I watched this video so much that I spot differences easily.
I watch the first mothered video always when I am depressed.
I'm really curious now about Echostasis since it's already been out. The way all 3ish games expand the story is pretty interesting.

That line gets me everytime no matter how many times I've seen it. It just always come at the least expected time.
I've seen people say Mother in the original game is the villain, but I don't see her that way: she has lost a child, and is now forced to relive her child's death over and over again, never being able to grieve. She is abandoned by her spouse and left alone with a thing that wears her dead child's face. Mother is repeatedly traumatized and by the time we get to the game, she is emotionally falling apart. The whole thing is really, horribly sad.
She isn’t being “forced”. Her husband can leave her anytime he wants to, yet here she remains.
@@pisssoakedbombas Experimenting with your own children to “get a better version of them” is abuse. Plain and simple. The mother knew about this, and now she’s complaining to her husband that her child isn’t the same again. Both the husband and the wife are to blame on this matter.
@@thefallenknight2354 I feel like the parents are depicted in a way where you can empathize with parts of their stories but ultimately see that their flaws and current status come from a combination of their lack of dealing with grief in a healthy manner and also their own greed. Their lost child has become almost deified in their minds because instead of overcoming tragedy they've created this idealized version of her existence in their minds to a point where they live in an alternate reality of their own creation. I think that might also be why they move and act in such an unnatural way from the player's point of view. But either way, my point is the player is able to feel sorry for them but also see that they're acting pretty fucked up. Now THAT'S what I call good storytelling.

This game is heartbreaking.
I remember crying when liana was calling out for her mother but she couldn't talk in her robotic body and mother was left to believe there was nothing left of her daughter.
Imagine a robot that looks like your dead child wandering around the house
God, this game is a masterclass in atmosphere. The VHS effects are incredible too.

this imitates the halting, surreal atmosphere of a nightmare in a way very few pieces of media are capable of doing. much praise to the artists.
I really wish there was a film or TV series with the exact same feel as this game. Although, what exactly that is I can't put my finger on it. It definitely involves the uncanny Valley, a world populated only by robots that look human and a general feeling of something being very wrong
God what an amazing atmosphere as always. Though I do find that the plot of the base game was perfect as it is - the whole hyperreality stuff is kinda flying over my head. I greatly enjoyed the simple horror of Liana's mother's grief warping into something horrible towards an echo of Liana that was made by her father in the first game. I felt as though, with the addition of HER/RED, the game shifted the focus from the titular mother. I digress.
Both HER and RED can be found in the word MOTHERED, so perhaps it's something of a trinity. Both Mother and HER/RED do talk of control AND sometimes act in a way that's trying to grab hold of your reality to warp it for their own needs.

"Red" also connects this game to the dev's first game, The Enigma Machine. I get the strong impression that this and the upcoming Echostasis are interquels between Mothered and The Enigma Machine. (Previous games implied "corruption" was simply an AI becoming self aware, but this game implies it is a much more monstrous phenomenon. This might explain why Red was reduced to the state she's in in The Enigma Machine.)

Okay, actually I had really hard time understanding «Mothered» and this part confused me even more. Guess I’m just gonna wait for «story explained» videos or something x)

I'll try to be short!
Mother and Father had two children - Brother and Liana. Unfortunately Liana has died, leading the entire family into horrible grief. Brother completely closeted himself, not talking or getting out of his room even, Mother would give her all to get her daughter back, same as Father who actually had some means to try and do so. Father works on creating AIs and the entire game is practically him creating a new machine, infusing it with his daughter's personality (called a Core) and brute forcing the AI to fuse with the core, just so it'll be not an obedient machine, but something much more advanced. This way he believes he can bring his daughter back.
Mother is stuck constantly seeing a machine who tries to be what it's programmed to be, fake being her daughter, but failing desperately as it's obviously not sentient and just follows a set of commands Father programmed it to do. Stuck in loops of machine misbehaving or behaving too robotic, up to the point she completely rejects the idea of it ever fusing and becoming THE daughter. She is ready to let go of her grief, ready to move on, she realizes the robot won't bring her beloved daughter back, but Father keeps insisting on trying, so...the cycle continues!
Up until the point the AI actually gets fused with the Core, but instead of it being Liana it's...something different than her, something completely new. Father sees it after the robot escapes, so he doesn't try again to recreate Liana, but saves this new robotic entity
I really love this game, so if you have any more questions, I'd be glad to answer! Hope it wasn't too tedious to read, haha
Basically, Liana passed away because of an illness and her father tried to preserve her memories to bring her back by building an AI that could be stored in a "vessel" or an artificial body. Nothing you see in Mothered or here is real, it's a virtual reality designed to train the AI into "becoming the real" Lianna. That's why she keeps going back to the exact same scenario. Since it's familiar, the father hoped the core memories of Lianna could awaken and bring her consciousness back.
But at the same time the company the father worked for used his work to build a virtual world where people can create their own dream realities and they also create an AI to manage it. The AI goes haywire and takes control over humanity keeping them trapped in the VR. THis AI is Her. And "Lianna" evolved into another intelligence that isn't Lianna but has parts of her core.
This all ties to another game, The Enigma Machine, where you learn that people connect to the Hyperreality where they can train AI's. So the Angel was supposed to be training "Lianna" in the first one, that's why at a certain point Mother tells you you are not Lianna, that you don't belong there, etc. But at some point the AI went bananas and took over and the Angel got trapped inside the VR. So here the Angel is trying to destroy the AI which also ties to the Enigma Machine. I recommend you watch that one. It's pretty weird too but ads a lot to the plot.

