@@zaneraza4044I guess that’s one way to tell everyone you haven’t watched many of his videos without actually saying you haven’t watched many of his videos. 🙄
Tom's advice about compressing down is a myth. As long as the goose or duck down jacket/sleeping bag is clean, then it can be compressed for months without a problem. A good quality goose down product can even be tightly compressed into a rock-hard ball for years without the down itself losing any loft. That is a fact.
Thank you for visiting my country. Never ever have I dreamt of my favourite photographer heading to Mongolia. It will be very DRY cold there. Hope you'll have an amazing experience. And photos of course.
My wife has just retired as a teacher and she went to Mongolia to teach English and help with some charity work so she spent a lot of time with locals and their families, EVERYONE she met were really lovely, extremely helpful and friendly, I can’t wait for my chance to visit.
Hey Thomas, this is already an interesting excursion to watch. You're not only an excellent photographer, but you are also an excellent story teller. My husband and I love your videos. We are looking forward to your next video in this series.
I have never been stopped for carry on gear, although I have never had to travel with a big prime. The trick is to have a good sized personal item that holds a fair amount of gear, but does not look bulky. My typical travel photography kit all fits in the personal item, so if forced to - I can check the roller and still keep my camera gear on me. Gear includes: 100-400, 24-70, 16-35, main body, backup body, point and shoot, and usually a prime also.
Thomas, for me this was a wonderful video. In my younger days, I had to travel to many remote areas of the world to provide engineering assistance. Multiple flights, multiple hotels, and long drives can be very tough. You handle the travel quite well, better than many. Believe me, bag paranoia is quite real!
This is a great example that although getting to see finished images is a treat, your videos easily stand on their own. What a cool journey. Looking forward to the next one.
Man that’s was all kinds of epic !! Looks like some insane amount of organisation too and glad it all went to plan!! Will be interesting to see how the batteries hold up in that cold weather
Happy to be watching your videos again. I’ve been a long time follower and used to watch all of your videos. Took a two year hiatus after I started having kids, but watching more of your videos and love that you’re still making content
Loved Mongolia - spent over 12 months working there, a correction though it is not Chinngis Khan Square it is Sükhbaatar Square in UB, easy mistake to make I suppose, he does make a formidable appearance overlooking the square but its named after the bloke on the horse in the middle. Anyway, they had ice scupltures of the Beatles when I was there - absolutely brilliantly done. Loved my time there and met some wonderful and friendly people. The place should be on everyones bucket list.
Seriously: There is no better way to start a trip than giving an overnight stop in Istanbul! a) This Metropol is one of the most interesting around the world b) Turkish breakfast buffet is awesome c) prices are moderate
I do it all the time. Tip take off waist belt before boarding and develop a technique to make it look light when you put bag in overhead locker. I have an Atlas 40 litre bag
Congrats on the half million subs! With videos like this, you’re not far from one million! Keep up the amazing work, Thomas! Thanks for sharing these incredible moments!
It is a great country with friendly people, i went to the Altai mountains in the west to see the Eagle Festival, wow that was something special and what a way to remember my 70th birthday
LOVED the view of the mountains from the plane. Also, the light looks so pure, empty and clean. Having a great trip, thanks, lol. Looking forward..........
Goose down(sp) I believe is not the same as real eider down. I still have a Swiss made bag bought over 50 years ago, now made into a great odd shaped blanket. No pin feathers period. Super compensable. Well worth the cost . Looking forward to some great video's from your trip. Stay safe.
Great start to hopefully another fantastic series and you’re not alone about airport stress, I’m sure there are many of us like you that go through the same turmoil when travelling. Enjoyed the newsletter too and looking forward to next weeks video
As super strenuous, huge logistics, video gear and power cells, the 800mm! OMG! I was entranced! Have a very successful trip. I steer away from goose down! Get goose down, wet and one, smells like a dead wet fowl ! Above all, ENJOY! Geez! ONE W e e k! Bravo! ell
The Altai is amazing! I spent 3 weeks there doing multi-day kayak trips in 2004. We paddled the Katun, Argut and Chyua rivers. The people were some of the friendliest I've ever met. Looking forward to the series!
