingerprint scanners, obviously the S9 is for you. If you prefer FaceID-like tech, the iPhone X is miles and miles ahead against the Iris scanner.
Well, take a look at Fast RMX. It looks gorgeous, and runs at 1080p 60fps (even with 4 players splitscreen according to Shin'en, the developer of this Switch masterpiece), also that game destroys Asphalt 9 by a long shot.
Yeah man, this game would have to he upscaled for the switch. Fast RMX proved that the switch can deliver up to a 1080p 60fps experience while also looking incredible.
My super budget (£150) Huawei p8 lite (Decent specs: 3G ram and octa core 1.6-2.4GHz CPU handles the game fine on default. I don't know the exact fps, but its more than playable and has never ever stuttered.
Will you be doing an updated video now that it runs 60fps on iPhone XS and XS Max??? I thought it was game changing to have this quality racing at 60fps on mobile.
I was waiting for this video. This game has unparalleled graphics when it comes to mobile gaming. It even runs quite smooth on a lower mid tier phone like Redmi Note 4. No huge lags, but resolution lowered down and motion blur off. Please make a video on how it hold up in lower end devices as well.
It's 2018 and the technology we have to make more than 4000mAh batteries is already here and we are still limited on 4000 or less battery capacity. Sure it can cost more but ASUS made a phone that hasmore than 5000mAh battery and it's very affordable.
If you take into account you have optimization options on the Samsung S9 you can get a higher clock speed for gaming... it's a feature you can use without rooting your phone... this is why I enjoy Samsung
Game is on the Nintendo Switch as well now, a fantastic port, would love if digital foundry ever put it in the spotlight because it's a 60fps really great free to play title. I cover all the ongoing events in the game on my channel. If you guys are playing it on Switch you should give me a look 🏁❤🏁
I miss arcade racers of the PS2 Burnout era. Seems like they're quite rare for SOME reason I can't fathom, or they tend to come out in the form of open world free roam games, which just don't work as well with high speed arcade action racers in my opinion. The last really good one I played was Need For Speed Hot Pursuit on PS3. That game needs a remaster.
It’s an impressive game for smartphones. There are more smartphone games which are visually impressive like Pro Evolution Soccer 2019, Real Racing 3, FIFA Mobile and soon Skyrim by Bethesda. But touch only controls with such games are a pain in the ass. Asphalt 9 is intuitive, it races by itself and sometimes you have to press on the screen. Luckily there are many physical Bluetooth controllers to game with.
The songs that play in order: Ridge Racer 6 Soundtrack - 08 - Sueno Del Mar Ridge Racer Type 4 Soundtrack - Naked Glow Ridge Racer Type 4 Soundtrack - Garage Talk There. I've saved you 7 months of hunting for those catchy tunes on your own. Because dammit I had to go through the soundtracks for EACH GAME to find them. Thank me later.
The microtransactions are pretty console quality
oof
Right in the wallet.

You guys realize microtransactions started on mobile games right?
Gameloft have always been great at pushing high end mobile graphics and penny pinching.
Roman Bellic yea but modern combat 5 runs like crap even on my laptop which runs fortnite at 30-40fps 768p
FreePenguin5000 your laptop sounds like dog shit.
Roman let's go bowling
you got me at the last part 👌
the freakin' Vietnamese PC porting team even made the game playable on 60fps, wtf Gameloft
Are people actually disliking this just cause it’s a mobile game? 🤔 Come on guys, technology is interesting no matter the platform.
Yeah, do you like getting ripped off $20 when buying an unlucky card pack but in 2K, HDR, glowing particles and detail reflections?
Gehab I'm disliking the in-app purchases and the invasive privacy policy.
Disliked because of its stupid mechanic where you even can't control your car yourself anymore...
Artem Bedratyi You can disable that.
Neoand12 No, Payback's lootbox are completely optional and innesesary to buy, you can play perfect without them.
Please, first play the game and talk about.
In Asphalt is different.
Only if high graphics didn’t strain the battery life so hard.
It’s battery life is crazy since it’s a problem even on the switch.
