- The Ashes, 3rd Test at Headingley, Day 1: Here we are in Leeds. A fast track, plenty of pace and bounce, and a fast bowler to make use of it with Mark Wood coming back. But, wait, a minute, what's that? Is that... is that Mitchell Marsh's music? What an opening day of the third Test!

Mitchell Marsh barges into the team, team in trouble, makes run a ball 118, takes a wicket, what a player!
Great summary of a great days test cricket. As an Englishman it was just good to get back to another enthralling day of test cricket with the crazy ebb and flow that has been the theme of this series. Wood was incredible in both his control and fearsome pace and Woakes was not far behind, but our catching has been woeful and it let the Aussie back in the game. Although he was gifted a life by Root, nothing can take away from the supreme way in which Marsh played and created another wonderful story for the Ashes memory bank.
Not many hundreds are made without a moment of luck. Great day’s play, as you say.
Mitch Marsh, What a Legend! Pat Cummins going to run through these Baz/whatevers tomorrow hopefully 🙏 I want Australia to win ONLY TO SEE PIERS MORGAN whinge
Reckon you my Australian friend are going to be disappointed. England will smash it tomorrow and then tomorrow in the evening session we’re going to knock your blocks off 😂😂😂
@@vantheman1238biggest joke😂😂

We've got some toxic commentators in Australia, but thankfully no-one has heard of them beyond these shores. The fact that England has exported the likes of Piers Morgan, Nigel Farage and Jeremy Clarkson to the world is reason enough to hang their heads in shame. (I refuse to take ownership of Rupert Murdoch since he hasn't held Australian citizenship since the 1970s).
Mitch Marsh, bloody hell, where did that come from? Of all the things I could have predicted might happen I would NEVER have guessed that. I know he's a very dangerous player in the short forms but that innings was almost Stokes-like. Everyone else was really struggling but Marshy has obviously decided that two can play the Bazball game. Incredible.
Marsh what a player 🔥
This is one of the best counter attack cricket i have ever seen. 85-4 . Challenging conditions. And guy made a run a ball 100 😂😂.
Insane batting.
😊
Truly.
Should have gone on 12
He didn't though.
@@simonjeffs75 did he though?
Smith’s review for caught behind was the best moment of the day 😅!
Best day of this ashes series , excellent bowling by Mark wood,Even Woakes in these conditions was superb, then Mitch marsh counter attack was stunning..then Mark wood come back ,Cummins with ball again was superb, match very evenly poised if Eng Gets bowled out before 150/175 then definitely game over for England this series,if England goes past 254,then this match could go down the wire , excellent selection by England and Australia for this test.Austrailia could Play both Mitch marsh and Green in the same test and rest one of their quicks may be next test or the fifth test...
He batted with purpose and had something to prove. Great knock, Great Aussie counter attack.
Hi Geoff and adam ,i see excellent improvement in the batting of Usman Khwaja and Travis head from how they were batting few years ago...Good that team management has backed both the players.
Both delivering. Impressive.
Mitch's square cut was Robin Smithesque. And I say this as someone that adores the Judge.
Great assessments fellas. Balanced, well-researched, natural.
England- we are kings of Bazball
Marsh- Hold my🍺
10:05 Well done Geoff for keeping a straight face 👍
A little raised eyebrow is the only evidence 🤣
Professionalism
In 2019 Mitch Marsh said that almost all of Australia hated him. Well today all of Australia and the cricketing world certainly rose & applauded this cracker of an innings from him. Incredible comeback 💯🔥
Why did they hate hike though?
Are you farming likes posting this comment everywhere? Jesus that's pathetic
It really is.
Great job lads, thoroughly enjoyable listening and viewing. Not contrived crap or reading off a sheet.
Thanks a lot, nice to hear.
Patty in tears at a Mitchy hundred, we love to see it.
Ps lovely jacket Collo
Australia are back, Mitch is one of the best
Back? Where did we go?
I thought we were at 2-0? Not sure where we went...
Oli Robinson got taught a lesson by his own team mate on how to bowl if you want to start giving batsmen a send offs. If Wood talks a bit of trash, fair game!
Wood is one of the nicest blokes playing cricket
Somehow while bowling pies lol. As much as he is bowling dogshit, he is getting wickets and actually doing a job for his team, so fair play to him, if you want to talk the talk, you have to be able to walk the walk and at least in the bowling department he is. Batting not so much lol.
