Do you agree that season 1 of True Detective is one of the greatest detective dramas ever? It's a bold statement, but I do feel like it's up there! Let me know your thoughts below!
I absolutely don't. (And it's not because of the following, but it must be said...) And I think it's kind of baffling how people ignore how much Nic Pizzolato stole from other people. I think there's no bigger proof of how uncapable he is to create something like that on his own than his latter works. A quick google search with "True Detective plagiarism" should suffice.
Was really good. But saying it was perfect is nuts. I’ve seen better series, breaking bad, sopranos. How could it be perfect if it wasn’t in conversation for best show? I’ve never heard anyone say true detective was best series ever.
To me, the genius of True Detective Season 1 is that Rust completes his arc from pessimist to optimist by encountering true evil. This perfectly encapsulates the paradoxical, mysterious nature of the human condition; to fully know a thing you must experience its opposite.
True Detective Season 1 is GOATED. Best 8 Episode mini-series run of ALL TIME. TOP 3 TV character and performance from Mcconaughey as Rust Cohle. Just pure EPIC filmmaking.
@@BrainPilotwhat do you think of silence of the lambs? Imo as far as detective drama go in general. Obv the gold standard for TV is true detective season 1 and for movies SOTL is still the best in that regard (Se7en coming in second). I guess people describe it as psychological thrillers but whatever you call it, all 3 still imo remain the best “disturbing” detective stories ever put to screen.
The amount of callbacks to previous statements is amazing and is what gives it that special feeling. Like when Marty talks about “the detectives curse” and how the clue is right under their nose - directly personified through the fact that Rust comes face to face with Errol 15 years before he realises it’s him
There are two particular scenes that have made me feel pure terror and distraught : the one where Reggie Ledoux is shown with the gas mask and the final scene when they’re chasing Errol in Carcosa; no other tv show or movie has made me feel the same. This show is memorable because it shows us how mankind can be so cruel to itself and also that we are all alone and it is up to mankind to self govern (sort of like how a spiral behaves as a derivative of its previous point). Marty and Rust’s characters are both written and acted with perfection. Both the literary and cinematographic aspects of the show make True Detective S1 a true masterpiece and an artwork that will remain relevant for decades if not centuries. Bonus points for Alexandra Daddario’s excellent performance 🐈🤣.
Reggie Ledoux walking in the mask is the scariest montster I've seen in a while, because he was a human, yet knowing what he did and then seeing dirty, masked, tall, hatchet hanging down and that jock strap. Terrifying.
Knowing that it was an anthology series added to the suspense for me. Watching the Carcosa fight, I was half convinced Marty and Rust were going to die and it would all be for naught
What about when they (rust & ginger) were in the restaurant talking to the big fat guy trying to find reggie ledoux, and he threatened rust... that was scary too
I think you hit the nail on the head when you describe the "complex simplicity" of the show. It's a testament to the skills of the writers and directors that they were able to present the plot in such an efficient and comprehensible way. Because there are a lot of shows that have effective horror elements and great character performances. But it's extremely rare for a crime drama to have such an immersive plot. But yet somehow this show managed to catch lightning in a bottle in every single category . It really is perfect.
watched the first three episodes and i'm usually not used to the slow pace shows but i was still hooked. then ep 4 had me locked into it with the biker scene. i can't wait to finish it the season.
The dope house robbery gone wrong is the best single shot take I ever seen in my life. The intensity is insane & chaotic. The best single take shot in history (Yes better than the Oldboy hallway fight)
I just finished this season today for the first time ever and I'm blown away. Quickest 8 episodes I've ever watched and Rust is a captivating character.
Greatest single season of television in history imo. Perfect writing, setting, story, acting, casting, direction, cinematography, everything just hits the nail on the head.
Season 1 is a masterpiece. My fav 8 hours on tv. Mindhunter had this level of potential. Netflix buried it. I wish some other network/ott would pick it up and provide closure to the viewers.

