I love all your suggestions, however, I don't entirely agree with the 1st one. Rather than Craigslist, I was thinking of using Kijiji which is similar to Craigslist. Unfortunately I think that will only bring me clients who are price shopping. Last time I tried to use Kijijiji or Craigslist all I got were several marriage proposals from people who were not very good at typing in English.
I just put up my first CL ad based on this video. What kind of time does it usually take to get a hit? How many ads do you tend to run? Just wondering if I should put up a few more ads in nearby cities.
Hello, the more you post the higher you are on the list because newest posts are at the top. I think once a week is good. But you should do a search and see how many others are posting the same service. If not many, you don't need to post as often to be up top. www.BookkeepingLife.com
That's apples and oranges really. QB is bookkeeping software, so if you're going to be doing bookkeeping, you need to know it. Excel is a tool that is very helpful for bookkeeping.
Also, I didn't realize you could do advertising on Yelp for Business. I thought it was just for setting up a business account and then you have to wait for people to post reviews of your business.
Hi Steve, I tried posting on Craigslist in several locations twice for a month and got zero leads. I’m also on Yelp but didn’t get much from that. And I’ve been in many fb groups to interact and network with people, but didn’t bring me any clients either. It’s really discouraging after doing so many ways to get clients for over 2 years and got nothing. 😓
Hello, 2 years of doing that!? I'd question the quality of your branding and advertising if that's the case. Feel free to email me at steve@bookkeepinglife.com to share your branding with me (your website) and I can give you my 2 cents. You can't effectively advertise without excellent branding. Then you can't effectively get clients without effectively advertising. Plus you need to know how to respond/talk to potential clients so you can close the deal. Anything short on any of those points means no client. Hope this helps, but email me and I'll take a look.
Thanks for the video, Steve! I have a question as I entertain the idea of starting an accounting firm. Do you have suggestions or a video on which type of business entity is best to form in CA? If I'm not mistaken, you have to have a CPA license to be able to register your business as S- corp right?
Hi Janete, That, plus a ton of other things, is exactly what my course teaches. bookkeepinglife.com Just let me know if you have any questions after looking at that. Best, Steve
I have access to nextdoor digest, a way to converse with neighbors on a big busy street Everything from lost cats to where to find__. Do you think this would a possible way to get clients?
Jan Davis If you see someone posting looking for a bookkeeper, I think it’s good to say you do. Posting otherwise might be looked at as spamming, unless everyone is doing it.
There is a not a set number of clients to be successful as it really depends on your goals. In general I carry 15-20 clients, but some have 3-5 and others have over 20.
I think my main question is, how do you let them know you're only going to be working remotely and nights/weekends? IE - you're keeping your day job and this is "just" a side hustle.
K LoLo good question. You don’t need to tell them when you’re working on their stuff. That’s irrelevant. They’ll know you’re remote based on your website/advertising, how you’re putting yourself out there. They don’t need to know if you have another job or not. They’d never ask and you don’t volunteer that info. Hope this helps!
I really enjoy the relaxed way you talk and teach! Your videos are incredibly helpful, Steve! Thank you so much!
Thank you!
I’m 1 minute in and already learning. Thank you
Helpful for me.

Do you know which is more important to know as a bookkeeper, Quickbooks or Excel?
That's apples and oranges really. QB is bookkeeping software, so if you're going to be doing bookkeeping, you need to know it. Excel is a tool that is very helpful for bookkeeping.

@@Bookkeeping_Life that makes a lot of sense!
Do you think that the craigslist approach that you talked about is still relevant in 2024?
That’s what I want to know too 😩
How many clients do you have?

Sounds awesome Steve. Can we have a small discussion in phone call, if possible.
