The Blues Brothers "Orange Whip" | How to Drink

- On this episode of How to Drink, I am taking a look at the “Orange Whip” from The Blues Brothers. In the movie, the Orange Whip makes its appearance after it is ordered by John Candy. This drink is on the lower end of the spectrum as far as alcohol by volume goes, nothing like a Martini or an Old Fashioned. It’s more of something like a guilty pleasure. Give it a try and I hope you enjoy. Cheers!
Orange Whip Ingredients:
4 oz or 120 ml Fresh Orange Juice
1 oz or 30 ml Rum
1 oz or 30 ml Vodka
.5 oz or 15 ml Triple Sec
2 oz or 60 ml Heavy Cream
Shake Over Crushed Ice
Garnish with Orange Wheel

Greg, love the videos brother, I have my bar staff watch them. Little Triple Sec trivia for you, the “sec” is indeed a reference to the French word for “dry”. In this case however, it doesn’t refer to the character of the spirit, but rather the condition of the Laraha and other orange peels prior to distillation. Keep up the awesome work!
Pinning this to the top! Thanks for the info!
Also it’s not just “sec” that’s French. “Triple” is French for “triple” as well.
Cool! I was wonder since triple sec is sweet rather than dry tasting.
@Fated Circles You think a brandy-based orange liqueur like Gran Torres, GranGala, or Grand Marnier would work better with reposado or aged tequila? That's my theory. Triple sec, which is single-note (orange peel!) goes better with the sharper, piquant blanco or unaged tequilas. The oak-aged brandies would naturally go better with the oak-aged tequila.
@Fated Circles I am partial to the Tommy's Margarita which is simply lime juice, agave nectar and tequila. It's the purest form of a margarita, even if it is no more than a glorified tequila sour.
I'm a fan of oak aged liquors and spirits like whiskeys, Chardonnays, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. I'm sure an oak-aged brandy base would be welcome in a margarita. The Mexican restaurant near our house uses GranGala ("the poor man's Grand Marnier") in their margaritas.
We called the alcoholic orange julius' we made in college the "orange shoelace". If you had enough of them, you couldn't pronounce julius, and it sounded like shoelace
*episode starts*
"well this is not the first drink he's made tonight"
No it was not.
*When someone drinks from the shaker it's not their second either, (I know I've been there :-D )
@@howtodrink dude this was by far one of the best episodes you done. If you've seen blues brothers 2000. It has some scenes that were filmed in my birth town. Kingston ontario Canada. Look it up it's kinda cool lol
When Greg starts the episode with a dance number, you know it isn't the first cocktail they've filmed that day...
Fair point
I appreciate knowing up front where the rest of the ep is going... :D
You know it's gonna be a good video when it starts with a 2 and a half minute praise of the blues brothers
I could have continued...
He's clearly too drunk, but he's on a mission from God to teach you how to make this drink.
I believe you mean a mission from Gah'd.
There's no such thing as "too drunk" Greg. If Drunkenness is the X axis and Entertainment is the Y axis, Greg is best above the 45° diagonal.
He's missing sunglasses... and... I can't remember what else, but I'm watching it again right now.
@@DanielBrownsan The deer's not!!
It’s 106 miles to Chicago. We got a full tank of gas. A half a pack of cigarettes. It’s dark. And we’re wearing sunglasses.
Hit it.
Sasquatch Hit it
Hit it!
So funny that even Fallout references it.
Hit it..
Made a poor person version of this today. Concentrated frozen oj, milk, vanilla extract, and rum. D-LISH! Just started watching your series and I'm quickly falling in love. Keep it up!
"You can take your four fried chickens and dry white toast...." RIP Aretha, Queen of Soul
The oddest things can trigger the most obscure memories, I guess that's a thing when you reach my age. But there was an Orange Julius booth in our local mall, it was a short, single-level like the one in Blues Brothers. Dimly lit, grimy. I remembered the OJ booth, shared with Pretzel King, always had a long line. And yeah, it's basically an orange milkshake...almost like melted orange sherbert. I never liked it because it always stung my throat, but my friends chugged it. Meanwhile, at the BACK of the mall, before food courts were even a thing, there was a bar. Just...a bar. In memory, it's painfully 80s with blue and pink neon. But, this video brought it all together with us kids in the center of the mall, waiting for OJ, while the adults were at the back entrance, chain smoking and listening to the Commodores on the jukebox. I don't know why I think it's strange now that a bar would be at a mall, when that was a thing in the 1980s. It wasn't a restaurant. It didn't serve food. It was just where the men went to hide while the women shopped.
