  • I absolutely love drawing soft, fluffy texture with pastels. It's a great media for fur but also feathers. In this video I'll draw a chick and give it ultra-soft texture with pencil flicks

    You were able to get a good amount of layers on that paper. I usually use pastelmat with my pastel pencils because I feel like I almost get an endless amount of layers. I've never used a tool to soften or blend either so it was interesting to see how you used it.

      You don't blend at all with pastel pencils?

      @@miklosnemeth8566 I usually use pan pastels as a base and do blend those. With pastel pencils I layer them and then gently use my finger to kind of soften them where needed. Hope that helps.

    Following procedures, using FC Pitt pastel pencils and using Pastelmat paper but not able to achieve those fine thin lines that represent the feathers (or hair on animal drawings). You mention that you use a flicking motion to achieve this but no matter what I try I can only get thicker uneven lines that look nothing like the ones you draw. My base layers are thin and blended just like you show on your videos. Also have tried to achieve those thin lines with a very sharp pencil point and not so sharp but no difference. I have tried applying light, medium and harder pressure but, again my lines never look as good as yours. Feeling frustrated and close to giving up on pastel pencils.

    Amazing Gemma, just wondering if faber castell pit pencils are you favourite and how do the compare to stabilo carbethello I’m new to pastels and looking for a recommendation

    • @GemmaChambersArt
      @GemmaChambersArt  2 года назад

      They are definitely my favourite but I don't have enough experience with Carbethello's to make an honest comparison. However, I use Faber Castell Polychromos for most of my colour pencil work, and the pigments, colour names and numbers are the same across the two. So for me it's knowing what to expect and colour picking that make them my first choice pastel pencils.

    Wow. Do you need to clean the smudge tool or your lighter pencils regularly during each process? Mine always get contaminated and smudgy very quickly. Is there a way to avoid this, and how do you quick-clean your smudge stick during your process, or do you full soap and water clean it?

    • @GemmaChambersArt

      I tend to clean it going from darker to lighter colours, just wiping it on a tissue removes the pastel on mine as it's quite rubbery.

    Hey I have a question for you I have 12 pastel pitt paints too, Faber Castell I have it on my pastel paper but I'm just learning my question is how can I draw realistic animals like you. This is hard or easy 😊 but youre drawing ✍️ awesome 🐥

    • @GemmaChambersArt
      @GemmaChambersArt  2 года назад

      It takes a bit of practice, but I believe anyone can learn how to draw. If you've got the materials already then that's awesome, just keep drawing and improving!
