Seeing James change his views on the series and the channel's growth has encouraged me to look at games in a more positive light.
That's the best part of the channel imo, he has this positive way of looking at games while not being shy to point out the negatives. Sure, there's some stinkers he's looked at over the years, but it's pretty awesome seeing him cover games in a positive light in a landscape where negative looks at media tend to draw more eyes.
Same here, that's one of the things I enjoyed about the channel and seeing James growth throughout the years.
Man time flies
Hey, don't call me out like that!
Hell yeah. POSITIVE LIGHT!
Same and that helped me to enjoy everything more
The developers just waiting for James to tell them what to do to fix 3 for the HD remaster
Ty3 development team: WRITE THAT DOWN!
They already did years ago on the steam release as seen in the video.
Kart racing has been fixed (enough at least): the controls are improved, the rubber-banding isn't as aggressive,
And Quinkan enemies where updated to be vulnerable to ranged attacks (mele is no longer required, if you don’t desire to. in fact, explosive rangs (2 earth-stones) can instatnly kill most enemies.)
Still odd they didn't port it over to modern consoles yet... guess it must be more expesnive.
they have made a statement on why they haven't done as much with 3, I forgot if it was budget or losing source code but I know they said it in one of their Steam announcements
@@puffythedestroyer8878 Just throwing rangs to beat Quinkan? Well, the game becomes less fun if you do it that way. Sorry, I've just grown to hate simplicity, because I just don't want that personally. Yeah, button mashing can be a little tiresome, but I like having elaborate combat, and in Ty 3, it's actually decent, despite James not liking it. The Gunyip stuff being written out would just make me hate the game, because I don't want the whole thing to be just ONE thing, ONE type of adventure, and that's it.
I personally like the approach Sly cooper games take starting with the second one, where it's trading blows, dodges & counters that could potentially draw more unwanted attention if you don't take a dude out quickly.
In a more direct example The Jak games have a fun "One-Two-punch" where you can use one of your gun-modes to follow up your mele attack.
Ty 3's is a little bit basic in boring in execution, but i understand the thought process behind it's conception, "different enemies, different requirements" etc..
@@Zippy_Zolton Huh. guess I missed it.
Fun fact, Boomerangs actually originated as throwing clubs used for hunting so technically they are being used as intended whether Ty uses them in range or melee combat. If only the melee combat was good enough to support that
3:22
I believe Krome said they aren't fond of Ty 3 due to it being rushed out thanks to Activision.
And that they plan to maybe give it the "Director's Cut" treatment; put in everything they couldn't in the original.
Fingers crossed, as Ty 3 is probably the rarest game I currently own.
Wait, for real? I already liked Ty 3 as a kid! If they give it the deluxe treatment, that's a buy from me, zero hesitation.
@@FelisImpurrator
Don't quote me on that, I could be wrong, but I do remember seeing something like that on one of Krome's comments on Kickstarter I believe.
@@DaveMan1K I bekieve there was a handful of technical reasons too with the code, but I remember them saying similar on Facebook. Fingers crossed they do! Heck, Id like ports of the gba versions even.
The "training" just being push-ups IS the gag.
SOURCE: Me
Falterdan, Captain!
Fun fact: I actually asked Krome about the minions hanging around with Karlos, aka the cat girl and bunny guy. I don't have the exact wording on hand, but it was along the lines of Karlos leading a band of wastelander-style outcasts in the aftermath of Cass's fall. Of course the studio went through a lot of trouble and a Ty 4 proper was never made to capitalize on that.
That explains why we didn’t see Karlos and his gang in Ty 4
Jak 2 and 3: WE ARE THE EDGE!
Ty 3: And I took that hilariously.
'Inquisitively pissed' is how I'd describe NitroRad's face in the thumbnail and I need to use that face more in my own life
And I need to use the words "inquisitively pissed" now, thank you
what's ironic is that the Devil May Cry games also have (for the most part) a single button tied to melee attacks. Difference being that there's also different combos based on changing your button timing, which imo is a really smart way to teach the player to not button mash.
