    saw it at the U.S. premier tonight ; originally the whole crowd erupted when Godzilla shows up but after the first atomic blast after each time he showed it was like the reaper coming 😂. That dead silent scene in the end had the whole theater quiet . Amazing film

    Minus One definitely hits a lot better and more emotionally the more you are familiar with Japanese history, culture, and perspectives around the mid to late 40's. I'm not sure if the majority of people from outside Japan, especially ones from the West, could understand why the the characters behave and interact with each other in the way they do, but I would say Minus One will definitely age like a fine bottle of wine. I LOVED how the Minus One Godzilla first appear on the island as it felt so similar to Jurassic Park lol

    • @TOKYOTOYBANZAI
      @TOKYOTOYBANZAI  9 месяцев назад +3

      Yeah! I actually thought that opening scene was very similar to Jurassic Park too! And later scenes were straight from JAWS! I can definitely see Yamazaki's love for Steven Spielberg. My only big nitpick with the film, that I will get into in the second part of this video, is that Yamazaki chose to ignore the US occupation, which should have been all over Tokyo at that time. But I understand why he chose not to, and to make it a more personal story for the characters. Having the US occupating forces in there would have destracted from the story's focus, as it would have come to the US forces to combat Godzilla, not the people of Japan - which is far more interesting and engaging. Unfortunately, it comes across more like Yamazaki is ignoring history in that way. And with his more "nationalistic" views and prior projects, it really looks bad to some older generations ( I've heard it directly from several). But younger generations that aren't as familiar with WWII and the occupation will be none the wiser...

    • @kazuthesamurai7346
      @kazuthesamurai7346 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@TOKYOTOYBANZAI I think there are multiple reasons why the U.S. occupational soldiers are not included in the film. One of them easily could be a simple logistic issues of hiring tons of Caucasian and some colored males that resemble American troops if the film was filmed during the pandemic and the budget is only 15 million dollars. Also, most Japensee directors are not comfortable working with none Japanese speakers 🤔 The other theory I could come up with as a Japanese citizen is how the American occupation of Japan is largely ignored or neglected from our education system, and the majority of mainstream subjects associated with American occupation of Japan among Japanese media and citizens are rape and vandalism committed by American occupational troops. I'm not sure if thoes American soldiers were roaming all over Tokyo between 45 and 47 since they would have been assigned to military basis like Yokosuka and Naha instead of Ginza, which has always been the primary Japanese financial district

    Godzilla Minus One is absolutely a TRUE masterpiece for a Godzilla movie. It literary goes back to its 1954 original roots except the movies taking place at the end of World War II. So, I’m definitely onto seeing this movie in December 1st in the U.S. theaters for sure!

    We had a blast catching it on the Friday at Shinjuku. A real treat to catch a Godzilla on release day; and in my 40th bday year too! Enjoyed this first part of your review / summary - interested to know: just prior to Proto-Goji's arrival in the first act, we see irradiated fish dying in the water, signalling his arrival .. which is odd, as he doesn't get nuked until later? Is the inference that he's already a radioactive mutant upon his arrival? Is he unlucky enough to get nuked twice, once off screen!?

    • @TOKYOTOYBANZAI
      @TOKYOTOYBANZAI  9 месяцев назад +1

      Awesome! Also, great point! I completely forgot about that while I was recording the review. It seems like Godzilla has been around for centuries and is most likely been mutated from other radiation, waste and tests.... or that's just how he rolls naturatlly anyway. I'm sure there will be more info when a production / art book is released later this year 🤞 Thanks for watching!! You live around Tokyo or just visiting?

    I've said in several other comment sections and I'll say it again here... I will not, nor should anyone else, even though this comment is going to fall on deaf ears, support the continued non-stop deconstruction and destruction of beloved characters of the fandom. This has to stop. I don't care how great everyone claims this movie is. It is yet another attempt to destroy the character of an established icon. I just cannot accept turning Godzilla evil and blowing him up into a million pieces. I can accept the excuse that Godzilla is 'bad' since that is how he was created but there is literally no Godzilla fan I have ever met that likes to watch Godzilla get killed, let alone, get a completely humiliating death the way he does here... I'm sorry, there is no excuse for this BS... But but but... he starts to regenerate... yeah, yeah, yeah, save that excuse for another era... There are non-stop excuses from the woke entertainment industry to keep doing this crap...

      Dude no offense but you're so completely wrong. I've seen every single film, I love the franchise and all its goofiness. Of course I love the Earth defender Godzilla, who doesn't?, but that version of Godzilla is not the original. The original Godzilla is a vengeful monster looking to destroy humanity because he was victimized by nuclear testing. Godzilla is part of the "Hibakusha" the scarred survivors of atom bombs. The Japanese that lived through this shit were left with horrible marks on their skin which went on to inspire the Charcoal design of Godzilla in 1954. The original message is that we opened Pandora's box and it shall never be closed, nuclear weapons shall forever be a threat to humanity. Godzilla is an unapologetic embodiment of this and he's here to seek vengeance. Even Godzilla 90s follows this origin but eventually adopts new traits as the franchise evolved. So no this is not a case of Character assassination, it's a return to its roots and the new movie is an oath to the Japanese and how they rebuilt their country. I saw Gojira minus one in Kyoto and it's very much an homage to the original
