This has become my favorite razor. This razor is expensive but it stands far above any razor in craftsmanship, design, and detail. You can tell this razor was designed by an enthusiast with a passion for the craft and hobby. This razor is unique and exceptional. We are lucky to have so many great artisans in wet shaving.
Thank you all for your hard work creating the Ambassador. I just received mine yesterday and had the first shave with it this morning. It was a great irritation free shave on setting one. The razor has just enough heft to easily slice through tougher whiskers combined with excellent knurling to provide a sure grip. What a wonderful experience!
Happy to hear :)
@@rexsupplyco as an update, this razor has grown on me over one month. Now I like it much better than I did at first. During this time I have also been shaving been shaving with the Tatara Masamune and Muramasa. The Muramasa is a completely different type of adjustable safety razor which I also like. As my DE shaving technique improves so does my appreciation for the Ambassador. Before Thanksgiving dinner I used the entire range of adjustability for a smooth, quick two pass shave. Works great. Looks great. Priced right. Get one.
Matt this is an amazing razor. I am new to wet shaving and really enjoy using the REX Ambassador. Thank you for making this razor in America well worth the cost. I look forward to seeing what other amazing American products you create. Thank you and great job to everyone on your team.
Jazz piano always makes shaving smoother
HI Matt.
I just got the Rex Ambassador a few days ago. First off, congratulations on designing and making such a fantastic razor. Just a bit of feedback.
This thing is SOOOO efficient but at the same time it isn’t harsh, even on the low numbers. I had it set on 2 on my first pass and then on my second turned it down to 1.5. On my last pass I turned it down to 1 and then turned it up slightly to 1 and a quarter. I didn’t want to try anything higher until I get more use with the Rex. But I was absolutely astonished at the efficiency of the Rex on the low numbers, so heaven knows what the Rex would be like on 6.
The next thing I noticed with the Rex was how easy it was to see and find the shaving angle, and by this I mean I was able to clearly see the prominent angled blade bar/guard in the mirror and this really helped me stay on the correct angle for an efficient shave, I've never used another razor that was as easy to keep on the correct shaving angle and also see the angle of the blade guard in the mirror.
Next on to the knurling on the handle. This blew me away. It was liking having velcro on my fingertips and on the handle. My hands were wet and soapy and this made absolutely no difference, the grip and also the beautifully machined knurling is exceptional. No other razor I have owned or held looks as stunning or has provided me with this level of grip.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the shaves I've had with the Rex, have been the closest shaves I've ever had, despite me using the lower numbers on the Rex Ambassador.
Well done Matt and all others involved in designing and making this beautiful, and stunning piece of shaving craftsmanship. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great job Matt. I love that you are bringing back pride and quality in a product made in the USA. I cant wait to get mine, I see it shipped today.
Sourced mine out here in Australia and cannot wait to get it and it is good to know that it is virtually hand made and coming from the US like my Dad always said buy American when you are buying tools and hence my decision to get one:-D
Amazing razor! I was used to Gillette Fatboys and thought they were the best. Vintage Gillettes are amazing but the Ambassador is on another level. It shaves so close and comfortably
Rinse well and dry before reassembly. While stainless steel won't rust, it does pit with a vengeance.
My favorite adjustable, vintage or modern. Just had my first shave with it. I have no words, it even made an easy job on my trouble spots. So glad I bought it.
Little tip, can keep a container of alcohol near the sink and after shaving and rinsing well can dip the head into the alcohol. Chases out the water :-)
Holy crap!! This guy owns razor emporium and rex supply co?
I am buying one. I have been looking for an old school adjustable on ebay, but this is Old School design, and all the features I have been looking for, but NEW!!!
Beautiful razor and my favourite for shaving.
Hi Mat got my Rex today. Didn’t have a shave for 10 days due to a hand injury. Used a new persona blade DR Harris soap Best shaver ever its a lovely precision tool love it.
Super razor Matt I am going to get one.
It's a very nice, will designed razor and I'm Glad to see it's a made in America product.