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto well now that you mention it Gavin from fototripper might be a little better 😂😂😉…. Not really but we can let him believe what he wants!
I just came back from my trip to Japan, Australia and New Zealand. My carry-on was 11,5kg (max. allowed weight is +- 7kg). It was no issue at all. I think they don’t really care much about weight as long as you don’t carry really big bags as carry-on.
Hey Thomas, trick from a Canadian... Wear your down jacket on your shorter legs of travel. You'll have more room in your luggage, keep the jacket fluffy and you'll be comfy in the plane! Great adventure can't wait till next week!
Mongolia and the altai are just stunning. Never in my entire life have I seen that many beautiful landscapes with almost no people around. Enjoy your trip! Maybe after mongolia you would like to warm up a bit. Going to Namibia or the Northern Cape in South Africa.
Great into episode, I enjoyed it very much. I worked in Mongolia for three years, got to see the entire country, and loved every visit, especially the western area you’re in where I drove from the Russian border to the Chinese border in 3 days. I’ve even been in that same supermarket but bought vodka instead! If you have a day free when you get back to UB, a visit to Hustai National Park to see the critically endangered Przewalski's horses is well worthwhile. Looking forward to your results!
Best wishes for the rest of your tour. You've paid the price in getting there. Hopefully your return journey will be filled with happiness and satisfaction.
Hi Tom, Hope you have a fantastic time, looking forward to seeing the video next week. I have seen and walked past leopards in South Africa so I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures. Have Fun
Just saw Mongolia on a Netflix production and fell in love with the landscapes .... SO can't wait to see next weeks episode ! Have fun and enjoy the wonders of Nature ! :-)
I got really good pictures of a snow leopard right here at the Sacramento zoo a couple years ago. glad I didn't have to go through all of what you did to get shots.
Wow a video focused on searching for snow leopards would be an absolute dream. I’m currently reading the snow leopard by peter matthiessen and funnily enough the secret life of walter mitty and that snow leopard scene specifically was one of my biggest inspirations for jumping into photography. Safe travels mate
I live only 2000km away from Mongolia, I've always dreamed of going, never been yet so your trip will be inspiring for me! Can't wait to see the rest of it!
Argh! i was hooked from the get go couldnt wait to see the Landscape and snow leopards then you left me hanging Lol another great video , and a few laughs thrown in . enjoy your trip
I felt stressed watching your stress. Travelling really does me in. Plus I’m a bit of an insomniac. I envy people who can sleep anywhere, anytime etc. 👍📸
So funny, I was so much reminded to my recent trip to New Zealand, when on the return flight in Christchurch my cabin bag was weighed and had almost 12 kg instead of the allowed 7 kg... It was a bit of trouble before I could pass. Now I bought a vest with big pockets where I can put lots of my photo gear.
Thanks, Tom. That was actually really enjoyable, and entertaining. Just need some drone shots of you in the airport terminal - the place is big enough. What could possibly go wrong?
I think Frankfurt Airport might be easier/quicker route to Ulan Baataar. Also a Virtual SIM Card can be bought online that works in Mongolia so you can take it with you.
I can absolutely relate to how stressful travel with kit is. I'm lucky that Lufthansa/Brussels with whom I travel 90% of the time don't generally weigh camera gear, and the people at checkin seem to understand you are carrying expensive gear and be more tolerant with oversize and so on.
Traveling through airports stresses me out. When your traveling through different countries like that do you find that the airport staff speaks English well enough to workout flight issues like you had? Jason
Glad you were lucky with your luggage :-) Yes, it's mostly in your head, all those worries. But my last travel, I spent 9 days in Morocco without my luggage... unfortunately my tripod was in the main luggage, so it meant me hand-holding a camera for the whole trip - not my favorite way of photography. Picked up my bags just before I left Morocco again. Fingers crossed for my next trip in February
Look at you walking through a massive airport with loads of people and talking to the camera! Go you! 🙂👍
@@zaneraza4044Tom notoriously hates talking with people around. It's actually a major step for him.

Haha. It was boring. Thank you.
I’m so excited for this series of videos, Mongolia is one of my bucket list locations.
