If you are learning Japanese, it would definitely be interesting to play Ghost of Tsushima in Japanese. But if don't speak Japanese yet, I will send you Japanese lessons where I teach you the kind of Japanese that real-life Japanese people speak today. Click here bit.ly/3oxv8H8
Yeah that review that says the female character was ugly. He doesn't realize the game setting is set in 13th century Japan. There are no pretty girls with big boobs running around killing Mongols. Women at the time probably are average looking because make up, beauty products, and plastic surgery isn't available at the time. I am Asian myself have no problem with what the women in the game look like.
I found something interesting while playing. As far as I remember I never saw the distinctive "imasu" and "arimasu". At all times the characters said "orimasu". It made me ponder that aru and iru are modern grammatical constructions.
I also find it very interesting with the comment about Japanese names, come to think of it, from a Japanese gamer perspective all those western/europe fantasy setting must have been quite a deal, not to mention the original word gets "katakana-ized"
My father, a Japanese-American sansei (3rd generation) and a huge Akira Kurosawa fan, saw my younger brother playing Ghost of Tsushima and sat down and watched him play through the game like he was watching a movie. The next day, i see my brother teaching my dad how to play and go through the story together. Thats how much this game has impacted my household.
Damn that’s wholesome. Something these last 4-5 years or so have introduced is a new age of gaming. Games like Ghost of Tsushima, Red Dead Redemption II, God of War, Last of Us I & II, would all do extremely well as cinematic projects like movies or TV shows, but do better in game form.
@Zamza Agreed. It's like that one quote once said... "No need to quote someone under the video" - _Zamza_ Something like that. I may be paraphrasing. =/
Dark souls was created by Japan then Ghost of Tsushima was created by the Westerners. Both really did well considering it's different from their style and different culture.
I'm playing Ghost of Tsushima right now and I love every aspect of the game. One of my favorite things is going to the fox dens and following the foxes to the Inari shrine. I love those furry little creatures.
Yeah it's lovely in game, but growing up in the UK you hear horror stories of Urban foxes climbing into people's homes and biting babies..... Plus mange!
I love how Japan can capture the essence of Europe’s medieval period so well in its games (eg. Dark Souls) and now the West did the same with a game set in Japan. This is a healthy cultural exchange.
@@ksamuel9 I meant the essence and the feel. The music, the architecture, the armor, the dialogue. At least in my own personal opinion, I felt like a medieval knight in a fantasy story, killing demons and dragons and the like. And I only used Dark Souls as an example, I'm sure there is other Japanese media out there that tries to capture the medieval period (eg. Maria the Virgin Witch)
The real credit for this needs to go to Kentaro Miura, as one of the main inspirations for Dark Souls and secondly due to doing what you are referring towards to a far greater standard. Honestly Berserk is so steeped in European history that it would take me at least an hour to list it all, but everything, from the philosophical concepts raised, the armour and architecture to even the systems of magic used owe their inspiration to European history and it's a credit to Miura's genius that he is capable of weaving all this together to such an extent that the majority of people believe it is internally developed. I am not poopooing the dark souls development team, but the aspects of European historical art and philosophy that they used (& dark souls isn't uniquely European inspired, the demon city is clearly a representation of Angkor Wat for instance) are but a sliver in comparison to what can be found in Berserk.
@@dorianjareth9198 Probably that guy is an Otaku who likes anime girl looking girls. Plus the screentime of Yuna, usually in anime those female characters who had a lot screentime are attractive. I'm fine with her looks, looks realistic to me.
If this was developed by japanese developer like Square or Koei Tecmo, most likely Jin Sakai will be a beautiful man with a hairstyle that exist hundred years later
@@masishta The game is about playing the Samurai power fantasy, not historical accuracy. They took some liberties (and were upfront about it) to achieve that goal.
It doesn't have to be like what you are joking about, the Japanese developer just choose the design like the game called Onimusa and it will look perfect.
The guy that complained about Yuna's looks sounds like he wanted her to be waifu material. Obviously it's irrelevant, but it's also done very often in anime and Japanese games, if there's gonna be a girl that has a lot of screen time, she's often very pretty.
I saw a Japanese game dev noted the same thing with Jin. While I'd say he was a pretty good looking dude, the dev laughed and said he'd never make it past the first run of female focus testers because 'he's too old and ugly' or something to that effect. Japan had the same mindset with both genders, seems to be a huge importance placed on youth and feminine beauty in both the men and women.
In america, devs dont put ultra sexy girls in the video games because of feminism or sometimes realism. For this one i think it is realism. Most Japanese games have girl that look very artificially enhanced on a physical level but it is part of the charm of their games.
@@samuraiedge9761 Horizon Zero Dawn and Tomb Raider and even Last of Us Part 2 have decently pretty girls. Agreed, America tries to aim for realism, while Japan isn't for the most part. Japan tends to be more stylized in terms of design. Another gaming philosophy. .
That person commenting that they wished the mouth movements were synced to the Japanese dialogue...welcome to the life and thoughts of a Western anime watcher in the 90’s and early 2000’s
