Cook doesn't have the shot range that Root has. Cook plays every ball with so much energy and so much concentration. That takes a lot out of your mentally .
Root is more free flowing. Root won't surpass Sachin. But he has more chance then Cook.

I somehow still have a sneaking suspicion that Root will fall short. He certainly is young enough and can play enough tests, but I have noticed that most English and Australian batsmen tend to want to retire to do other things post 35. I mean, Cook was in a similar position to Root and he was pretty young when he retired. One benefit for him is that he can essentially leave ODI cricket, since there is so little of that played anyways. Sachin was playing a huge volume of ODI cricket and test cricket for most of his career.
When it comes to being the best, its really difficult to look past Sachin in any measure. To play 200 tests, make that many runs, that many centuries, and be so extraordinarily consistent wherever he plays and against whomever he plays. I think Sachin's most extraordinary test stat is that he averages at least 40 in every country he's played in and against every opposition he has ever played against. The only country in which he hasn't scored a century in is Zimbabwe where he only played 4 tests. That is an incredible stat. One that I doubt can be replicated by anyone soon.
Root has already said he wants to play as much cricket as possible for England. Whereas I never heard Cook saying anything like that.
@@hasanramzan6578 Well, what is "as much cricket as possible"? He's the one who will define that. If he starts feeling exhausted in another 2-3 years and his family obligations become more priority, then you never know. Also, he's at the peak of his form now. Say he goes through a year or two of bad form, like he did in the previous phase. People's mindset can change. Most cricketers don't play till their late 30's.
Some cricket boards play more odi matches and test matches, England plays less odi's for example see sachin and jayasuriya did debute around 1989 and played 450-463odi matches where as jayawarden and sanga did debute in 1998-99 they also played like 375-440 matches of odi 125+ test matches,
Sachin was an absolute beast in the 90's across formats....1994-1999 he was the most prolific batsmen ever....the range & quality of shot making was pure genius level.....root is fantastic but even if he gets above Sachin he won't be half as good as Sachin.....
Root would have played more match winning innings. Sachin played more match saving innings. Though, I think Root has not faced a barrage of epic bowling lineups unlike Tendulkar.

@@amitm2692 I agree with you doofus, but it's not invalid. Not like England has a very good bowling attack. They lack an experienced spinner and Anderson was often rested due to their rotation policy. Woakes can't take wickets outside England and Wood is injury prone. England is winning on the merit of their batting and setting the pace of the game. India also famously did this in their follow-on victory at Eden against the Invincibles.
Also, while it is a team sport, it is an individually driven team sport. One player bowls and another bats. The background around them can play a role just as well as they can't. So shut yer trap.

The most under rated player that never gets any credit is Kallis. No3 on all time list for runs,55 ave mind you. a Few wickets shy of 300 test wickets. And 200 catches.

Imran Khan is the best all-rounder imo. Averaged 38 with the bat and 23 with the ball.
From 1982 to 1990, he averaged 51 with the bat (higher than Viv Richards) and 19 with the ball (lower than Malcolm Marshall).

I think I need to repeat the fact that for almost a decade in his career, Imran was statistically a better batsman than Viv Richards and statistically a better bowler than Malcolm Marshall SIMULTANEOUSLY! Kallis, on the other hand, was never simultaneously a world class batsman and a world class bowler in his entire career. During his peak, he was a great batsman and a useful bowler.
@thelegendkiller4051 and judging by your statement bowling is the only measurement we look at when judging an all rounder 🤔. Kallis was a far superior batsman and fielder than Khan. Khan is 23rd in the all time test wickets and Kallis 40th but Kallis is 3rd in all time test runs and khan isn't even in the top 150. Add catching to the mix and Kallis is 3rd on that list as well. Khan was a good bowler who could bat a bit. Kallis was a great batsman who bowled really well and was also a great fielder.
@@thelegendkiller4051 Keep in mind,that Kallis was usually the 5 seamer in a very good SA seam attack and was mearly used to rotate/rest the bowling attack. He bowled at 140km constantly and only took 60 odd wickets less than Imran.
Kallis was an elite batsman ,a very good bowler and better fielder. There is just no comparison.

Sachin Tendulkar has played against first 25 all time highest test wicket takers ever...how many of those have root played against? Sachin's faced three generations of legendary bowlers of all countries. What about root huh? We can remember legendary battles of Sachin vs Warne, Murli, Swan, Panesar, Vettorie, Saqlain, Imran, Marshall, Walsh Ambrose, Bishop, Mcdormatt, Macgrath, Gillespie, Fleming, Johnston, Donald, Pollok, Ntini, Fraiser, Lewis, Anderson, Broad, Waas, Doul, Boult, Bond... How many legendary battles of Root do you remember?
So if its so easy for batters to score runs now because of the pitches, wasn't it easier for bowlers to get wickets in the 80s and 90s because of pitches being bowler friendly? Why doesn't the argument apply to bowlers ?

