Titanium is significantly less dense than steel, almost half the density. In areospace, it's used for its strength to weight ratio. In watch making on the other hand, it's used for its lightness and corrosion resistance. I would assume that when it comes to stationery, it's used for its lightness too, and maybe to prevent galling with the internals. Now, someone may argue that you could get a light material out of a fountain pen by using aluminium, but it has a vastly different scratch resistance and isn't nearly as durable. Comparing to plastic, the properties of a metal are significantly different and inferior in most cases. Additionally, some people prefer the 'cold' feel of metal compared to resin/plastic which has different thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity. When Peter says "I don't understand why anyone would make a fountain pen out of titanium", I think he's being quite short sighted and ignoring all of these material properties, let alone the fit and finish you can get out of titanium.
Jesse addiction is an over used word. Passion can be defined as someone liking or desire of a subject or object. And seeing as this is a hobby and a job I would argue that he is very passionate about what he does. Addiction can be defined as a physical psychological dependence on a substance that saying someone is physically dependent may mean their unwell. So Jesse before you make an argument online do your own research to validate your claim.
Ever since I subbed to your channel 50 years ago Peter, I always hit the like button during the ad without seeing one second of any of your uploads. Never regretted it
My friend found you a couple years ago and we really enjoyed watching your videos together. My dear friend passed away yesterday. I wanna let you know that your videos brought her joy. And now I can enjoy watching while also remembering her.
I can totally relate to your pen addiction. I have lots of pens and since watching your videos I've already purchased two fountain pens and well, I WANT MORE! MORE, MORE, MORE. **sigh** I'm a simple man with a simple and insatiatable need. Great video Peter! Bad "fountain pen" Lamy!
You need your own podcast, I’d pay money to hear you blab about anything and everything. You’re videos are always great, keep up the hard work Peter. Thank you for blessing our ears and eyes
The Lamy CP1 is not a titanium fountain pen, never was, many websites and reviews claim it to be but if you go to their official website there's no mention of this material in the specs. The converter used is also mentioned, there are 2 of them being the Z 27 for the CP 1, the Z 28 (with the red end is for the Safaris). The grip section , yes its cheap plastic but sturdy, not for everyone. If you love timeless minimalistic design this one's exceptional, but if you want writing comfort try another pen. .......beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... CP stands for cylindrical pen number 1, from the same designer of the iconic Lamy 2000.
"guy gets scammed and continues to complain about it for the entire video" I don't think lamy ever claimed this had any titanium in it, nor have I seen it sold as "titanium" I've had one of these for about 6 years now, and it's still going strong. I use the black PVD EF nib, despite being left handed I think this works much better than the LH nib.
Peter, I cannot draw to save my life. My hand writing isn’t the best either. After watching your videos over the past month I never wanted a pen more in my life ! Your videos keep me calm and it’s so interesting watching you doodle! I could watch and listen to your commentary! For hours! Thanks for being u! Can’t wait for the next !
We want three things. 1) Peter to talk and draw, which technically is two things right there. 3) Honesty. You give us all three, so I am HAPPY!!!! I will not purchase this LAMY pen. But I will watch this review again.
Daamnnn, I am impressed Peter! My respect for you has grown even more! Needless to say this video is on another level. You have elevated the standard of quality here yeah!
Jesus, that art is mesmerising. I am unsure if I'm sold on the pen yet, but that sketch does make me want to pick up my Safari and try to achieve say 10 per cent of what you did in the video. Love it.
I like the watch. Gives off a "Universal-World-Wide-Time-Clock" feel like, yeah it might be 5pm here but its 3am somewhere else you know. And with the 5 being around where the 3 normally is, you could imagine another 12 being where the 6 normally goes. So then the clock is a 24 hour clock. And the multiple hands on it show you the time in different locations. The end result gave me a David Bowie - Time Traveler feel and that was okay with me. Sorry the pen was a disappointment. On a happier note, you can now look at the pens you like with more appreciation. Its like having a week of rainy days so you can appreciate the clear sunny day even more when it comes. Thanks for being you Peter.
Well Peter, pen aside. This has to be one of my favourite drawings of yours. I can feel the frustration and emotion portrayed. Hope you feel better. We are all feeling some kind of stress and feeling of isolation at this time. Keep your eye on the horizon, things will get better
The editing, music, and art direction on this video are on a TOTALLY different level than what I'm used to. It's crazy good! And, while you didn't like the pen, I did actually really like drawing you made with it.