The point about the names and terminology in the game being easy to remember is interesting. When watching anime and talking with friends, it's hard to remember names all the time unless you're really into the anime, so you just end up saying something like "I like that girl with the purple hair" or something along those lines.
Yeah, it's universally true that it's much harder to remember non-native words, including names. It's related to the case of nonsensible/meaningless words, because the brain doesn't store just the words itself in separate 'slots' like a spreadsheet, rather it creates association-webs with the word's all related info, and its meaning and familiarity are important. If there're no such things, then recalling the word is much harder. This works the same way on higher, text levels. It was a long time ago when I learned about this but there were a study in which people had to memorise a coherent tale, and the same amount random words thrown together, and the result was that they could only recall 15% of the random words while the story was remembered basically fully.
I watch a lot of japanese movies (with real actors not anime) and don't have too much trouble most of the times. But I had problems with the names in the anime "Golden Kamuy". They throw in many really hard names all the time. Besides japanese names you also get Ainu names in that anime.
I remember dreading games with many characters, where the names are not localized out of the Japanese. One example are the Danganronpa games. It's just brutal. For Japanese players these names are formed with Kanji, they have meaning, maybe puns. Without that it's just really long and hard to remember words.
WTF? Yuna was NOT ugly. She looked normal. Most likely based on someone that would look like a person that lived on that island in the 1200's. The face was also mocaped from the actress. Tsushima was also far south so it makes sense her skin was somewhat darker. My parents are from Hokkaido Abashiri. If you have a slight tan there, people think you're a foreigner even if you're from Okinawa. Lol.
@@sm0k3yyyyy Wtf it's not subjective lmao Yuna is quite literally just average. Anyone that says no just has a dumb expectation for what a woman would look like in the year 1200.
Well she doesn’t fit into the japanese beauty standard i’d guess.. but i’d say she doesn’t look ugly. She has a rough looking face but that just makes her look badass to me
Yuna actually looks like the person voicing her in the english version, just like all the other important characters look like their real life counterpart.
@@Kei-im9yh I think two or three of them are asian-american with japanese descent. The others were modified in the game to make them look "more" japanese.
While playing the game, I never thought about Yuna's looks at all. I saw her Jin's most trusted ally and friend. She is a strong compelling character. I'm glad the developers made her this way.
Yeah, it is very much "romanticised" telling of the tale. By all accounts, the Mongols and their vassals were incredibly nasty, but the Japanese were haedly saints and got utterly steamrollered. But it's a gsme where you are a one man death machine. If you can't recognise that the story is just for entertainment, but the atmosphere and setting is authentic, then I think you need to educate yourself more.
The "romantic" relationship between Yuna and Sakai is practically nonexistent, and all of their dialogue boils down to "we need to fight the mongols instead of running away."
that's because neither one can express emotions. It was painful to see how awkward they became with each other as they tried to communicate something other than the next fight. Im hoping that somehow they can find a way to connect romantically.
It has more flaws than just the historical inaccuracies. The main character is literally as unlikable as the guy from the first watch dogs and that made me want to get him as much as possible.
@bokudensuduharagmail Also, the hwacha which appear in this game wouldn't be invented for over a hundred years after the Mongol invasions, but I don't really get bogged down in details like that. This game is meant to be a kind of pastiche of premodern Japan, with Tsushima acting as a scale model of the home islands. The real Tsushima's topography is almost nothing like the environments presented in the game, but it's meant to give a broad tour of Japan's geography and seasons in a manageably small area. Hell, Khotun Khan is an invention of the developers as far as I know, and despite the references in the game to the shōgun the game takes place during a time when the shōgun had been temporarily displaced by the shikken. It's not trying to be a strict documentary, it's trying to be a love letter to a broad swath of time, place, and people, and I think it achieves that.
I'm surprised at the comments regarding the attractiveness of the characters. I found everyone fine looking for the time period. I even have a slight crush on Jin (Gotta love those hot springs). I guess people were expecting a more Koei approach?
Koei? So that they don't look japanese at all. Many japanese games tend to let japanese people look like hybrids between japanese people and anime characters. The Koei characters don't look like like real japanese people for the most part nor like real humans overall. Really anime-esque.
@@TonyRedgrave1501 It's a look people got used to seeing I guess. Characters like Nobunaga Oda in the Warrior's games look pretty Japanese but then you have Lady No running around with her chest out. I couldn't imagine such models running around in Ghost though.
the face they used for yuna is from the voice actress sumalee, she's half thai and half Filipino. She ain't ugly, she was cast cause she's a good actress
the same thing with jin....they didnt make him the macho big boy chad character...they made him look like an everyday joe so its relatable to see him go thru that transformation to the badass shinobi ghost
