The Best Way to Mix Concrete When Working By Yourself

- In this video I show how to mix concrete by yourself and what I believe is the most efficient way to do so. The are many ways to pour concrete and probably the best situation is when you can have a concrete truck delivered with already mixed and ready to pour concrete. However that is not always an option especially if you are working by yourself. Other methods include using a concrete mixer machine however I feel that is better suited for a small team of individuals to operate effectively. When working by yourself you generally are left with no choice but to hand mix concrete using something like a shovel. Mixing concrete by hand is very difficult, exhausting, and time consuming. It just isn't an ideal way to mix concrete by yourself when you want to pour a substantial amount of concrete at one time.

I recently constructed a large concrete patio working all by myself. I started the concrete project hand mixing the wet concrete with a shovel and it beat me up. I then found a concrete mixing drill and things improved dramatically. I was able to increase my mixing time dramatically and work much more efficiently.

Awww, your tiny helper is ADORABLE! She was taking her moment in the spotlight so seriously - smart kiddo. I can see she's already learning from you & has the same strong work ethic. Great job dad & mom! :D
Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for getting to the content without droning on about prep work, product, use of the patio, etc. Very high volume of info in short time.
Glad you found the mixing concrete video useful. Thanks for watching and commenting.
No kidding. I watch some of videos from other people and the first two minutes are teeing up the topic with irrelevant info. So frustrating.
Subscribed for getting straight to the point
I’ve mixed 10s of thousands of bags and best way is to start your buckets soupy and then add more dust. Saves your back and makes your bucket have an even consistency
thanks for sharing your concrete mixing tip
Great concrete mixing tips. Cute little kid, may God bless you all.
Thanks, after watching your video I bought an SDS mixing paddle for my SDS drill which worked. The problem is now I don't have any excuses to start mixing concrete... The little girl is very cute too and I'm sure she keeps you busy.
Thanks and keep us posted with how your concrete project works out.
I'm in the middle of pouring a concrete veneer kitchen countertop and decided to see if I'm doing this all wrong. The baby girl at the end of the video was the highlight of my day!
Thanks Deborah. I am lucky she makes my day everyday! I hope your concrete project is going well. Please share how the countertop turns out.
you would not believe how many videos i had to go through before finding this one. THANK YOU!
You're very welcome!
Saved me tons of work, brother. A very needy widow, for whom I did this job, as well as I, of course, is in your debt! This vid made a huge difference. Thanks a million!!!
So great to hear this video was helpful with your DIY concrete project.
Genius Genius Genius!!!!! Thanks.
I have 990sqft of 4" patio to pour and this is definitely the strategy I was looking for. I will probably use a larger can but this is it!
Thanks Jeremy, You got this man. Keep me posted with how your concrete project works out.
I just bought a concrete mixer and so I thought about using one of these, but I wasn't sure. Due to my age and physical shape, the amount of lifting of these bags really determines how much energy I have left to do the screeding and finishing :)
So I'm really trying to decide what is the best way for me.
This video was just what I needed to see before my project. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for your comment. Best of luck with you concrete pour project. Let me know how it turns out.
Very useful
Same 💪🏿 now I gotta getter done ✔️
I use the exact same type, on overlays...there absolutely great investment. Very nice!!
Thanks for sharing
I mixed 1.1 cu. ft. of concrete from scratch with shovel and hoe in a wheelbarrow, then shoveled it into a mould on the ground a few days ago. By the end of it I could barely stand, walk, or bend down to untie my boots. It took me 2 days to recover. This method looks waaaaay easier.
For sure, if you watch the earlier videos of this DIY concrete project series you will see I started by hand mixing. The drill mix method is far more efficient when working by yourself.
I’m over 60, so I know how that goes when a job turns out to be more difficult (physically) than planned.
Kid is adorable and well spoken for a little tike!
Hi there! I took your advice and bought the same handheld mixer and continued my cementing job solo. And you're right it helped a lot and was much easier than my shovel and garden hoe method of mixing in a wheelbarrow. I just posted video. And I will link yours as well. Many thanks!
Glad I could help!
A beautiful Rainbow! Just for Gracie!!!