Fair call from the Aussie selectors
Stokes is the biggest hypocritical flog in cricket. Cries about spirit of the game and then doesn’t signal 4 lol
Marsh made a lot of people look silly last night, he killed it, but dropped on 12, changed the whole match
What an innings by marsh.
What a performance by Wood. ROCKETS 🎉
I gotta admit. I've never rated him plus he'd had so many chances. But he won me over here.
Great pace bowling game set up nicely Marsh what a knock great cricket series still well alive
Surely Stokes made some questionable filed placings , Bairstow’s stamp collecting group has been skipping fielding practices, and Wood will do well if managed well. The latter will be ok as long as he isn’t overused.
i won a bet with my brother today, but he decided on double or quits, when he asked me the wager, i blithely said, well if mitch marcsh makes a 100 we're even. Knowing that WOULD NOT happen.. Bugger.
Brilliant innings by Marsh has wall papered over some cracks... Warner's position very shakey, Marnus struggling, Smudge not in great form, Head been found out... need to bowl well.
Australia were 3-61, England were 3-65. Easy to blame the batters instead of just acknowledging it’s a bowlers pitch that is challenging to bat on (unless you grew up in Perth).
Warner and Marnus aren’t great overseas…not sure why they constantly get selected
Two tons in four Tests for Smith is not exactly out of form.
Haha, my thoughts exactly.
@@cmadelaide56 My thoughts as well. As soon as some of the Aussie batsmen struggled with the pace of the pitch, with the Australian's world-class pace attack, I knew the Englishmen were completely fucked. I won't be surprised if England is bowled out cheaply.
Realised today that Johnny Bairstow is a victim. A victim of having the ability of a grade cricketer and the fitness to match being thrust in to the test arena. The way he wandered off in the 2nd test was like a dementia patient.
Couldn’t watch the Marsh innings after Root dropped him 😂
Sorry but every Batsman facing 96.5 mph bowling IS scared of the ball.
Nothing wrong with saying that.
Might be time to try out Cameron Green as an opener so as to leave Marsh in as the all rounder.
You are kidding.
@@allanbriggs807 Certainly not. Green is a fine batsmen with a good classic technique. He's had experience as an opener for Australia in the World T20 championship in India last year. There's no doubt the end is nigh for Warner and there's no obvious candidate bashing down the wall to go in there.
From the current squad I'd be putting Marnus in to open. Warner gets out very quickly most of the time so Marnus is basically opening anyway. It's not like he can't do it. He's in a bit of a form slump atm, but he'll come good at some point. Having said that though, Cam Green isn't the worst suggestion I've seen. Probably worth a try. Travis Head would absolutely work I reckon but he doesn't want the job for some reason.
If it were me I'd be tempted to go outside the obvious candidates and give a youngster a go. The Pucovski experiment didn't really work, although he may yet get another chance. I'd be taking a look at Josh Philippe - he's a dangerous batter with a great eye and a fast swing, and he can keep wicket as a bonus.
@@woopimagpie My idea is that Green isn't setting the world on fire as a bowler (and coming in down the order there's too much pressure on him to score quickly). He could be encouraged to concentrate on his batting and his defence. And of course he'd make an extremely handy part time bowler. But he plays straight and in the V so he has what it takes to be an opener. Head is best left where he is. I wouldn't tinker with something that's working. If it came off it'd definitely strengthen the side.
@@stephencharman9604 Yeah, I can't disagree with any of that.
I am really happy for Marsh
I just don't understand how you get to that level and still drop catches like that!
At one point the Aussies were 0 for 40, Davey on 11, Uzzy on 11. I couldn't help myself from shouting at the television, bring Broad on from both ends.
Just gonna throw this out there… and we’ll have to see how the 2nd innings goes… but Marsh in for Head is maybe not a bad idea. The poms seem to have his number
And please, can we show Warner the door?
Sunny day forecast tomorrow, the weather gods shining on England again.
Is the expectation that it will be flat and good for batting tomorrow?
Heard all week what a good batting strip it is up there
Wood looked like a prime Jeff Thompson and marsh looked like a prime ian botham ...wait what 😂
This was Crawleys wicket- another fail once getting in. Get Stokes to open (seeing as he has finally given the bowling duties away) and voila they have a keeper.
So Stokes/Duckett/Root/Brook/Bairstow/Foakes/Ali/Woakes/Broad(Anderson)/Wood/Tongue.
Robinson/Broad likely out for injury/rotation
I seriously do not know why Stokes prefers Bairstow over Foakes as a keeper. Foakes has proven time and again that he is the best keeper in England and a very good batter as well. If he was there in the team, Australia would have been bundled out for 150 ish.