"The female character is ugly." Weird way to say they hired a good actress and used her face through motion capture instead of generating another piece of unrealistic perfection from scratch.
Sure but not every game has to be a fantastical experience. Sometimes people want to see a realistic version of an experience they can’t have themselves.
I am a westerner and I loved playing this game in Japanese with English subtitles, it was very much like my favourite samurai movie series, Lone Wolf & Cub! In Japanese I think it’s called Kozure Ōkami. I really enjoyed the different accents and ways of speaking Japanese from the elderly to the bandits, it seemed pretty authentic, at least from a foreigner’s perspective 😂 Thanks for this vid, I was wondering how it was being received in Japan.
Gun Ryu hi I found the 6 movie box set on DVD on eBay a few years ago. Here is a link for the bluray box set that’s currently listed. There are few listings at the moment... www.ebay.com.au/itm/353175050090
Game players used to see female game character whose beauty was almost unreal, like girls in JRPG games, so when a character like Yuna exist, they will considered her "ugly"
I played all the side misions and I did not find any woman that I would consider hot but also I wouldnt say that they are ugly, just average. If I had to chose some waifu material it would be probably the leader of that thief village or maybe the rogue archer... damn I already forgot their names :D
I am surprised you didn't include a certain interview where someone who is Japanese in the gaming industry that is a bit famous said something along the lines of, "This is the type of game we should've made." I forget his name as it was a week or so ago when I watched the video that was similar to this one. Still, you put together a solid video! Nice work.
Funny thing is, he said that Japan was beaten in the race to make a samurai game for the west, but westerners have been begging for Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin (the Yakuza samurai spin-off) for years, as it was developed in 2014. All they had to do was sub it and ship it, but he waited too long.
@@imac846 I think there are definitely people doing that, but I feel like that's inclusive of all the praise they get. When people say Sucker Punch did a good job, i always take it as including the fact that they respected the culture enough to integrate and involve Japanese people to make it a respectful depiction of a Samurai movie.
@@imac846 Have you been on ghost of tsushima Reddit? Go look at the anti Asian comments on Reddit. They seriously think one Japanese developer who isn’t even all that good who complained about the game must represent the entire east Asia. “Japan doesn’t even know their own culture!” “We love REAL Japanese culture, and love to learn about it, so we get a superiority complex!” Thats the type of comments Reddit has to say about this game. And they are passing it off as dark humor 😂😂
Thank you Yuta. Many westeners are curious about what would japanese or oriental audiences think or experience about common subjects. As Red dead redemption paid respect to the western movies and history, i really like that something like that has been done to the Kurosawa movies and historic period. I really liked almost all of the japanese video games i played.
If I as a woman made game reviews where I made a point of discussing how ugly and grisled the male characters are, it would be obvious how ridiculous and petty of a criticism that is.
Don't worry it's still petty and ridiculous as is. But I have seen thirsty women making reviews like that so it's just a certain subsect of humans that are this petty and ridiculous when it comes to how they view games and entertainment.
I am a straight man and if the main protagonist of a game is ugly I am possibly not gonna play it. When are people gonna stop pretending that attractiveness is not important? If your main character wants to be capable of overcoming obstacles then he needs to be strong and athletic. If he looked like some chubby wimp that would be a joke.
@@starfox300 Yes but athleticism has got nothing to do with attractiveness. Ugly people can be athletic or chubby and the same the other way. Having a beautiful face doesn't mean you won't be fat. And different people are attracted to different things. Why are you conflating athleticism and attractiveness? Now that's a joke
I saw a comment from the developer of the Yakuza series where he actually praised the fact that Jin wasn't particularly conventionally attractive, and that character designs like him and Yuna wouldn't really fly in Japan, so I think its a common thing in Japanese media that characters have to be attractive unfortunately. Thankfully not everyone agrees with that.
starfox300 1) having a pretty face or ideal figure has nothing to do with athletic ability. Look at real life olympians for comparison. 2) I am attracted to both women and men. I have literally never felt like my gameplay experience was negatively impacted by a female or male character not being attractive to me.
Yuta's looks are just realistic, especially when you look at what period the game takes place. A time before make-up and plastic surgery became accessible to everyone.
On the last "Abroad in Japan" podcast, Chris recounted a story of someone who heard this title as "The Goats of Tsushima" and was baffled about it. I'm not a gamer, but I do think that would make a fun game--but are there goats in Japan?
I agree with you, Yuta. I think this obsession with beauty when it comes to female characters is kinda creepy. Not every female character is stunning, just like not every woman in the real world is a model. I think past movies and games created this phenomenon that the female lead has to be pretty to be a lead, which is disappointing imo.
Apparently The Last of Us 2, made the mistake of including a Female character (Abby) who is muscular, and caused a few gamers to become very frustrated over a game having a female character in it they were not attracted to.
