- In episode two of the Doug Aldrich Guitar Method, the Dead Daisies and former Whitesnake guitarist shows you some essential licks for becoming a killer rock guitarist, and examines how Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads' playing influenced his style.
Thanks Doug , you taught me so much and saved me a lot of time. I started taking guitar lessons at 8 and now 65. I’ve never stopped learning. Rock on.
He explained it so well I almost thought for a split second I could come somewhere close to sounding a fraction as good as he does playing it.
Its realy gold to hear Doug talk about the awe he was in when hearing and seeing these rock stars with all the ammunition they have...while being one himself now...and probably some kid is now watching him...and become one too because of the inspiration Doug has given him.
Finally a great rock lesson with the right feeling and attitude, unlike most today's vids... Rock on, Doug!
Doug looks amazing! He is just fabulous! He super charged me to practice harder and keep learning! Thanks! Rock on!
I would give my entire existence to sit front row and watch randy play for just 1 hour and 30 mins
Doug and Ritchie Faulkner have become my new influences. I will always love Satch,Vai and Nuno but I’m really coming to appreciate the Doug and Ritchie as picking up a torch and running with it.
Agreed
Now THIS! THIS! is Guitar School! Thank You \m/\m/ Rock ON!
That fig 20 is 3rds in key of G. 123 1 234 2 345 3 etc. Slash does this brilliant run up the neck on the you got no right song his VR album. Great technique video through! Thanks man!
Love this. Great example of more playing and less talking between examples. Thanks so much for taking the time to share.
I remember when my Friend Matt showed me figure 20 in high school after taking lessons from Doug in Thousand Oaks, CA. Then Lion got on MTV and he went on tour... Funny here he is essentially teaching that same lick / exercise in Guitar World all these years later. It's still an impressive lick :)
That goldtop Aura is amazing. Wowza! 🤩
I always thought "Doug Aldrich" was a pickup designer LOL! I had heard of his pickups for awhile but never heard of him personally. I can't believe I missed out. Dude is spectacular.
So crazy! I saw Van Halen 4th row right in front of Eddie at Red Rocks and I was speechless also! My wife asked why I wasn't excited.....I said I am in awe!!
I was the same way and yes about 4 rows back from right in front of Eddie.. and I was just like frozen the entire show.
I just saw Doug & Dead Daisies at Guitar center in Rochester. Good guy. Very personable and down to earth.
Doug Aldrich! :) Thanks for a great Daisies show in Osnabrück, Germany! Managed to see him play from first row! :D
Great video, at the start I was thinking this looks like its aimed at maybe intermediate level players; but Doug delved into some stuff that more experienced players can think about and sink their teeth into!
Behind Jimmy Page, this man is one of my all time favorite rockers. Not only is he a stellar guitar player and musician but also an awesome guy who is always ready to give credit to others. You Sir, are a true gentleman and a genuine dude. You are right up there with all the greats that you give credit to!
Doug is definitely one of the nicest guys in the business.
One of the best guitar tones I ever heard were the first three songs from Burning Rain at Frontiers Fest in 2019. I got to talk with him after the show and told him about it. He was actually interested in what I had to say about his sound. I told him that I had spent most of my adult life doing bass session in the New York studios. Doug is the real deal! He's a standup guy who can play well, and one of the few with his chops who is still humble, yet, can out play the best of them.
EVH and Randy were my heroes as a teenager learning guitar in the 80s... ahhh, memories. The 90s just fucked up rock music.
Happy to hear nearly every commentator enjoyed Doug's series. GW hasn't had a win in a while and as easy as it is to pick on Paul Riario's hair, I'm still pulling for them. Started reading 26 years ago.
It's the Internet. It's where the dick heads breed. This is a great video. People forget 26 years ago, you'd have to pay for content like this. Incredible.
I first found out about DA on this very rare tribute to Van Halen "tape" I had. Yes! I said tape! 🤣😂
To this day I am still puzzled about some of the people who played on it. Some were just not very good covers. DA covered "I'm the one". He absolutely KILLED it!!! OMG! I couldn't believe how this unknown guy was sooooo damn good! He doesn't use a whammy but didn't need to. He blew me away how he was able to take Eddie's licks and completely marry them to his own style. It was flawless and didn't hinder the raw power of the song that Eddie had. I kept asking "WHO THE HELL IS THIS GUY?! WHY IS HE NOT FAMOUS AS HELL?!" I was sold!!!! There is a part of one of the last solos in that song where I kept thinking I like his variation of the phrase even better than the way Eddie played it. You have to understand....I'm a huge Eddie fan, and never thought it possible to like someone else's playing of one of his solos better than his. I don't want to digress...I know there's gonna be Eddie haters who are gonna start saying crap about him, so I will not be checking back on comments. Don't want to detract from the purpose of this vid; to highlight the greatness of DA. Thank you.
definitely wammy bar on DA version, of I'm the one
@@vox1003 you remember where in the song? I don't recall ever hearing a whammy. In fact, I have NEVER seen him touch a whammy. Please let me know.
