I am so thankful I found this. Robert Joseph Stark from Anchor Point AK, you have been blessed with so much wisdom. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the voice of your experience and the advice you share in the last six minutes brought tears to my eyes. I also appreciated his concern for re-introducing animals and resolve to do so only once he and his partner were certain they'd be present all year for the welfare of the birds/animals. That he was able to speak "free-form" so genuinely from his heart and experience has left me deeply impressed. I feel such respect for this man. Thank you for the video and for sharing so openly. Great garden! I have loved gardening since I was a little girl. Now we live up in the Rockies off-grid at 8750 feet elevation and have a similar growing season to yours...last year due to El Nino, we got 8 feet of winter snow...I couldn't even see out my kitchen window, but usually we only have about 4 to 5 feet. We, too, are in the plant and wait stage of our orchard trees. Some are 5 years old now. Still no fruit except for a few cherries...I need to separate one of my rhubarb plants since it is HUGE...There is always something to be done on the homestead and each year provides many lessons to be learned...Thanks for the great video!
You need to prune your fruit trees to get fruit growth, prune in winter or early spring. Try and arrange your trees with branches in a 5 branch star like shape so all the fruit will get sun, prune vertical branches and branches that are growing inward toward tree or crossing over shading branch below/above. Good Luck.

Awesome! That guy is very real and down to earth. I like how he stresses the importance of enjoying the journey while you are living with less than you were use to and not having everything perfect!
I have been watching your vids since you sat on that log in your red jacket. This guy is the most interesting passionate person you have ever interviewed! I want to see where he is at in one, three and five years.
Really entertaining and educational. I have no doubts Bob is going to be successful on his homestead. Big Kudos to the video editor, I know it was a big job.
Cheers from Valdez. You may have heard this, but you should really look into the Back to Eden method. Wood chips and leaves man, you need to cover everything in it. It has so many benefits for people in Alaska. You are growing soil, with very little work, something that we need here a lot. Increases the insulation of the soil, extending your growing season, especially when combined with a low tunnel or other protection. Put a 1 foot thick layer around your trees. If anything can make a fruit tree grow in Alaska, it is the fruit tree. You have to provide it with a living soil to be in. All the fungi and bacteria that is needed for soil, will do the work for you if you just put wood chips and leaves (leaf mold) on top of your soil. Composting in itself will never make soil. It makes more compost, which is food. But it doesnt produce soil. Mycorrhizal fungi in a symbiotic relationship with living plant roots actually transforms our sandy, rocky land we live on, into rich soil. The wood chips will reduce watering, weeding, and soil erosion. Your apple trees are perfect, as they are highly mycorrhizal supporting, and you need a mycorrhizal network in your soil in order to keep a living soil that you dont have to tend. They reduce pests, and create a more permanent garden, that would still keep making soil even if no humans were around. It is the idea to grow soil, instead of plants. Plants grow themselves. We need to tend to the soil to allow the plants to grow. Wood chips can be free in large quantities. The guy that has the videos on back to eden, is pretty religious, but that method has extreme merit and is well worth checking out. The proof is in his gardens. What you describe taking out of the chicken coup, that soil, is what you can have everywhere on your property. Especially when combined with chickens and your own composting. While best to compost in place, just toss all waste back onto where it came from, adding home compost can help. Eventually after 2-3 years though, the wood chips in full decomp will provide every nutrient any plant needs, in abundance. The soil will be airy and accepting of water. And, your ground will be insulated more from cold.
Said it before and ill say it again there arent enough chips n leaves to go around for our current model of farming. Were gonna need a TON more trees planted and several decades for tem to grow to size.
I'm only 5 minutes in and has to post saying your probably the happiest person I have seen on RUclips. First time I posted before watching a full video.
"Drop what is bringing you down." That's a key in living a happier life. It's not easy, sometimes it seems crazy to do it, but it makes a HUGE difference in your overall health and outlook. Once you start dropping things, including people, you'll understand that pride doesn't come from what other people think, it comes from what you've been able to do and how much you're actually living.