Then the food court came, which killed the mid-mall grill/cafeteria. Taco Bell moved in. Then they built a $1 cinema with 8 screens. Then the arcade was put in. Mortal Kombat II came out alongside the first movie and THEN the bar just gave up the ghost. I'm shocked it lasted the twenty years it did. All that said, it's sad that the bar and OJ booth didn't have a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup thing happen. It seems almost natural. Then again, it was mostly single men during the day. The ladies didn't start walking in until around 8, where the bar remained open until midnight, long after the mall closed at nine. I guess 80s men weren't secure enough to have a lil OJ with their vodka. Their loss.
Don't ever sell this show to tv, I'd hate to think what execs would do to this mastery of RUclips gold. Cheers.
I'm here because of The Blacklist Season 6 Episode 1. At 19:19 into the episode, Dembé asks Raymond if he wants another Orange Whip. Immediately following Raymond's response (on the very next beat), he says the remainder of John Candy's line word for word, first to the gentleman that Raymond is seated next to, and then to a woman who was standing at the table who just showed up. So, Dembé's lines that are an obvious homage to The Blues Brothers is as follows:
To Raymond: "Do you want another Orange Whip?" Raymond responds affirmatively.
To the other two: "Orange Whip? Orange Whip?"
Short pause.
"Three Orange Whips."
I decided to find out what an Orange Whip is because I think it looks delicious. Greg, thanks to you, now I know that this is yet another great reference in The Blacklist to some great T.V. show or a movie, in this case The Blues Brothers!
I made one, don’t put too much ice, I did, also don’t be lactose intolerant, I am.
Advice as true as it ever was
Government thought it was a chem attack
Heavy whipping cream has little to no lactose. It's the fat not the sugar part of the milk.
I'm also lactose intolerant, and am considering making this drink with some coconut cream instead of heavy whipping cream. Maybe I should call it the "Island Whip" or something to that effect, since it will actually be a pretty sizable change to the flavor profile.
@@HaydenX Perhaps if you do that, use some funkier rum as well?
"Who wants an orange whip? Orange whip? Orange whip? Three orange whips." -John Candy
"It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas."
Traded it for a microphone.
@@howtodrink Elwood would say it was a great trade.
Fix the lighter.
Doesn't he say "cheap gas"?
@@mwilliamshs Nope. Regular gas. Back when we used that sort of thing.
i think you should definitely do something like an alcohol 101 and just explain briefly what everything is in the bar and how it’s made or what it’s for
I love this drink and make it all the time. I learned it here. I've made 1 minor change that makes a bigtime difference in how the cream-cicle flavor comes out. Use vanilla vodka. It helps the taste pop bigtime.
BLUES BROTHERS!!! Hands down one of my favorite movies of all time.
Wow! Production value even 4 years ago was phenomenal! Found you in 2022 and looking forward to binging even more!
Had to make this one. Easy sippins! There really couldn't be an easier, more accessible "cocktail" than this. I could have (too) many of these.
It's always a joy to hear someone who adores the Blues Brothers. One of my all time favorites.
Funnily enough, i actually clicked on this video because i remembered it as "the drink john candy ordered in Blues Brothers." My brothers and i favorite movie growing up, no contest whatsoever!
Love how all your bottles are dancing with you in the beginning, they're as excited as you are
I particularly like how Greg takes the time to respond to all of the comments!
I’m trying to!
Love your channel man! Just watched all of these in a row! I'm Rachel's Ambelangs brother she showed me this and now I'm hooked. Side note... you shown me that I'm completely uncultured in my drinking. Up until now I thought there was just long islands and frozen margs but no... you opened a whole new world for me and for that I am eternally grateful.