I think Cary Fukunaga needs more praise on this. Nick P wrote some of the other seasons and they just didn't have it. maybe because he spent much more time on writing season 1
You well described the simple complex structure of season 1. To me there is a lack of consistency in season 4, some episodes emphasize supernatural elements and some are back at the rationale level.
A true example of lightening in a bottle. Rhust made the season and even through there are tons of portrayals of the tortured detective he is just on another level.
Great comparison, absolutely to the point. The writing of Martys & Rusts story was so much better prepared ( and filmed) than most of modern tv-series. The characters and their developement were truly convincing.
I just finished the first season and was blown away.. I really wish this show continued with these two staring in it. Watching them work together to take down the cult would have been great TV
This is a great commentary on the shows true Detective season one I really wish we could’ve stayed with these two characters throughout the show especially meth in McConaughey‘s character there are so many layers to peel back and he’s such a dynamic character that I couldn’t get enough of when I see him on screen
I agree. I'm a huge Wire fan, watched the whole series 4 or 5 times now but nothing compares to TD1. I've never been as entranced and emotionally invested in anything on screen like I was for this. Better Call Saul is the only thing that comes close for me.
The wire is the greatest show of all time (my opinion, and it’s not by a landslide), and TD S1 is the greatest single season of all time. Barely beating out season 4 of Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones IMO
On top of it being incredibly well written, I’m from South Louisiana. I work with guys from New Iberia, Vermillion Parish, Lafayette. I see these places while driving to my friends house. Idk, it was dark and gritty but it also felt like home in a way.
I live in Louisiana , last name is fontenot, and I’ve been to just about every area the show takes place in, that adds another level of creepiness. Especially after the hurricanes it’s so believable that a serial killer would take advantage of the devastation Katrina and Rita caused.
I love mini series format and season one of True Detective is imo exactly that. It's laser focused on delivering a compelling story, it has no hints whatsoever about future seasons. Directors and writers being completely in sync of the episode structure, the individual stories and the main narrative. It's a very rare sight to see
I watched the first season the second time a month ago and still can’t stop thinking about the characters and plot from time to time. And one thing especially blows me away is how were shown the moments where Rust take off his masks and was weak and emotional naked and what hard way he passed. He is the true hero and person.
First season is amazing. It’s obvious with s4 that Issa had to rely on what worked with s1 to draw more viewers. It doesn’t make up for the terrible dialogue and confusion of all the open ended storylines that won’t come to an end in the next episode, even if it’s 24 hours long.
I think/believe that the Sopranos is the greatest show in the history of television. Yet there isn’t a season that touches True Detective season 1. There’s no bad scene/episode - it’s remarkable.
Being from the UK, settings in the United States are so much more alluring. There's just more to work with ... Slough Horses is probably the only UK crime show that has pulled me in
Nic Pizzolatto should write a sequel to season 1 where Rust and Marty take down that entire family and it shows them spending years tracking them down. I think that shit would be soo fucking worth it there’s so much things that can be expanded on especially how it ended .
Honestly these shows that try to recreate true d s1 just make it feel that much better. Nothing will come close-were there any flaws? I was never confused during this show, it was complicated but not convoluted. So damn good.
There are very few pieces of medium I wish to see or play for the first time again.... I really wish this was one piece I can unsee to experience again with fresh eyes
Agreed. Now…if you want to experience True Detective, but in a video game, play Disco Elysium. The most rich philosophy and dialogue in any game, ever.
In the time it came out, it was, but definitely the best of the series. Other series have come out trying to copy it, but no other show has been able to capture the tv audience or originality of True Detective Season 1.
Obviously season one is goated, but am I crazy for enjoying night country? I seriously love how hard it flips from real supernatural beings to oh maybe not to both. I haven’t watched either seasons in a long time, but I was very surprised to learn that the last one was so universally hated lol
I said in your last video that I'll gladly watch all season 1 TD videos, and so I'm here! Thank you for the great content. God bless in Lord Jesus Christ's name, amen!! 😊
I think season 1 is the single best season of television, there is so many shows that are better but all those shows ran for multiple seasons. Like breaking bad for example undisputed one of the best tv shows ever but its 5 seasons without all 5 seasons the show isn't as good If that makes sense. Season one of true detective is a stand alone masterpiece told in one season only. thats why I think its the single best season of television.