They also probably thought him only doing push-ups was pretty funny.
What can you say. Turns out those bunyip rangs are actually just really heavy.
What is interesting is that Ty 3 never released outside Australia & North America when it released back in 2005 & 2006.
Europe, Asia, Africa & South America didn’t get it until 13 years later with the Steam port in 2018, 3 years after Ty 4 released.
This meant if you lived outside Australia & NA (That includes me, as I live in Europe), you got Ty 4 before Ty 3.
You mean the copy I owned was american and my dumbass never realised because my PS2 was modded? I feel so dumb...
Yeah, I'm from the UK and I didn't find out there was a Ty 3 until I was in college
@@ZorkasIshmaelor Australian, which used PAL video format like Europe
@@lavenzavantas Yeah, either or. You're probably right , too bad I can't check cause I lost the game after moving years ago.
Finally, after so many years… He reviewed them all.
There's still the 4th one. Although not much to say on that one.
Nice pfp
@@Sammytheflaaffyfan thank
Still hasn't talked about the GBA games, though...
Again.
One thing I noticed from a recent Ty 2 replay is that the Crabmersible is actually the Frills' answer to Bunyips in 2! 3's use of them as Ty's Overworld vehicle is an awesome touch given the temporary allyship with Cass.
Since apparently Krome are watching these videos, gotta say first: I would totally buy an updated version of Ty 3, with a few twitches to make that combat more about that custom rang feature, so, please take notice :3
And to James: thanks for reviewing this one as well, finally. Never got a chance to play it, cause it wasn't released here, and being a big kingdom hearts fan, just seeing those quinkan designs always had me intruiged visually...but I knew you didn't like your old videos on them yourself anymore, so, been hoping for you to make a new one so I can see what the game is like. Thanks a lot for that :3
James wasn't joking in the Crow Country video about the sheer bulk of this video, and I'm blown away with the quality of this all! It's nice to be able to look at this game from a more analytical angle, same as the other re-reviews, given a lot of the mistakes made are valuable lessons that any indie dev who wants to make their own little 3D platformer can learn from, and apply to improve their own projects!
Or hell, Krome themselves can learn from it if they ever get the funding for a proper sequel (or QoLs for the Ty 3 HD port, since it never got the big update 1 and 2 did)
Considering that the canned Ty 4 was going to focus on the Gunyip. I can’t help but feel as though Krome Studios should’ve looked to Star Fox on how the Gunyip should function.
I hope they can eventually get the Ty 3 Director's Cut out... And then do that. A real Ty 4 with an upside down land take on Star Fox would be a good time.
Depends on which Star Fox they looked to. Because if it was Zero...hoo boy...
@@PC2000 64 should always be held as the Starfox Gold Standard
Or....crossover...perhaps.
@@fojisan2398 Assault had some pretty good ideas too honestly
I visited ACMI in fed square recently and was devastated to discover that they had replaced their giant Ty the Tasmanian Tiger zoetrope with a Cuphead one. This video is helping me cope a little.
Nah I'm not gonna lie, "Then make that three times" goes insanely hard, and I am tired of being afraid to admit it.
Krome did release a video years ago showing off a Unity test they made to show off Ty. I believe they said they aren't sure if it'll go anywhere but it's obvious that it's something on their minds.
45:15 Minor correction: There are definitely at least 3 generators you can activate with the Air Stone for various optional puzzles.
Really love this video.
Dennis does go insane with a bazooka in one of the levels killing many Quinkan. Thus showing how Ridge came to respect him so much.
FWB no longer stand for "friends with benefits"
it stands for "frogs with bazookas" now
I just love the fact that he's gushing over the intro and then he sees the fighter jet and the joy just evaporates
Ty was always one of the bigger gaming favourites of me and my partner's childhoods right next to Mario, Sonic and Crash.
I remember us bonding over the first game on PS2 as kids and a few years back, we actually played the Steam version of Ty 1 together like old times, we really need to get to Ty 2 and 3 at some point
Holy shit, your Lenny the Lyrebird impersonation was so good.