I'm currently sitting at home with a broken leg. Surgeons had to screw in several titanium rods into my femur to reattach the bone to the joint and they inserted a rod inside the full length of my femur. When I'm dead I want someone to take the titanium rods and make some pens out of them. You're welcome.
Oooh, ahhh Dang the close up on the nib satisfies Luxury bites though I like that your pen reviews are simultaneously a critique of consumerism with a heaping side of drawing If you could have a pen made out of any material no matter how rare/unrealistic/impossible what would you pick?
Thank you for this video, Peter. I've noticed in many areas, not just pens, "titanium" claims are all the rage, especially in Chinese-made stuff. Someone figured out Americans (myself included) go nuts for anything that is made of titanium. Sadly, a huge number of products are either barely made with titanium or are outright fraudulent in their product postings. I've seen this with lots of handheld products (pens, pocket knives, flashlights, etc.). Also, Amazon product postings seem to be getting generally less reliable, with vendors posting stuff that's not what's described and overpriced. I recently found some fountain pens by other manufacturers being sold much higher on Amazon than if you went to a specialty pen sales site. To make matters worse, there seem to be a lot of Chinese knockoff products in this area, though so far on Amazon I see those as clearly branded Jin Hao or some such and not actually counterfeiting the original brand name. Yet.
Now.... I'm frustrated!! Dam you Lamy! I tune into Peter for another soothing and awe inspiring getaway from this frustrating time we are all in. Dam you Lamy!
Hit the hammer on the nail with the “fine line between looking minimalist and boring”. Got mine on Amazon and as soon as I took it out of the box my first impression was that it felt sooo cheap. When I tap on it with my fingernail, it sounds like aluminum (though might be something else), but when I buy a product I expect the designers to make the end result presentable, regardless of the material used. It looks like a typical disposable plastic pen. The feel is slightly different from plastic but on the same level of cheapness. Although there can be plastic that can feel premium. I would have probably kept it if it was like $20 but for almost $50, it’s going back. The least they could have done was include a converter. Mine didn’t even come with a cartridge (which was advertised). I was expecting something that had Quality in the feel and materials, to reflect the price tag. The holes around the top also contributed to the cheap feel. I mean it’s an ok looking pen, just feels massively overpriced. I wanted an upgrade from Black Forest, but instead I got a downgrade with this featherweight. Black Forest weighs just right and feels unmistakably metal. I might get the “carbon fiber” version, but I wanted to try another brand. I guess I’ll try another Lamy because I couldn’t return z28 converter that I bought with it. Z28 isn’t compatible by the way, couldn’t find info and after searching and searching, some website said that it was compatible. But it doesn’t fit because it has two protruding spikes on the sides.
They have two type of converter for different pens. I think You need the lamy Z27 converter to this fountain pen. Anywasy it was good to hear your voice again! Have a nice day!
I gotta be honest. I didn't like the Lamy 2000 design until I got one for a steal. I never thought it looked good in pictures, but something about it in person changed my mind on it. See if you can't get a chance to hold one in person, might change your mind.
Rather surprised that you had a review where you did not like a pen! I do like that you did not like it and you gave excellent reasons as to WHY! Thanks Peter Be safe and take care!
Can totally relate to the pen obsession 🤣🖋️ Thanks for the commentary & critique! It shows, once again, that even though the pen may be substandard, your incredible drawing skills still shine through! Be well 💜
I don't know why it didn't work for you, but all Lamy convertors- Z24, Z26 and Z28 fit in the CP1. I regularly swap them between my Lamy Al star, Safari and CP1
Great throughout review 👏, and the drawing does reflect your review also. I was thinking of purchasing this exact pen (no titanium) to replace my backup pen "Lamy 2000". The "Lamy 2000" was my daily driver for 4 years, and it at the 4th year it developed this weird tiny leakage at the retainier clip when written which I couldn't fix and totally annoying. So the "Lamy 2000" then became the backup to the new daily driver the "Dialog 3" which I totally 💘. Anyway, after saw this fine review I concluded that this pen is perfectly fit as a BACKUP pen, or a pen that I wouldn't mind lending to someone to use instead of the "Dialog 3" 🙄 .
Was it bought from Amazon or the lamy page itself? Because the lamy writing on the lid of the pen didn't seem like the original slightly tilted logo of the brand which I always saw on every lamy pen until now but I only ever swa the generic ones for school writing and stuff I just thought that it was weird to see lamy written in that way on the pen.. So maybe it's a fake? That would also explain why the converters didn't work with it that worked with the other ones?
