    I wonder who the designers were. I feel like if you're going to market a range as Asian, you should probably hire an Asian designer and not just a token, but someone who actually has experience designing Asian wear.

      From what I can find, it’s an Asian staff member who works for asos who suggested and helped bring the range to life, but I agree with you, a panel of Asian opinions would have clearly shown this to be not nearly Asian or bridal enough 😅 x

    I agree that these outfits don't scream 'bridal' in Eastern or Western wear; they kind of read as 'fancy brunch' or maybe 'New Years/holiday'? I do like the combo of the yellow outfit and blue suit together though. You both look gorgeous! (I 10/10 would wear the suit if it were black)

    Not being Asian, I can’t really comment on this, but it’s kind of interesting that in trying to have an east-meets-west line of bridal clothing, they’ve achieved something that doesn’t read as a bride’s outfit in either the west or east… I think another commenter said they looked like wedding guest wear, which I agree with.
    Not hating on the clothes though! They are pretty, and I could see them easily worn in other contexts.

  • @MajesticJewnicorn

    I've spent many days in Green Street and Luton with Asian friends, helping them to pick wedding outfits. These outfits don't scream wedding or even socialising at home with a meal with extended family. Asian clothing is beautiful, intricate and totally worth a lot of money. Asos kind of missed the mark. A for effort, D for output. I get the feeling they were trying to go for fusion rather than authenticity. You're better off buying from authentic independent small Asian retailers than a global brand lacking experience.

  • @jcphelps7054
    @jcphelps7054 3 года назад +299

    not Asian so can't speak to that, but this seems like a department store using 'bridal' to mean 'wear as a wedding guest'. they're not designing for brides, they're designing for just a nice event (and by using that word as supposedly justifying a price hike)
    and it also seems like they're designing for 'fusion' or 'second- or third-gen' weddings where it's not as traditional

    • @hanamachii_
      @hanamachii_ 3 года назад +21

      yeah this is what I figured as well, none of it looks like bridal wear. it's more for guests or even for the bridal party if they do that sort of thing in their culture.
      Could even be for more of a blended wedding where the families are of different decent so they wanted to try a bit of fusion.

    Hey, South Asian here. These pants are usually called shararas or more recently palazzo pants and there are many iterations of it some old, some more recent. It used to be worn by mostly sikh and islami brides but now is in common fashion.
    Also, these seem like wedding guest attire for not the main wedding function but one of the barrage of pre-/post- wedding functions, e.g. the haldi or mehendi function.
    Might be good for just wearing to an indian party or puja though.

    Hey Shaaba, I absolutely love your videos and your brain logic. The only thing I would point out is that, it is probably worth making a distinction between what we expect garments to cost and what they actually cost to make when everyone involved is paid fairly. A blanket statement saying "tops are not worth £65" can be rephrased as "tops from unsustainable fast fashion retailers are not worth £65 if they are not following sustainable, fair trade practices". Just some friendly criticism here :)

    • @Graid
      @Graid 3 года назад +6

      Yes, I agree with this! A top like this would absolutely be worth at least £65 if it were actually being made by someone who was being paid fairly, as opposed to mass produced abroad in countries where wages are comparatively low.

    When I think of Asian bridal, I think of beautifully extravagant and over-the-top. If there is a way to cram in another bit of sparkle, it will be done. Colors will not be subtle. It's like the Met Gala for average people. This line comes off as a very white-washed version of that. Like vaguely Asian inspired. It seems to be created for people who want to show some of their heritage, but have zero connection to it. Or maybe for a white girl trying to impress her partner's parents that are from Southeast Asia without seeming like she's trying too hard.

  • @Victoriasm31
    @Victoriasm31 3 года назад +17

    The prices seem to be comparable with what you'd pay in Southall/Wembley etc., except there you would get beadwork and embroidery as well. This should be a lot cheaper because it's just a print.
    I would still go to a proper shop, because there's a lot more choice (plus supporting local/asian-owned businesses is always good), but I appreciate not everyone has that option.

    Like other people said, it seems like they’re designed more for guests at a wedding than actual brides… but that makes no sense to call it “bridal.” And I agree, the colors seem way off.