This must be the most plausible reason, but Liana’s father killed her by taking her core out of her, in order to plant it inside an AI to make a robot that will be similar to her, and pretend to be their daughter. The mother was forced by the father and was told to stay sustainable by not being able to grieve, nor complain about how their daughter became a robot. Liana was young or a teenager (I think) judging by how her parents talk to her and what we can say about her bedroom’s door.
The mother had to tell her daughter orders, eventually. But the core (Liana) who was inside the robot was controlled by the AI and the different things she had to do for her mother. And since this was the sequel aka the second part for the game >>Mothered
No way. I thought ECHOSTASIS was their only upcoming game!
this dev's worldbuilding gets more and more interesting.
To sum this game up Liana is a girl who died in the game mothered and possibly her dad said placed her core in a robotic body but when she gets a phone call (in this game) a person tells her that her mum is trying to find her core and that if she (Liana) finds it then she has to place it somewhere where she can’t find it and that way she’ll be safe even if bad things happen to her

Hi! Yeah, once you unravel the story the Mother is actually just a fairly normal mother. However, the whole premise kinda relies on the player thinking that she's the weird one up until the reveal(s). The title is meant to help solidify that illusion and avoid giving away the twist.

This is far superior, altho it breaks a bit the tension for being like that. The other version was simply dysfunctional, in a good sense. You stay puzzled.

Loved this sequel. Came here to watch in case I missed something but all I did get were those same 3 endings. Is anyone else thinking there is something else to be found? That white apparation that keeps moving around outside around the orchard and over to the driveway. I've even seen it at certain angles at the barn I think. There's got to be something to it don't you think? I also thought there were more codes to be found. I ran into the 726564 by accident in my first playthrough by going to the cemetary. List of six words but just in 0s appears and if you count the 0s it comes out to 726564. There were other dialogue texts through this game written out the same way. However I tried inputing the amount of letters in each word into the password box the same way but nothing happened. I just can't help thinking there is more seeing how Mr. Gavin's creative mind works.

does it bug anyone else that the mothers hand is attached to her dress whenever she moves her arm? i mean, it makes sense cuz in the game it states theyre in two separate realities, and this is what 'liana' perceives her as, but it just continues to bother me despite that fact😭😭 love this game either way tho

Loved the cool spook visuals, loved the concept of it being extras on the demo disc, thats cool~. Was disappointed by the story tho. So much weird jargon going on that I *guess* will be cleared up in this new game. Oh well~.

You're part of a family living in the town. Everything seems normal, but at the same time off in some way
I liked the first game more. It was more coherent and unique up until the end of the true path; mother ended up not being the horrific part. You were. That alone was enough to make a compelling and unique horror game that didn’t need anything else added to it.
But this game seems to have tried flipping that over for the sake of linking to another game that runs on the trope of “seems unrelated but actually is related” and I don’t understand why.
It always feels like horror games lose their charm and coherency the moment they go the route of introducing vague philosophical themes and complexities that _sound_ deep on the surface, but ultimately don’t answer anything. It’s not satisfying, and as several people have commented, it just makes things more confusing.
In the end, I feel like if only the first mothered existed and this one didn’t, no real substance would be lost. This game doesn’t add anything.