Another butthurt Indian on RUclips taking things personally. Relax man. This is just a conversation where three people are trying to discuss a topic. If you ask me, I still think Sachin is partially better because of some of your arguments. But there are arguments to be made for Root here. Sachin scored a lot of runs and centuries against weaker teams like Zimbabwe, West Indies, Bangladesh, England (who were way weaker then). Out of his 51 centuries, India won only 20 matches out of which only 3 were outside the subcontinent. Joe Root with England won 21 matches when he scored a century with about 7 played outside of England, Australia or New Zealand (where you can say have pitches suiting Root) and he still has gas left in his tank to play. India's bowling attack back then wasn't great, agreed, but you cannot easily determine if the matches were won because of a match winning innings or good bowling. You would have to go through each match to know that. Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan, and Kumble were world class bowlers back then too btw.

Sachin played for 24 years till the age of 40, JR will be 34yo in December. JR is only 3900 runs behind him, in a career of only 11years and 7months.
Given that ENG has 9 more tests this year and then 5 test match series against IND at Home and then 5 tests in ashes 2025. The gap of 1351 runs between RP and JR will be covered easily by next year.
He averages 1000 - 1100 test runs each year he can take over Sachin by the time he's 37-38.
As a cricket fanatic it makes me glad that we might see him take ST over.

I think they forgot Sachin also has 18,426 ODI runs, 100 centuries overall and 200 international wickets! Busy drooling over chasing down one of the many records he holds which is 15,921 Test runs. Not to mention he played in an era where bats were half of what it is today, different and tougher conditions and another level of bowling attacks. Plus god knows how many times he was wrongly given out since there was no DRS and all the other tech there is available today.

Oh please, stop with the simping. Sachin was a great batsman, maybe the 2nd best of all time. But don't make excuses about being wrongly given out, everyone suffered from bad decisions and I can guarantee he was given not out numerous times when he was definitely out. It's swings and round-a-bouts, taking the good with the bad, or what ever idiom you choose to use. But don't make excuses, otherwise we could start making excuses that Don Bradman would have scored far more runs today given the safety equipment, ground conditions, better quality equipment and not to mention being paid to play. Comparing players from different eras is always based on opinions and nothing more.

Joe root hasnt gotten a hundred, but has some of the most fifties ever in australia, thats a misconception, he has had some very consistent performances in australia without a hundred, averages 38 which is ok there. Kohli with all his grandeur in england averages only 32 or 34 there. Jokes on you, he failed in 2021 in england as well.

Tendulkar scored 10 centuries against Zimbabwe plus bangladesh and batted in flat pitch era. So root is already better but he needs to score a few in Australia even though the pitches are not as flat there as they wrre in sachins era
Sachin everyday day of the week, twice on Sunday. Think about the era of bowlers in Sachin’s era vs Root’s era and you will start to realise how much more difficult it is for Sachin to make the volume of runs he did

did you understand that the subject was specifically how highly rated Joe Root would be IF he did overtake Sachin?the reason it was about Root in the first place was that he was about to become the leading scorer in test matches for England, something that has now been achieved. if you had listened then the general consensus was that Sachin would still be regarded higher regardless of whether he was overtaken or not.
Always look at the lens of 3 key elements which define real batting greatness - overall quality of opposition attacks during the batting lifespan, ability to play pace and spin with ease, and ability to perform in immense pressure. Easy to see that the period between 1980 to 2001 saw the most legendary bowlers the game has ever graced. Let's face it - Root never faced the quality of bowlers seen during the whole of the 90s - Aus, SA, Pak, WI had fearsome attacks in that era - Tendulkar was literally a one man army for the team the whole of the 90s whilst carrying 1bn people's hopes, and dominated in all conditions. Sachin had a stellar record against Warne and Muralitharan. Talk about 2010-onwards era which Root has been part of, none of the spinners barring Ashwin and Lyon are anywhere near the quality of 90s era. This comparison between Sachin and a flatlining average attack basher like Joe Root doesn't even merit discussion. Root may have 15k plus runs if he gets there, but he's nowhere near the pinnacle league where the likes of Sachin and Lara reside.
Yes, those things remain throughout. There's also other things to consider like playing before or after pitches were covered, and before or after DRS was introduced.

Joe root carried his batting lineup WHEN NOT A SINGLE BATTER, FROM 2018 to 2022 even averaged 30, he has one of the best batting years of all time on swinging nippy pitches against the two best bowling lineups. @@AlenBenny-q8t I was simply adding a couple of era differences to think about to add to the three criteria suggested for judging batsmen, not just with Sachin and Root in mind.
Greatness is not just seen through stats. Ask any cricket historian for their top 10 and many wouldn’t mention him in their list.
He will definitely be England's best but not in the league of Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting. Probably Steve smith will end up in that bracket.
Williamson, Root, Kohli, Sangakkara - I think this is another bracket just a notch lower but still great batamen

@@user-uu8uk2qj1l Fair point brother, just checked that williamson's record is pretty terrible - averages 33 in Eng, 30 in India and in the 20s in SA and SL. Inflated record of 100+ avg in pakistan/uae has helped his average.
What About Kallis as a Batter
Williamson stats: Averages 42 in Aus, 33 in India, 30 in Eng, 21 in RSA, 26 in Sri Lanka. Williamson is a notch below these greats.