I watched sooo many series and movies past 40 years cant even count. But TD season 1 was perfection in all aspects. I went and told my views on this on social media group and even had short back and forth with its writer Nic Pizzolatto
My boyfriend watched this last week and he made me watch it. He said Rust reminded him of me, my dark side. I felt flattered, like he said I was pretty.
Im glad that there are only 6 episodes to Night Country. It's a hot mess. Poor structure, not even really a detective mystery, more of a horror and supernatural show that unsuccessfully is dressed up/presented as a detective story. It really doesn't have the TD DNA. Although have panned seasons 2 and 3, they did still at least feel like they were part of the TD anthology. Night Country does not, is poorly written and directed. I think the best things about Night Country are Jodi Foster and Kali Reis, who sadly are not enough to save it from itself. In my opinion, the best seasons are first season 1, then 3, and finally 2. I wouldn't include Night Country as part of the franchise.
Probably the reason it feels so differently than the others to you is for the first time in the series, the original show's creator - Pizzolatto - wasn't involved in the creation of this one. He even criticized season 4 and called it stupid.
A short story (8 episodes) cannot be compared with a book (40-60+ episodes). True Detective is the best “short story” in this genre. But The Wire is the best “book” in this genre. No comparisons.
It saddens me that season 4 did so much better than the other seasons, and by a lot apparently. Now that I’ve seen the end of it, season 4 is a complete abomination but since so many ppl watched it, the same showrunner is doing the next season too 😭😭😑🔫
It's fantastic theater that spends the whole time telling you that it's theater and that just makes you more invested and all of the time it's telling you not to believe all the other theater out there that pretends to be truth.
i haven’t even watched any of the other seasons once i realized the second season was a new story i stopped watching. everyone involved crushed this first season and it cannot be redone imo
I don’t get how Pizzolatto can write this masterpiece and then make such bad seasons after…..and season 4 is a joke throwing in season 1 Easter eggs like Tuttle owning the mine and Tsalal, the spirals, the antlers and having Rusts mom and dad appear seem like cheap gimmicks to try and bring in the die hard season 1 lovers but i guarantee it won’t connect to the Tuttle/Childress cult, the only remaining Tuttle was the Senator Eddie Tuttle and that was in 2012 I highly doubt this cult has so much reach that it even came to Ennis which coincidentally is where Rust is from it’s so cheap and stupid…..and if Peter ends up being the killer that would be a horrible twist…..season 4 is a disaster
I don't think season 2 and 3 were bad. He just set the bar too high on his first season, creating a standard that was going to be nearly impossible to live up to. Kind of like what the movie Jaws did for its sequels.
You’re not being a fanboy. I’ve watched Seasons 1 and 4 back-to-back. The first season is pure filmmaking with no ulterior motives, while the fourth season feels like agenda-driven moviemaking with little care for the story.
I gave it a chance, but I really don't like Night Country. I keep wanting more of the case and less of the family drama and side plots. I made it four episodes.
The reason season 1 is so good is the same reason a band's first album is always there best... The first season was basically Nick Pizzolatto's life's work at that point. He wrote some other stuff here and there but True Detective was a lifetime of good ideas up to that point. No rush to write like for season 2 and no studio input just a story that he had 20-30yrs to think about
What I disliked was that the casting of women felt more for woody harresons desire then for reality. This took a bit of realism from me. But the show is next level. The dialogue, the structure, the cinematography. Even the long car rides. And and it felt like there was stakes. At the last scene I was jumping in anxiety with the possibility of their deaths. This is rare!