This is literally the greatest cocktail channel on RUclips.
Thank you! Glad you found it!
A lost art and interest picked up by someone in this modern era is remarkable in itself. Bravo.
just watched Blacklist S6 ep1 (2019) and Raymond Reddington's bulter slash bodyguard, Dembe recites the John Candy line in a bar scene....cracks me up had to repeat the scene to double check...lol
You must be the only RUclips person to make this drink. When I searched RUclips for Orange Whip I mainly got Golf instruction videos
I own the orange whip
You really screwed the pooch by not using Dan Aykroyd's Crystal Head Vodka in the recipe.
Ben Dover I said the same thing.
Ehh there are better Russian vodkas out there he probably used stoli cuz its been cheap and common as for dans vodka it wasn't around at the time of the filming gota rember what the blues brothers are like most likely not gona be a primo drink instead it will be a mix of rail drinks
He probably wanted to have the cocktail actually taste like something besides rubbing alcohol. That shite is nasty.
I say, when Aykroyd sponsors the channel, THEN he should use that vodka. Until then, he should use the soon-to-become-national-vodka Stolichnaya. (Ask someone who lived in Soviet Russia what that joke means.)
@@JakobKaine_BrickJAK Yea Stolichnaya is a good vodka, especially stoli Elite. Though gets little pricy for vodka
They actually got permission to have that chase in the mall due to the mall being scheduled for demolition.
One of my favorite movies of all time and I implore anyone who hasn't seen it, do so.
Great work Greg!
I'm making this tonight and watching Blues Brothers, love the show!
This was the first movie I ever saw on Home Video. I was 11 or 12 at the time and never stopped loving it. I have shown this movie to all my kids at that age, and when the massive pile up happens at the end of the second act, my kids started laughing and didn't stop for a week. I cannot overstate how much I love the Blues Brothers.
This channel is proof if you do something often and you do it well you'll succeed
I’m succeeding?!
How To Drink I'd say a 25k sub growth in a month is succeeding haha, you'll be larger than 100k sooner than you think mate!
Oh I hope so!
Me, my girlfriend and my newborn binge-watched pretty much every one of your videos last night. Simply superb. I love when you add in fun facts about the drink or about the pop culture surrounding it. Love your channel!
Thank you so much! Hope you’re having a happy new year!
You have a a Pearl Diver glass, and haven't done a Pearl Diver yet. I know you thought about it, but why not? Great show as always.
I need to find a new recipe for the pearl diver. The one I’ve got requires way too much effort to make and yields an unsatisfactory drink. I also need to go drink more examples, because I’m not even sure I know what it’s supposed to taste like.
I’m addicted to the Blues Brothers. Watch it every couple of years
this is a great plan
You got me to start making my own cocktails. Thanks Greg!
Blue's Brothers is a very entertaining movie and so are Greg's videos. A perfect match
There is a blues brothers statue in Rock Island, IL. That movie was great. How To Drink is great. It’s all great.
That’s awesome about the statue and thank you!
HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS, ALSO TRY HARRIS PIZZA
Yes. When the Blues Brothers song and dance happened, I knew my subscription was worth it.
Found your channel tonight and I've been watching back through the stuff that caught my eye; I think this is my favorite so far. When you asked about the last time [I] saw the Blues Brothers I actually said 'too long' just before you read my mind. (Also, the drink looks great, I'm going to have to try one when I get a chance)
“It is just.....alcoholic candy.”
DUDE, I’M IN!!!
Dude!!! I came across your video by chance. It was “recommended to me.” I don’t even drink anymore but watching you make the drinks is very entertaining! You have a really good, sort of, charisma. I really dig the old music and speakeasy type feel with your videos. You mix in just the right amount history as well! Love it. Subbed and belled!
Thank you!
Love it when you get excited about the episodes and have fun making them! It shows and we all like it too! This was one of your best.
This show is goin' places.
I hope so!
I swear I've never met anyone in person who even knows what the Blues Brothers is. Its my favorite movie of all time and I have NO ONE to talk to about it! Good Choice of drink brother.
