- In the dimly lit confines of the battleship USS New Mexico's communications room, Radioman Petty Officer 1st Class Walter Rougeux hunched over his equipment, his ears tuned to the crackling radio frequencies.
As a member of the Fifth Fleet's radio intelligence unit, Rougeux has been intercepting and decoding enemy transmissions since March, key to the Battle of Okinawa.
But it's now May 1945, the enemy is getting desperate, and threats are more present than ever.
Just as the sun begins setting, an urgent message from a nearby ship shatters the feeling of tranquility. Enemy aircraft have been detected approaching the Task Force. With New Mexico as the flagship, they are likely the primary target.
The Captain's order is immediate and urgent, pushing Rougeux into high gear. His skilled hands race across the dials, swiftly confirming their suspicion: enemy planes are only minutes away.
With this, the entire battleship springs into action. Alarms blaring, dozens of men run to man their battle stations and point their weapons, prepared to defend their vessel against the impending aerial assault.
The NM design was ahead of her time, perhaps why she served so many years for our country. To those that served (the greatest generation (my dad and grandfather included)), may God rest your souls from war.
How were they ahead of their time when they were basically copies of the older Pennsylvania class? They were literally called the "standard series". The main improvements were 50 cal guns instead of 45s and a different shaped bow, in almost every other respect they were basically glorified Pennsylvanias

@@cleverusername9369 I read where NM was the only one of it's class of 3 which had some type of an auto-electric transmission (sounded weird to me) which helped it gain a little on its speed. You made some good observations though.

That’s the amazing thing about the U.S. military - general officers in the U.S. military never seem to forget their roots…. I spent 10.5yrs as a Marine infantry officer and I always found it humbling when hiking “point” on a 25 mile conditioning hike is a general officer.. and the times it happened to me that general officers ruck was ALWAYS heavier than the standard gear/weight….

Yes scrap is a sad demise. She was old and had led an honorable and memorable life. Quite a few sufficient wounds. Some of these it I suppose it is best to lay down in rest and memory than to be flaunted or simply left to rot
The US has saved more Battleships as museums and historical monuments than has the rest of the world combined.
Okinawa is what convinced the US that an invasion of Home Islands would be too costly and so the atomic bombs were used.

I Find it extremely sad that She was sold for scrap, and not turned into a dry dock museum someplace, Shameful treatment of such a Victorious Ship that suffered so much with all those who served on her and kept going to the end of the war, I believe that All our Battle ships need to be preserved for ever more, they are part of the History that helped the Nation win the war, they are not scrap !!
They couldn't save everything. We were pretty broke after the war. People just didn't want to spend the money to save every single ship. They should have preserved enterprise and Nevada. Maybe a few more, but the rest had to go.

2:26 I have to take issue with the comment that occupation of the Aleutian Islands were the only occupation of US soil by the Japanese during WWII. Alaska was a territory and held the same status as the Philippines and Hawaii at that time. The Philippines were occupied by Japan for the majority of WWII. Looking at a map of the US today shows the Philippines as an independent country, with Alaska and Hawaii as US states but that was not the case during the war.

I kinda know that feeling. Unfortunately, i won't bring any money in scrapping. While I've done alot, helped/cared for many, a vet...no metal in me, maybe an organ or two - which I'll share. Hopefully a few more years, maybe longer...but my hope is for democracy...don't let it end, removing all the reasons they/i fought for. Vote..
Oh and by the way for the hater that commented on the title, I could really care less what the title says or what little mistakes the author made in the video. I really enjoy watching these battles of World War II

I thought the proximity fuse AA ammo was better than this?? No? I have seen vids on proximity fusing and touting it as one of the greatest inventions of the war. Descriptions made it sound like the AA with proximity fuses shot down planes easily.....
I agree with the first comment. Make your title correct. I would watch it, but there’s no real reason to think this was one of the ships the Japanese were going for. They wanted the carriers at this point in the war.
What is incorrect about the title?
A shame they didn't think, once the kamikazees were a factor, to fabricate protective cages around key areas of the ship. It is a relatively low tech, low cost, method to protect lives and highly valuable assets. Sturdy steel bars configured web like, would have reduce the impact of a plane, breaking it up in some cases.

Better educate your writers. Both the Philippines and Guam were US territories occupied by the Japanese in World war two. So Alaska's Aleutian Islands were NOT the only US territories occupied. Your staff is often ignorant in similar ways. Shame.
Guam was the first American territory taken, just hours after Pearl Harbor. Revisionist historians always forget the IDL. Guam and the Philippines suffered incredible atrocities during their occupation by Imperial Japan. This year marks the 80th Anniversary of Guam's Liberation. Unbelievably, there are still a few war survivors remaining. Though they were children at the time, they are cherished members of this small island where America's Day Begins.