If only junk food didn't make me fat.
even on the 3ds and vita, i remember those days when I can play with my GBA for more than 3 hours
thebahooplamaster Yeah it's too bad that batteries seems to lag behind compaired to the rest of technology.
thebahooplamaster portable battery chargers are the solution.
thebahooplamaster the switch has garbage battery life. IPhone charges while playing it, so it's fine. A low graphics potato mode might be nice though for preserving life a little longer.
I wish Asphalt had a paid version without the stupid micro transactions, but hey thats mobile market I guess
Oh shit you said that already
Totally agree. I rather pay $5-$10 than being forced to wait for timers to get to the next race.
No. There are many amazing paid mobile games. For great paid racing games check out Horizon Chase , Reckless Racing 3 and Rush Rally 2.
Think of it on a switch, would be amazing
they used to be around $10 on mobile up till asphalt 6 however since then they have moved to the free to play mindset however they did try to release a paid asphalt game around 2 years ago asphalt nitro though had very little success due to it being exclusively available on there web store at the time so after 3 months with no updates they decided to re-release it as a free too play game later the same year, so unfortunately i dont think they are going to go back to the pay to play method any time soon
Ahhh Gameloft, the leaders of graphics quality, unfair matchmaking and overpriced microtransactions, how I _not_ missed you.
Teddy the Espurr Making the 2DS more affordable if you think about it...
matchmaking was fixed though..
leaders of knock off games too
would you pay a couple of quater for the full but short experience, or get dragged constantly with microtransaction in front of you knowing you're missing out a lot?
genuine question, because i'd prefer Daytona USA any day
EA's Little brother apparently

TouchDrive existing in A9 basically proved your point, it isn't about gameplay and fun anymore
Koncz Dávid Ohh shut it....lol.....played 2 - 9, and they all improve gloriously
I remember this one time where when I was playing games in a blackberry phone from my uncle's...
It was an amazing experience...
How can it even begin to compare to the SNES, when 90% of mobile games can be finish under 4 hours, maybe even 2?
Oh my gosh, never thought will get such a technical review of a mobile game. Congrats for taking such a task when most gamers looking down upon mobile games
Good work, John! I remember seeing this a while back and thinking it was cool. Glad I wasn't crazy.
I was really blown away on how good Asphalt 9 looks on my Note 8. It's so beautiful.
Mike Está Aqui it’s not about the screen, I myself really like touch screens and adjusted to it.. and many people did too.. But a lot of the games themselves on Mobile are just a quick money-grab.. mobile developers are greedy af :/
All they want is money, they don’t care if you enjoy the game or not.. just give em more money.
me too, looks great on Note 8 but performance is lacking
exisskrk it’s sad that only the older iPhone X can handle Asphalt 9 graphics fidelity.
Mlordy it's weird isn't it, in speed tests and everyday usage Note 8 is faster but when it comes to gaming iPhone wins. I guess it's easy for developers to optimise games for just 3 different iPhones
exisskrk I think it has to do with the A11 SoC being superior to SD 845 & such. The thing scores 4200 single core score in Geekbench 4
I downloaded the games and was blown aways by the looks but uninstalled it shortly after because of the boring gameplay
Asphalt 8 was way better
You can disable assist mode after the first chapter, is much funnier then.
Need to play more than +3 hours of game to make this full fun, but yeah, too boring in early coz all content is locked
MDL Channel yeah, the problem is that not many people check the settings. And by not checking they don't see other control options. Giving them bad impressions
Console quality graphics, less than PS1 quality gameplay.
they spent all their budget on graphics but not a penny on actual gameplay
Corktail
_cough 30second races cough_
Gameplay is actually good, better than most games on the switch.
I prefer Mario Kart rather than this garbage
I haven't played 9, but 8 had fairly good gameplay. The driving feels pretty good (it's not wheel obviously, but it's fine). The takedowns are fun, the track design is pretty good. It's arcadey when there aren't very many anymore, and it does it better than most. I don't expect Three Fields to do better (granted, they'll have a smaller budget) when they put out dangerous driving, despite creating burnout.
Cyrribrae
The driving in general is good and all but the steering for few cars is "so good" that the car just starts skidding in a way that its sudden death and you cant do anything about it.
(im pretty sure its the same in A9)
I wouldn't call the track design good, because the tracks have obvious shortcuts (if you dont take them, you are stupid) and there arent many of the tracks (they could have just made more tracks in one location rather than just reverse).