I really don't know how you dont have more than 58k subs, this channel is amazing holy shit.
Thanks! The answer is that I'm very bad at the internet.
Even so, you are doing such a good job with your videos that people should know about you, I showed you to my friend and he was like wow the slowmo stuff and the camera work is like perfect. Keep up the good work man, I love your channel.
Recently only saw your new series, so psyched! I see the quality of production and hosting haven't budged. It's so rare to see hosts where their personality is so genuine and likable without gimmicks!
This was really fun to watch Greg! Keep the videos coming.
Dude, I love that you have 60K subs and you still take the time to love every comment mere seconds after they're written. I'm imagining you just shit-faced all day watching the comment section on your computer and genuinely getting ecstatic every time somebody appreciates your content.
After binging all of the past episodes, waiting for this one felt like an eternity. This channel is an absolute gem.
I found your channel a couple days ago and have been working through watching all of them and honestly these are my favorite videos on youtube. Keep up the great work and thank you!
Thanks so much Mark!
Fisher and Ackroyd were briefly engaged, but never married. I had to look it up.
Great show. I discovered it just stumbling around, and it's getting me through shelter in place and all the chaos that goes with it.
Thanks for that.
Cheers.
FINALLY!! I already binged watched your shit and waiting for the next one was killing me.
would love to see a video from on how you like to setup your stations if you were to be making drinks for some occasion
That first sentence is me exactly 😂
Greg, your videos are a thing of beauty. Top notch quality! The presentation, the recipes themselves, the quality of the spirits you use, the camera and video close-ups, the homage and history lessons....brother you have created masterpieces. Please continue to bless us with more wonderful videos. I have watched most of your videos a dozen times. I think I speak for most of the cocktail community when I say you are doing an outstanding job and we hope this grows into something much more. RUclips should be just the beginning......
This channel is the absolute best. So glad I subscribed.
Thank you!
One of the first drinks I ever had in my life and I like the fact that you actually have a video on it.
I aim to please!
I felt like you were a bit more candid in your small talk during the making of the drink and that was pretty awesome.
I love that movie and that drinks sounds delicious. A little bit if vanilla flavors and it sounds like you'd have a creamsicle whip. You should write a cookbook of all your drinks inspired by movies and TV shows. Keep up the great work
Does it pair well with four fried chickens and a coke?
Mr. Marvelously.
Or plain dry toast
Pretty much everything pairs well with four fried chickens and a Coke
I think you mean Mr. Fabulous!
Chicken wings or chicken legs?
Thankyou for this, the orange whip line has been a running gag in my family for probably about 30 years, I can't wait to make this for Christmas
Your family with thank you, then drink too many of these and fall asleep.
Would love to see your take on the Vieux Carré! It get's far too little attention and is very friendly for a drink that is 100% booze.
Love that this is my introduction to this channel, especially fitting with my best mate and I going to conventions as The Blues Brothers.
Based on all the hearts I'd say you're still drunk. Nice
They cost me nothing!
@@howtodrink, and they are worth just as much.
An orange whip was also a soft drink. There used to be machines in movie theaters, 7-11's, U-Totems, Etc. It was a simple machine that continually frothed and recirculated various flavors of non-carbonated fruit flavored drinks like cherry, grape, and of course orange.
This channel is so underrated.
Thanks so much!
Oh my God I remember my dad watching this film when I was younger😍
Oh my God he loved my comment😍 much love❤❤
best part of making drinks at home. drinking from the shaker
I'm literally 14 and have no use in watching a video about drinks, but the video editing is so good, just comes to show quality over quantity
Thanks man! Ive actually considered doing a series of “temperance drinks”, basically covering a series of real quality classic soda counter concoctions, think that would go over well?
" there's even some nazis, and they get run off a bridge, and that's great " 💖
your thinking of the wrong "nazis", keep your head out of politics
hello . the blues brothers is my favorite movie , and my friend sent me this video . i can ' t drink yet , but i watched this anyway because i love hearing people talk about my interests . when i tell you i was so so happy when i saw you talk about the blues brothers i mean it .