Another Ty 3 video after all this time. One of these days I should really try out this series, I found it through this channel and I’ve always been rather curious about it
1 holds up pretty well, not too long, not too short. Haven't tried the others, however. Should definitely give them a shot!
You definitely should. All 4 games have their positives. One of my favorite series of all time, very underrated.
IMHO Ridge gets even better when you see him in the Doomeranger comics and he's now a landscape architect, complete w/ new outfit that someone who spends a lot of time gardening would wear
he's literally Just A Guy now and it delights me. I love Ridge
8:04 I think Krome did this to test out the combat for The Legend of Spyro games.
3:25 I'm pretty sure they said quite plainly "We aren't going to the trouble of remastering Ty 3 just to see it flop again."
It is really fun to see you talk about your old videos and how you changed your opinion on a lot of aspects of them. I think at that time there was a big focus on like "mediocre and try hard is the worst thing a game could be", which affected a lot of reviews. I do really like a lot of your "recent" reviews really try to showcase what unique or interesting things games like these try, rather than just talking about purely if a game is good or not like a lot of reviewers I see.
Ty 3 was my first experience in the trilogy. While the game was ultimately flawed, there were some things I did enjoy, like knowing some of the enemies that became allies.
Ty 3 was my first game too, my brother bought it for me as a kid, but I never liked skipping the first 2 games though.
That's true. The fact that I decided with the 3rd game first ruined the overall experience with the character growth for everyone, especially sly.
Everytime James says Ty 1, I just hear Taiwan
See!? Me too!
The politically correct term is Chinese Taipei.
@@thesidneychanI thought the mainland was named West Taiwan.
@@FelisImpurrator lol indeed.

19:15 A gentle reminder of why Nitro Rad is the best reviewer in the game right now.
I'm half expecting Krome to hire James as a playtester for a proper remake of Ty 3.
Not going to lie, I love the year long pushup training XD I feel if they'd gone a little more over the top with it, with bombastic rocky-esque music, quick cuts at different angles, zoom ins and all that, just on Ty doing push ups, it would have been an amazing parody of stereotypical training montages XD
If the games' cutscenes have a lot of humor, maybe that push-up montage was the joke. Just ripping on the Rocky montage where he mostly runs but they do intercut other things. But they should have done Karate Kid. He's on his hands and knees to sand the floor or waxing a car. Probably way easier to render than actual workouts lol
Edit: While thinking about it….maybe the joke is he only needs to work out his arms…cuz boomerangs lol
Bro, the Shaggyfication is reaching its peak, that hair and chin beard are killing man, and that voice you used to mimic the lying bird hits really on the spot. Only thing left is a green shirt.
13:01 I can't really make it out, but if the line says "the dreamtime" and not "the dream, Ty", dreamtime is what the Australian Aboriginals' concept of an event where spirits created the world and their people and everything else in it is called. So the frog man has an annoying voice but he could be referencing a real spiritual concept.
Tho again, I'm not sure which he's saying so he could just generically be calling it "a dream" lol
When you mention it, it _really_ sounds like he's saying "dreamtime", which with that context really checks out.
Dreamtime would be the respectful term, from a First Nations perspective. But the ambiguity of it also just being "dream time" - as in time spent asleep - works fantastically with the writing of this universe.
The Dreaming and Dreamtime are used interchangeably in Australia with Dreamtime being the more common term. He's absolutely saying Dreamtime in that scene. Bunyips are common in Dreamtime stories so it's a pretty smart choice for a home world.
That lenny the lyrebird impression was impeccable
Didn't finish watching the video yet, but given that the section about melee combat being tedious is this long, I gotta say this:
1. Quinkan come in different colours, each colour immune to a certain element. You can totally kill quinkan by throwing rangs at them, you just need to have the right element equipped in your rang.
2. Afaik, all quinkan vulnerable to earth element, so once you have access to earth runes, you can start building your homing-explosive-multithrow rang of death and totally nullify the challenge of the game, as far as the combat goes anyway.
