Nació un 25 de diciembre de 1940 en un barrio del Bronx, cuando era niño su padre se suicidó a causa de problemas monetarios y maritales, después de este acontecimiento en la vida del pequeño Spector, se mudó con su madre y su hermana a California, a una pequeña ciudad llamada Fairfax, ahí fue cuando se empezó a llenar de música y aprendió a tocar la guitarra, piano y el bajo. Fue en Los Angeles donde empezó a frecuentar un estudio de grabación donde le permitían aprender sobre los asuntos técnicos de la música.....Su vida personal poco importa aquí.....pero el legado que nos ha dejado...dificilmente lo superaran otros productores y músicos........Escuchar su voz y su piano... es todo un lujo....

Without Him ... without sound .... pages of the history of popular music would be very empty ..... the genius is said that sometimes verges on madness, the genius Spector crazy ...... He was born on December 25, 1940 in the Bronx as a child his father committed suicide because of money problems and marital, after this event in the life of the small Spector, moved with his mother and sister to California, a small town called Fairfax, that's when it began to fill with music and learned to play guitar, piano and bass. It was in Los Angeles where he began to frequent a studio where he was allowed to learn about the technical matters of music ..... His personal life does not matter here ..... but the legacy left to us hardly ... exceed what other producers and musicians ........ Listen to his voice and his piano ... is a luxury ....

Maaaan imagine all the demos he’s recorded that are in his music vault. I hope Sony releases them all and outtakes.
When Phil Spector starts to sing 'this is the w-a-y . . .', you think this could be an inept 'cover' - but then his hesitant, out-of-tune voice becomes soft and sad, strained and melodic. By the time he struggles into the first chorus, the piano makes you tap your feet, driving the song forward with a steady rhythm and some surprising little trills in the right places.
It has the feeling of a talented composer laying bare the composition.

Always interesting for us non-musicians to hear how a song comes together. We tend to think it drops from the sky whole, but it's pieced together and molded.

Beyond genius. He could write anyone under the table. This is one of the most beautiful recordings I have ever heard, better than any other version of this song.

I like the structure of this song in this recording changing key to go into the chorus. From listening to the actual records somewhere along the way they decided not to do the key change . It’s more interesting with that key change .
I knew him. He had a very wicked sense of humor that was often translated as "crazy" by the press. In fact, apart from his moments of oddness, he was quiet and felt deeply. Losing hair had a massive impact on him as all his insecurities came from height but get him on a good day and he had a lot of nice things to say.... Get him on an off-day (most of the time) he thought some things were funny to get someone back. Bit dangerous at certain times if he had snorted or drank a lot. About the girl, I have no idea, but I doubt he committed murder but his "other side" got the gun and it went horribly wrong. Phil was a man you could find crying by himself.... If you asked him what was wrong he would just say "crying makes me feel good".
Dan Ashton "the girl", as you call her, had a name, a family, a life, but no more. She was Lana Clarkson.
Phil Spector was an amazingly gifted artist who produced some of the sweetest music human ears have ever heard.
He is also a convicted murderer.
Alex Delarge - I think he also had Aspergers syndrome which I don't know if he ever had diagnosed, but you can plainly see it on RUclips when he appeared on the Merv Griffin show in 1965. One of the symptoms of Aspergers is the inability to read social cues, the inability to tell what is inappropriate and what is not, and my God, this guy is like completely out in left field with regards to that.
+Ka Boom Definitely an interesting clip (Merv Griffin). I don't know; he could have just been an eccentric asshole. Admittedly, he seemed to have some physical ticks. Ticks are often a sign of autism, but are not a part of autism. Autistic people cannot read a person's emotional expressions and sometimes cannot even distinguish people's faces. I do not agree with you that it was "clear." But I see your point. He did seem a little reminiscent to say, David Byrne.

No. It sounds much better. What it sounds like is Phil Spector's wall of sound. I can hear the whole orchestra and all the singers coming from this seemingly simple solo piano/vocal arrangement. It oozes with greatness.

mona2242 absolutely; why I brought it up. If you listen to the crazy music of Darlene Love’s ‘’A Fine, Fine Boy” it’s a lot like the Ramone’s “Do You Remember Rock ‘N Roll Radio’’.
you picked up on a similar piano sound...it is the same as on Imagine. Has that echo as if its being played in an empty hall
He produced ‘Imagine’ so that is the classic Spector sound that has never been emulated. The records he made with The Beatles, George and John are some of the greatest ever and Spector already had a few dozen of those and more after all the way up until his final single release ‘Silence is Easy’ by Starsailor.

What a treat. I love demos anyway, but this is so sweet and simple . Not a terrific voice, but so yearning and expressive. "I close my eyes and here it comes again...." 2:05, a faint and mysterious background part insinuates itself for a moment. Even on a clunky demo there is magic there.

I'm not sure why really, but I honestly love this! Simple, catchy chord changes there on the piano, and Phil's slightly off tune voice. Damn, it sounds great!
Guess this was recorded at the amazing Gold Star Studio? The sounds that could be produced in that Studio - specially when Spector was producing - were stunning. As proven with this track - nothing but Spector vocalising and accompanying himself on a piano - and still somehow the magic of that Studio has created a sonic effect almost like a full 'wall of sound' Production by the man. A real tragedy that the Studio burned down.
Thank you for the fantastic demo and the comments... I thought I was the only one who felt this way! I agree with you 100% about Phil Spector and his musical legacy. His music is brilliant and everlasting and nothing will ever change that. People make themselves sound so ignorant when they moan and snap out negative comments about Phil when I mention one of his songs or comment on his talent, as if anything he could ever say or do would ever change what it is. One thing has nothing to do with the other.