@@Psychol-Snooper people are mad at Abby because she killed their beloved character, not because of her appearance. Abby has been in promotional material such as trailer and teaser for a while and no one bats an eye until the leak came out. While the statement has some minor truth to it, majority is wrong.
@@tuna5936 I know you are the most clever and infallible person on RUclips and all, but you are wrong. Jim Sterling did an entire video on the subject called "Muscles Of The Apocalypse." You should go watch it so you can go back to knowing everything! XD
Based purely on watching several Japanese streamers on twitch and youtube, I'd say for males it's about 40% kill and 60% spare, while I have yet to see any female streamers choose kill on their first playthrough.
4:00 Ghost is a great game! I just platinum'd it! Do the females in the game have to be attractive? I mean... In regards to Yuna, she's a thief during the Mongol invasion. Stealing just to get by and avoid being raped and/or killed takes priority over looking pretty, just saying!!
i kinda thought tomoe looked pretty. Japanese culture in general has a way too high standard for beauty there. You can find many videos regarding that.
I'm not gonna lie, i love that this flies in to the face of those claiming that it is impossible for western finction to tell stories about other cultures without being disrepectful ("cultural appropriation" and such nonsense). Not only has this been disproven again and again, the reverse is also true: Some of the best adaption of western children/coming-of-age literature comes from Japan in form of the World Masterpiece Literature anime. Many of those have an astounding attention of details when it come to the portrayal of historical european settings, as far as I can tell as a european. (I mean it's not like I was alive in the early 20th century, so I can only compare it to our own historical movies.) Also, they often (not always) capture the spirit of the original perfectly, to the point where I would say some of these are the best adaption of the materical I know of. The only drawback I find is that they sometimes add too much filler, but even when they made stuff up it fit in it to the story nicely, it's just a bit too long.
Thing is, if you respect the culture, you can make something that's not insulting. Doesn't matter what culture you're from or what culture you're writing about. Though I have to admit if Jin didn't sound like a Japanese man speaking English, it would've been strange for me and took me out of the experience a bit.
That's a strawman argument. People aren't claiming you can't do it, just that it's often done lazily and badly. In the case of Japan, as a dominant country with a strong video games industry, nobody's going to claim that Japanese have been kept from telling their story so there isn't a power dynamic a play either. It's good that these ideas have so sunk in with you so that you're looking for it, even if you reflexively reject it.
For me as a Scandinavian (and loves history), Ghost of Thushima gives me a different and refreshing perspective of ancient Japan I love the game as well
And I've seen the boys actors the guy who voices Jin is handsome as hell and the woman who voices Yuna is very pretty. Clearly the person who calling the characters ugly must have low self-esteem issues.
@@ladynikkie I agree, they both pretty decent. I think it's the Japanese that have the "standard" of beauty in games or in shows. More definite in basically all of asian (South Korea, China, etc.) You just don't see average looking asians in games, they need to amplify the beauty, which makes sense. Pretty sells well.
Auto subs: hey guys it's utah The GTA comparison is a bit off, as GTA is made by a British company. Calling Yuna unattractive is rather silly, as that's not supposed to be important. It sounds like a critism of someone who likes anime girls a bit too much. I get that it's fiction, so "perfection" can be achieved, but the main point of fiction is that anything is possible, not that everything is done. As for names of people and places? That's all about the culture(s) you grow up in. I can't remember Japanese names for the life of me. Lastly, Japanese people were definitely involved in creating this game. Not to knock the effort that non-Japanese developers, artists, and writers for the game put in. I'd hope it would be the same if it were such a large game about any country.
@Lucky Captain Rabbit King Rockstar games is an American company, but they started out in Scotland firstly as DMA Design and then as Rockstar North in Scotland, which is the core studio developing GTA. I still personally see it as more of an English company rather than American
Yuna is modeled after Sumalee Montano, a half Thai/Phillippines actress so she looks more South East Asian than Japanese. I guess we can’t blame the guy who complain she isn’t hot. She has her charm, don’t get me wrong.
I had a similar problem playing Nioh as a westerner, while I enjoyed the historical elements, I had a hard time keeping track with all of the characters and their names since it was predominantly in Japanese. Interesting to see it goes both ways!
Yeah, I love Nioh but I think its story makes much more sense if people know about Japanese history and have some familiarity with japanese names as well, the game is not told in the western Hollywood like way and requires more active engagement from the players to be understood, so I can understand what you say because even when I'm learning Japanese I don't know much about historical characters yet
@@AutumnRed Indeed. Don't get me wrong I loved the game, and I learned a lot because of it, but it does require a lot from its players to engage in its story in a considerate manner.
@@Naruto735 yeah, it's part of the japanese culture to require that, even in the language you got to be actively listening and understand a lot of things depending on context, it's a cultural difference