Just a beautiful Rainbow, dont say anything else
Beautiful Rainbow
Man I’m about to embark on a 3 palette project in my backyard and glad I watched your video. I have 168 sixty lb bags of same concrete mix and will try to get that drill mixer setup and buckets like u recommend. 🙏🏽 cute partner u have there! I’m doing it solo too and never tried before
Thanks and sounds like you have an ambitious concrete project ahead. I would recommend breaking it up into manageable sections. I have a few more videos regarding this concrete patio project and I believe the RUclips links are in the description area. Feel free to watch those before your project for a few more DIY concrete pour tips when using bagged concrete mix.
Thank you. I now have to buy one more tool I will use only once in my life.
Haha, I continued to use the mixing drill over and over again and i never anticipated I would do so.
dude - she is the cutest!!
Thanks for your video brother I bought the same drill now I want to start a home project too thank you
Glad the mixing concrete video was helpful. Best of luck with your concrete project and let me know how it goes.
Just used this myself to pour a much smaller pad at my vacation house. Wasn't able to get the mixer shipped in time and totally abused a cordless drill doing it but it was a lot faster. Have the mixer coming before the next pour is required.
Wow you were able to mix the concrete with a cordless drill?
@@MrKistel Necessity because I was at least two hours from the nearest place to buy a drill or a wheelbarrow/mixing trough. It worked but never again.
Cool of you to respond to all these videos even months later. Thanks for the video.
Any time! Happy to help when I can.
Great job... starting a project myself, very good tips in your videos. With what I've done so far I've definitely found out how hard the mixing part is! Lol
You can do it! Best of luck with your concrete project.
Don't you wish they would always stay little and pure. God bless all His little children.
Great video - If you live near a Harbor Freight store they sell similar mixer tool for $99.
Thanks for the tip!
thumbs up for the beautiful and smart little helper
Your daughter is a beautiful little girl. God bless your family.
Great video and great information
Thanks!
Can it mix aggregates such as sand and gravel with the cement?
The video shows mixing of premixed bag concrete which already includes sand and aggregate. The aggregate is pretty small in the premixed concrete however.
awesome job brother.
Thanks 👍
Cool method. I assume that the spokesperson at the end of the video is your daughter. Good Dads are like a breath of fresh air these days. We never hear about the good guys.
thanks for the comment and watching
Your little girl stole the show!
How many yards was that 2?
great thanks
Welcome 😊
What’s the difference between putting concrete by itself and adding sand
Adorable little helper that you have there !
Perfect!
thanks
Excellent video. Thanks for posting. I also checked out the steelemixer from the link below. That device is brilliant but I'm in Canada so no chance getting one of those but i'm racking my brains out now trying to figure out how to perhaps build something similar. I'm amazed at how fast it can mix concrete, 40 seconds is unreal.
They have similar ones at Canadian Tire
@@shaho3125 searched the store in Toronto and nothing.
Awesome video helpful tips and we're can I get the mixing drill tool
Thank you for the supportive comment. See the video description for information on where to find the mixing drill. Thanks
My man, I use the exact same method (ok, smaller bucket). It is easier than wheelbarrow and also easier than barrel mixer.
awesome
I agree after mixing alot of concrete around my property I did a 110 bag pad with a concrete mixer, then did a 50 bag with the paddle mixer it was a breeze. particularly when your mixing and pouring in hard to reach areas. I live in the mountains so there isn't much flat ground on my property.
I didn’t understand the video till the foreman at the end explained it. She explained it perfectly for me. 😏
kept me on task for sure!
Handmixing that much would be insane heh. This is the best you get short of a full rolling mixer - but those take up a ton of space and are impractical for when you just need to use a couple of bags for smaller projects.
As far as I know there is no issue in mixing violently. It will just mix better. You may get a bit more air entertainment (air in the mix, causing small bubbles in the finished concrete) than doing it by hand - but this is actually beneficial in most cases because it increases resistance to freeze/thaw damage. It doesn't significantly impact strength.
One small tip: Don't try to use your drill to do this. Even a powerful drill will not be able to handle this and you will burn out the motor very quick. You specifically need a low-speed, high-torque motor if you want to mix anything thicker than paint. These mixers aren't expensive so just get one designed for mixing instead of ruining your drill :)
good exercise!
He could never deny her lol😁. She looks and talks just like him👍
drill always better than back breaking shovel. 👍🏻
Seems to work pretty well.
Just curious, why not rent a cement mixer?
That is an option, but I feel this is a simpler solution when working solo and on a smaller project.
How do you think this would work to mix in larger batches, such as a backhoe bucket? I'm thinking of 10 to 15 bags per batch.
