I've really taken to this bloke, love that what you see is what you get. He's not trying to impress anyone, shoots his videos in his kitchen and he's got a lovely dry sense of humour, so you not quite sure if it's meant to be funny but it is. He's certainly a little off beat which makes his videos a pleasure to watch. Thanks for being real Peter.

The Muji rubber spot is intended for a sticker. Some Muji fountain pens come with dot stickers. I marked my Muji pen with a white dot sticker (not from Muji) that I colored in using the ink color I’m using. Easier to recognize especially if you have a few Muji fountain pens with different ink colors.

I have three Lamy Safari fountain pens with broad nibs and I use Lamy ink.
No problems with their writing or ink flow.
    Cost $55 Australian.
Only problems were that two of the caps became loose after a few years and had to be replaced.
The pen with a cartridge lasts about one week with a lot of writing and I use it when travelling-quick and easy to change ,no leaks and more compact than carrying a bottle.
    Lamy Safari are excellent pens.

I have the Twsbi clear with clear cap. I think it's a good pen for the money and I like the clear and how people think the pen is the color of the ink. One day I'll have a red pen, then powder blue the next day. It has the med nib and the only issue I have is with the nib sliding out of the pen. I just noticed this 2 days ago, I just push it back in. The nib doesn't fall all the way out , just a little bit; it may be caused by the way I drag the pen when I write.

Hello Peter - Platinum Carbon ink is pigment-based (as the name suggests) not dye-based though the pigment particles are finer than regular India ink. If you've been using it in the Lamy pens, they might have clogged for this reason. It is recommended that fountain pens with platinum carbon ink are flushed out properly every couple of weeks or so. Most fountain pen inks are dye-based for this reason. Really enjoyed the review, thanks

The “oil” they give you with the TWSBI ECO is silicon. Plus...you honestly have the most beautiful script handwriting I have ever seen. It takes an artist to do that...so it fits. I have the orange Opus 88 (my favorite pen of many fine ones) and never would have thought to stick a parallel nib on it. What an amazing testimony to its feed that it can keep up with the flow demand that nib puts on it.

I hate the kaweco sport. I had one in high school, got another later on, and then realized what I hated about it when I found the better version - the chinese delike alpha. That pen is exactly the same as the kaweco sport (but comes in brass, aluminum and acrylic for about $10-15) but is about 1cm longer, which lets it use a normal converter and lets it be used unposted. I've used one of those for years now as a paramedic, and I've even used it as a makeshift glass breaker with a rock (the brass model) and it still writes and opens just fine.
For me, my top 5 lower priced pens are the faber castell loom ($35-40) the muji aluminum pen ($15) the delike alpha ($10-15) the wing sung 698 ($15) and the FPR himalaya ($20-40)
If you've got $50-100, a platinum 3776 century, an osprey milano in ebonite, a pilot custom 74/91, a pelikan m205, or an 18k parker sonnet (routinely come around for $85-100)
And if you've got $100-150, a lamy 2000, cross townsend, vintage pelikan 400 or 140 (these will have flexible 14k nibs,) a pilot custom 742 or pilot falcon, or some other nice vintage pen like a parker vacumatic or parker 51.

Cool video.... I'm inspired to get me a pen again. Had a cheap one years ago and i wore it down to the breaking point.

17:51 Hey Peter, I don't know if this is of interest to you, or indeed if it's the same material, but looking at your Waterman there, it looks like it might be made of vulcanite and suffering from oxidization. Pipe smokers get the same problem with their vulcanite stems, and they use Obsidian oil, which liberally applied and then buffed off a good time later, will bring everything back jet black and super shiny.

Peter! I think the rubber bits on the MUJI pen is for if they run dry - you can write on them to get the pen flowing again! At least for regular pens that are slightly dry can be reinstated by drawing on rubber surfaces, something something friction.

If you don't have the buck for the Opus 88 you can still buy the Pilot Parallel and fit a converter in it (I don't remember if it's the CON40 or CON50 but one of the Pilot converters fit)
This way you can have both the parallel nib and use whatever ink you want

Wow this is nice! I really want to try these pens out :) I recently tried out copic markers. Have you ever tried drawing with them Peter? I posted a video about it so feel free to take a look if you need some inspiration :)

I also made the mistake of using india ink in my Safari and it got gummed up for a long time and I was frustrated. Got some really great ink and flushed the pen out really good, and now it's my favorite pen. So smooth. Kaweco Sport and Eco are in my want list, hopefully I'll get to try soon

Looking at the Muji pen -- it might be that the rubber stopper in the lid is there for the nib to press against, to ensure it doesn't scratch against an aluminum surface instead. As for showing the rubber on the outside of the lid, maybe just an aesthetic choice, and then they replicated it on the bottom just for symmetry's sake.

