You don't mind taking chances because of your mechanical prowess. I admire your tenacity in this regard. I hope that you will be successful with this one as well.
If you sold it for $8000 dollars you should make a few thousand plus on this rebuild. I did look up price for a used one without a rebuilt engine. Good watching your success. I have learned a lot over the past year or so watching you. God Bless you and yours.
Great video. You actually pressure washed it! Hopefully you keep doing that in the future. Here's a little tip; before removing spark plugs from ANY engine, blow air down the spark plug hole to get rid of any grit and dirt that might be there. Saves it from falling into the cylinder....and you don't want that!
He loves it alright, to bad he is not willing to improve himself making the same mistakes over and over again. The fact he revs a engine to the moon that has been sitting for 20+ years without oiling up first is just plain stupid. Besides if he took one hour a week to read some of the comments with decent honest tips he would do a lot better. I still watch once in a while because he amuses me.
I worked at a powersport dealership that sold CF Motto. After being there about 6 months I purchased a 2017 CF Motto 2 up ATV with a plow. I have never had an issue and works like a tank.
I love these videos. But it is so painful to watch the dirty motor just sitting there. Compare to James Condon who wipes everything with WD40. Different methods, but we'll still see a great running machine at the end.
My first thought was to get that air filter out, its clogged solid and the poor little thing cant breathe and its sucking oil up through the crankcase breather
When you first fired it up I thought it sounded like a rod knocking. With the tires worn like that you can bet it was rode hard and put away wet. Owned by someone who didn't care and beat the snot out of it. Can't wait to see it all back together and running.
Also,I have seen many many times where a clogged air filter will cause it to start drawing air from the crankcase vent! Instant oil burning when that happens!
I’m happy for myself now that we get to see the inside on part 2. I appreciate all that goes into fixing, sometimes they’re just so easy when he find something everybody else misses. Excited for part 2 or 3.😊😊
Judging by how worn the tires are he drove it on the road to get to the trails. That's probably all he did was drive it until it blew up. Then he'd do the cycle of getting another and driving it until it broke too.
I also see it is hard to clean underneath the rear bed of this machine. I have a utility machine with a tilt bed and everything is right there clean and to work on when the bed is up. I always use a garden hose to wet and get as much mud as I can off before I use the electric pressure washer to finish clean. Pressure washers can cut seals and bend radiator fins.
I appreciate seeing work performed on vehicles I have little experience with. I'm 67 years old and retired as a shop owner and professional mechanic. While trouble shooting involves the same procedures, fuel and ignition, verify timing etc. as the basics are the same, the vehicles are different. I owned a number of street bikes but working on them wasn't my thing. A few months ago, I bought a new 2023 "Great Blue" Suzuki King Quad 750. It now has a total of 3 miles on it. I installed all Warn winch, front plow mount and anything else was Warn. I enjoy watching as you possess a wealth of knowledge and experience on vehicles that I have little experience with.

We ride a shared trail six miles into our off-road cabin in Alaska. Many people have cabins spread out for many miles and other people fish and hunt off the trail. In 24 years the only machine I’ve seen burnt to the ground was a CF moto like this one. It was hard to recognize as even the rims were melted. I took a bunch of pictures and did some research to see the brand. The only machine I’ve towed out was an Arctic Cat. I’ve seen a few of all brands broke down. There probably were more Polaris machines broke down , but more than half the machines I see on the trail are Polaris.
You're certainly not afraid of getting right in there and finding out what the problem is. It's a good thing it kept smoking, cause that rod might not have lasted much longer.
BRAVO, you got it humming along with a few stumbles. Good looking UTV, guessing no money for payments, and less money for maintenance. Cheap yet surprisingly expensive. Low-end UTV, warranty 5 ft or 5 mins. You'd have made a great surgeon or dentist
An old timer friend of mine who was a power sports mechanic told me atv/utv owners were the worst when it came to maintenance of their machine. Oil never was changed, fittings never got grease.
Absolutely love the video Joe! I really enjoy all the details and your narrative. Loved watching you buy the new suv for your wife. Keep on crushing it!
CF Moto rod bearings. I wonder if those were going out as soon as it left the factory. Glad you made this video. I don’t think rod bearings should be shot on both cylinders this soon. The bike is not that old.
Whats up with yall calling any offroad machine a fucking bike? Does it have only two wheels and handle bars? Do you straddle it while riding? No, therefore its not a bike.
You're absolutely incorrect, with only 3,000 MI nothing the owner could have done would create a ring Gap like that. You can run it on one cylinder for 3000 mi and it wouldn't have a ring Gap like that, nearly a quarter inch. That was a disgruntled owner that spent $16,000, to need a partial engine rebuild do to lack of quality of control in the assembly. Dealership and manufacturer won't cover it, an owner not willing to pay 5K repair so they bailed. Those were cheap rings and that's the manufacturer's fault
I have a 2021, it pushes snow like a mother, they are quick, put a uni filter in it get a rng clutch kit, relocate the air box, I’m very interested in this one
While you were adjusting the rockers, it looked like the rocker arms were moving up and down on the shafts both sides. This would give one side of the valves more clearances on the side opposite the timing chain.
Enjoy your videos Joe. A trained ear could hear it rattling before the oil change mate Came through loud and clear on the audio when you test drive to. Oil change helped. After you found the timing chain loose was thinking that was the rattle..... BUT..... Bugger
I used to work for a company with lots of heavy equipment used for moving dirt. They did regular engine oil analysis and what they found was that oil that had high levels of silica (from dust) also had had high levels of compounds that make up the wear surfaces of the internal engine parts. Silica in the oil was coming from dust being sucked into combustion air either through or after the oil filter. After seeing the condition of the engine and air filter in this machine I would say dust and lack of maintenance ruined the engine. I would also think that the excess wear may be through out the engine not just in the rod bearing and rings. Might want to see what a new or used engine would cost.
They're ok usually. What you have to wonder is, has it had its initial services done, oil, spark plugs, valve settings, fluid checks and changes. Normal stuff. Lot of miles for a 22.. good luck.
Great content Joe. Unfortunately, when people know their toy is gonna get repossessed, they tend to beat the crap outta it. Good thing you now have an engine hoist.
Hey Joe have you ever added in marvel mystery oil with the motor oil? when you do oil filter and oil changes. on those types of engines with oil filters on them at all before as A motor oil treatment. Run that mixture in it until the second motor oil change. Cause a lot of times it's from lack of chemistry called changing the old burnt motor oil out with new motor oil when it's time to do so. So A mear suggestion is you can try that little trick tip to help flush out and clean up the inside internal engine parts to like sludge buildup.,or metal and metallic shavings and shard's of bits of metal.,or aluminum.,or Piston oil rings to.
Unlucky there Joe, as you say, it didn't have any of the telltale signs of play in the crank, wonder if the owner who had it repossessed stopped paying the premiums when it started losing power, anyway, look forward to the next episode of the rebuild...