So I'm watching this for the first time and he brought up the book Rich Dad Poor Dad! I read that book when it came out years ago. This guy reminds me of me and he is doing what I'm planning on doing once my youngest is ready to go out on her own! My advice to this guy is to start and finish each project before starting another. It makes life a whole lot easier. Great video thanks!
i love the passion he has in his words and description of what he has done and what he is going to do. The fact that he came to this lifestyle in early age inspires me. There is no doubt you have to work from the early morning till the late evening but still this looks charming. I'd have loved to live where and do some great job, that could be a great way to escape the routine.
This is very inspiring to me. I am still young I feel. (28) I have a small 3 acre farm I got this year in southern Michigan (mostly focused on remodeling the house at this time.) My mom and grandmother got me into gardening veggies when I was younger. I was the one who brought the idea of fruit trees to my mom and so far the apples have been rewarding and alot of fun although some years the late spring frost hurts the blossoms alot and then we have very few apples on those years. I tried adding pears with no luck so far and blueberries which were alot of fun. Like you I plan on adding all sorts of different types cause why not. Like the old sang goes you reap what you sow and that makes me think the meaning is you have to plant alot of life seeds in order to get what you're after, no matter what that is youre after in life. god bless you and keep up the great work!
I have never had so much fun watching this up beat guy . I have a place for years not off grid but mostly ,one thing at a time .I am over 70 and have a great place. Everybody vacation here life is good.
Wow ! I am so happy that I found your video on you tube today. Very interesting and informative. I have been wanting to move to the Anchor Point general area of Alaska. Love what you are doing. I am now (71) years old, and I can't do EVERYTHING that I used to do, but I would really like to do a small homestead farm venture in Alaska. I like being self sufficient as much as possible. Thanks for your excellent video! Bill Pysell
Bob Stark you're an inspiration to all people our age man! I loved the tour of everything! You NEED to do your own channel, and show people what you're doing, like, everyday. Keep it up man!
Bob, I have to say...this video was pure enjoyment to watch. The love for how you live and what you do just emanates from you! Many thanks from Wisconsin
The passion this guy has for his farm is refreshing and infectious! He’s good people. Awesome energy and a dope soul! He needs to teach. Love that he’s taking risks and trying things others wouldn’t. Go you good thing! ✌🏽
Thanks a lot! I definitely don't feel like a teacher or that I have anything to teach, but thanks of reminding me that maybe I do. Definitely taking risks and failing over and over again. I appreciate your kind comment.
This is absolutely the RIGHT answer... AND, if he looked around at what his "neighbors" are doing to have great gardens, he would already know that. Guess what one of the favorite foods of moose are??..... Apple tree's, berry bushes, and cabbages! I already been there, done that! lol
Sawyer Rob yeah I cringed at the trial an error with the chickens, you can't have live animals without doing some research. Cool guy, love his spirit and total admiration for going off the grid.
Hi Bob, thank you very much for this wonderful, down to earth story, it was like an ocean of really fresh air, was really sad when it was over... Wish your trees stay well and very fertile after all the effort and passion you watered and planted them with... Hope you stay well, you have my deepest respect, thanks again!
Wow. I'm dizzy with his passion. Amazing how much energy you can have when you're not connected to... energy. Keeping up with the Jones' means a finished bathroom? Maybe carpeting? Right on. Hey, there are videos out there about urban orchards. Obviously this isn't "urban", but, from what I've seen the "orchards" are mostly suburban lots that line the property line. They're trimmed back to hedges. They produce more fruit, more frequently, and often stagger production through different varieties. And, all the fruit can be picked without equipment -- nice and low. Hmm... the boat became the anchor while underway.... something to remember, I suppose. ...every little thing's gonna be alright... right?
I just discovered this video. This guy has so much wisdom about life and I love his enthusiasm. You do not need to live off grid in Alaska to learn from what he has to say. Wonderful interview and video, especially at the end when he talks about his life philosophy. I wish all the best for him and hope to find an update on his life and his farming.
Very informative and Bob is great at telling the viewer about farming and living in Alaska. I enjoyed his sense if humor and stories. Thank you for sharing. 💖
My favorite Bob quote: “there’s some good money in fruit man.” I’ve been tryin to insert that into as many social situations as possible. Mixed reviews so far, but you gotta try. Love Bob man, such a good dude
J S W: We still haven't made much money in the fruit... however, I have a beautiful baby and lovely wife, and they are worth far more than money! Fruits of labor are paying off!