I’m surprised no Japanese person pointed out that Katana’s didn’t exist back then during the mongol invasion. They had the precursor to katana’s as we know them, the Tachi. It was worn upside down compared to the katana. They did however have the Tanto Edit; the katana exists cuz the Tachi would chip upon hitting Mongol armor. It’s actually due to the mongol invasion that they engineered the first katana.
I have to say, I played the game in Japanese only, and it was, and remains, stunning. No, I don't speak Japanese, but I enjoy enough anime that I was able to pick up quite a bit during most dialogues. How Jin honours the dead if you now to the people who were killed by Mongols; how he speaks to his horse; the way he reacts when reflecting while sitting in a spring. Not to mention the haiku's. There were moments that I had tears in my eyes by the way in which he spoke the phrases I had chosen. This game is so near deep context of Assassin's Creed Origins because the language is so rich. Excellent detail, Yuta! Keep it up!!
I can't even find a copy of the game in Japan. My friends and I searched for copy at multiple stores in our area and it seems to be sold-out everywhere.
4:30 this got me thinking, I think it's good that some media chooses to use average looking characters. When we look at the impact of general media and the people/characters they've used -majority are very attractive- it's set expectations for average people that are unrealistic. They see these beautiful people on the screen and think that's how it is in the world, that that's how it should be, but then they look in the mirror and wonder why they aren't so attractive, which then is destructive. Then in time entire populations struggle with it like how it is currently. But if media were to use realistic characters, it would go a long way to changing that effect, although it probably wouldn't be as profitable so idk if it'd happen.
I wish the Zatoichi movie series got a game. The main character is a blind man with a sword in his cane, wandering through Edo Japan, helping the weak, gambling and giving massages. He uses his hearing during combat, if they get the ''echo-location'' part right it'll be a hit.
The "romantic" relationship between Yuna and Sakai is practically nonexistent, and all of their dialogue boils down to "we need to fight the mongols instead of running away."
@@nickd7036 It is lightly implied tho especially during the "Saving Yarikawa clan" arc.Sucker punch are probably saving it and some other things for the sequal which I think will probably be the second Mongol invasion of Tsushima.
im happy to see such positive reviews for this game, i can understand the 1 star from the dude who thought he was getting sekiro clone, but got an open world adventure akira kurosawa style samurai game, the rest are amazing reviews, i love this game, and happy to see many others enjoy it too
As an American, this game DEFINITELY gave me a lot of respect for Japan’s history and culture. It makes me really happy that Japan likes this game, it’d be really sad if they hated it cuz we freaking ruin everything😭😭. Also, coming from an American, I didn’t find it hard to remember names and stuff. I connect people more by faces than names but this game really set he name thing for me. All the names seemed to fit the characters so that helped too!!! I personally LOOOOOVE this game! Probably my absolute favorite right now!
For an American studio to make an authentic love and appreciation of things Japanese and done it with such excellence, plus giving a compelling, beautiful story, and giving an Akira Kurosawa mode in the game to give fans a special treat, is just astonishing. If the Japanese has given it such praise, then this shows how Sucker Punch Productions really outdid themselves. They have my respect and likely my money for this game.
I found the reviewers comments on sometimes finding it difficult to follow Western games quite interesting. I play the Yakuza series of games and tend to have similar issues. I can usually follow the plot but forget names of incidental characters quite a lot. I'm not sure I've picked up any useful phrases off Japanese games yet but thanks to covid I'll have more time to prepare for a trip to Japan.
You know, he's translating favoritism. From a Japanese perspective it had a lot of weirdness to it. (For example, the main character's name, JIN, is too modern. Translator told Japanese player to think of his real name as HITOSHI (which is also very modern) not JIN.") But still, that was a good game.
@@rafiqul84 @IchiroCharles JIN is a Chinese reading(音読み), not Japanese(大和言葉). Please imagine, A cowboy game set in the 19th century where the main character's name was "Muhammad"... normal in modern America, but historically strange, right? But most Japanese find this kind of incongruity amusing. It was a fun game.
Finally after years of Samurai games this is the most realistic one. I don't hate Japanese developers but they (Japanese) always made a samurai games but filled with fantasies and magic. So I'm so happy this game exists. Hopefully this will be the wake-up-slap for Japanese developers to start making realistic samurai/ninja games.
