The horsemeat came from Romania and was introduced to the food chain through Ireland by criminals. Basically counterfeit beef. We had a similar episode with chicken. These were criminal actions , not regular practice.
It should be noted that the horsemeat scandal wasn't so much a safety issue as it was a labelling crime. As with any meat, horsemeat is perfectly safe when properly prepared. The problem was basically one of passing off cheaper horsemeat as beef.
Oregon is just slightly bigger than the UK. Sorry, but KFC, McDonalds, Dominoes etc etc are not restaurants, they are fast food take aways! Of course we have them in the UK but you can find so many wonderful independent food suppliers who produce amazing meals at reasonable prices.
In Europe (Including the UK) the food standards agencies demand that additives must be found to be safe, if they are not proven to be safe they cannot be used in foods. In comparison the US FDA deems additives to be usable until they are proved to be unsafe. In Europe the cost to eat out is higher in large part because we pay our servers a living wage and don't force them to rely on tips to make a decent wage, we also only tip for exceptional service, generally we do not tip at all when eating out. Unlike the US which pays servers below minimum wage forcing them to rely on tips to get a decent wage.
In the UK all the supermarkets reduce Veg prices for Xmas....today I was in Asda....all of the Xmas vegetables were 8p.....8 pence....that's like 11 cents for 2kg of potatoes, or 1kg carrots, 500g Brussel Sprouts, 1kg parsnips etc......
Hiya, the USA washes their eggs to clean the shell ,in Europe we don't, the washing of chicken and eggs is because of poor farm/farming hygiene practices in the Usa,hygiene standards are higher in Europe so it not necessary. Eggs have to be kept in a refrigerator in the USA because washing the eggs removes the natural protection/membrane they have , eggs in shops in Europe aren't refrigerated, not necessary at home either , they're kept in cupboard or worktop, some people might refrigerate them that's their prerogative , USA reared chicken cannot be imported to the UK All cattle and sheep have to have an ear tag fitted when they're young ,the tag will be used to identify the beast all through it's life ,and allow it to be tracked and recorded should it be sold ,exported , etc and for veterinary records in any testing for health reasons. In the past unscrupulous people have put meat that has been deemed unfit for human consumption back in the food chain for human consumption so the tags were introduced to counter this .❤❤.
In the uk our health care is a service and a cost to the government, in the u.s your health care is a business and a cost to the public. It pays big pharma to keep you unhealthy hence the difference in your grocery shop and fast food difference along with relaxed safety
They still used beef-just less of it & substituted horse in for some of it. So they still tasted like beef-not that anybody in the UK would know what horse tastes like I suppose.
I am South African, but I have lived in the UK for 20 years. I was brought up to believe that British food is terrible, and really expensive. However, when I got here, I was really surprised to find that the food is really good. In addition to that, the cost of food doesn't break the bank. My mother came to visit from SA a few months ago, and she was horrified to find that the food over here was now cheaper in many cases than what she paid back in the Republic. What I love about British food is the variety. Because Britain has a history of embracing so many cultures (most recently loads of refugees from Hong Kong, Syria and Ukraine), the foods from these cultures have become staples in the UK. I can find 3 South African shops within 20 minutes drive from my house, and there are US and Eastern European isles in so many of the major food stores. However, I will say that I don't love British sea food. I grew up next to the sea, and I just don't feel that the sea food is that fresh. It isn't terrible, but It isn't great either. Sorry Britain, but you can't be great at everything. In terms of the horse meat thing, I grew up with horses, and I understand the resistance to the idea of eating horse. When I lived in Taiwan I was warned by my boss that I need to be careful about what I order, because I might end up eating dog (not sure how true that is). I was horrified and lived on nothing but Pringles for a week, before I got over myself. But when you think about it, so many cultures regard eating horse meat as normal. After all, its basically just a really fast cow.😜
Try some UK delicacies like Spotted Dick & Custard, Bubble & Squeak, Baked Beans On Toast, Faggots In Gravy, Black Pudding, Mushy Peas, Victoria Sponge Cake, Eton Mess & Bangers & Mash.
We have our own food chains over here. We also don’t routinely tip in restaurants and what you see on the price of food and goods is the pice you pay no extra tax on top it’s already included in the item
Nice to see a couple of intelligent young folks happy to learn about the world and actually take a minute to process and understand the information instead of just rushing through. Good job on your discoveries if the world