For modern pens I've never gotten into ..I guess European made pens....except Rotring but that's Japanese now. All of mine are from Asia. PENBBS is probably my favorite maker. I think it's completely ridiculous to have to order a converter separately, especially for that price point. Just make it international size. idk, I just have never been impressed with the styles offered. My delimma now, with the beautiful and colorful acrylic bodies available, is matching the right ink with the pen color. Then I found Kiwi Ink company! They do custom ink color matching as well as create TreColori that has all the things!! Inks with your choice sheen, shimmer, and ink color. They'll make combinations to your liking. Ordered a few. We live in amazing times. :)
Any chance of another accordion sketchbook Video? No pressure obviously all your videos are great but I was particularly enjoying those. Ps while I'm here are there any plans for another line almanac?
I am new subscriber, I just feel I have seen you on TV or are you an actor somewhere... I don't know I felt I have seen you before .... And your style of drawing is sooooo unique, so instinctive... I was an on instinct doodler I do it less now... But I loved watching your art. Great content here Peter!
I found one of these this week in a vintage/antique store, 5 bucks, mint condition, appears to have never been used. It has a very slight hard start, but then writes perfect. I have a couple 2000s, this pen is pretty close to as smooth as they are. I wouldn’t pay full price for it, but for $5, I think I got a good deal.
Am I the only one who wants a copy of that drawing done in the video to hang on my wall? As much as I enjoyed the pen review, this drawing caught my attention more than anything else, and made me sad when I realized I could never have it. Regardless, I enjoyed the review, Peter, and was glad to know the pen wasn't up to snuff.
Yep... I agree with you Peter. Some of the newer Lamy pens are not worth the money. I have a Lamy Safari that I bought in 1978 for about $8.00 that works perfect every time. Also one of my newer favorite pens, a Jinhao 51a cost $1.76 with free shipping. A good pen does not have to cost an arm and a leg.
That’s actually my favorite day to day pen, it’s design is minimal and matte black and it’s great for writing. I’m sorry you didn’t like it, I bought mine from jetpens and it came with a piston
lamy has two converters the black one that works for all lamy pens and the red one thats just for the safaris and al-star line. The CP1 is pretty minimal/ boring but people like it because of how slim it is also its grip is round unlike the triangle grip in the safaris and al-stars that some people complain about and its more "professional" looking. All in all its nothing ground breaking they all use the same swappable nibs and its not inherently better than the al-star but its an alternative design (albeit at a higher cost) that some people will prefer and others wont.
Love the drawing Peter, sorry the pen has got you frustrated, and sorry life in general has, I get how you're feeling. But these times are temporary and they will pass, that's what I keep telling myself anyways. Nice to see you draw as always, keep doing you. P.S. did you do the background music to this vid, if so big fan, also love to see your music progressing
........honesty is best, and IN all said honesty,.......... Peter does not enjoy Drawing with this instrument. thank you dear Sir. PEACE , and God bless .
Could it possibly be a supply chain issue? Having to use lesser-grade manufacturing materials, due to all kinds of lock-down measures? Maybe even a turn-over in the management or assembly line. Perhaps costs of manufacturing under Covid conditions kept them from sending the typical extras, like converters, or better quality ink.
peter: that's one of the squared-off lamy nibs, which means it has a sweet spot! if the pen stops working, try looking closely at the nib and seeing if you're rotating it while drawing, and rotate it back so the whole side of the square is touching the paper.
i know this because i have a lamy 2000 and it also has a squared off nib PS lamy 2000's are amazing in person, they're really a pleasure to use (once you figure out how to hold the pen straight) ball-tip nibs are kinda like training wheels when compared to squared-off nibs. it's a bit harder to use consistently but it provides a bit more character in your writing. it's like a stub/italic nib, except without the rough edges.
I usually like your reviews, but as someone who really likes this pen I can't help but feel like your frustration could have been mostly avoided by waiting not even 5 minutes before buying... Lamy generally doesn't ship with converters as far as I know, and you should never expect a pen to ship with one unless it is stated in the product description. Lamy converters aren't that expensive, you could have just bought one to go with it. Also, Lamy doesn't use standard international cartridges. This is in my opinion the first thing you should look for when buying a pen, to avoid situations like these. If you plan to use converters and it doesn't come with one, always check where you can get compatible converters. Lamy has two differnt types of converter. The one for the safari has two small extrusions that help hold it in place. These don't fit in the slim design of the cp-1, so there's another converter that doesn't have them. I've heard that some people made the Safari converter fit by cutting of the extrusions, so that's also an option. Please, keep these things in mind for the future - it will save you a lot of frustration.