I just got the Rex ambassador it’s beauty
Well made
Thanks
how do you like the rex ambassador gonna get one my self
This is a fantastic razor. I love mine! Looks great and get a fantastic shave! I enjoy shaving with this. I use setting 3 and find it smooth yet aggressive. Design is simple and easy to use.
My mustache area is very sensitive when shaved against the grain. I use setting 6 going with the grain which removes most of the whiskers. Then set the razor on 1 against the grain for a BBS shave below my nose. The rest, cheeks, neck is set on 3.
This is my daily driver and look forward to using it every day! Great job!!!
Congratulations, Matt! You guys obviously worked really hard to bring this to us. Many thanks and all the best!
Matt, got my Ambassador today, love the razor and exceeds expectations.
Eric Wormstead JR only time I would buy this is if I sell all my current razos . I can’t see myself spending $200 + on a razor. I can’t see myself selling my FatBoy, Slim, BlackBeauty, or Variant plus all my other razors just to get this. Don’t get me wrong it’s a beautiful razor it’s just too expensive for me. And I don’t understand how people would buy The Rex Ambassador and have a bunch of other razors. I can see if they have the Rex along with 2-3 other razors, but having it thrown in a rotation with 20 other razors is a waste. If I bought it , it would be my daily driver. And like I said earlier, if I had to pick two or three other razors to keep along side the REX I’d choose my.....
1964 Slim Adjustable
Muhle R-41
And Either my 1959 FatBoy for Collection Purposes or my RazoRock SLOC
@@magnoliamike I did sell my Fatboy, variant and fine marvel for it.
Eric Wormstead JR lol what are the odds?! Smart guy
That is my future razor, such a beautiful razor!
That is hella expensive.
Very nice razor! I think they did good job. It is pricey but not overly pricey like Timeless or Rocnel razors. And I like the desin..it is more toolish like rather than jewelry.
I purchased my Ambassador as soon as it was avaliable and from my point of view is the best adjustable safety razor in the market. Now I am waiting for my Rockwell Model T ...... To be continued.
I can’t wait to have mine! Should be delivered today!!!!!! You’re killing it, Matt!
Thank you very much for your job. the razor is amazing and funny
I’ve got one on my Father’s Day wish list. 🤞🏽
arrived today ... beautiful design and materials at the top, live is more beautiful
Looks like a winner to me. Adjustables is all I use and really enjoy them. All the best!
Same.
Hi Matt.
I’ve had my Rex for a week now and have used it every day.
The build quality of this razor is second to none!
Only problem is the I have cut myself every shave that I’ve had,
I’ve never used a styptic pencil as much as with this razor.
And that’s on setting 2.
I’ve used the R41 and no end of other aggressive razors and never had a problem.
So the jury is still out on this one.
I will give it another week and see how it goes but if I keep getting nicks I will probably sell it on.
Take care Matt.
How did it go
A beautiful razor. Thank you.
Hello Matt, In an earlier video, you explained how razors made of cast metal (modern or vintage) are brittle and trying to repair a component like say a tooth with a pair of pliers, often lead to the tooth shearing off. This is a common problem in terms of repair and maintenance with such razors. On the other hand, vintage razors made from stamped parts from sheet metal can be bent and are much more durable. This you say is one of the reasons you like vintage razors, as like vintage cars, they can be repaired, replated and are very durable and can be used for a very very long time. So, you see where I am going right?? Which category does the ambassador razor belong to?? Is it made of materials that will allow it to be easily repaired, or parts replaced or replated....... etc, so that it is a razor that can last and be used for many generations. Do elaborate on the various types of metals used.
bumping up.
Going to grab one now!!!
Looks awesome, Matt! Congrats!
Fantastic product. Looking for a premium razor atm myself. My shortlist was a Delta echo new long comb, A Timeless and a Charcoal goods. The Charcoal is never in stock so thats probably out but The Rex has to be worth a closer look. Being in the UK I have to factor in postage and customs.
I received my shipping notification today!! Yeah baby!!