We found out the horsemeat was coming from Republic of Ireland, who were getting it from Romania. Yes my grandfather could tell horesmeat, as he was in France in the First World War.
Hey guys great reaction!! Theres a great video on USA vs UK groceries called: Our Groceries BRITAIN VS AMERICA - food prices in UK vs US.. Its worth checking out :)
The U.S. being bigger is irrelevant, the UK is a mashup of so many different cultures, the majority being Asian (Mainly Indian, Middle Eastern, and Chinese) and Jamaican, but pretty much any type of food is available in the UK.
These days in the UK they have tracing codes on a lot of the foods so that if something has happened in the process of getting it to the customer, they can immediately trace where it came from and sort it out. We have hugely stringent food rules here, and frankly it’s for the good. A huge amount of stuff you guys have is banned in many many places worldwide, not just the EU/Britain. Even in fast food, MacDs had to clean up their act years and years ago because we just refused to eat it. So now you have chicken nuggets made with chicken breast - there’s no mechanically recovered meat here in Macs. All chicken is proper chicken. The Beef they use is traceable, often Irish produced fresh beef. Free range eggs only. Organic milk for the kids etc. I’m not sure the US winning portion sizing is a good thing! lol. I had a holiday in the US and it was an eye opener. The portions were ludicrous- we were in a lovely place in Lake Tahoe, and they brought me this plate and honestly it could’ve fed 3 people. The waiter came to clear the table and thought there was something wrong with my food. I’m like ‘no, it’s delicious. there’s just far far too much of it!’. And that was the case everywhere. And don’t even get me started on the all u can eat buffets in Vegas. I cannot begin to imagine the food waste. I’d never seen so much food laid out in one place. Btw - your chocolate isn’t actually chocolate. It’s a) revolting because it has an ingredient that makes it taste of vomit (yup, really) and b) you have a far lower % Of actual chocolate required in your Choccy bars. Way way less. So it’s mostly crap and chemicals again. I don’t understand why they can get away with feeding you guys so many chemicals in food and drink when it is made far more safely for our market. It’s made better, has no high fructose corn syrup in, it’s minus all those ghaslty colourings, yet they still use all that for the US market. They are literally making you all ill, despite the fact it can be & is made far more safely and healthily. The fact that a loaf of US bread doesn’t go off for nearly 2 months is a v bad thing!!
Yes our prices are really expensive now not like it was before not every you see in that video is true inflation gone high petrol gone high and gas and electricity prices have gone high too it's absolutely annoying also Gregges are not just eggs over here we have sausage rolls vegan sausage roll pizza ect
"too" means "also" and "very". You should use "to" for everything else. eg: 1) I'm going to town. 2) Henry needs to see this. 3) You talk too loudly. 4) It costs too much. 5) I am going to the movies now, will you go too?
In Wales, we actually score more obese than the US! But we got more international food than you guys, you can't make lasagna, or Chinese, and you REALLY can't compete with our curries!. Don't compare London prices with the rest of our country. It's a different place.

25% more expensive to eat out in the UK, but when you factor in the US taxes and tips....

Eating Out - prices are more expensive as wages are higher in UK
It’s more expensive to eat out in the uk because, by law, we have to pay decent wages and pensions. It we don’t pay as much in tips

Lots of parts of Europe eat horsemeat, it is unusual in the UK though, and it was passed off as beef. That's why it was a scandal.
Hey guys great reaction!! Theres a great video on USA vs UK groceries called: Our Groceries BRITAIN VS AMERICA - food prices in UK vs US.. Its worth checking out :)
The foods in America fatten the people you see the difference in American’s faces look at the stars from childhood through teens to adulthood
Eating out is more expensive because the UK cooks at home 90% of the time.
Didnt say about the US eggs and why we don't keep the in the fridge.
Look in to that.

Greetings from the UK! We do have some nice food. Can't beat a Sunday cooked dinner pal.
You cant be hating Greggs. Its an English staple now.
compare it to like the Smallest state like Rode Island. The horse meat 'SCANDEL' was sold by criminals to some shops instead of BEEF.
Eating horses is literally no different to eating cows or goats in alot of countries. Animals is animals.
We don't have to feel like we've got tip everything as well..
Which is nice, they didn't add that to the price of eating out.
Hiya,Horse meat is eaten in several European countries , but not (knowingly) in the UK .❤❤.
Unless you eat out of Tesco's 😂😂😂
No our fish & chips are nothing like fries & fish tenders 😂
Our big Mack meal is like $8.50 in London don’t know what it’s like in USA
Uk is an island so yeah it’s small I think there are states that are bigger
Yes our prices are really expensive now not like it was before not every you see in that video is true inflation gone high petrol gone high and gas and electricity prices have gone high too it's absolutely annoying also Gregges are not just eggs over here we have sausage rolls vegan sausage roll pizza ect
Thinking you win on the basis of portion sizes isn't a win. There's a reason you have an obesity epidemic. UK isn't far behind though
Question 2
Yaaa you eat more than us. 😂
Yeah the horse meat thing came from the EU not the UK..

"too" means "also" and "very". You should use "to" for everything else. eg: 1) I'm going to town. 2) Henry needs to see this. 3) You talk too loudly. 4) It costs too much. 5) I am going to the movies now, will you go too?