I think it could work well mixing a couple to a few bags of concrete at a time. Not sure about trying to mix ten concrete mix bags at a time. I would think it would be tough, especially if you are talking about 80lb bag mixes. Let me know how many bags of concrete you are able to comfortably mix if you get to experiment. Thanks
@@MrKistel Thanks for the reply. I'm trying to decide between buying a 3 point hitch pto driven cement mixer, or perhaps a mixer like you demonstrated in the front bucket on a backhoe. I'll let you know how it works out after the snow disappears.
What's the torque on your arms when using this mixer?
It is a decent amount of torque on the startup. Once it is up to speed it is not to bad. Just have to be mindful of the drill torque when mixing concrete.
Watch out if you're only mixing a bit of concrete the weight may be too little to keep the bucket in place.
Thanks man, Great helpful video.
Glad it helped. Thanks for the comment.
How much water per bag did you work it out to be thanks
For this mix I think it was just under 1 gallon per 80lb bag of concrete. Each manufacturer will include mix water amounts on their bags.
What a cute little one
how much water did u use per bag?
I tried to use the amount of water defined on the concrete bag instructions. Ii measured this once and poured it in a bucket. Then I marked the bucket with a marker at the water line so I just had to refill the bucket to that line every time.
كم السعر
Thanks for the great video. Unfortunately, in Canada, they don't sell the 10 GL mixing bucket that you used. Would a 5 GL bucket work instead?
Thank you. I think a 5 gallon bucket is too small to effectively mix an 80lb bag of concrete. Did you try the link in the video description?
Thanks @@MrKistel for getting back to me. Yes I did, but I will have to pay about $45 in shipping and import fees (which more than the price of the bucket itself), and shipping will take at least 10 days.
@@alexaklson1546 sorry about that. A 5 gallon may work with smaller bags of concrete.
@@alexaklson1546 small trash can ?
I was thinking of modifying one those blue plastic barrels you can get second hand. I got a couple I use for rain barrels and I see them all the time for sale in kijjiji. I was thinking of cutting it down to about 16 or 18" high and maybe mix two bags at once. I don't know. They are super rugged.
how much water in the bucket per 80lb bag? thanks for this btw!
I think for this particular bagged concrete mix the instructions suggested approximately 3.5 quarts of water per bag of concrete mix. I believe I used just less then a gallon of water per concrete bag
❤ for little cute baby.
Nice video. I just liked and subscribed. I just made a video about making a slab by mixing concrete in a plastic bag. I wanted to see other ideas as I split the job into two halves. Thanks for this and good luck with the channel!
Thanks for the sub and the supportive comment. Congrats on the concrete bag mixing video.
Great. Please post the name of that drill. I will get it.
The drill used to mix the concrete is described in the video description area.
Adorable ❤️
Thanks
Why not get a 55 gallon trash can and do 1/3 or so?
That might of been an option for mixing the concrete as well, thanks for the suggestion
What is "this" called?...so I can go get me one lol. Thank you...
By the way she is the cutest little thing🤔🤗🤩😍👍
Check description
Thanks bro...
Welcome
Thanks 😂😂
Little gal is Awesome haha
she was big help with the concrete patio install project
150 bags? You don't have a Home Depot rental near you where you could pick up an actual cement mixer?
cement mixer is an option for sure
Well, she's adorable :)
Best helper around!
The fastest and easiest way to mix concrete by hand is using a steelemixer.com It will mix a bag of concrete without power in less than 40 sec and its supper easy to use! Go check it out!
Cute 🥰
thanks and hope your concrete project goes smoothly
We use cement mixers
Fyi Not great for a tall person. I'm 6,2
I was arch over 3 bags in and my back starting to act up
Ya mixing concrete is rough but I thought using the concrete mixing drill was a good approach in this situation. Ideally I would have preferred premixed delivered concrete but that not being an option I felt using the drill was the fastest way to mix the bagged concrete.
put height beneath the bucket. that solved it for me. or you can spread your legs a bit
It would have been helpful to tell people what "THIS THING" is and where we could get one.
See the video description area
🤗
Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute! :-)
Thank for watching, Have you mixed concrete like this before?
@@MrKistel I will do it soon ... :-)
Renting an electric 2 bag mixer from a big box would have saved your back.
Perhaps but I think concrete mixers work better when work with a team as opposed to a one man show.
bravo. Get the barbed wire up for those pre school boys.