Okay, nevermind, you talk about this right afterwards
its really nice seeing you re-review this now that youre much better at actually reviewing games. this, along with the creation of the nitro ramble episodes, shows how much your content has evolved and for the better
Yo, WTF!? I literally JUST rewatched the previous 2 reviews and was thinking about how you should do a new review of this one. Dude WHAT!?
With the comparisons to Ratchet and Clank all throughout the video, I'm honestly surprised James hasn't covered any of them yet.
I've always seen this in the same way I do Pac-Man World 3, a super WEIRD game that is DEFINITELY a downgrade from the first two, but it still kinda has its own charm. Well, also the fact they're both third games in a trilogy, going in a far darker and edgier direction with their style and story, and often completely forgotten by most with the few who DO remember it either being polarized on it or absolutely REVILING it.
12:39 I can imagine, in a more realistic style, Ty’s jaw dropping its full species-staple 80° gape in both horror and amusement
I do wish Krome got to flesh out ty 3 like they had hoped but it got the shortest dev cycle of the 3 games, theres a ton of scrapped content including a third whole hub world
The Bunyip Elder sounds strangely familiar... wait, is that the guy who voiced Eldred from Sacrifice?!
...huh, apparently it isn't? I was sure it was Paul Eiding, but turns out it's someone called Gregg Berger, who was Hunter in the original Spyro, and apparently he was Eeyore in a bunch of Winnie the Pooh games.
18:40, Lenny sounds like he's talking about Balatro, but chess. ...it is uncanny how good of a Lenny impression you're doing.
If they did a post-apocalyptic Outback nowadays, Ty would probably be called a Raggedy Tiger by a Tina Turner expy.
9:30 This "training montage" remains as the only thing I remember about this game since I first played it 17 years ago.
(…Holy fuck it's been 17 years since I was _nine…_ )
Time sure flies, doesn't it? I realized it's been 12 years since I graduated high school and I had a bit of a crisis with that...😅
When you were taling about the movement and combat having to feel good in both aspects.
It reminded me of this older platformer. I cannot for the life of me remember its name, but it did this thing where the controls would change depending on if you were engaged in combat or not.
On paper it sounds great, different move sets....in practice it was TERRIBLE. Oh my god. The jump was standard fair, High floaty jump for platforming, but in combat the jump button became this quick dash. What counted as combat? what would switch the controls? I couldnt play it long enough to figure it out. I just remember being in a platform section with enemies firing and having my nice big jump to an easy platform turning into a quick dash to my death. over and over again.
The only 3D platformer game I can think of at the moment that switches your controls based on if you were in combat or not is this game called Kya: Dark Lineage, but I'm not sure if that's the one you had in mind. As far as I can say on that game, combat could've been handled better but it wasn't the worst thing ever.
The Ty re-review I’ve been waiting for years for, glad to see it’s finally out .
Same lol
Nitro - don't know if you're already aware, and I know this is just a demo right now, but holy cow does The Big Catch deserve a video!
Its movement is as polished and as granular as Pseudoregalia's, with the added toolkit of a honest-to-god real grappling hook and some other differences! It even has a very intuitive wallrun that essentially serves as a granular real wall jump!
I was expecting nothing, got absolutely blown away. I really, really want to share this game to more people.
Your content and channel growth is very well made and deserved! I always enjoy your wonderful videos and sharp insight!
When I first started watching you, and I started watching you a loooooong time ago (when you posted your Blinx video; the first game I ever played), I only kept watching you because you were talking about games relative to my childhood. And even if your opinions differed from mine, I still enjoyed the fact that someone else knew these games existed. It was like sharing an experience even if it wasn’t sharing a feeling.
But you’ve changed. You’ve matured with me. You’re someone now that I think younger me would have idolized.
I appreciate you as a person and I’m 100% sure that my opinions on platformers and just games in general would be far worse had I never had you in my life.
I never personally played ty3 when I was younger but you made an impression of it in my mind before I ever got to see it for myself. But throughout the years you’ve opened your eyes more to things and by proxy I have as well.
