  • Here are some basic exercises to prepare a horse to be ridden for the first time or that hasn't been ridden in a while. the main thing we are going to do is desensitize the horse to any motion going on the sides of the horse using the stirrup, and we are also going to make sure the horse will stand still for mounting. if you try to get on while the horses moving this can still a bad precedence and this can continue on to be a bad habit so it is very important that the horse does not move. once the horse has calmed down and will stand quietly we are doing a process called backing where you stand in the stir up and then they wait over the horse. concept of this is that if they are unpaired for the weight and they start to Buck you can push off the saddle without getting hurt. it's very effective way to introduce weight and make sure that the horse understands what the weight feels like. this is a stepping stone to your first ride. some horses react better than others, and some horses are more sensitive than others, this horse happens to be very sensitive so the feel of a fender popping next to her belly is something she has to be desensitized to.