    I think it's fair to criticize companies for incorporating any design from marginalized people when the production is inauthentic to the culture they aim to represent. Companies should just hire Southeast Asian designers to begin with, or can donate a percentage of profit to serve that community. That's how you show the "appreciation" part in cultural appreciation. Just my two cents. Or is two pence? Amirite?

    in my experience, finding south asian clothing in the us depends on where you live. if you live in the sf bay area or a large metropolitan area it’s easy to find south asian clothing from small businesses owned by south asians who import them (which does make them way more expensive in my experience). but if you live somewhere where there isn’t a large south asian community, i’d imagine it would be very difficult to find desi clothing. it also depends on what kind of indian clothing you’re looking for. in my experience most places sell very fancy/wedding style clothing (which is kinda annoying for me cuz most of the time i’m looking for a more casual style lmao). if there’s an area with a lot of a certain kind of indian (e.g. tamilian, malyali) those are the kind of clothes you’ll find and those small stores. recently though, i know amazon has started to carry limited styles of indian brands like biba which is good.

    You should totally keep the trousers and skirt, you can always pair them with a solid color top! It's so bizarre that all three tops fit different though, and none of it says bridal wear to me. I'm not even sure it says "going to a wedding" at all! Maybe they'll take the feedback from their customers and try something new after this.

    It was great to see you do this video. I love some of the Asian styles and being non Asian and trans I don’t know a lot about the clothes. Would you do some videos on the clothing please. Those bridal photos are stunning ! I can’t wait to see what you will wear… hopefully you will post after your wedding.( Big please!!) . It was great to see Jaime off his chair, he is so tall! You are very pretty a perfect match.

    i remember going to my cousin's sikh wedding and her dress was astonishing! She shimmered every time she moved. So yeah i think you're right. Most of that stuff was more like what the wedding guests would wear. Genuinely surprised that they didn't have any red dresses.

    I am happy to see that they used brown model. I find the clothes more Asian inspired than Asian. I love the yellow set, the trousers really look lovely on you.

    4:07 honestly this looks a bit like my prom/graduation formal dress i got off of asos in 2017 (that was also the asos desing brand) that was 80 euros on sale, like the cut is pretty much the same except this has long sleeves and the colour and fabric are different. It feels like they just recylced the old design

    When it comes to the prices, I agree some items seem more expensive for what they are compared to the regular range (however of course as fast fashion they are way cheaper than should be if everyone was paid correctly etc, but I doubt that the more expensive prices here are to compensate the garment workers)
    However for the maxi dresses to me those prices seem reasonable and in line with what I’ve seen other maxi dresses marketed at

    I don't see the "bridal" in these either. Love the pink & yellow colours on you though! The first two tops reminded me of a puddle jumper kids swim vest 😅

    Can you do a video given ideas for westerners? I will ask once my friend for more info when she gives a dress code, but I would love suggestions, since even if western clothes would be okay. I definitely still don't have anything wedding guest appropriate.

    I love the concept, but the execution could've been better.
    But you still look so stunningly beautiful, and I'm actually a tiny lil bit upset that I'm not going to you're wedding, because you're both so sweet and you both look just so beautiful in those outfits!

    i loved pink one. the pattern is pretty :) maybe you can stich pink elastic to the back of the blouse, making it an elastic blouse instead of a zipper one.

    I often see Bollywood stores in mid size towns in the US. Our grocery store has little shops with Asian shoes and jewelry.

    Looking at the western style wedding dresses I get the feeling that their wedding dresses are very stripped back. If it wasn’t for the fact that those dresses are white I wouldn’t have associated them with bridal ( and again the prices seem high for what they are) I wonder if the Asian bridal is under the same guise, stripped down for the bride who wants to be more understated?

    • @madhurimak564
      @madhurimak564 2 года назад +1

      Yeah, but we don't DO understated in Indian weddings. There's at least gonna be an eye-catching color -Red or Green,say?Its also based on the region and the customs there, but the bride is always done up wearing gold jewelry and stuff so understated clothes......just really don't happen, not for the bride.

    Unsure if you guys know but clips of Jamie’s youtube videos and some photos were featured in a south indian movie. It’s called Thittam Irandu.