Sachin has better stats after 142 Tests but if Root has a significantly better later career than Sachin he has a chance, easier typed than done though.
The quality bowling Sachin faced was far better. From SA, Pakistan, Australia, WI, Sri Lanka. Also, the pitches now are flat roads

If I remember correctly Kohli started becoming a monster by then. Still he could only score a highest score of 88 in that series which was highest in both teams together...

For Australia they always made sporting wickets except a few...

If Joe Root could face the likes of prime Wasim, Waqar, McGrath, Warne, Donald, Muralitharan, Walsh, Ambrose, Mushtaq, while carrying a batting lineup and without DRS, then we would have a debate. Sure, the bowlers today are quite good, and will be considered legends in a few years time. But the game is much more geared towards the batsman these days.

Root is an efficient run scorer. But Tendulkar / Lara is who you pay to watch. Moreover, the quality of test cricket is not great. Apart from Aus and India, no other team can retain their quality players

Just runs don't make you a better batter. How those runs were made? The pressure and expectations matter. Sachin played in whole different circumstances against arguably better bowlers. And who can forget the amount of ODI runs Sachin has made. Root may huff and puff and get a few more than Sachin in the end in test cricket just like how Anderson prolonged it but Sachin was and will be the best. Period.

England play a lot of test cricket compared to other nations, including India. There is more to greatness than just volume of runs scored. Lara and Bradman are low down on the list of top run makers, but are better than most of the players above them in the list, and rightly considered all time greats. Root is certainly one of the best test batsmen of the current era, but I'm not even sure if he's England's best ever test batter, if you're comparing him with all time greats like Hutton and Hobbs. I would even rank Pietersen above him, despite Pietersen having scored fewer runs an having a lower average, purely because of the impact he had. There are plenty of test batters I would rank above Root, the following players are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head: Bradman, Viv Richards, Lara, Sobers, Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Sangakara, Miandad, Alan Border, Martin Crowe, KP... basically there are lot of batsmen I would consider ahead of Root.
Why didn't you tell about Bangladeshi and Zimbabwean players too? Sachin also played almost 40 to 50 tests against them too. And his batting average was far better with hhose teams rather than the strong opponents.

This will trigger the Indians but as an Englishman who should be biased I cannot. Tendulkar was fabulous. Faced the best era of international fast bowling and the 2 greatest spinners. Akram, Donald, Steyn, Pollard, Ambrose, Walsh, Younis, Mcgrath, Lee, Akhtar, and he still won most battles. Roots record in Australia cannot be ignored. Great player but not the best!
England plays an average of 10.5 tests a year. India plays 8.5. In Sachins era, it was even less - around 6. Afghanistan plays an average of 2 a year.
It is this imbalance that allows Root and Cook to play so much more. Not fair at all.

Jack Hobbs is England's best ever. Hands down. Root is only mounting a case to be included in England's best team at the moment. How he goes in the next few years will be interesting.

Root has to play a minimum of 43 test matches at an average of 45 per innings (current avg = 41) to pass Sachin. Eng played 8 tests last year. This means Root has to play another 5 years with an average that he currently is short off. Really!!!

Root is averaging around 50 ..to cross Tendulkar he needs to average 60 plus in the next 3 to 4 years. I can't see Root averaging 60 inbthe next 3 to 4 years. Age will slow him down as he cross 35.

Longevity isn't related to stress. It's related to hunger and motivating yourself. When you are doing well in any area of life, after sometime hunger dies. That's where the difference between great and greatest gets defined.
Sachin not only outlasted others, he even began early. It takes some serious talent to play that Windies, Pak, Australian bowlers at the age of 16. I can bet people didn't even know when root or cook were of 16 and then we have Sachin playing at international stage.
We don't need to diminish anything Sachin did to give credit to others. It's gonna take a long time for cricket to find another Sachin.
Root away average needs to be above 50 atleast to be consider among GOAT. This is the biggest factor why i put Sachin above Lara. Also 35 average in Australia goes against him.

This era has lesser quality opposition teams than before, the number of world class or all time great bowlers are missing. With the emergence of T20 the Test too look different and faster. If Root cannot break Sachin's record, then it's a great miss for him. Still like Virat in ODI, Root cannot be greater than Sachin.

I think it also comes down to the quality of bowlers that sachin has faced and root has faced. The sachin era was completely different filled with one or two legendary bowlers in every team and today there is hardly one bowler that matches the quality of shane warne, murlitharan, brett lee, macgrath, shaun tait, wasim, waqar, akhtar, ambrose, Dennis lillee, etc etc. And top of that in recent times countries apart from india, australia, england, are not taking test cricket seriously and because of that the quality of test cricket has also came down. Thats why i dont think we should compair root with sachin, i think he will easily break sachin's record but he can never match the legacy and quality of sachin. He is just making runs agains weaker opponents.

if Sachin was an Englishman he would have probably played 250 test matches and scored 20000 test runs....he couldn't coz India preferred many more ODIs....if you want to compare modern generation greats you also need to see their ODI runs to really compare anyone with him...and there Root is no where compared to Sachin...infact no batsman comes close to Sachin if you see combined test and ODI runs...