@@kojam1 maybe you should listen to it again
Doug’s a great guitarist and he mentions a few but he overlooked one of the best guitarist of our day George Lynch why does everyone skip right over Mr Scary !!!!
Lee its simple.. all these pussys dont mention him because they cant play like he can! either can i, but i would not be the guitarist i am today if it weren't for lynch. nobody wants to talk about whats hard ar challenging for them... simple as that, its a principle of physiology.
Not meaning to drag him down but Lynch was more attitude less musician. He did some cool stuff but he never did anything completely unique. He was just not an innovator that is why musicians don't mention him.
Mr. Thundermaker stupid logic
Dudes an absolute monster, underrated too.
Yea! Love the riffs & how you were too inspired!
You are awesome Doug!!
Style and grace- we don't deserve Doug Aldrich.
His pinky is longer then my leg damn I’m jealous
Thanks Doug 🤘
Figure 19 is absolutely 👏🔥🎶💯🎸🙏🙋
Amazing play Amazing talk good story
3:16 That is the most beautiful thing I have heard in a while.
What a great player! Very modest
Cant beat that beautiful Les Paul sound
I love your music forever rock on ❤🤘🎸💯
GOD Bless You 🎸🎸🎸
Oh yesss! Thank you! 💪🤘
Where’s part one ? Where can I find the tabs?
Great video! I always learn something from Doug.
Educational and fun video
Legend ❤
Great stuff
But Randy learned and was influenced by Eddie Van Halen there is a documentary where he and George Lynch are blown away by eruption and there both trying to figure it out
It’s priceless , RIP Eddy and Randy both amazing guitarists 👍👍👍
Dang had no idea he was this good... nice
Coolest guy in guitar community.
The better version of Zakk Wylde...I love Doug’s playing
and that is your opinion :) Everyone is entitled to theirs.
Doug is a helluva player and a great guy. Frank Marino is a monster. Check out 'Tales of the Unexpected '. Marino is very flexible in styles he plays. Wylde is a joke.
MrZeddie15 plus he's sober, compared to Zach in the past.
MrZeddie15 he and Steve Vai just killed it in Whitesnake by the way too.
Barney Fike
Yeah when he started with Oz he had potential; even when he went full on country he still shined. His songwriting skills are underrated. But when he went for that Captain Caveman schtick it just gets lost in the parody of it it's ridiculous
Am I dreaming or is he tuned to Eb?
He is indeed, he's said in the past he uses it to help bend further
Figure 21... is that a classical piece of some sort?? Can anyone here tell?
I like Doug's playing. He's kind of an old-school and non-schooled player, a 60's born guy, more of an intuitive and gut player, who learned by studying the classic albums amd trying to learn the "classic" licks and ended up developing his own way of playing by doing that; and less by getting formal guitar education, and i do aprecciate and i think that the world has to have some shining players like that for every era. Guys who learned to play by themselves, self-educated players, who play more by instinct and less by school. I dig that kind of players too, as much as the schooled Vai's, Satriani's, Petrucci's, and so on.
i wonder if the All seeing eye tat helps Doug when hes running out of licks at a show :OP
Jesus I love his tone! It's so thick I could chew on it
Killing the Dragon is what got me hooked on him, SUCH an incredible album. Licks, riffs, songs, tone, he did it all on that one.
Nice...
Great style, but I would to know how he gets that sound! That ain't no Gibson LP there. Ok, Doug, now you need to do a tutorial on that classical style please.
shure pickups, practice , les pauls, marshalls, his signature pedals and thats Doug Aldrich !
Saw Doug play live last year in Belfast with the Dead Daisies and got to meet him afterwards. Great guy! He even laughed when I told him although I was happily married (to my wife) he was the only guy I would maybe "turn" for!!
😂 (maybe) 😂😂
Pete Banks was already doing that kinda stuff years before Randy Rhoads.
Randy Rhoads died two weeks before their show in California, and was cancelled... heartbreaking..
I wonder how Doug feels about the playing style of Vivian Campbell, a personal hero and major influence on my playing.
I wonder what amp he is playing through
Sebastian Bach if he played guitar LOL
Что за модель гитары?
Ooof that suhr aura
Anyone know what guitar I’m looking at here?
This dude might be illuminati, did you see the tattoo? That's heavy duty!