It's so uplifting to see and hear this great guy who loves what he's doing and is doing so well. Carry on, Bob. You are so popular and so deserving of all the good comments. You can get info online on just about any subject, so it won't be long before you are an expert and will be helping beginners. Good luck, and God Bless you.
Every morning I usually start my doctorate study in the Bible and I for some reason wanted to see this video. This is the best that I have ever seen. This guy you interviewed, you never saw anything fake what so ever. He is really into what he does and is really going to do what he says he is going to do. This couple will really make themselves proficient on these 20 acres they have. My hat goes off to them and may everything they endeavor to do in Alaska where they live prosper. If you can, get this word to them for them. I sure would love to come and see these folks. and buy some of their produce from them. Bishop Kirby.
Thank you sir, I enjoy starting the day with the Bible as well. My favorite book is easily Ecclesiastes, being reminded that chasing the carrot doesn't pay off in the end. I am no longer a couple though, sorry to say, I am rolling solo nowadays. But I really appreciate your kind comment and the reminder to study the Bible. Thank you.
worry is your enemy , the things you can control ..." well let's not kid out self's you really have no control" The things you can't control and the wisdom to know the difference is all about the little things. How you feel about things and how your react to them. Having a list of things to do keeps us moving but can also confine us. Having time to really plan each step is a grate thing but as you all know it never goes as planned so let go of control and roll with it and keep your eyes on the small things. Are you warm in the winter? Are you cool in summer? Are you fed through all? Are you loved ? Do you feel Joy in your life. If so you are Blessed beyond all else. Share as much joy and love as you have and all is well !!! Grate video really loved this place almost like he pulled this image out of my head and brought it to life.... Thanks for letting me know it can be done and that this life is out there for all who will go get it.
I enjoy watching your videos, especially this one. This guy is super cool and fun to listen to. He had my attention from beginning till end. I agree with the other comments which state he should have his own channel. I liked that he teaches off topic a bit about the subject at hand as he goes along about how things work and also references some of his topics. I know he will do very well.
FIRST TIME I HAVE WATCHED YOUR VID, VERY INTERESTING BOB, YOU HAVE THE SPIRIT IN YOU TO MAKE IT WORK YOUR A MAN OF MY OWN HEART BOB, KEEP THAT SMILE UP, AND I PROMISE YOU, YOU WILL HAVE THE LAST LAUGH, GOD BE WITH YOU.
(In reference to your convo at 33:20) Cryosote. Not sure if that's spelled correctly, but here in the southeast it's a mixture of Kerosene and Motor Oil. Now I can't say the tree huggers would be too fond of you bragging about using it, but it DETERS ALL BUGS.
Creosote is a bush that grows in the southwest. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larrea_tridentata kind of confusing those two things having the same name but a pretty neat idea. This this is the first I've heard of it, I might have to try that.
You are a great person I'm a great grandmother of a zillion kids and I immediately felt that you could be one even though I have never met you I feel so proud of you you have learned a lot of the important things and never let go of the beauty of learning from others especially wise ones learning is knowing what to accept and also what to delete .Iam just learning the computer things and you are the first person iam reaching out I don't know if you will get this but I just had to try Grandma Larkspur
Bob, are you saving all of your kitchen scraps, like egg shells, potato skins, coffee grounds, tea bags, veggie stems, etc. You probably are, but if not, it makes good compost. My uncle had a small farm in Pa. and he had blackberry bushes at the border of his property. I will never forget the delicious blackberry pies my aunt made. I have noticed that blackberries are filled with huge seeds lately. They get stuck in your teeth and I don't enjoy these blackberries. If you grow your own, they will probably be better. Elderberries are great. They can be used as a medicine, like honey. Blueberries are great too. You can't just eat half a pint. They're like popcorn. I planted a pear tree in my back yard and got pears after two years. They grow fast, and it's above the roof now and needs a good trimming, but it hasn't been producing the last couple of years. The squirrels used to steal them and would always leave me one pear. It's weird.I didn't know squirrels were taught to be polite.