@@theviolingeek15 Maybe it's a gingers thing? Lol.
Two Gun players made a great comeback today
Great day of cricket, the crowd was pretty poor as usual, Marsh outstanding as was Wood, have to love Wood he gives everything, sadly he ruined my night but still out of all the poms he is one I am happy for when he does well.
All things considered I thought the crowd wasn't too bad. It's a raucous time at Headingley at any time, with the controversy of the last game it had the potential to get out of hand but it was pretty mild in the end. As Aussies we can't really complain about that, we certainly have no shortage of dickheads in the crowd at cricket matches.
And yeah, Mark Wood is fantastic. He gives his all, doesn't engage in any silly dick measuring contests, and by all reports he's a super nice fella. Gotta respect that. Happy to see him doing well, I just wish it wasn't against us!
Bairstow in not funny, on that we can agree. Unfortunately, he's not a very good keeper either. 🙁
Aussies are hard to core pros
Aussies were scared of Wood
You'd be peeing your pants as would most of the world...great fast bowling
Mitch Marsh didn't seem to be having much trouble weirdly. It's like he was playing in a different game. But yeah, express pace will do that to a batting lineup. Just ask Jeff Thomson. Mitch Starc and Pat Cummins both bowled super quick when they were younger, I bet they're wishing they could still do it now.
Lance Morris is probably our quickest bowler, might be time to recall him to the squad. Nothing like a few thunderbolts to liven up a game eh.
Marsh wasn't.
Geoff, you missed a button
So far it looks like a battle between the all-rounders. Kudos to Marsh for a brilliant WACA-like ton, but I hate all-rounders. Sure, they can grab the limelight, but more often than not they're unreliable. Give me a team of specialists (e.g., Carey vs Bairstow) any day of the week.
BISONBALL
how many players get 118 runs from 118 balls in a test match ???
One.
Calm down. Wood got out the 3 bowlers and a concussed Carey
Mark 😂wood torch Austrlia 😂😂 hey u won england 😂😂😂 u won series no. What torch 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
At the end Austrlia again won we all know 😂😂😂😂 poor England
If England Wana won the series 😂😂😂 then Indian deserve Indian fast spinners 😂😂😂.. Indian bowlers take 10 wickets in one over 😂😂😂😂
Will the Aussie bowlers get their shit together? Need some MCG Boland!!
With 13 wickets falling on the first day the pitch looks like a fast bowlers paradise. Hopefully Scotty can get amongst them on day 2. I wonder if the Aussies are wishing Lance Morris was in the team, he'd be pretty handy on this pitch if Wood's success is anything to go by.
Ifff England Wana won the series then leave Austrlia play ashes with Indian 😂😂😂😂 cricket team 😂😂😂 who never ever take wickets 😂😂😂
Another quite spiteful, embittered daily review. The Aussies are really pissed off at the moment eh? You're 2-0 up. Enjoy it.
They won’t be for much longer 😂
@@vantheman1238
You’re right
3-0 shortly 😂
I'm sensing some self projection in this comment
Don’t know what you’re drinking but stay away from the stuff under the sink.
You're seeing something where there's nothing. I didn't find that review spiteful in the slightest. Pretty balanced take on it all actually.
Is Bairstow the worst wicket keeper in Test History????
NO. But he is inconsistent.
@@allanbriggs807 name someone worse??
@@Shane-ko7lh The general consensus is that Kamran Akmal (Pakistan) was pretty terrible. He'd also get my vote, he was woeful. The Pakistan talent pool must have been very shallow indeed if he was the best they had.
If we're going on stats alone then MS Dhoni wasn't fantastic either but suggesting that openly is a good way to start a fight with anyone Indian, lol. He was a good team Captain though and an above average batter (for a keeper) so he kind of gets a pass for that. He was very quick running between wickets too.
I'd also put myself forward in the category. I kept wicket for Hawkesbury 3rd Grade for two seasons and I was truly terrible. Couldn't catch a cold. Broke two fingers and smashed a good Seiko watch (forgot to take it off and thought the gloves would protect it). No idea why they kept giving me the job, especially as I could bowl better than average swing. I would have been far more of an asset with the ball than keeping wicket but you have to respect the Captains decisions. We never won a damn thing except the drinking contests so I guess it didn't really matter. I faced Nathan Bracken once when he was an up-and-coming tearaway, ye gods he bowled quick. I still have ptsd from that bruising encounter.