I had a CFmoto 250cc scooter, it was basically a Honda Elite clone for the most part. Had a Mikuni carb, and the parts were not identical, but very similar to the Honda. It ran great.
I got 2021 zforce 800 trail with well over 5,000 miles on it,not a puff of smoke, not a drop of oil used between changes antifreeze always full,I will be purchasing another cfmoto in the future, by far the best I've owned, and I've had Polaris, kawasaki, and an honda, the honda is the only one that's still around, but I had to put an whole new rear-end into it to keep it around.
Hey Joe, you shouldn't use motorcycle oil on machines without a wet clutch. The engine isn't designed for it. It doesn't lubricate as well as regular oil with the moly additive.
2nd ring is made of a softer alloy than the top ring, oil ring wipers probably has a similar gap to second ring. Be sure to disassemble and clean lower case, replace or really flush well oil cooler if it has one.
Not immediately changing the oil was a strange move. Who knows what's in there. I worked at a car dealership and got access to a repo lot. There would be tags on them stating the crap the owner did before they came to be collected like draining the oil or removing parts. I ended up getting an amazing deal on a Suzuki vstrom which was a great bike.
So now you very we'll are looking at another complete teardown and rebuild job ahead of yourself now. Good 🤞 luck on getting it rebuilt.,or everything that's bad replaced and readjusted inside of that engine.
I had a 21 800 trail that dis the same after i rolled it over on its side. Those 800 engines will lose oil into intake if they roll. Cleaned my air filter system, changed plugs and she ran great again.
CF Moto is a great bargain machine, my friend has the same machine it is one snappy low end machine and very reliable. There's a couple things I don't like about it compared to my RZR 900, but not enough to not own one, especially with the new Z 10 coming out.
should check the wear on the oil control rings too, i bet they are wasted. I did hear the slop in the engine while you rode it, also check the rocker shaft clearance looked loose to me.
Ime betting pounds to peanuts that quad has been underwater. !! I think I would have started with a good pressure wash once you got the panels off. Great to see you did 👍 nice job. Listen again joe. In the video when your close in and listening with the camera to it idle you can hear a faint knocking. It's faint, but it's there. It was no surprise to me when the rod bearings were bsd cause I heard the knock in the front of the video
Depending on location, $16k is way over list. I bought my 22 800ex brand new for $12,500 out the door. Pretty good machines. Mines heavily modified from stock now lol
Your full of it 😂😂.unless they was like this guy that had this one and not change the oil or anything then ya it's going to happen it's not the engine's fault.
Excessive smoke/ burning oil smell from exhaust, badly worn/ hardened valve stem seals, worn oil scraper/ compression rings. Low compression check bent valves/ valve seats, I could hear the rod knock in the video at 6.00 when you revving it. As for the rod play, cheap chinese materials. My 2 cents, overall abuse and poor maintenance from looking at that air filter, Great video, look forward to the followup.

Listen again joe. In the video when your close in and listening with the camera to it idle you can hear a faint knocking. It's faint, but it's there. It was no surprise to me when the rod bearings were bsd cause I heard the knock in the front of the video
It's the rotax motor canam heads and cams will fit and you can do the canam big bore kit on them
Depending on location, $16k is way over list. I bought my 22 800ex brand new for $12,500 out the door. Pretty good machines. Mines heavily modified from stock now lol
I paid $9,100 out the door for my '22. It was a leftover in '23. It's been good so far.
Crazy how the smoke cleared up so much and the spark plug wasn't even attached 😮
Bummer. Amazing compression with those worn rings.
I’ve known 2 people who bought cfmoto and both motors had to be replaced at about this mileage. Good Luck
Your full of it 😂😂.unless they was like this guy that had this one and not change the oil or anything then ya it's going to happen it's not the engine's fault.
People dumb enough to spend that kind of money on a toy are dumb enough to never change the oil or filters.
@@tuberNunya yeah i gave a car. to someone and they never. changed the oil in over three year"s,
Oh great
How are the rings junk if over 200psi compression?
compression rings are fine ,but the oil control rings are worn out!!!
Pistons and rings are perfect.