That was very observant! You know that was probably all the interviewer could smell as soon as they walked in... I wondered why he didn't show them the back room 😂😂😂
I served with Stark in Iraq many years ago. He is a great guy and I'm happy to see how well he's doing. Wish you the best of you see this dude.

I love the way you look at things. Very optimistic. Makes me want to plant trees and a garden. Haven't planted a single plant in over 5 years.
It's never too late!
Really entertaining and educational. I have no doubts Bob is going to be successful on his homestead. Big Kudos to the video editor, I know it was a big job.
He needs his own youtube channel. His energy, knowledge and enthusiasm are AWESOME!!
no youtube channel... but we do have a website now... www.secretgardenalaska.org
Well, not at all a "tiny home", but a great video. I like his realistic point of view, and his cheerful attitude. Beautiful house and garden.
Thanks for watching!
Oh wow, the cabin looks so much larger on the inside. He has a great personality and will do well. Thanks for sharing. Janice
Thanks for watching Janice!
Chris & G Travels hi what's price price of this in Alaska ..
Logan Cressler good advice!!!
can i listen to your girlfriends album?
I love this info, it is very educational. This should be taught in schools.
Said it before and ill say it again there arent enough chips n leaves to go around for our current model of farming. Were gonna need a TON more trees planted and several decades for tem to grow to size.
If the entire world saw the amazing benefits of using just chips n leaves, and they were hungry enough the entire world would simply be deforested.
I'm only 5 minutes in and has to post saying your probably the happiest person I have seen on RUclips. First time I posted before watching a full video.
This is really inspiring and relateable. Nice to see how happy he is.
He's so animated and passionate. I would totally watch a series just on his progress.
He's so enthusiastic about everything, good stuff
Drugs Bunny it's called being high as a kite
"Drop what is bringing you down." That's a key in living a happier life. It's not easy, sometimes it seems crazy to do it, but it makes a HUGE difference in your overall health and outlook. Once you start dropping things, including people, you'll understand that pride doesn't come from what other people think, it comes from what you've been able to do and how much you're actually living.
Has real passion for his lifestyle. Nice to see
So I'm watching this for the first time and he brought up the book Rich Dad Poor Dad! I read that book when it came out years ago. This guy reminds me of me and he is doing what I'm planning on doing once my youngest is ready to go out on her own! My advice to this guy is to start and finish each project before starting another. It makes life a whole lot easier. Great video thanks!
Very cool dude, literally down to earth.
Yep,hes an awesome guy!
@@TinyHomeTours can you give update on this guy..alot of people are interested
i love the passion he has in his words and description of what he has done and what he is going to do.
FantasyCustoms4Life what city do you live in or by? I'm in Saginaw
I have never had so much fun watching this up beat guy . I have a place for years not off grid but mostly ,one thing at a time .I am over 70 and have a great place. Everybody vacation here life is good.
Where is the land? I looooooooove vacation! Thanks for the positive comment!
Check out my wife and I's new website... www.secretgardenalaska.org
this guy is pretty awesome, very positive person.
I'm so happy to see a young man farming! Good luck , the world needs more people like you!
Yup, I needed to hear Bob, thanks guys.
What a nice guy.. he has a lot of respect for the people around him..
Robert Stark.. you are inspiration. Thank you man!
This has by far been my favorite all time RUclips video. Please convince this guy to start his own channel.
Bill Pysell
What's an approximate cost of a farm / similar property size in this part of Alaska?
Bob Stark you're an inspiration to all people our age man! I loved the tour of everything! You NEED to do your own channel, and show people what you're doing, like, everyday. Keep it up man!
Bob, I have to say...this video was pure enjoyment to watch. The love for how you live and what you do just emanates from you! Many thanks from Wisconsin
This is very inspirational.
Thanks for the kind words!!! Trying to teach now with our webpage (and learn), www.secretgardenalaska.org Check us out!
thank GOD someone who doesn't have it all together like me!!! AWESOME!
I love his vision and enthusiasm!
He needs fences or the critters will win. Great video and lots of inspiration...