Your reactiom @4:51 is priceless. I can see myself drinking this at some beach bar in the Caribbean.
Watching the bottles shake on the shelf as he danced satisfied me.
I hate Illinois Nazis almost as much as I love this show
Hell. Yes.
AirForceBalls LOL. I was going to make the same comment. Guess we are brothers from another mother (or orphanage).
The only explanation for sure
I hate Ilinois Nazis too!
I heard those bums won their court case!
legitimately one of my favourite channels on youtube
I’m humbled and gracious!
Dude I am impressed to see your channel grow. It feels like just a few months ago you were crossing 20,000 subs.
Thank you!
I am definitely adding this to instructional videos. It's been a long time since I've seen the Blues Brothers. I should have a Blues Brothers themed party and serve Orange Whips.
You need to make the rounds on some podcasts and other RUclips channels to get the word out. Very underrated RUclips Chanel
This is a good idea, and thanks!
I've always wondered why the little spoon that came with my shaker had a long narrow tube for a handle, I would have never imagine that it was supposed to be a straw. Thank you for opening up my world and teaching me something new, senpai.
Thrilled to see new videos coming out!
Favorite movie ever. Was watching in 2018
Best subscription since Binging With Babish
totally making this one greg, gotta love drinking from the shaker, alchohol must never be wasted!
Going to be big like Binging with Babish! Should definitely collab
Yes two hairy men drinkings cocktails, cookings stuff. Make it happen!
I was watching it and they were playing that song when you started doing that. Freaked me out. The movie is the entire reason I googled this drink.
You're stepping into Binging with Babish's territory. You have to pay your dues... through a collab.
I’m all for it
Only problem is you'd probably have to go to New York if you're not already there. Great place to visit if you did, just really expensive.
I live like 30 blocks from him actually.
OH GOOD GOD YEEEEEESSSS!
Guess what, he did😂
That looks like a really lovely new summer drink to add to the repertoire

Awesome video! This will be added to our drink menu in the summer of 2018. Blues Brothers was a classic! The world misses you John Belushi.
Thank you! We also miss John Candy... and Carrie Fisher... sigh.
OMG!
first 30 seconds
slow motion cocktail preparation + his brilliant dance!
He's awesome :D
The dance is with me.
How To Drink , haven’t thought about this movie in far too long - thanks for the reminder! Gonna make me nostalgic: saw it during its first release run the summer after HS graduation; as as an adult, for years lived a block away from the road-to-nowhere part of Upper Wacker Drive. Chicago is a *great* town - can’t wait to go back & visit after this COVID mess is over!
Saw you on a Spazie video, im here to stay, great content boi
Thank you and thank you Sp4zie!
me too
I’m mostly here for the Blue Brothers quotes. In 1987 I was an exchange student in Germany. At that time Blues Brothers was a cult hit a la Rocky Horror. People would dress up, yell lines, throw stuff. It was a blast.
Best movie ever, "well uh, we'll talk to bob"
This is my second favorite all time movie!! And I can’t wait to make this for my mom! She’s a big fan of the movie too.
Dude I just found this channel. It's such a great idea and you do a great job making it different than all the typical drink videos. This channel is going to take off soon!!!
Fingers crossed, and thanks!
Made one, had fo work with what I have which is cheaper vodka and triple sec, didnt have any oranges either so the OJ wasnt fresh but its still a pretty good drink. Definitely will try again with fresh cuz I bet it makes a world of difference.
RIP Matt 'Guitar' Murphy :(
I love classic movies. I was listen to hip-hop one day and there was a reference to the Blues Brothers. I realized I had not seen it in 20+ years....so I watched it again. I think I enjoyed it more now then I did back then. I totally missed the orange whip. LOL! I think a nice drink after hamburgers.
Love your videos! Very entertaining, professional and informative. Just the way it should be.
On a side note, do you hunt? Lovin' the deer mount :)
I don't hunt, the deer is an antique taken by my grandfather-in-law in 1951.
Your channel has rekindled my love for cocktails and mixing. Can't wait to try out more of the drinks you make here :) Greetings from Germany
