Leaving My Land - Zoning Violations

  • I was given 30 days to remove the structures from my land by the local township. I don't have a primary house on the property, which means I can't have anything else on it either. Erasing years of hard work in just a few weeks is a pretty tall order.

Shame on the people who did this to you!! It sure would be satisfying to go to their houses and make a list of all the zoning violations on their properties and then submit that list so they have to go through what you're going through😁

    That was entertaining!
The most crucial part of taking on projects like this, is having the self-confidence to know you can solve the problems as they arise.
Like, switching to the persuader (aka sledgehammer) or using tung oil to lube a big rod. 🤣

Regulations will ultimately kill the spirit that made this once great country thrive. Don't let these poor practices get you down. Instead, I would recommend someone like you build a strategic plan to run for local government. Be part of the solution to fix this situation for future generations. We need more of US in policy making positions.

Years ago when I was going thriugh Architecture class our teacher told us "make sure that the house you are designing and going to build for the client actually goes on their property". Many times houses are built on the wrong property. That is a lesson I have carried all through my career.

This is a valuable lesson for a future homesteader.. DON'T FALL IN LOVE WITH THE PROPERTY UNTIL!!! Make sure you do you homework. Investigate all of the town/states regulations before purchasing your off grid or even on grid property. Make sue you can perform all of the present and especially future tasks/plans you have for structures and land.
    Best wishes my friend.

I agree. Where I'm living you are not allowed to live, and especially off grid. Which is how I'm living. They gave me 24 hours to remove my animals & their "evidence of existance," i.e. fencing, feeding managers, water troughs, etc. And they harass me often about my truck & motorhome.
I'm glad you were able to move your stuff. And that you had another property to move it to. I don't, so I'm doing what I can do.

I hate places that try to control what you do on your property. We live in a vacation area but we have no restrictions on what we can do on our property. Someone always wants to cause you problems. You had such a lovely camp there, with nice buildings and a beautiful getaway. It is a shame to have to demolish that concrete room. It looked like a lot of frustrating work, especially since it was unnecessary. Sorry you have to deal with stupid people.

Make it into a Trailer shed for real IMO.
It would have been neat to see you fasten on some wheels onto the shed and actually make it a 'trailer' with a tow hitch.
I haven't seen/heard anywhere what your long-term plans are for the property. I sure hope you are going to hold onto it.
I would hate to see the township trolls push you out permanently. I'm betting you could come out ahead in the long term.

I feel so bad for you Kevin. You' and your wife are good people. You worked so hard building on YOUR land, then some town flunky says tear it down?! Who the hell do they think the are? We've got these "little Hitlers" over here in Massachusetts too. A few years back, an old lady up the street from me wanted to sell her field . The town "fathers" said NOPE! You can't because the frontage of the property was THREE FEET short!.... and they wouldn't allow anyone to build on it. She sold her house and her field and moved to Maine. Shortly thereafter the person WHO HAD FAMILY on the town board, bought the old lady's property, and immediately built a house in the field !!! They stopped a good hardworking American family from building, pushed her off her own property ! Then let their criminal buddies build on the very same land !!! I have a dozen stories just like this one that proves these people have no conscience, or empathy for anyone but their own "families" once they get in power. In short, they suck! Haven't we all taken enough?

Glad to know that MI has such regs out on raw land so others will not make this same mistake. And you are taking your baby GRUMPY TOAD ! It is a shame you have to do all of this. Maybe sell now? Hmm , if you didn't have bad luck ... Did you have to get a permit for what you did build? Township just wants $$$
I had a inlaw take a garage from my nextdoor neighbour ( 20 feet away ) travelled 5 miles bay farm tractor with the garage jacked and resting on a hay wagon. His wife followed with 4ways on THRU town of 85,000 on a sunday at 6:00 am. He won ! I would like to say you beet them at their own game .
I like the way you think !

I believe we'll sell the land in the next year or two and focus on the property I moved everything to. It's not as beautiful there, but there's less regulation. There's a $35 garden shed permit that I should have applied for and a camping permit as well. If I had applied, I would have learned that the zoning doesn't allow what I have. Lesson learned. I'll take my Toad and do better on the next property :)

A trailer company would have came and and move that for you for 300.00 I don't even know why you bothered with a trailer they would have moved it in 15 minutes a company that builds them and install they also move them

The only company in my area that does that said they won't move a shed that they didn't sell. If I bought it from them, they'd move it. But I built this myself. Tow truck companies wouldn't haul it because it's too tall for them to move legally. I had a small window of time to get it moved, I had to make it happen.

They just want the tax dollars. A big house brings in more property taxes than a campsite and a shed does. I guess you've gotta pay to play. Thanks for the support.

That would be about like them coming up and that I had to tear my living facility down first of all they would have I would force them to trespass on my property my living home and I would have told them that my home that I lived in was my house and it was educational and recreational you did not break no law you just wasn't smart enough to know that you didn't have to tear down they would have to destroy my place themselves that way they would have been the ones breaking their own laws

I'm glad I don't live in Michigan, it's all about what your political affiliate is. Democratic leaders are crazy in Michigan. Vote republican to be left alone.

Yes the D's are crazy, but don't assume the R's will leave you alone either once someone is in power they think it's their duty to run your life.

Watching you have to destroy all your hard work because some knuckle head decided to target you is appalling. I'm a pretty petty guy, I believe I'd find the most unattractive buyer for the property and sell it to them. Then the township and "that neighbor" would have to deal with that! lol
