      I'm 68 and that was like us East-Coasters here in North-America mocking the Stones and how 'Poof' was easy to do in a great style that helped usher in Punk. England did fire a salvo back in the form of the Clash' 'London Calling' shortly after, but it was America's joke via the NYC Dolls, that help wake their youth up to the fraud, rock was becoming.

    I waited for this album in 1973! In the '70s Rock music was happening FAST. '69-Stooges, '70-Black Sabbath, '71-T.Rex, '72-Alice Cooper, '73-NYDolls. My first love was Metal/Hard Rock, but I checked it ALL out. I'm 62 now, and with RUclips l still check it ALL out.

      @Coogan Bull shite -they were a DIY band, that were getting away from Emerson, Lake & Palmer or the band Yes. NY Dolls the Stooges, the Ramones in 74. None of them were Punk because they came before, but they went to Europe, got Malcolm MacLaren (later manages the Sex Pistols) to be their manager, etc. They Are proto-Punk. Maybe you're more of an 80 GLAM (Gay LA Metal) fan, and want the Dolls as part of your lineage, but they just are not. Look at Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers, after the Dolls - very much Punk.

    @perryamberson 5 лет назад +16

    Watching this again just now, I saw Whispering Bob's "mock rock" comment in a different light. It doesn't seem to me he was being dismissive of them so much as he was letting the Dolls and the TV audience know that he "got the joke." I believe he sensed that they were using rock 'n' roll clichés simultaneously to mock the form and celebrate it. Or maybe I'm high.

    • @MrBullshed

      I still think he was serious. I don't think he got them at all. His comment suggested that they were a manufactured band but they weren't. What you saw was exactly what they were. A completely honest performance. This obviously became a manufactured model for bands like the Sweet, but the rawness of the sound and the underlying attitude became the foundation of punk, and I don't think Whispering Bob ever understood any of that.

    There is no doubt that Punk would have happened in the UK without this group. Unlike some other posts, I am sure Malcom Maclaran, the Sex Pistols manager and saw them In a concert in New York in the early 70s. Came back to the UK and wanted to form a band which replicated the NYDOLLS music.

      Apparently one night, just after the Pistols had signed to A&M records, "Whispering" Bob Harris went to the Speakeasy with a couple of music biz officials and a few long haired muso types, when who should turn up but Johnny Rotten and his entourage which included Sid Vicious and Jah Wobble, who were all slightly inebriated. it is alleged that Harris was approached first by Wobble who was a bit miffed that The Old Grey Whistle Test would not show the Pistols on their show, thus an argument ensued in which Sidney set about members of the Bob Harris crew, which resulted in one of his ((Harris) pals getting a bit roughed up and requiring medical attention. When a certain Malcolm McClaren the pistols manager, was questioned by the press after said incident, he famously retorted ;"What can I say-boys will be boys..." The incident led to the Pistols being sacked from A&M records after only a week.
