  • With the rise of cases involving irate public bus commuters venting their frustrations on bus captains for driving too slowly, I feel that it is time to shed some light on the most likely reason your bus is crawling at a snail's pace, and no, it's not the bus captain's fault.

    I travel to school on the same bus everyday and I've seen like 5 times in last 2 years of commuters being angry at bus captains for being super slow. The only times bus drives fast is during peak hour because many passengers and their time is well scheduled
    edit: I feel like this video should be shown on tv or something just to let people know since I realized most of the time it's boomers who complain this situation

    Basically right when the bus captain is too early and I’m the only one on the bus, I actually would encourage the bus captain to drive a little slower. The reason is that I understand the bus captain and I know that if he or she is too early maybe he or she may kena by the OCC. But also, if he or she is late, then the BC Chiong, it is okay for me. If BC late I won’t say anything, because I cannot do anything about the BC being late, but if BC early, I will be fine with the BC driving slow. Once, my 16M bunched with the 16 infront and I asked the BC to drive slower, since I was not in a rush. And he did.

    The distance between bus could be shorter if more buses are employed at one go for the same route. This will minimise the uniform time for bus travel . So it's the system at fault when you do not employ enough bus on the route . SG in the nut shell are always good looking on paper but rather rubbish in practice.

    • @transitevolution
      @transitevolution 4 года назад +1

      The distances between the buses cannot be too short. This is because buses tend to bunch together. Rather than minimising the uniform time, having too many buses only results in traffic jams and like 5 buses coming at the same time after a 10 minute of nothingness. So yes, while your suggestion is "good looking on paper", it is "rather rubbish in practice".

    In the Australian city of Perth, we have what is known as timed stops where buses may need to stop for a certain period of time during the route if they arrived at that stop too early. The driver can see what stop and the stop after will be bus be at on the Electronic Ticketing Information Machine similar to the one at 0:46 but has the capability to print out paper tickets or top-up SmartRider which is the smart card we use.

To me, it's really a tiring job and everyday new challenges. We should really appreciate other careers rather than what we are doing, especially those who are in the public transportation industry. They not only work to put food on the table but with the responsibility to bring everyone to where they want to go safely. Thank you to all the public transport captains. And lastly, I love trains! Whenever the bus cannot come on time, it had made me feel so annoyed that I threw a few meltdowns next to a lady with a male child! I then realised that I didn't want to cause trouble to the others waiting in line for bus service 66. It all boils down to inconsistencies. If they're as consistent and on time like MRTs, lesser people would complain. It's the painful slow-moving buses, coupled with buses that are way too earlier than their scheduled timings, as well as the OFTEN doubling or tripling of the same buses arriving at the SAME time that really pisses people off. And if the planners can ONLY blame traffic situations, they are TERRIBLE planners in the first place! So, yes, I do agree that the drivers are not really the ones at fault here. IT'S THE PLANNERS who are BEHIND it all. Blame them... and more importantly, they ought to face severe consequences or nothing will improve.

      No, the bus company simply wants to have people who want to take a bus to have a better experience in the sense that they arrive in a more steady fashion instead of (later down the route) 2 or 3 buses at the same stop, while the 2 behind might be (officially) scheduled to arrive 10 and 20 minutes later than the very first one at the same stop.
      From what I can tell (we basically have the same system in The Netherlands though our bus transportation company we have now (EBS) doesn't adhere to it this strict like Arriva used to do) it is done so that buses on the same route with the same destination who used to skip stops when there were no passengers wanting to get on or off the bus will not be superearly near the busstops more at the end of the route, causing people who expect a bus at, let's say 11:20 to miss it because in the 10 minute time window that they expected to be on time waiting for it, the bus had already departed.
      Funny enough, I've had these kind of experiences a couple of times with EBS as well (though people thankfully do not swear at the driver) and timed fast driving drivers (not unsafe fast, but just with more speed) and the really relaxed driving ones, and I turned up on my destination at the exact same time.
      It's mostly a matter of perception: not having to brake or come to a complete standstill at some junctions but due to the low speed being able to drive up to them and the driver having enough time to watch for oncoming traffic and then being able to drive through without stopping buys the same amount of time when the driver is driving fast.
      (By the way, some of the traffic lights that have a preference module for giving public transportation vehicles a green light upon nearing them will also refuse the green light when the bus is way to early and slow it down that way.)

    Not 100% true though, I was on 1 bus service (not going to sabo in case the authority kapo kia see until) just not too long ago during weekday afternoon peak period and the driver just floor it (every shiok I like) even though the earlier bus leave the interchange around 5 mins ago. Normally waiting time, is around 10-15 mins.

    I’ve heard from BC that LTA deduct about $100 for not complying even when they earn so little. The Habitats so long, got more friction between the ground and the wheels which caused it to be later and LTA also don’t want do anything like five more time? Anyways Great Video :)

    Bus timings are the most inaccurate at the interchange or first couple of stops. The bus apps' can never predict the bus departure or arrival times at these locations. Perhaps Lta should manage that too. Wonder what traffic condition is holding the buses up at the interchanges.

      There was this particular journey I took in a Mercedes oh series bus late night around 10pm back in 2007. The service was 61 and I took it from Queenstown to bukitbatok East Ave 6. At the beginning the bus was moving normally however one by one passengers aligted at their bus stops. Then the bus entered the empty Holland road, ulu pandan road with just me another passenger and the driver. This particular driver had another bus in front stuck at a traffic light. He pulled up along it on the middle Lane which is rare in Singapore. I knew he was planning to overtake the other bus upon green light but that wasn't just it,he absolutely floored the bus easily getting to 90+kmph! There was something wrong with the speed governor in this bus as we were overtaking every other car even those in the right lane. In fact the late night meant no one flagged down the bus till bukit timah road! However after bukit timah till my bus stop at bukitbatok East Ave 6 he moved slowly maybe because there was another 61 bus in front and guess what he stopped at my stop for a considerate amount of time after I got down. Also I was the last passenger on board. This was the fastest I have been on a Singapore public bus and yaa back then at least some buses didn't have speed governors! 😊

    No, I'am from Johor Bahru, Malaysia, please don't blame the staff working in all the Singapore Bus Service system, while so far they have done quite good services with their accurate timing through a long route, it's very good and better compare to the Rapid - KL buses very lousy and have to wait so long and not even enter the residential area where there are a lot and so crowded of passenger every morning waiting for buses, in KL area, the last bus services at residential area will be ended at 9.30 pm, at bandar seri permaisuri, KL, is not like in Singapore bus 334 jurong east will end up to 01.10 am or others 00.05 - 00.45 - 00.50, even in Johor Bahru - SBS 170 will end at 00.30 am, well done and congratulation to all the Singapore - SBS - TIBs - SMRT, thank you! Majulah Singapura!

    • @glitchFan2428

    • @gertrudeperkins9468
      @gertrudeperkins9468 4 года назад

      glitchFan2428 poor, i don’t think so. The bus companies are running the routes using mostly taxpayers funded buses (yes, the government buys buses and gives it to them) and pocketing the profits.

    • @glitchFan2428
      @glitchFan2428  4 года назад +1

      Oh, I didn't mean financially poor, what I meant was that they are subjected to widespread scrutiny by the transport authority and are expected to follow every order blindly without any protest, even when their operational expertise trumps that of the authority.

    • @garfieldandfriends1
      @garfieldandfriends1 4 года назад

      I don't think so. If you think about it, bus services that can go faster will reduce the number of buses needed for the whole route at one time, hence saving manpower & money from being faster.