It looks a bit better than a 360 game but it doesn't look anywhere near as good as an xbox one or ps4 game should, the cars look good but the texture filtering is terrible
have you forgotten that it’s still a mobile game?
what mobile games do in my experience in the graphical side of things is they put as much stuff in the places youre looking at and the stuff that isnt directly visible is completely shit csr racing 2 has this that the models of the cars are insanely detailed but the background environments are nothing more than ps2 era
en mi note 8 los graficos se vén bastante bien, creo que tu tienes un movil gama-media.
Looks better for the excesive bloom
Even Fast RMX on the Switch looks considerably better. This remainds me to Gran Turismo 6 or Forza on the 360.
On Android you can root and edit the game configuration file to enable 60fps, and it's relatively easy to reach 60fps on 1-2 years old phones given if it's not thermal throttled
How do you do that, I have a magisk rooted pixel
use any root file explorer and navigate to root /data/data/com.gameloft.android.ANMP.GloftA9HM/files/, open the GameOptions_saved.json with any text editor, find render_renderPeriod and change it accordingly.
Chocolate Sheep only peasants eat at McDonald's bro, commiserations.
This actually looks really fun. It looks like a lot of care went into everything. I would buy this in a heartbeat on Switch.
Asphalt 8 is much better, but both games need up to 144hz refresh rate support, uncapped fps, and dynamic resolution support for maximum fps and lowest latency.
Asphalt 9 for Nintendo Switch announced. Rejoice.
Pretending that mobile gaming isn't the largest gaming market is weird?
Sr. D is the 1050 ti a good GPU?
The GPU in the Snapdragon 845 (and even the 835 actually) is much more powerful/efficient than Apple's custom GPU solution in the latest iPhones, the issues with the android handsets is purely down to Android's terrible 3D API, which could be the fault of openGL, hopefully Vulkan fixes those issues.
Liam ?
Liam ikr
Vulkan FTW
TR BLITZ
Idk about the benchmark
But I can comfortably run pubg at 2k@60fps
With the max settings
Using gfx tool
S9+
great game, one downside: 2 days and 7% completion before you hit a paywall
I haven't hit a paywall...odd.
tenow Thanks for telling me not to try the game out! Gameloft can go bankrupt for all I care.
im at 69%(LOL) haven't bought anything but its pretty hard
I pre-registered and they gave me quite a lot of money and tokens in the beginning
tenow Weird, Im at 23%, still no paywall
I do remember paying 7€ for copy of Asphalt 4 on n-gage 2.0. Frame rate was abysmal on Nokia 5320, but the graphics. Nowdays it seems like if you put up your game on sale for 7€ you are just laughed at and nobody buys it.
More coverage of breakthrough phone titles please! I want to stay informed of impressive technical success in the mobile gaming space!
They should drop this on Switch :D
switch has FAST RMX
they would have to downgrade then
Mucrush Switch would run it with less graphical fidelity though.
Melony toni no they wouldn’t
Melony toni
moron, they would actually have free up space from the switch hardware with room to upgrade the graphics more if they choose to.
I haven't looked at mobile games for years, last I saw an asphalt game was about a decade ago. Gotta say it looks impressive. I still don't give a shit about mobile games though.
Most mobile games are cash grabs anyway so they're already bad to begin with
same, when i just want to waste some time i usually browse the internet or watch some tv series on my phone, its already hard to play games on touchscreen and intensive games drains my battery like crazy.
Maurice Dieyette ur a joke.if u like mobile gaming over consoles.... Borderline psychopath, that is what u are sir
Am I the only idiot that is bothered by the absence of dynamic shadows?
mondodimotori because it's mobile game.
Strange... I heard in this techical rewiew that the game is comparable to a game on current gen console...
I'm quite sure the last time i saw that kind of shaders applied on shadows was on late last, last generation game, in late 2004.
And it’s wired because it’s successor asphalt 8 had real time shadows while this one doesn’t
Another mobile game that have really good graphics is Alchemia Story. You should take a look at this game.