Roger Dodger! Shipping notification just came in less than an hour ago, so my Ambassador will be making it's way up to Palomar Mountain and will be in my hands any day now! After seeing this razor in person at the last Shave Convention in Pasadena I just HAD to pull the trigger in spite of recent vows to abstain from any new razor acquisitions. Matt and his crew have outdone themselves, and such a fine bunch of "regular" folks to deal with is VERY refreshing in this day of unfortunate mediocre and disappointing service and products.
Congratulations! Wait for postage and shave!
Can't wait to get mine!!
Бритва супер, спасибо ребята! Одна из лучших!
YIKES! That price is insane. For half the price, you can get a restored rhodium plated Gillette Slim Adjustable.
Congratulations! It looks fantastic!
#SOTD #RexAmbassador Razor w Feather Blade, @Phoenix_Shaving Cube Pre-Shave, Cider House 5 Soap & Aftershave, Semogue Brush, & Thayers WH. Shave of the day hell, Shave of the Year!
Matt, I just bought and received the Ambassador XL. I need a bit of help. I probably overdid the first couple of shaves and have some regrettable razor burn. I watched your video and searched some forums as to the correct way to find the sweet spot for the XL. It appears that you are almost at a 90 degree angle while shaving and some of the comments on the forums suggest i should start at a steep angle and ride the guard. I had been shaving at about a 30 degree angle at level 3. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I love this razor. What is the best way to clean this razor? I purchased it a copul of years ago, and it needs to be cleaned. I rinse and let it air dry, but it still needs some deep cleaning, white soap stains in the crevices. thank you
Hot waters dish detergent and an old toothbrush
Ordered mine yesterday...
Awesome,I want one.It looks like a retro version of the Gillette fat boy.
Nice looking razor! I wish it would click when adjusting.
Freek'n Awesome! Can't wait for mine to arrive 😉
Guess what arrived today (Sunday 9/24/17)?
#RexAmbassidor #17 is in the house!
2 Shaves in, great razor!
Great video Matt! Good luck with sales. I may decide to give one a shot down the line. Cheers!
I wonder how this compares to the Merkur Progress Adjustable Safety Razor ?
cant wait to get one
Hi Matt. Your Ambassador razor looks super nice and I enjoyed seeing you shave with it. Have you thought about a line of cases for it? The box you show is functional, but a custom case, box, or pouch would be a great addition. I wish you great success. I lean toward the vintage in my collection, but your adjustable is on the list. Thanks.
Todd F custom case coming down the pipeline. :)
I’d love a case for mine too!
it is a expensive one, but i did it and it is a very good razor !!!
Waiting for the envoy spotlight review....
I'm surprised you don't have a video for the accompanying case, or even a mention of it in this video. It looks like a nice case but for the price I would love to get a little more information.
Very nice! Bravo!!!
Mine comes tomorrow!!! I love the retro look of this razor. I think bc of you're knowledge and understanding of the market this is a near perfect razor. And in my opinion priced extremely well. The warranty is great too! Question though. Do you suggest any oil on the moving parts?
Fantastic job Matt.
Gonna treat myself to one of these (and the stand too) later in the year. Just got myself a restored and re-plated 1967 Gillette Slim adjustable, that I want to get some experience with first.
Wow love your channel this razor looks very nice but wow that price is really out of a lot of shavers league. I would have purchased it even if it was $100 but at $249 it’s just too much
HI i have to agree with you! fine looking razor well designed but out of my price range!
I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit bummed out it's not polished. That's one of the reasons I wanted it because it looked amazing at TBSW. Wish this was disclosed beforehand.... :/ I just hate to think somewhere down the line a polished version will release and will want to buy it again, but I'm still pretty excited about it.
86mdwolfie there is certainly a lot of polishing on these. They are not mirrors however. Let us know what you think when you receive it. Thx!
Only as a option as polished razors tend to be slippery. Razor Emporium (the parent site), does lots of custom restore and electroplating. I'm sure extra $$$ would get you any surface you would like. I wish I could afford it. I would trade my used once Merkur Vision in a second for it as I think it's too heavy and they sell for about $400 on ebay.