I never want to see the end of you making videos. I know you have no clue who I am but I’ve always considered you someone I care about and even aspire to be.
the thing i like about Nitro Rad is he never goes "aw this game sucks and theres a reason platformers died" he actually makes me wanna play a lot of games i slept on or was curious about
Another Ty review? Neurons activated, I am popping a bottle after work and binging this.
thank you for the video, love the highlight on the change in perspective from the start of your youtubing!
Glad you were able to finally make this review! Been looking forward to it for a while. Probably the best example of your growth as a channel and what makes you stick out to me compared to others. You're more willing to give every game a chance looking at its strengths and weaknesses and what they could've done better or improve, rather than the funny "videogame bad I'm gonna riff on it the entire time"
I'm so excited to watch this when I get time! Thanks for all the uploads James, both your regular scripted videos and your new 'ramble' videos have been amazing!
The writing and the rang customization are what I loved about this game. Man, I hope this gets the full "we can rebuild this game, stronger, faster, Aussie-er" treatment.
Edit: Also it's the purple one, which is pretty awesome.
The Dreaming and Dream Time are interchangeable names as far as I can remember
Its been so fun seeing you revisit these games
Honestly kinda was on brand at the time for a trilogy and then a spin off with wildly or slightly different game play, all arena ratchet deadlocked, jak x combat racing.
A sequel 2 years in the making
I saw your comment and I was like "this guy seems familiar" until I realized I've had you added on Steam for a year or two now lol we met playing... Operation Raccoon City, I think?
@@EmilyKimMartin oh yeah, I recognise you too
oh boyyy ive been waiting for this one. ty is one of my all time favorite games, and i love the videos youve been making on them. i still play them on my gamecube from time to time
You are so obsessed with this game. I have seen your og vids about this series countless times. I love your content!
“My thumb was bleeding but my shorts looked like that” perfect video, 10/10
Thank you for covering this series, it's been such an important part of my life. I found this channel looking for Ty content of any kind back when you dropped those original reviews, so it is unimaginably cathartic to see your more critical lens as a channel take a look at these games years later and come out of it with a genuine fondness for them. Keep killing it man, I'm around for whatever you have planned for the future :>
I played Ty 2 a few years ago thanks your channel, and really enjoyed it! Thanks for your videos!
Incredible potential to do really cool stuff in the future...well, I guess that describes not only the Ty series, but also how much this channel grew from all those years ago; be proud of how far you've come since then. I vaguely remember playing the original trilogy on Gamecube back in the day, and it's nice to know that despite some flaws, it still has merits even in the modern era of gaming. Here's hoping that some day in the future, that cliffhanger ending will be continued!
I was entranced like a little kid staring through the candy shop window while watching this. I had replayed the other Ty games, but was waiting for 3 to be remastered. But it's been so long that I had completely forgotten about so many aspects. Hearing the music just brought back so mant great memories. And seeing you change your views really mesmerized me and makes me want to be that open to critiquing myself
Yes! Huzzah! You updated your review! Ty 3 was the first one I played actually. I remembered liking it a ton and I was confused about your first go around, then you brought up recently how different your review style was back then, an I was wondering how it be for you to re review stuff with a fresh perspective.
I think it paid off for you, this feels much more fair, cause even back then, I knew it wasn't perfect.
I love these hour+ vids from you! Keep up the fantastic work
I doubt you'll look at Ty 4 again, but I always thought it was interesting how 4 is a sequel to the GBA games in particular, and I remember loving Ty 2 on GBA as a kid. It would be cool to see those in the same way you did the Frogger or Jimmy Neutron GBA videos if you ever need more Ty in your life.
I really appreciate the dedication to redoing the trilogy. The older reviews were some of the first videos of yours I ever saw. I liked them enough that I subscribed, but I'll definitely say your mindset in these newer reviews is refreshing.
Weirdly Ty 3 was the only Ty game I played growing up and didn't touch the other 2 until the HD remasters came to consoles. I remember getting it cause I thought the Quinkan were Heartless from Kingdom Hearts. I remember playing it and being confused a bit, but I loved the game a lot. I played through the whole game quite a few times and would often just drive the Crabmersible around to have fun.