Muji means - 'no brand' in Japanese. The whole feel you get from their stores is quality, well designed, no 'frills', items that do not have a brand plastered over them. I thought the stores have come to the States?

    • @mjbe
      @mjbe 4 года назад

Only in a few big cities. For example, I live 360 miles from the nearest Muji (that's 500-600 km drive). Places I lived before would be twice as far as that. If Peter still lives near Figboot, there is not one in their state, either.

When I first became interested in fountain pens, it took me years to realize I was using the wrong ink and caused my pens to dry and not write consistently. This led me to forget about them until I just got a twsbi eco and got the right type of ink. Now I'm hooked on them.

  • @Keen_Edge
    @Keen_Edge 4 года назад +1

Love my TWSBI eco. Haven't tried the Kaweco sport yet, but maybe someday. That pen has a double broad option that really interests me. I wish I had access to a Waterman like that, vintage pens are just a touchy thing.

Watched this video before I owned a fountain pen (and subsequently bought the Muji) and I’m watching it again because I love it and now have two pens! I promised myself I wouldn’t start collecting, but now that I have two, I find myself pining for the Opus 88.

I have 2 pens in my pocket today
A Pilot Metropolitan with the cm stub nib and the Duke Charlie Chaplin fountain pen. The Metropolitan was my first fountain pen. The Duke is my favourite daily carry. Big and kinda ugly but writes really well.
Oh, and I also have a really beautiful Conway Stewart 84 fountain pen with a 14k gold nib.
Green and black celluloid with cracked ice finish. My most treasured pen.
I love your videos, please keep them coming if possible please
On my desk I have a 1950s Waterman's 55 like yours with a gold semi flex nib, and a Mentmore in braided rubber also from the 1950s.
I like Pilot Blue-black ink in the 70ml special bottle.
My favourite ink is Seitz kreuznach Palm green ink.

Fact time: Celluloid is an organic plastic invented in 1860ish. The first 100% synthetic plastic is bakelite, patented in 1907

Peter is my go to man on all things pen and ink with good reason, experience combined with great humor. Thanks for sharing your smarts once more, and now I’m looking for something equally entertaining on top inks, specifically purple and turquoise blues. Not likely that’s as popular a thing, but you’ve got to have a dream!
I’m already looking at an endlessly glowing lap from Noodlers bulletproof ghost ink USPS delivered which gooshed from a badly damaged cap and thinking this brand seems solid and lasting so far. Holds up to knit t-shirt fabric well. I also purchased a bottle of carbon ink for doodling around and watercolor works, but I really want a rich beautiful royal purple and a Caribbean blue that would make your eyes blush with envy.

The waterman 55 is from 1920 and I’m wondering whether a pen made today will hold up after 100 years. I’m glad you like that pen and I think you should do more dra-wings with it. A slightly smaller waterman 52 pen is half, or a third the price of the larger 55. The nib, though smaller in size, still will write as well as the 55.

Peter Draws hey there Peter! I’m doing ok here in Boston. I think I’ll post a video of me showing the audience a selection of waterman pens with different nib sizes. The number on the nib refers only to the size of the pen not the type of line it can make or how it functions. Your 55 is a great size of pen. Sorta fat, but not too fat. There were two sizes bigger and 3 sizes smaller. Sort of. It gets complicated. I think you and your audience might like seeing me try to explain the system they used! Stay tuned!

I had a Waterman in high school. I'd come across several vintage, yet still in great shape lever fill pens in the barn, and I think that the Waterman was my favourite. Sadly, that was almost 40 years ago (I graduated in 1985), and they were lost during several moves.

I hate fountain pens, but only because the first time I used one was in my art class and I had taken a long time on a drawing, it was finally time to ink. I dipped it and when I brought it over the paper, a big glob of ink splattered right onto the face I had drawn... You make me want to give it another try though