Jordon Berkove yeah maybe in the future I will get it done. It's still a beautiful looking razor. You should sell that bad boy, the last one sold for $265 on eBay. That's certainly enough monies to pick one up for yourself.
86mdwolfie we may offer a polishing service on these - but I really think the finish we came up with ("luster") is a great balance between satin and mirror. It's functional and beautiful. #1 thing we hear at Razor Emporium (when people get true mirror finished razors back) is that it's so nice they don't want to use it. Or they now see every flaw.
Update about changes to the Ambassador: damnfineshave.com/thread-rex-ambassador-update
This is way cool.
Hi. I shave only with shaving oil (no soap or foam or anything). Is this razor going to be suitable for me? Love your videos.
This razor truly looks amazing.
Will the matter of the dial being easily turned while shaving be addressed?
Potter tons already was in January. Any customers with original ones can contact us for a free swap.
RazorEmporium Nice work. :)
Is it possible to know what the first batch number was for the ones that were updated?
How is the irritation on it?? Using Karve plate A or B??
I don’t want to waste money and get irritation on skin?
Alan H
Really dumb question... Do you have to loosen the bottom knob when you adjust it like the old Gillette adjustables? Or can you just adjust it while it's all put together tight.
Ho acquistato il rasoio.. Posso evitare di smontarlo per pulire il rasoio?
Got my Shipping notification today! Is there any blade overhang on sides? It did not look like there was any overhang...big plus I must say if there is no blade overhang.
Is the razor blade supposed to “click” and lock into the posts before fastening down? I just got my P model and the blade doesn’t click into the posts.
Adjustable settings should be done in clicks as it can be easily moved while shaving.
You said everything laser engraved. That means the dot indicator is too?
No. That is milled and filled with enamel paint. Like a Gillette toggle.
@@rexsupplyco nice!! Asked this before I bought one. But thank you for the personal explanation.
Can you adjust on the fly? Or, must you stop, loosed up, adjust, tighten down like the Gillette Adjustibles?
Do the blade tabs stick out the sides, or is the blade completely covered?
I am really interested in buying this razor, however, I live in a hard water area and limescale is a problem. My worry is that I will not be able to stop build up of limescale where I can't clean it. Are there any plans to make the ambassador so it can be stripped down?
Awesome!
Make a video about nailbrushes...
Hey Matt, I got one of these via 'Beard and Blade' in Oz the other day. I had a question. I've mastered locking into the locator bars quite easily after a take or two but is it normal to hear a kind of crunching sound as the blade torques into the head? Kind of reminds me of some 'Bakelite' slant bars in that regard.
Apart from that, I had a really nice close shave with this puppy. even on 3 it's really quite efficient and lets you feel the blade without irritating the hell out of you. I found my go-to 'Nacet' blade works great.
Yes, normal. That’s what I have heard.
Is This all 316L Stainless Steel or are there parts of it that are Brass , "Chrome Plate" or Otherwise?
Nice looking de razor. Only downside is the short handle and very high price. Especially for export too EU. Customs likes USA packages. Another 80 euro import taxes.
Добрый день ещё до нового года заказывал с официального сайта два станка и две подставки 7.11.21 ничего до сих пор не пришло не знаю куда писать хотелось бы узнать судьбу заказа
Does the adjustable knob have a ratcheting mechanism? I've read some reviews saying that it can be changed accidentally whilst shaving?
Guy Fisher it does not. However we addressed this issue in January. Any razors made before N1 date code on the bottom can contact us for a free upgrade of the improved component. No accidental turning now.
Would please elaborate on what was changed to prevent the accidental turning?
Very Nice Razor Matt How Much ? Looks Good Quality
How aggressive is this razor at it's #6 setting compared to the Muhle R-41 or the Ikon Shavecraft Tech?
Ben Stern I really don't want to make comparisons with other razors because there is so much that goes into a shave. Give it a shot if you don't like it let us know. Thx!
The R41 and Ikon Tech rely on positive exposure, whereas the Ambassador will have much greater blade gap but lesser exposure. How you experience that will depend on your choice of angle but assuming it's something like my Gibbs and you shave at a normal angle you won't find it nearly as aggressive as the Tech.