What kind of guitar is that
Whats the name of the song of 3:17?🎸🤘🤘🎸
He's an Adept see the All seeing Eye of Lucifer illuminated on his arm?
That's a schenker Thing . Roads Took it from MS.
look at his illuminaty tattoo
was just thinking the same thing
Gustavo Rivas might be this, art work for a record cover? albumsymmetal.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/all_seeing_eye.jpeg?w=150
He also wears a Mjölnir around his neck.
Have to pay the Piper for fame and fortune you know!
surely
Doug's left hand has always been very weird to me. Thumb all the way back, fingers perpendicular to the neck at almost all times, totally non rock looking. Yet so fast and clean, and rock sounding.
It's the same way Dimebag played, and it makes sense for stretching and reaching, as Doug explains here.
Show
.
It's all about the feelz... ERock and Jason Richardson should learn from this guy... He's like Gary Moore on steroids
Is that how you created your voice?..
When did it become cool to put duct tape over amp logos?
When Marshall & Co don't want you to use their logo without paying them something
The reason the Logo's are covered is because Doug, like a-lot of other pro's, Endorse other products. It would not be fair to those company's who support Doug, to show or "display" other products in vid's like this.
I don't understand this, Doug is a Marshall endorser, don't he? Marshall's logo appears in practically every Guitar World video, so why cover the logo for an endorser?
@@sbrave somebody else is paying him/or not endorsed by them, gear and cash involved, gotta make a living!
Wath is the model of the gold guitar?
That's a Suhr i think
Thank you
Yup, it's a Suhr Aria. I think they're still in development on them for release this fall, but they unveiled them at NAMM in January and some of their signature artists have been spotted with them.
Is an excelent guitar
Suhr Aura but they are only limited edition
Eddie and Andy both openly borrowed half of those licks and tricks from the master himself Michael Schenker who shredded melodic hard n heavy tunes way before them, and they knew it..
Small hands means nothing!, BUT then, how do you contort your BACK to do that?! I have a friend 5 years in the game, who has stunted growth on his left hand from breaking his growth plate in his arm when he was young. His hand is notably smaller and he can do the same thing,(blowing my mind) that you're doing with those tiny hands. Ive played for 30 years., not as good... My hands aren't exactly much bigger, I have just never been able to relax my overly bent wrist. Tilting the neck forward only does so much. Position is dependent upon location of the neck. Posture has nothing to do with it either.
You can have fun at his dirt
where is the links to the tabs D:
willo wilson look at his fingers in slow motion and listen for the notes..I find this method is much easier than learning from tabs
willo wilson it’s a “guitar world” interview....just pick up the magazine, tabs are in it.
🤙🤙🤙🤘🤘🤘🥃🍺🍻
He keeps throwing out little chunks of shred, I bet he had no idea he was up to 30 examples
Doug is was of those guys that has to try not to be cool... he's a shredder
Yepp Dougy ... you can play excellent but you can't explain how to do. You can show ... but you can't explain.
You know this would be a better of a lesson if the camera person would quit zooming in on his crotch. could have used a better angle on the guitar itself or not zoom in so much.
obviously he has a deal with the devil
His illuminati tattoo
who is doug?
Current guitarist for Whitesnake. Has played with Dio, Glenn Hughes, Hurricane, Lion, Revolution Saints.
Jeffery Lord He was the guitarist for Lion,Burning Rain,Dio,Whitesnake,Revolution Saints and is currently in The Dead Daisies. Amazing well rounded rock/metal player.
Lance Ross thx he has quite a resume. great lesson.
Matthew Jones he’s not in Whitesnake anymore
Wrong, he has not been in Whitesnake for several years now!
blues + rock n roll , and no SLASH !? WTF!?
Skinny jeans ? Really , Doug ....?
No Randy Rhodes or Van Halen licks ! He can play great guitar though.
Guitar World likes people with tatoos and homosexuals.
What’s up with that tattoo,Doug??
that ain't legato
below average
I can't stand Doug's playing. He adds nothing new to the Great Guitar Conversation. He reminds me of Joe Bonamassa in that he's good at "licks" but has zero personality on his own, and is very overrated.
1970borntorun Dude, you really sound like a jealous troll. First, Joe Bonamassa is an amazing player and great song writer. His latest album Redemption is killer. That said, can hear your new innovative album on Apple Music? I’d love to give you some feedback on it.
Just read the comment.
I would have to disagree. The last Whitesnake album with Doug and Reb was an actual surprise. It actually had something new in Hard Rock that’s been lacking for a good while. So I think he has contributed in a positive way to the history of Hard Rock music. But since then, I haven’t really heard anything new besides Greta Van Fleet that was worth listening to. Same ole same ole.
Most riffing guitarist today are on the Hard Country side of music. Bro Country music.