Thibaut Mahringer I was talking about asphalt 9! Sorry, I miss-read your comment XD
Jawan Meizu Oh no, i don't care about Asphalt 9, especially because of the excessive micro-transactions. It's sad that such a beautiful mobile game does almost force you to spend money.
What ?😂 those graphics are appaling! You must be joking 😂
comparing consoles to mobile phones... that must hurt a lot :D
LOL
Now compare PC graphics with console graphics
No, that's a compliment for consoles.
I use xone and its good but why not to hate it cuz it's popular?
MCV Official Gaming Channel, PC graphics are way better than console graphics, so compare that.
MCV Official Gaming Channel Yoir reply makes no sense at all.
That said it *is* better looking than a lot of games you'd see on 360 or PS3... so maybe Wii U or Switch level?
asmcint this is barely better than a 360 game. Fast Racing Neo and RMX look a generation ahead of this.
I'd say that compites with Need for Speed Most Wanted on the PS Vita.
Fabricio M Vega You need to get your eyes checked, PS Vita... For real.
Fabricio Vega you are kidding me???
This kida blew me away and moving from my moto g7 power to redmi note 8 pro the leap in visuals was noticeable! ALso the Ridge Racer Type 4 ost in this video made me smile!!
bloom and lens flares = good graphics
People's pictures on Deviantart look like PS2/Wii games from 2007?
You have to admit the graphics do look good though
What about the part where he said that the cars have more polygon than some PS4/ Xbox games?
jacky yo they still look like they are made out of plastic
Corktail of course, that's why this effects were invented :)
Gameloft makes great free racing and shooting games.
If you can afford them.
If I have a choice between the same game on a smartphone or a PC/game console I think 99% of the time, most people will obvious choose the PC/console instead of a smartphone.
xxnike629xx I mean obviously, heat and battery are issues. Also touch controls are uncomfortable mostly.
PiCABLESKY yeah but those are mostly casual games.
One of the few games I play with friends is pubg mobile because most don't have a gaming pc like I do and everyone has a good android phone.
PiCABLESKY
No matter what you say it doesn't change the fact that the mobile game player base is on games like candycrush and shit similar to that.
Great to see mobile being covered as well. I don't play these games but it's genuinely interesting to see where the mobile space is heading!
"buy some loot crate"
People who know EA: TRIGGERED
I would like this for the Switch.
Well... It's coming soon
Well... It's coming tomorrow
Well... It's already here
Well. It's out now
Well...shit.
burnout paradise came out in 2008 on ps3/xbox 360 and it looks better then any mobile racing game
its locked 60 fps open world
its 2018 and mobile gaming still sucks
Wow really? Who would have thought a console game would look better than a mobile game
wow thats insane! who would have thought a console that is 100x the size of a phone and with a physical would be able to have better graphics and better controls than a mobile game! but thats not even true because this game has better graphics than the original burnout paradise. remastered is a different story, but thats a 2018 game
Asphalt, Ridge Racer and Real Racing do offer some pretty good racing overall. The levels, options and car detail do in fact, rival some console games.
Who needs Asphalt 9, when you have Fire Emblem Heroes and the power of waifus!
and gacha p2w systems!
Well, FEH is really good and not P2W at all. Yes, you have the whales who runs a Zelgius+10 with BF, but you can win fights with better strategy.
I think FEH is the most generous gatcha game out there, it is Mobile Game done right.
LOVE THARJA
cringe
FE Heroes is great
All this complaining in the comments, meanwhile my mind is blown away at the graphics mobile phones are able to generate, having grown up watching 8-bit graphics and sprites become the new standard on large, purpose built gaming hardware.
Blasphemous sim racer on a controller The graphics are impressive i admit. but gameplay is what matters.
why do i hear ridge race type 4 soundtrack here?
Its coming to Switch, but as a Free 2 Play, so i guess microtransactions are still in that version.
But hey most of it is free😁😁 and i think the Switch will run this pretty well because of its cooling system.
I love how you do technical analysis not only on PC, but on every platform, even mobile!
It doesn't have fluid performance on an S8+, even in low detail. Mini stutters all over the place.
Elliot Bridgewater
Seems ok to me but when I recorded the gameplay it was so slow and jerky it made me think something was wrong.