@@spacetaco048 I have hard time remembering names in general. I've got a friend at work who I've known for 4 months and I'm still not sure of his name. I think I know it, but im embarrassed to ask. Foreign names just make it that much harder for me.
This game has a lot of passion poured into it, I loved the setting and the characters, which I expected going in, I didn’t expect to feel so much for Tsushima or the ‘people’ that lived there. It was a surprise that I was genuinely invested in the farmers and villagers that were suffering under the invaders iron grasp. I have never cared about NPCs that are not part of the main quest but something about freeing a village and seeing people come back to clean up the mess and start over got to me.
have you gotten a new camera and/or lighting setup recently, yuta? the quality and new angle here really improves the video, i like it! also, nice haircut :p
I'm sure Yuna had plenty of time to work on her make-up while hiding from Mongolian invaders, amidst the slaughter of all of her friends and family, while participating in multiple battles to help win back the independence of her homeland. Sheesh.. that review was something.
What I loved about Ghosts is that it seems to be appreciating Japanese culture and trying to capture the realism. I actually appreciate that these characters aren’t “Brad Pitt” versions. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder anyways. Not everyone can look like perfection.
Huh, I thought they had many pretty girls in tsushima, even yuna was quite hot, i really miss japanese setting games, tenchu was bloody amazing, not having to kill japanese npc is a bonus, but yea more of these plz!!!
You kill japanese npc in Ghost of Tsushima. There are a lot of Rōnin and others who either help the mongols or just fight with you for other reasons. I'm glad they added them into the game because it's not a Samurai duel when only one opponent is a Samurai. The Samurai movie feeling comes up when you battle other Samurai or Rōnin.
TonyRedgrave1501 i mean yea theres the straw hats the bandits etc, but alot of them are option and the big thing is their not your only or main enemy anyway. I said not having to kill them, meaning not mandatory.
@@zerooskil7161 bro did you not play the game? Id say the game was 60% Mongols and the rest either Japanese bandits and killers or Ronin. (Gameplay wise) And the Ronin 1 on 1 fights?! Those are the more exciting bits. Hell fighting other Japanese broke it up from just Mongols which wud be stupid and unrealistic. Cuz no matter what country bad men will do bad things. Regardless of war. Play the game again.
"I bought the game based on an assumption it would be like Sekiro, and it was a let down." If only there was a way to learn about the game's content before buying. Guess the technology just isn't there yet in 2020... heh. In any case, it's great to see the overall Japanese reception be positive for this game. It is not only high in the current top sellers, it is also headed for the title of best selling Playstation exclusive in Japan. You could call this game one of the few bright spots coming from the western game industry, in recent years. When our game houses drop the politic agenda and focus on the game, they can do well. Who knew?
I read somewhere that the people who made the game got made tourism ambassadors or something like that for Tsushima. I have not watched the video yet, but considering that I think the response from the public will be positive.
The point about losing track of video games due to foreign names or concepts is a good one. Even in things like fantasy or sci-fi that delve heavily into setting lore and strange sounding names can leave me behind with information overload. I can sympathize with that reviewer's PoV.
And yet Asian Americans and white journalists had the audacity to complain and speak on behalf of the Japanese people themselves. SMH. As an Asian who lives in Europe, all I can say to those people is STFU. Anyway, Tsushima is easily my GOTY and one of my favorite games of this generation. It may have many bugs and glitches, but it's still a great experience, and it really made me feel as if I'm inside 13th century Japan. It's up there for me with Sekiro and Tenchu (OG gamers will remember that series). Also, I guess I can understand why Japanese folks call Yuna "ugly" (I disagree), since she isn't your typical "Anime waifu", just like how Jin isn't your typical "Anime husbando", but I'd say that she still looks fairly realistic with regard to the game's setting. A 13th century Japanese thief certainly wouldn't look like Ayumi Hamasaki or Aika...
Yeah, but it actually represents the 16 or 17th century Japan. Samurai didn't look like that nor didn't had swords like that in the 13th century. But I think that's all fine. They wanted the typical Samurai atmosphere from old movies. Most of these movies take place in the 16 or 17th century (edo period). The real islands topography is almost nothing like the environments presented in the game. They wanted to add the whole topography of Japan. That's fine for me too. The game doesn't have to be all accurate.