Such an amazing voice. I got a pen very similar to yous here and I pretty much said the same things. Keep up the amazing art you make. Take care and stay safe.
Titanium is very lightweight for its strength, hence why it is also used on many high-end folding knife scales. The lacquer is aesthetically pleasing to me and many others. This sort of thing is really very subjective, so to each their own. Hope this was helpful.
Ya know I'm way too poor to buy any pens, but I'm high key addicted to pen reviews, and peters commentary. peter I hope you have a good week
Try Jinhao swan or shark pens. You can get a dozen in a plastic carry case for $18 USD.
I will mail you a bic
some Chinese pens can be found for £2
I adore the results of your frustration if it’s any consolation.
For real this picture was beautiful!
I agree
I was just thinking the same thing!! what a cool drawing! maybe Peter should Draw more often with pens he's not enjoying?
titanium is only functionally different in fountain pen nibs because the strength of the metal allows for thinner and more flexible nibs
When Peter says "I don't understand why anyone would make a fountain pen out of titanium", I think he's being quite short sighted and ignoring all of these material properties, let alone the fit and finish you can get out of titanium.
you’ve made peter angry, so you’ve made me angry mr.lamy
He just rips into these pens man, I wouldn't want to make him mad. That'd be a real ass chewing..
Brilliant commentary and cinematography!
There’s always one more pen, Peter. I don’t know if it ever ends...
Damn, this is a sexy opening for a pen
I live vicariously through your pen reviews, please continue
Some older pens have boxes they came in that are worth upwards of $200 just because of how valuable having the whole "package" is.

Absolutely seething Lamy review. How will they recover! ... Devastating.
Hi Peter, I sold those in a pen shop in the UK. The Lamy CP1 056 is steel not titanium. The listing on ebay was incorrect.
It is actually brass (+oxide titanium coating).

Really like the idea of adding another clock hand, wonder what that concept would look like if you made a drawing with a pen you actually like
Am I the only one who wants a copy of that drawing done in the video to hang on my wall? As much as I enjoyed the pen review, this drawing caught my attention more than anything else, and made me sad when I realized I could never have it. Regardless, I enjoyed the review, Peter, and was glad to know the pen wasn't up to snuff.
Peter, you should be the 'new' Bob Ross. Just a canvas, your doodles and your voice.
Great video work!
Titanium Oxide is a pigment that can be used to produce black (or white) paint. This pen has a titanium oxide coating.
The music made this video! Groovyyyyy
Great review. . ."Why make a pen out of titanium only to paint it so you cannot see or feel it." That is one should be obvious but brilliant question!
I’m sure one of my jock villagers would appreciate a strong, titanium pen.
P.s. I love a good face sculpture
Wheres the minecraft content?!?!? Love ya peter!!!!
I 2nd that question
Other channel?
I am korean. 🇰🇷Thank you for the helpful video😍
Yeah I’m white
Love the drawing Peter, sorry the pen has got you frustrated, and sorry life in general has, I get how you're feeling. But these times are temporary and they will pass, that's what I keep telling myself anyways. Nice to see you draw as always, keep doing you.
P.S. did you do the background music to this vid, if so big fan, also love to see your music progressing
This video in it self is a work of art.
........honesty is best, and IN all said honesty,..........
Perhaps costs of manufacturing under Covid conditions kept them from sending the typical extras, like converters, or better quality ink.
peter: that's one of the squared-off lamy nibs, which means it has a sweet spot!
if the pen stops working, try looking closely at the nib and seeing if you're rotating it while drawing, and rotate it back so the whole side of the square is touching the paper.
i know this because i have a lamy 2000 and it also has a squared off nib
PS lamy 2000's are amazing in person, they're really a pleasure to use (once you figure out how to hold the pen straight)
ball-tip nibs are kinda like training wheels when compared to squared-off nibs. it's a bit harder to use consistently but it provides a bit more character in your writing. it's like a stub/italic nib, except without the rough edges.
that intro was beautiful
Thank you for another excellent video, Peter! ♥
Please, keep these things in mind for the future - it will save you a lot of frustration.
those close ups were mesmerizing
I really love that drawing. Even frustrated, you come through with great art. Wish I could do that.
have no interest in buying pens but your videos are so entertaining
Drawing looks great!
Ooooooh baby that intro! Pretty classy guy
Yes it is very subjective
what is the background music?!! omg it’s smooth.