Fantastic video James. This was really cool to watch. Thank you for all your efforts 🙏😃
this video and the old one’s like night and day! it’s really interesting and cool to see how you’ve become more optimistic with your views on this game and overall.
man it feels like you're just pumping out videos these days, i love it. nitro ramble was such a good choice if they take as little time to make as you make it seem, feels like just yesterday the pennys big breakaway video came out.
Another Nitro Rad video this week, hell yeah!
Great video. I played Ty 2 a lot with my little brother back in the day, but never got around to 3, if it was even released here in Norway. These games are so charming, and seeing you re-review them have been a ton of fun. Hope we'll get our dream TY5 one day.
I played through all these games with my mom as a kid, we used to try and race through to see who could 100% them first and I have a ton of fond memories of the whole series, real fun to watch you go through them all again :D
Eyy, he's reviewing Ty 3 again it's nice to see him re-review it after so many years. Cause I remember he was pretty negative in the first review and I'm glad that he's opinion did changed over the years. While I do agree it's flawed I played Ty 3 when it first came out and I enjoyed it. I thought the Quikan were a cool idea as the main enemies since they are based off the paintings from the aborigines. The soundtrack still slaps with one song that plays when you leave the town for the first time being my favorite.
Thank you for re-reviewing these games. It really shows how much you’ve grown as a content creator over the years.
You've been hitting a crazy stride as of late, and now an hour long video on top of all that? Hell yeah bro!
I really like how the world was done in these games, I remember playing a lot of Ty 2 as a kid on the PS2, never really played the 3rd entry though. Great job on re-reviewing them all! Out of all 3 games after seeing the videos, Ty 3 is the one that deserves more work put into it than just polishing it, maybe even some new content for Ty to go around with, as well as fixing some of the pacing issues with the gunyips
Man, 10 whole years
Rad always had the best visual gags and choreography. The small stuff, too. Like his "ty one and two" at 2:53 hidden in his jacket.
Every part of his vids are entertaining and had thought put into them.
Great video! I like ehat you've been doing lately Rad. Great stuff!!
Just want to say thank you fellow canadian, really like your progression through reviewing video games and nice hairstyle.
This was my most anticipated video from you since you first reviewed the Ty series years ago, and it’s an hour long
Today is a good day
You made the game look pretty cool at certain points. It feels like they were trying to make a Ratchet and Clank game with like half the budget Insomniac had. I never played Ty 3 growing up, despite owning and playing the first 2 games a lot, and the custom boomerang mechanic actually makes me want to play this game sometime, despite some of the other issues.
Less than a minute ago, and it's Ty of all the things! Thank you Nitro, very cool
sound design observation : james. whatever you're doing with the mic and the mix is perfect.
What the hell was that thumb story lmao
The boomerang chassis with their stone slots look like FF7 materia weapons. Love it!
I remember playing the first three Ty games as a kid and I remember liking this game fine, but I think I liked playing the first two games more, especially Ty 2. With that said if they ever do a re-release for something like Switch or PS5, I might pick it up along with the first two games since I haven't played those games in years due to me and my family sold them a long time ago. I did play Ty 4 last year and it was fine, but if they ever do make a Ty 5. I would be pretty excited to see Ty don those rangs another time. Anyways, solid video as usual. I really like the way you break down and analyze the games you review while sneaking in some pretty funny comedy. That bit where you did an impression of Lenny the Lyrebird got a good laugh out of me. I look forward to seeing what you have planned for us next. Also, that shadow bat lady's daughter is probably one of the most adorable video game characters I've ever seen.
Injuring oneself on the PEI trip is a canon event for anyone in NB or NS. Awesome vid!
James, I just want you to know this is the only channel I have notifications turned on for. Long time fan!
Just finished this when you announced you were releasing this vid, what timing!
Love ya content! Keep pushing it out mate 💪
“Oh I’ve done it once or twice.”
“Well now we’re doing it THREE TIMES.”
seriously that line goes so hard I like that you acknowledged that