@@Buffypoodle It's not that, idiot. Most of the characters don't look Japanese, because the character designs are based on the voice actors who aren't Japanese.

I love how Japan can capture the essence of Europe’s medieval period so well in its games (eg. Dark Souls) and now the West did the same with a game set in Japan. This is a healthy cultural exchange.
Not a good comparison. Dark souls isn’t about America
@@TheWinterHorizon I meant the West, which refers to both America and Europe. America's roots (as a country) originated from Europe's medieval period.

I watch Korean shows on Netflix all the time and forget most names lol. They can sound so similar.
I watch a lot of japanese movies (with real actors not anime) and don't have too much trouble most of the times. But I had problems with the names in the anime "Golden Kamuy". They throw in many really hard names all the time. Besides japanese names you also get Ainu names in that anime.
That's me with any show or game, doesn't have to be Japanese but also English lol
I remember dreading games with many characters, where the names are not localized out of the Japanese. One example are the Danganronpa games. It's just brutal. For Japanese players these names are formed with Kanji, they have meaning, maybe puns. Without that it's just really long and hard to remember words.

Just like Battlefield games...
It has more flaws than just the historical inaccuracies. The main character is literally as unlikable as the guy from the first watch dogs and that made me want to get him as much as possible.
When a game is historically accurate it's not just entertainment but also crosses over into education, which is a win-win scenario for most people.