Bob you are so freaking cool!!! Keep up the goodwork bro...and thank you for your service to this county
look at you Bob.!! What! it's Crystal A from ER.. funny i randomly stumbled on this
Laila Of Alaska , Hey Laila do you know Bob?? This is Keo from Scotland.
I love you guys ! been watching for 2 years now from Philadelphia !
This guy is so easy to watch. Makes me think “why am I so materialistic”
Thank you so much
We have a website!!!!! www.secretgardenalaska.org
Deja Vu -- but still enjoyable second time around.
Very informative and Bob is great at telling the viewer about farming and living in Alaska. I enjoyed his sense if humor and stories. Thank you for sharing. 💖
this guy is so damn adorable
My favorite Bob quote: “there’s some good money in fruit man.” I’ve been tryin to insert that into as many social situations as possible. Mixed reviews so far, but you gotta try. Love Bob man, such a good dude
J S W: We still haven't made much money in the fruit... however, I have a beautiful baby and lovely wife, and they are worth far more than money! Fruits of labor are paying off!
@@bobstark7143 I follow your blog, congratulations to you and your gal on your beautiful baby!
That guy is awesome, great video!
Finally a great, genuine person.i am so very excited for you! I will pray for you to excel. You sir are a dreamer that makes dreams come true

Max's Off Grid Paradise
the truth --hey, why not just go back to the wonderful Stone Age ?
It's so uplifting to see and hear this great guy who loves what he's doing and is doing so well. Carry on, Bob. You are so popular and so deserving of all the good comments. You can get info online on just about any subject, so it won't be long before you are an expert and will be helping beginners. Good luck, and God Bless you.
This was amazing!
Thank you.
Good, inspiring, well done job. I would do 1 thumb ups if i could.
worry is your enemy , the things you can control ..." well let's not kid out self's you really have no control" The things you can't control and the wisdom to know the difference is all about the little things.
Stark!?!?!?! Winter is coming, Hail to the king in the North!
Thought it was good the first time and even better the second.
I could listen/watch this guy all day. Such a laid back personality. Also first video, and I’ve subscribed!
Thanks a lot! I'm sure Chris and G love your subscription! They are great people, and I am only one of many wonderful people they interview.
this guy has made me tear up with joy. he's amazing. does he have a Web page?
Im working on it, he is a great guy!
FIRST TIME I HAVE WATCHED YOUR VID, VERY INTERESTING BOB, YOU HAVE THE SPIRIT IN YOU TO MAKE IT WORK YOUR A MAN OF MY OWN HEART BOB, KEEP THAT SMILE UP, AND I PROMISE YOU, YOU WILL HAVE THE LAST LAUGH, GOD BE WITH YOU.
dude.. you are totally inspiring.. thanks so much for sharing...much luck to your channel.
I hope people make it to the end of this video. Bob you are rich with experience. Thanks for the insights. Wish you the best!
Thank you so much, the best to you as well
(In reference to your convo at 33:20) Cryosote. Not sure if that's spelled correctly, but here in the southeast it's a mixture of Kerosene and Motor Oil. Now I can't say the tree huggers would be too fond of you bragging about using it, but it DETERS ALL BUGS.
Good info, thanks!
Creosote is a bush that grows in the southwest. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larrea_tridentata kind of confusing those two things having the same name but a pretty neat idea. This this is the first I've heard of it, I might have to try that.
Bob's a great guy! Super swell, so glad he's doing well.
My dream what this guys got gonna on. Good luck to him
You should get some American Elderberry, from River Hill harvest.
I live in Yelm, Washington. Where in Onalaska is the food forest? I'd love to visit. Awesome vid!
Burnt Ridge Nursery, it's amazing!
What a great video, do you have any more information on Bob? Facebook,RUclips or Instagram?
He is a bit of a private person, no social media that I know of.
This guy is funny and yet so knowledgeable. Lets blow this guys channel up so he can live his dream. I'm rooting for the fruit trees!!!
inspiring !
Ok, show us your weed now 😂
Yorg Rayop 44:43
bahahahaha very observant
thats EXACTLY what i thought LMAO
That was very observant! You know that was probably all the interviewer could smell as soon as they walked in... I wondered why he didn't show them the back room 😂😂😂
Lol
id love to see more of this guys and his place!