Saw it in the UK Sept 2014 just using a phone no WiFi. Never watched it again since then but looked at a lot of clips. I kinda knew it was the last big TV show there was ever gonna be because the West is finished atomised culture is no longer possible. That was 10 years ago there was never a TV season any thing like it since then. It gave Amurika its black pill but in West Europe the novels of Houellebecq and the 2nd wave of Japanese S. Korean and French cinema late 90s- 2010 approx had delivered the same message. The black pill end. That's why I immediately picked up on the show. It was the same vibes. But I'm afraid the game of culture is long over and done. Something right out of TD coming for real in 2020- 2024. The guy who tried to describe the insane plot of TD season 2 should get medal. I never did get my TD T shirt. It was a great memory over taken by reality. RIP TD 2014 UK.
Can’t recreate season 1. Season 4 is solely relying on its tie in to season one and besides showing the Spiral and mentioning Travis Cole there nothing good or special going
i've said it before and i'll say it again. there are only 3 things that any person needs to see in their lifetime - true detective series 1 ; the Wire and Breaking Bad in that order. everything else is just embellishment and detail. watch these 3 and you need never own a TV ever again.

One of the best shows ever. How sad the last season was.
Yeah that first season was something special!
Couldn’t agree more
I agree 100%
Good to hear!
U should check out the wire although it’s not really a detective show
Yes, superior writing and superior actors..
Top shelf stuff!
agreed. season 1 was perfect.
I regularly rewatch it yearly
Yeah it's such a good piece of television!
A short story (8 episodes) cannot be compared with a book (40-60+ episodes).
True Detective is the best “short story” in this genre. But The Wire is the best “book” in this genre. No comparisons.
That's an interesting way to put it!
It saddens me that season 4 did so much better than the other seasons, and by a lot apparently. Now that I’ve seen the end of it, season 4 is a complete abomination but since so many ppl watched it, the same showrunner is doing the next season too 😭😭😑🔫
True Detective Season 1 is truly the greatest police drama ever. That accolade previously belongs to NYPD Blues. Does anyone disagree?
This first season is incredible!
It's fantastic theater that spends the whole time telling you that it's theater and that just makes you more invested and all of the time it's telling you not to believe all the other theater out there that pretends to be truth.
Probably one of the best tv series ever.
It really is!
i haven’t even watched any of the other seasons once i realized the second season was a new story i stopped watching. everyone involved crushed this first season and it cannot be redone imo
I’d nominate it as the best show ever
The first season is definitely something special!
The simplest reason for me is the cast. The first season just nailed the cast
Yeah the casting was just spot on!
Edge of Darkness was a pretty good British show.
I've not seen that! I'll add it to my list
season 2 was also great
agreed all points
Masterpiece
It really is!
It’s funny when you encounter people who you just know have never watched x-files.
I purchased Season 1 on RUclips from Max Streaming but I can't find it. Can anyone help?
Night country is terrible
True detective season 1
Westworld season 1
Both are best hours of tv history
Sadly their sequel seasons aren't.
what are the odds , recently i found out about night country and watch only season 4 , why is there the same logo , lol
You’re not being a fanboy. I’ve watched Seasons 1 and 4 back-to-back. The first season is pure filmmaking with no ulterior motives, while the fourth season feels like agenda-driven moviemaking with little care for the story.
Season 1 was fantastic drama, and 3 was good
I gave it a chance, but I really don't like Night Country. I keep wanting more of the case and less of the family drama and side plots. I made it four episodes.
This season is great. True Detective is like star trek movies - 1 and 3 are good, 2 and 4 suck
The reason season 1 is so good is the same reason a band's first album is always there best... The first season was basically Nick Pizzolatto's life's work at that point. He wrote some other stuff here and there but True Detective was a lifetime of good ideas up to that point. No rush to write like for season 2 and no studio input just a story that he had 20-30yrs to think about
2nd greatest show ever TD 1, ONLY 1 SEASON, ONLY BEHIND THE SOPRANOS WHICH HAD 6, MORE REALLY
Numero uno 🙌
8:31 Woody Hullson? 🙊
Did anyone else think rust was the yellow king at one point?
Yeah at one point they made us believe that!
TD season1 is a perfect example of Show; don't tell.
Yeah it's incredible!
joji.
