He's had several spells like this recently in different formats. His spell in the 1st T20 V Pakistan last year just before the World cup was ferocious - Pakistan were 21-3 and some of their batsmen looked visibly shaken at tying to fend off 97 mph rockets directed at their upper torso. Was sadly missing from the T20 World cup final after having a brilliant tournament. Over the last year or so It's no coincidence that England have tended to lose tests, ODI's and T20I's if Mark Wood hasn't been playing. He has made that much of an impact.
That spell reminded me of the fiery Test spells of the '90s, when the likes of Ambrose, Wasim, Waqar etc. would rip out the heart of the opponents' batting lineups. Hope to see him stay fit and keep firing for England through the rest of this series.
I think we all look back with rose-tinted glasses at those bowlers. If you actually rewatch some of those matches where they had speed guns, Walsh, Ambrose, Wasim, and Waqar's bowling was in the low to mid 80mph range for large parts of their spells. Granted, speed guns weren't really around when those guys were in their early 20s, but if you look at Wasim and Waqar speeds in and around 2000 games, it was low to mid 80s. They were 34 and 29 respectively when those games were played, so similar age to Wood.
@@tomb2840 Wasim slowed after 1997 when he was diagnoised with diabetes, he put on a little weight and lost that althetic edge. He was seriously rapid in his youth. It's a reflection of his skill he was able to effectively subsitute movement and accuracy for pace and mantain his poistion as one of the best in the world. Ambrose was also a great but for me this is more due to way he used his height and accuracy than out and out pace. I always thought Waqar was seriously rapid. There probably other bowlers in 1990s who were quicker than Wasim, Ambrose but bowled a lot of half volleys etc and who been forgotten about becuase their records were nothing special
@@MrBobsmith34 Oh absolutely. I know Waqar was very quick in the early 1990s. However, I do feel there is a tendency to exaggerate some of the bowling speeds of yesteryear though prior to speed guns. People imagine they were all constantly bowling 90mph and above. In the 1979 fastest bowling comp, only a couple of the bowlers got above 90mph, and the fastest on that day was Jeff Thomson at around 92mph.
Isn't it strange how the days of fairly regular 150kph Test bowling seems over. I've watched Cummins and Starcs speeds over the last 5 years or so, and although you'll get the odd 145/146er from Starc and the odd 140/141er from Cummins, their speeds are nice and solid but nothing crazy. Slow balls aside , Cummins averaged 84.3mph/ 135.2 kph in the last test and Starc 85.1/ 137. I miss bowlers like Mark Wood and regardless of anything else, I LOVE that he's back.
@realMaverickBuckley The best days of fast bowlers in recent history was that of Brett Lee, Shaun Tait, and Shoaib Akhtar. Those three were the absolute Kings of speed, with Brett Lee having delivered the fastest ball to ever take a wicket at 99.5mph (which is just insane)
@n0nenone Definitely true, I remember Jimmy when he started was regularly at 88-90mph. Or.. the reason speeds were higher in 95-2010 and slowed between 2014-2023 is the change in measuring systems. I wo der how fast Wood would have registered on the old gun.
Great Pace, Control, perfect line & length…..Excited to see more of this in upcoming matches…But have to appreciate Labuschagne as well…middling some Drives at this speed🔥
It is soooooo nice to see bowling highlights. Almost always the highlights of any match (from a bowling perspective) is limited to wickets. These kind of videos give so much more satisfaction. Please give us more of these ECB!
Mark wood now favourite bowler.before waqar younas is my favourite.last time he take 5wickets against Australia in Australia 2021 .he bowled with passion and full of energy.
One of the best spells in the modern times. Pace, swing, bounce everything. Most importantly he created a terror, fear in the heart of the batsmen and quickly changed the environment into England's favour. I can watch him all day. What a fast bowler!
Woakes is a swing bowler but he can too clock close to 140 kph on occasions. Wood is just express pace. Would be a handful on Indian pitches if he stays fit during the WC.
That stump rattling delivery was long coming from the first the delivery itself.... What joy it is to watch a genuine pacer bowling with extreme pace 🔥
Absolutely lethal. If our fieldsmen could take straightforward catches the convicts would have been skittled for 150. Labuschagne's sound effects were comedy gold 😂
Ohh that 90+ mph speeds reminded me of the good old 05 ashes harmison, fred & Jones. Aussies had to put up with their pace that ashes. If the English had archer fit along with wood that would have been special to watch
Truly amazing speed of mark wood.. What a fast bowler.. Such consistent speed also.. Amazes me how the batsman see the ball coming down the wicket at 95mph.. Rather them then me...