Granted it's not perfectly smooth by any stretch of the imagination but the video my phone captured internally was just beyond terrible. Though I did use a 3rd party app an not Samsung's own integrated option in those cases.
Android is trash, it's a cheap knock off iPhone.
Exynos version i guess?
It is smooth 30 frames at ultra with my one plus 5
No it's not, KP-48. It's an Android issue, not a hardware issue.
Asphalt and Gameloft, what a sweet memory when I was in high school with an awesome iPod touch.
Now the game is coming to switch! I'm good with that considering this is on PC as well.
Videos like this are one of the main reasons I love supporting you on Patreon. Keep up the great work!
To be honest - this seems like a paid advertisement.
Leebabins but it isn't.
StarShape29 You're sure about this how?
Leebabins becuase if it was, it would be mentioned at the beginning if the video or at the very least in the description, one of youtube's policies
They've flat out denied in these comments as well. This isn't a video about how good this game is. It's about how it is dealing with the challenges of developing for mobile hardware. And it points out lots of problems in this and it spends a minute complaining about microtransactions.
Leebabins why would a mobile dev pay a RUclips channel who's audience is PC nerds to promote their game?
Nice Ridge Racer Type 4 music half way through the video. Amazed though how close this pars with PS3 graphics.
Alec Leigh naked glow babyyyyy
I too was digging the R4 music in the background. Now there is a game that deserves a true remake in 60FPS and HDR!
you should have tested the S9+ version with the Game Tuner app by Samsung, it runs better and in 1440p
Great Video John! I play on PC almost exclusively but console- and this mobile analisys videos are so interesting! I love how developers come up with intelligent solutions and workarounds on how to get the best presentation on limited hardware. In the end everyone benefits from that! Keep on the fantastic work!
Damn it looks so nice...and graphics is so damn good...I can only imagine what mobiles will be in next 5-10 years...just amazing
Ok man that's for u for me everything was good...and I finish this cool game with fun...
Felipe M. Me too
Just because he said the graphics look good, doesn't mean that he's only interested in the graphics wtf haha. You're a downer
Mobile games will look shit at that time because consoles like PS5 are running incredible games
wtf PS5???
It's always a pleasure to see your videos. You're so passionate to graphics and eye cands that's we all loves to see. Thank you !
Its' ridiculous that an iphone x costs as much as a high end pc here in India.
Why? The technology in the iPhone x is incredibly compact, and expensive. It likely costs more to make than an equal msrp pc. Feel free to carry a battery powered atx desktop in your pocket though.
Justin Adams
It only cost 200-250 to make an Iphone x should cost at most $600 they rip their customers off kinda like samsung and high end androids do too now
Justin Adams is it really any surprise that apple over charges for things? I mean ffs they charge 4000$ to replace a ram stick on a 2018 imac pro
Guy, in my country the price is even worse. $45000 AR$ for a fucking phone (i'm from Argentina).
definitely prefer a high end pc over a iPhone X that is 30x more likely to get stolen
I've been hoping you guys would cover this ever since I downloaded it. Great job!
Asphalt has always been good especially to drive on.
Oh man, Asphalt on the DS. I remember buying that at launch, and playing the heck out of it because I didn't have anything else.
Too bad its an..... awful videogame. A poorly paced free to play, 30 fps racing game with limited and on-rails-ified controls to allow for touchscreen play and repedative tracks since most players wont play for more than 10 minutes at a time.
You're a hater.
Love the Ridge Racer 6 song you chose for this. RR6 is one of my favorite racers ever.
songs name? Like the one before starting the analysis and the one at the very end
Don't forget the S9+ is WAY higher resolution than any iPhone.
Higher =/= better, past retina there is no difference, besides the games runs at the same res as iPhone, way below native. Android's are cheap trashy phones sold for premium prices.
This kind of game doesn't run anywhere near native resolution on something like the Galaxy S9+.
Oscar Cooke-Abbott so but don’t run better. Even iPhone 7 runs better
SvD KILLSWITCH true
Oscar Cooke-Abbott phone fanboys are far worse than vonsole or pc fanboys.
This sold me on the game, nice job.
but the gameplay is horrible
pepodmc
Try changing the controls in the options menu...