Why not 18/10 stainless ?
Could you make the next version out of plastic? Maybe this will bring the price down so more people can afford it
😂
😂
Hey Mathew why is it called a Rex ambassador? I have just bought one yesterday so hurry up and send it to the gentleman’s groom room in Scotland ha ha
Zoom 111 REX is our company name. Ambassador is our first razor model. One of many models to come. We thought it could be an Ambassador into the shaving world - showing people what we are all about!
You might as well engrave my name on it for that much money...lol
It looks like a very awesome DE safety razor, but the price is to expensive. If the price would be 100 - 150$ I would be buy it immediately.
Merkur Progress adjustable $70-$100 Cdn depending on the shop ($98 Cdn fendrihan.ca), and no one would question the hierloom quality or longevity of that product regardless of material used, Rockwell 6S adjustable stainless steel $132 Cdn (next most expensive stainless adj. razor on fendrihan.ca) and you get extra adjustment plates with this razor so you actually get more steel then you do in the rex, yet the Rex Ambassador comes in at $335 Cdn (fendrihan.ca)... the lifetime warrenty and the number system are nice but not $200-$240 dollars nice ... hypothetically even if the mentioned Merkur only lasted 20yrs, you'd be pushing 80 before you'd have spent more then the upfront cost of this rex... I'm sorry but this price tag was not thought about very well and i'm not just gonna fan boy and blow smoke up your ass and dump praise on what I'm sure is an exceptional razor when it's way over priced... and yes this is overpriced ....
Ever wonder why there is no other American made adjustable razors in stainless steel? Because price IS the obstacle. Period. Comparing Zinc razors like the Merkur Progress to a Stainless Steel milled razor is like comparing a Kia to a BMW. Yes they both will shave you but many people care about quality. We have no problems selling them in fact we can barely keep them in stock. It's ok that it's not the razor for you.
@@RazorEmporium Everyone cares about quality and insinuating I or any other wet shaver who takes issue with your price point doesn't is both disingenuous and insulting. I never attacked the quality of the razor just what you deemed an acceptable "cost or price" for the quality with little to no explanation other then "stainless steel", "made in America", and "Modern manufacturing methods", it's an exsisting design so right there the R&D cost is going to start out low as its not a ground up build.
Also I did have a stainless razor mentioned in my first post the $132 Rockwell 6S 3pc. Adjustable. sure it's not a twist type adjustable but it is stainless so it wasnt just comparing Kia's to BMW's, I offered a quality non-stainless and a quality stainless razor for price comparisons both of wich the Rex was double the price of if not more.
So please help me understand where the high cost in your razor is, dont just come at me with "yes both will shave you but many people care about quality" or "it's ok if it's not the razor for you" stuff, and weather you're selling them good or not when you price a razor like this it opens the door for other companies to start doing the same and that's not where I want to see wet shaving go... becasue a company says stainless steel or made in (insert country), they can put the price through the roof.
So far what I can surmise is... Made in America using an exsisting design with some tweaks + Stainless steel = $335 Cdn becasue Matt and RE said so ... and lets be honest any manufacturing method you would have at your disposol every other company has at theirs as well if they choose to use it, unless you've come up with some proprietary machinary that you've desinged from the ground up...at least that would explain the high cost of the razor I sappose. anyways thanks for the first reply even if you sound like your insinuating I and other wet shavers are either to poor or or dont like quality enough to pay your price tag. Cheers
Kraftie you missed a key word.
Milled.
That means cut with a milling bit out of a block of solid stainless steel.
I’m not trying to be insulting - this is why text read on the Internet doesn’t convey emotion.
Rockwell is wonderful and certainly much better than cast zinc. But it is a molded product.
Best analogy is ice formed in an ice cube mold versus cut with a saw.
Cnc milling is tremendously more expensive on an order of magnitude. Your average Milled part is easily 10-20 times as expensive than a MIM (metal injection molded) part like the Rockwell base plates like 6s. Each part is cut 1 at a time and time is money in a machine shop.