No, may he rot in hell for being a murderer and an abuser. His great contribution to music can't be argued against however.
Now, now, what a horrible thing to say. Who are we to judge. Nobody will ever know what happened that night. Even Ronnie and his closest friends don't believe that he actually committed murder. It could have been accidental, the way that he liked to play around with guns. He may have been drunk. So we don't really know the truth.

@Kathayne636 I don't know, I mean , I'm a massive fan of the music he's produced, written and arranged but his own singing voice is really all over the place drifting in and out of key . Weird irony I suppose, guy who writes some of the greatest pop music ever written can barely stay in tune from one word to the next .
This is too cool! Love these working demos from long ago. To my surprise, I prefer these quirky chord progressions to the version that eventually got produced. Should have kept them in there.

That's right. Phil wrote that song. I heard that it was about his father who passed away at an early age.
The epitaph on his father's head stone is "To know him was to love him". Phil used that for his first hit song! He was only18! His father committed suicide BTW.

This song is total genius. I first heard it in Brian Wilsons version and it was the best thing I'd ever heard, but now I find the original artist. BW's voice is sweeter which is what is needs.

It doesn’t need Brian Wilson or any other Wilson. The Beach Boys version lacked everything, way too fast, over-sang terribly, overuse of sleigh bells. This version is a million times better.

What's interesting is he switches it up a whole step from D into the key of E for the chorus but in the Ronettes and Beach Boys version they don't do that which I don't understand as it sounds better with the key change.

I doubt that Phil was drunk during this session. For that matter I doubt that he was playing for fun. I am firmly convinced that this demo was Phil's way of working out the song differently from how Ellie Greenwood (author) sang and played it.

What he's doing here is the epitome and height of living; it's inspired by others but is a reflection of who he is. It's nice when people are so into what they do that they can create something admirable. What a life. So many people today just want the lifestyle, but he was the life; it's odd how at this point in time so many musicians came into being and created what will never happen again; it's like it was a big adult kid fest because they were having fun too.

They both had mental health problems it’s just Phil never had anyone around him who’d tell him to stop going the way he was and it eventually ended up in tragedy.
He was so adorable. I know exactly what he's doing there. He wasn't sure of the lyric, but he knew how it should go inside his head. Such a natural producer of music. Wonderful to know the keys on the piano, to help him as soon as he got the inspiration. He probably dreamed entire songs in his head at night. He doesn't belong in prison. That's a travesty. I know he's innocent. He is our Mozart for the 20th century. It's deplorable that his resume is tarnished by that stinking night.

@mafred2069, I totally feel the same way you do. People are too quick to judge others, are they so perfect? Even Ronnie Spector didn't believe he was guilty of murder. She said his abuse was purely psychological, not physical. She should know, she lived with him. Ronnie also said that Phil was very romantic. May his tormented soul rest in peace.
I think while he was singing this all the background and arrangements were floating thru his genius mind and imagining the perfect end result. The way Phil lived his life, it was inevitable it would end badly. Greatest producer ever. Let him rest in peace; thank you, Phil
Despite all of the awful things that have been said about him, Phil Spector was a musical genius, and one of the greatest record producers of all time! We must keep in mind that he had deep rooted psychological problems stemmed from his childhood. His father committed suicide and he had a domineering mother. Yet he had so much amazing talent for such a tormented soul. My he rest in peace. And I might add --- Who are we to judge?

If any one would know it would be Brain Wilson, Listen to his interview about Phil Spector. Phil needed help , and didn't get it. He may not have been able to help. But you still have to credit him for his music.

Carl the voice Wilson released a cover version 1969.
That was the "First" Song that The Beach Boys recorded "Without" Brian. They were going through such a rough time. Capitol Records dropped them, after the debacle of Smile, Brian tried to come back but it was too little too late. So many amazing Albums came after that Friends, 20/20, Sunflower, Smiley Smile, and Wild Honey (Brian's Tribute To Motown). If that weren't bad enough Murray Wilson, Father to Brian, Dennis & Carl told them that they were finished and Sold Brian's Music Catalogue and din't give a penny of the Profits to Brian & Mike who helped Co-Write many of the Songs. It was the worst business move to make because as you know Brian's Songs were featured in Hit Movies like The Big Chill, Look Who's Talking, and of course American Graffitti, over the years Brian's Songs were next to Smokey Robinson's & The Isley Brothers Songs some of the most frequently played in Advertising in North America Selling Everything to Eggo Waffles, 409 Cleaning Liquid, Honda Cars, Shampoo, and Tea and for a long time Brian didn't make a dime. He got The Catalogue Back but Mike Love ended up suing him for back Royalties.

On the Trail had a guy who brought original vinyl was not published in Spain, for example The Forever Changes by Love, Pet Sounds, many of the Four Seasons ... I have the original vinyl Americans were a bit expensive .. cost 500 pesetas .. but it was worth .. I've spent most MP3 .. for comfort .. I guess you can find still in New York .. and somewhere ..

This was written by three people - Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich & Phil Spector. The same three people who wrote Be my baby, You've lost that lovin' feeling and many other great songs.

Numerous women, the Ramones, his wife Ronnie Spector report that they were threatened and felt they were not free to leave while this man brandished weapons at them. Eventually Spector murdered a woman took 5 yrs

LOL He drones on like a constipated rhinoceros in pain, about to drop from exhaustion. Lovely song though. Done by Freddie Mercury in The loveliest way Ever!! Carl W. does a great job too. Ronettes....not so much - way too boring a version, similar to this catastrophe, except they had voices.