If it was sponsored by gameloft than they would be required by RUclips to say in the description and the video that it's sponsored
How is gameplay horrible? Are you playing on a 10 year old phone?
If this game were on steam as a paid game without microtransactions i would buy it. I miss fast, high quality arcade racers so much. Maybe John could give Gameloft a push about this?
you have to be stupid greed loft won't do anything that will lose them money
In terms of visual it similar to that nintendo switch game racing games FAST RMX only around 2 GB.
BAYDROID ! Games yes exactly
This is more like a switch game more than anything, this is nowwhere near as good looking as GT sport, Driveclub, Forza horizon 3 or 4 or Forza 7.
But on the 3" screen, it looks BETTER than GT Sport or Driveclub rather than worse. You can test this by streaming to the screen from your windows pc. They have done things that make this game LOOK equal or even better on the hardware, despite being far less demanding.
@@mauryj.3415 how does it look like a switch game? the only racing game it has is drive club unlimited which is a straight mobile port
when I noticed the Ridge Racer music playing in the background I couldn't concentrate on the narration anymore
A pretty game that plays itself... bad.
Panino Manino you know that controls settings exist, right?
Chairo 43 No.
Well now you do. You can disable autodrive. The game is quite fun when you do so.
Justin Adams "normal" controls are just as bad , in muktiplayer its not even worth talking about taking touchdrive off
Alex Lmao if you you touchdrive in multiplayer then you’re gonna lose, it’s so bad you can’t take any shortcuts at all
i'm addicted with this game since launch day, very intense gameplay with breathtaking visual and great soundtrack (even better than AAA racing games like NFS Playback and The Crew 2). but yeah, even with near stock Android, Snapdragon 845, and 8 GB or RAM, my OnePlus 6 still struggle to reach stable performance on high quality setting for this beast.
i really wish one day Gameloft would sell this game on PSN or Xbox Game Store.
Hahaha, A9 actually uses quads, not just polygons. On android, objects in the distance by default settings are converted to quads to save performance.
I play this game once in a while on my iPhone 11. It runs in 60 fps, and the phone stays cool. No throttling or a heated up back. And with this iPhone 11, the battery last for a long time even when playing games like Asphalt 9 Legends.
How can they fix it on Android
My s9+ has a better GPU and more ram then X yet not as good as x cpu but still very close
So what can they do
Will Vulcan help
Would love 60fps or even a locked 30
Prabhjot Lidhar no they’ll never fix it
ᅟ ᅟ how come
Prabhjot Lidhar cuz nobody cares bout that cheap android crap y’all like people from lower class
Prabhjot Lidhar GPU and CPU is better in iPhone X
Maicon Afonso
No only cpu
GPU on the sd835 was better
Love that throw back Ridge Racer 7 music
Im so disapointed by this game, so what it has nice graphics if all you do is press 4 buttons and dont even control your car IN A RACING GAME, like heck off.
You can turn off automatic driving in settings
Settings man settings
Phone game, duh
Oh boi i sure feel stupid now, thanks fellas, and sorry for my ignorance. Have a nice day
You ever heard of settings brah?
I really wish that mobile game developers would treat their game as if they were being developed for console, e.g. No microtransactions/IAPs, Free-to-Play business model, etc. and instead focused all their energy into game design, story and visuals instead of constantly having to think about how they're going to rip us off.
Still looks better than the crew 2 and runs better
Man, I remember playing the original Asphalt on the Nintendo DS back in the day. Sure has come a long way.
Whoah. Talking about some unclear visuals. With all these postprocessing shenanigans it's actually worse than visuals in Syndicate 2012...
It's really not. In play the game is slick and easy to see without any major clipping, tearing, or slowdown even on older android phones. Even blown up to 65" it doesn't look bad at all.
That RRType 4 soundtrack in the background...the feelings man
This game needs to come to console... since console is lacking such a fun and smashing good racer.
Gameproz Gonsalves Burnout doesn't exist for you?
The Shadowgunner, let me correct myself.. when I say console i was more leaning towards the ps4 and xbox one.. of which burnout is a old game I played many years ago.. no newer renditions were made. We need fresh..
Gameproz Gonsalves true I don’t want shit pay2win games on console.