This has to do with quality because a molded price can shatter and break, much like ice, if dropped. Things like threading don’t Have resolution / durability like Milled parts.
So on an adjustable with lots of threaded pieces and moving parts, molding isn’t possible.
Look at Rockwell’s model T - they couldn’t mold it they had to incorporate stamping and casting and milling and turning (lathe work) to achieve it. And it’s 3 different metals and plated in chrome. And it’s not that much less than the Ambassador. The parts are made in China too.
I hope this helps explain price point. It’s not an arbitrary number at all.
The other major factor is supply chain. We have the ability to wholesale the razor - and because of that it’s carried in 25 retail stores around the world. This in it self is helping to spread wet shaving to new markets and convert people away from cartridges.
And lastly there is a lifetime
Warranty. That means we stand behind it and will help to service it if ever needed from anywhere in the world- and yes we cover shipping expenses.
Thanks for the dialog and let me know
If I can clarify anything else.
Regards
Matt
AT Rex Supply Company: Are you going to make a comb style C18 style like my Mercur soon? Adjustable is cool, but total aggressive is for the real man's club only, no wet behind the ears hipsters need apply
because everyones faces/growth are the same. 🙄
I think your box is going to get pretty trashed up tossing it in your shave kit for travel..
Can i do layaway please
$249 whoa how can I buy it lol.
I really don't think any razor will be worth that amount but send me an Email would like more in-depth info about the razor
wow vewry nice but how about coming out with something more affordable. Like in the $30-60 dollar range.
What exactly are you looking for in a safety razor within that price range? There already is a nice array of options for those in the market wanting a low/med priced razor?
I guess noting. My fav razor are my Merkur 34c and my vintage Gillette adjustable s. It just shock me when I see a razor at that kind of price. at the end or the day it's just a razor to cut hair off. there are many fine razors that will do that and probably jst as comfortable at a fraction of the cost. this is just a status symbol. show off piece. for snobs totally ignoring the common working man.
I would 100% agree with the fact that there are PLENTY of razors, be it single edge, DE, and straights that are priced under or well below the price of the razor in this video. I'm not sure if you know that Matt (in the video) is Razor Emporium (website) and they offer many razors within the price range you mentioned. They have Parker, Merkur, Edwin Jagger, etc. I can't speak for Matt but I don't think they need more and more options that are already filling those areas of the safety razor market.
My first razor was a Merkur 34c and I loved it as well. I can recommend it for many with mild/medium beard growth or to many beginners. I will assume that you aren't new to shaving based on your comment but maybe you haven't perused the market of razors priced above $60. In my experience, I have tried razors between $10-$400 and your point can be made that they can all shave and get your face smooth. But it very difficult to try and justify that there will be the same amount of value within each razor across the market.
I can't really respond to your last two statements. In the end, if you enjoy shaving and enjoy the experimentation, you may find yourself trying a stainless steel razor and/or a razor that will be priced above $60. Just use what works for you regardless of what may be popular or unpopular. It would be the same advice I give to someone that might want to try this razor or one like it. They need not worry about buying it and being considered a snob even though they know there are less expensive razors.
I am not new to wet shaving. I am well aware of Matt and his business and am a subscriber to his channel and to his joint channel with Douglas Smythe. I guess snob might be a bit harsh. there is always be expensive lugger items available for sale in the world. I am happy with what i have. thanks I just find it almost laughable that someone would spend that kind of money on a razor.
surfzombie2 smiling and thinking of you while using my Rex Ambassador. 😏
Sorry but you proceed me out of the deal, I will only invest that kind of money in a product with similar resale value (Feather AS2D). $350AUD is astronomical for an undeveloped brand.
wow :-)
My 34C was the...#343,452,124,..I'm thrilled....you have just made a clone of the Merkur 34C...the most popular and widely used razor on the planet...SHAME!...lol...considering your 249 dollar price..I'll stick with the 34 C for 40 bucks
would love one, but you know... customs :(
Супер...дорого.
