Legendary Liverpool comedian Ken Dodd from 1979. Doddy cracks gags about 'the north' and sings about Lowry (Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs).
Not many of the old school left now, mores the pity, Ken Dodd one of the few. So many greats gone, Larry Grayson, Hinge & Bracket, Gracie Fields, Arthur Askey, Richard Hearne (Mr.Pastry), Beryl Reid, Arthur Lucan (Old Mother Riley), Dick Emery, Les Dawson etc etc.
This shows Ken Dodd - from the Mersey area I know so well - performing wonderfully. It's a well written song by Brian and Michael - their original performance was fine - but this performance is the best in the world for this song . . .
Makes me Homesick Im watching from Palm Springs California [A long story of how i got here]] Mother loved Lowry I found them depressing But now I understand. Oh I wish i was walking down Preston Market with my Mum. Linking arms Laughing and skitting . Happy days. [Im 85 years Old. RIP Doddy you were the best
Never see his likes again one of the worlds best entertainer’s. His one man shows were brilliant and they run over there time as always. Hope you haven’t booked a Taxi as he will be walking a long time haha. R.I.P Ken we still love you
Now Ken has taken his tickling stick through the golden gates. A great man of happiness, joy and pure talent. Our very absent friend Ken Dodd - Rest in Peace.
His funeral was today, and I couldn't help but reflect what a rare entertainer he was compared to todays trash,,,no swearing, no abuse, no hate or sarcasm,,,,,,,just pure innocent entertainment, and he was an Expert at it.
You are so right, most of the entertainment now is absolutely crap, it's all fighting swearing and abuse and that seems to be the norm now. I love this song, it's priceless. 😊😊😊😊
Even here in Dublin we sing this song at parties the good old days of the two ronnies and cannon and ball benny hill all those type of things love to all.
Met a doorman outside a Ken Dodd performance in Derby, asked him what time he was expecting to finish and his response was "God knows, we're already an hour past closing!" He wasn't even angry, he'd done a Dodd show before and knew he didn't finish until the audience had got their monies worth. A true gent
I even remember the BBC extending one of his shoes delaying the 9 o’clock news. He was that good. A great comedian, a great singer and a great loss to you, me and the inland revenue!
I went to see him live a couple of months ago and it was such an honour to be there and see something that is so reminiscent of a traditional vaudeville showcase. My sides hurt from laughing and I loved the other acts in his show as well - Andy Eastwood, to name just one. Afterwards, I wrote Ken Dodd a letter and, much to my amazement, he replied. Even more overwhelming, the letter he sent wasn't just your standard 'Thanks and glad you enjoyed the show, love Ken' - it was a proper letter responding to everything I wrote - it was quite emotional to receive, plus an autographed photo. He's just such a wonderful man and, sad to say it, a dying breed. Such a privilege to see him.
Squirble Nay wonder you think Ken dods funny,, Squirble ffs what are you on, bye the way what kind of fucked up name is Squirble, I bet you're English mates think that's funny as fuck, fuckin squirble
This was so true of the man, I saw him 5 years back and did the same, he wrote back a very personalised letter about the evening along with a signed photo, I just thought what a true legend and pro he was. RIP Ken
One of the best all round entertainers we are ever likely to see! Ken Dodd's repertoire is unmatched. Theatre staff working on his live shows are guaranteed overtime.
Hearts are breaking in Melbourne on the loss of this awesome, people's comedian. RIP Doddy ... and heaven is an even happier place now your making the angels laugh. God bless you.
I loved Ken Dodd when I was a kid. In my teenage years as a Saint John Ambulance Man at The Assembly Rooms in Derby, he poured me a cuppa and had a chat when I was called back stage to render some treatment to one of the shows cast before the show. A star and yet normal, noble gentleman at the same time.
Lovely warm funny man. Some of you might know he gave Barbara Knox her big break on Corrie as Rita, she talks about it on his edition of This is your life.
I once went to Liverpool where ken lived to try and find the jam butty mines he kept going on about; i wasted a whole day , 2 police officers were not much help , they just told me to take a left then a left then a left etc. Ill never get that day back again
one of our greatest entertainers.makes me laugh till my face aches.les dawson.tommy cooper.the two ronnies.on and on.we were lucky to watch the greats working there genious for our entertainment
I missed the originally sung version with a Salford accent. I lived in Lancashire for 10 years. When I first heard the song, I was preparing for my final exams at Salford University Student Village in late 1970s.
Seen him at the Ellesmere Port Civic Hall in 1998, came on about 6.30pm, was still going way past 11pm - Council employees running the venue were getting pissed off ha ha

Yeh, there will be another ken, a true legend and so versatile, a true all round entertainer. He never retired even though he probably should have done. The year he died he had shows booked for nearly the following year.
O 'lord I hope you have a place that befits this who fun and laughter to so many .I remember when I was a child Ken Dodd and the Diddy men always in all our prayers.

Really enjoyable. Wonderful Ken and the choreography of characters are brilliant. Thank you.

Wonderful comment, Lesley. Life has changed, hasn't it? Someone like Ken seems to be from another universe in these days of plastic entertainers.

God, this man is missed, especially Christmas time, god bless you Mr Dodd.
My brother met Ken Dod by total chance. He said (our mum ) liked him... he replied "Is she single?".. absolutely a one off. Fantastic comedian. RIP

Literally in tears of laughter at this. What a special one-off talent! Plus a great voice and fantastic version of one of my favourite songs. RIP Ken.
When people watch videos like this one of Ken Dodd any video of any comedian who has passed on the person's emotions will run wild
Michael Coleman - half of Brian and Michael, the duo that originated this song - subsequently penned Doddy's minor hit 'Hold My Hand'.
One of the best all round entertainers we are ever likely to see!
Ken Dodd's repertoire is unmatched. Theatre staff working on his live shows are guaranteed overtime.