Game loft was good before asphalt 7 is going downhill
Gameproz Gonsalves Have you heard about The Crew series? I enjoyed the first one and the crew 2 coming soon (or its out already, I don't remember)
It's not like asphalt, but it is enjoyable.
Gameproz Gonsalves Burnout paradise literally launched 2 months ago
The Ridge Racer music really makes me yearn for a Ridge Racer Type 4 remaster for the PS4/Switch.
Namco should do what Activision did with the Crash Bandicoot trilogy and give us a remaster of Ridge Racer 1-4 on one disc...and maybe even include Rave Raver as a bonus seeing as how it wasn't released on a home console
It's scary that my iPhone 6s, 3 years old is so smooth still, everything is faster than the average Android, iPhone saves me upgrading every year.
Wybrem you are trying way too hard
Yep, my iPad pro 9.7 with the same specs as the iPhone 6s runs it great. Granted, I don't have a comparable Android device to test it against, but it is impressive.
Iphone is a upgrade who are kidding here 😂 it's like comparing a OG Ps4 to a xbox one x

Royal Blazen Spewing specs like that it the most useless thing one can do when comparing phones. Let's compare how they actually do:
Screen: This is fairly subjective.
Royal Blazen, my iPhone is great for everything, I'm a pc guy so I don't care about phone specs, it just need to work which iPhone does.
I hear that glorious Ridge Racer Type 4 OST in the background. Fitting
downgrade it 10x and put it on the switch..
But the Switch is more powerful than these phones.
Good graphics
200 ads and microtransactions per minute
Me: meh I'll just watch a youtube video
Galaxy S9 is meh, should have tried some proper Android phone, OP6 or something like Razer Phone...
Even though razor phone is massively Underpowered when compared to s9
Yaro Slav I'm playing it on the op5 and it's amazingly fluid :)
For me, gameplay stands higher than graphics.
Yaro Slav same GPU and CPU
Maicon Afonso nah s9 has the snapdragon 845 and andreno 630 while the other ones have 830 and andreno 530
The OP6 has the same GPU and CPU of the Galaxy S9. The problem is probably the RAM and Software. I use a Galaxy S9 and it's working great for me
Any good Hack-n-Slash games (possibly offline) recommendations for iPhone 6? (Possibly free, not want to invest much in my phone’s last years)
My super budget (£150) Huawei p8 lite (Decent specs: 3G ram and octa core 1.6-2.4GHz CPU handles the game fine on default. I don't know the exact fps, but its more than playable and has never ever stuttered.
Will you be doing an updated video now that it runs 60fps on iPhone XS and XS Max??? I thought it was game changing to have this quality racing at 60fps on mobile.
So many attempts still you weren't able to do single nitroshockwave or 360° flip 😂
Lamborghini centenario, Bugatti Chiron, McLaren P1, and more multi-million hypercars that we all would love to own
I was waiting for this video. This game has unparalleled graphics when it comes to mobile gaming. It even runs quite smooth on a lower mid tier phone like Redmi Note 4. No huge lags, but resolution lowered down and motion blur off. Please make a video on how it hold up in lower end devices as well.
That 3 3ast 3 3urious reference made me restart the video a few times because I couldn't hear what was being said over my laughter.
It's 2018 and the technology we have to make more than 4000mAh batteries is already here and we are still limited on 4000 or less battery capacity. Sure it can cost more but ASUS made a phone that hasmore than 5000mAh battery and it's very affordable.
If you take into account you have optimization options on the Samsung S9 you can get a higher clock speed for gaming... it's a feature you can use without rooting your phone... this is why I enjoy Samsung
a really in depth analysis, enjoyed watching it
Game is on the Nintendo Switch as well now, a fantastic port, would love if digital foundry ever put it in the spotlight because it's a 60fps really great free to play title.
The songs that play in order:
Ridge Racer 6 Soundtrack - 08 - Sueno Del Mar
Ridge Racer Type 4 Soundtrack - Naked Glow
Ridge Racer Type 4 Soundtrack - Garage Talk
There. I've saved you 7 months of hunting for those catchy tunes on your own.
Because dammit I had to go through the soundtracks for EACH GAME to find them.
Thank me later.
Great video guys would love a follow up to this seeing how it performs on older iphones and androids.