Having a beautiful face doesn't mean you won't be fat. i kinda thought tomoe looked pretty.
Not only has this been disproven again and again, the reverse is also true:
Some of the best adaption of western children/coming-of-age literature comes from Japan in form of the World Masterpiece Literature anime. Many of those have an astounding attention of details when it come to the portrayal of historical european settings, as far as I can tell as a european. (I mean it's not like I was alive in the early 20th century, so I can only compare it to our own historical movies.)
Also, they often (not always) capture the spirit of the original perfectly, to the point where I would say some of these are the best adaption of the materical I know of.
These are more like the exceptions the proves the rule.

@@ladynikkie I agree, they both pretty decent. I think it's the Japanese that have the "standard" of beauty in games or in shows. More definite in basically all of asian (South Korea, China, etc.)
You just don't see average looking asians in games, they need to amplify the beauty, which makes sense. Pretty sells well.
Auto subs: hey guys it's utah
The GTA comparison is a bit off, as GTA is made by a British company.

@Lucky Captain Rabbit King At least *try* reading at least the Wikipedia article on them.
Smh, the laziness and people these days.
This video needs to be seen by many more. Thank you for this translation
Yuna is modeled after Sumalee Montano, a half Thai/Phillippines actress so she looks more South East Asian than Japanese. I guess we can’t blame the guy who complain she isn’t hot. She has her charm, don’t get me wrong.
I'm loving this game, it rose my willingness to learn Japanese again, I've been getting tons of emotion from this game I'm really moved

They did however have the Tanto
Edit; the katana exists cuz the Tachi would chip upon hitting Mongol armor. It’s actually due to the mongol invasion that they engineered the first katana.

So happy you made a video about this Yuta! This is one of the most beautiful games that I have ever had the pleasure of playing
"many Hollywood films that portray Japan in a weird way."
This is a video idea in of itself.
I can't even find a copy of the game in Japan. My friends and I searched for copy at multiple stores in our area and it seems to be sold-out everywhere.

Great video as always Yuta!
That intro where you fell from the sky had me do a double take. I wasn't ready for yuta to instant transmission into his chair.

IMO Yuna is best waifu material that Sony studios ever created. For me, she is only rivaled by Kara (Detroit became human).
Lady Masako is best waifu
Chloe is waifu as well

The "romantic" relationship between Yuna and Sakai is practically nonexistent, and all of their dialogue boils down to "we need to fight the mongols instead of running away."

Amazing game
Great video
Im in love with the japanese culture in genaral and this game is all I ever wanted
im happy to see such positive reviews for this game, i can understand the 1 star from the dude who thought he was getting sekiro clone, but got an open world adventure akira kurosawa style samurai game, the rest are amazing reviews, i love this game, and happy to see many others enjoy it too
As an American, this game DEFINITELY gave me a lot of respect for Japan’s history and culture.
Great vid, Yuta!
Jinn is Arabic for demon/spirit. So it's a play on words as he is a stealthy ghost.

@IchiroCharles
JIN is a Chinese reading(音読み), not Japanese(大和言葉). Please imagine, A cowboy game set in the 19th century where the main character's name was "Muhammad"... normal in modern America, but historically strange, right?
But most Japanese find this kind of incongruity amusing. It was a fun game.
I played this game in Japanese because of zoro's voice actor.
But this time zoro doesn't get lost 😂
That specialist's review is epic!!!

I know right
Damn that one reviewer really going so low to complain about the female character being “ugly” that’s how you can tell the game is a 10/10
@Hersh Shorsh no, it's the facial features. There's plenty of dark haired and dark eyed characters in japanese media.
That was a nice video Yuta. Have heard of the game, but haven't played it yet (can't afford it right now). It seems a good game.
I love ur channel !! Thanks for the great content.
Ahh, Tenchu. There's a name I haven't heard in a long time...

(Gameplay wise)
And the Ronin 1 on 1 fights?! Those are the more exciting bits. Hell fighting other Japanese broke it up from just Mongols which wud be stupid and unrealistic. Cuz no matter what country bad men will do bad things. Regardless of war.

Yuta you are very eloquent and fair. Love to watch your videos.
"I bought the game based on an assumption it would be like Sekiro, and it was a let down."
If only there was a way to learn about the game's content before buying.
Who knew?
This game was developed for a game console that launched in 2013. And back then the PS4 had specs that was on par with a midrange gaming PC.
"Grand Theft Auto but made by a Japanese developer..."
So...the Yakuza series? Lol
The review that said the Japanese women in the game looks ugly... it's 13th century Japan. People back then looked different to people today. The game's character design actually looks authentic and realistic.
I think that person said that the woman character does not look japanese
Right? She's not ugly, she's a peasant without access to cosmetics and hair products.
Zet Yeah It’s not supposed to look like an anime lol
@@Buffypoodle It's not that, idiot.
Most of the characters don't look Japanese, because the character designs are based on the voice actors who aren't Japanese.
Is that why the developers used 16 century armors and weapons and fighting style in a 13 century japan? Is that what you called "authentic and realistic"?
I'm loving the game and always been a fan of Japanese history/culture so I'm playing it in Japanese with subs... can't get enough of the game its amazing! Good video mate!
