For many OG One Piece fans, this was the scene where we all fell in love with One Piece
When this moment came when I first started this series slightly more than a decade ago, I knew this series was going to be my favourite. After so many years, none has topple One Piece in my opinion. Not even Naruto, Bleach, Inuyasha, Dragon Ball or even the current hype, AOT.

I read One Piece over about a month 2 years ago and this was the moment when I went, okay, maybe the hype is justified. It's the first of two times I cried reading.

Yup all he knew is he trusts her completely, people accused her of killing Usopp who turns up minutes later not dead,, there are fish pirates everywhere and the leader is some supposed tough dude with a huge bounty, then he sees her in the town square crying and stabbing her arm yelling the leaders name in anger. And this. Is all he knew before agreeding to help her cuz she is his friend and someone hurt her. If thats not a good captain I dont know what is

This was the scene that really made everyone’s jaw drop. The emotion you can see in her eyes and luffys scream of promising to help her, it’s truly something special. I think we can all agree one piece was good from ep 1, but this moment is what hooked us for the hundreds of episodes to come.
Luffy considers Shank's hat to be his treasure and he's always telling people to not touch his treasure. I love how he takes it off and puts it on Nami's head, almost as if to say "she is part of my crew and therefore also my treasure, nobody touches my treasure!" :D Love this scene!

Luffy's " Of course I will " made him my all time favourite anime character.
I think the reason this moment hits so hard is that we have all seen just how long Nami has been doing this on her own, despite seeing Bellmere die and pushing the rest of the town away, so we know just how desperate she is to ask anyone, and especially Luffy, for help.
The best part is luffy didn't even knew her past and still did that ... That's what makes this scene so special..and luffy a great character

This moment was incredibly powerful. Especially when luffy put his hat on her head. He gave someone who steals from pirates his most prized possession and was like hold this for me while I go beat this dudes ass.

@@ARMY_ksoo it’s like watching DBZ Dubb I think majority can admit dubb is better, with Naruto I think sub is better but the dub they keeping up even with the emotions and stuff with one piece those who started with it from the beginning it’s understandable why they choose sub , I started with One piece dub beginning of the year then switched to sub on 600 something episode cuz they were slow with the dub to compare I feel like Luffy is too loud on sub on dub it he’s voice feels natural and the is a lot emotion in dub I think I cried when Ace passed on , I will admit some dub are not good

Luffy didn't even know who Arlong was. What he looked like, what he was doing there, how strong he might be, his motivations, anything.

I feel this is an extremely underrated moment. He put his most treasured and sacred item on her head to show how much he trusts her as a nakama and that he will always have her back.
This may not seem like much to those who haven't seen every episodes before this. Sure, the hat is important to him... However you need to understand that up to this point Luffy never allow ANYONE to hold the strawhat, not even his own crew. He even lashed out at Nami for just touching it a couple of episodes earlier, which is why she was so shocked and moved about him willingly trusting her with it. Especially after she betrayed them to some degree.
To Luffy, that strawhat is everything. It's his symbol. The hat holds more value for him than his own life. And he used this moment to show that he trusted Nami with everything he have, including his life.
I agree with everything you said except the moment being underrated. Almost every one piece fan I know fell in love with OP in this very moment and we talk about it all the time.

This is such a master stroke of storytelling. The message of this arc is about learning to rely on others. Luffy makes a point later in the arc about how he doesn't know how to navigate or cook or etc. That's why he has a crew. But, this part right here also tells a beautiful message about how learning to let people help you relates toward good naturally triumphing over evil.
Arlong is a dick. The only people who want to help him are his followers. But, Nami's story is so tragic, she has a whole town that wants to help her. Of course, that would have lead to more tragedy. But, her tragedy and goodness also inspired Johnny and Yosaku. When all seemed lost for her, when everyone she cared about was going to die, it was that inspiration that saved them. Yeah, they couldn't stop Arlong either. But, they COULD stop Nami's village from throwing themselves at an unwinnable battle.
One Piece does this a lot where the climax of the arc has some miracle happen that makes Luffy look blessed. But, really, it's just the natural results of the long string of cause and effect set forth long ago. It seems miraculous that Nami's village was spared, but Johnny and Yosaku ended up where they were as a natural result of their inspiration to help Nami. In a roundabout way, Arlong's cruelty set this series of events into motion. Good triumphs over evil because more people are inspired to conspire against evil than they are to help it. People helping each other isn't just good for you, it's good for the world. It's the advantage we have over evil.
It's just such a beautifully, masterfully done message. This is why this scene made me fall in love with One Piece.

And her whole village had been being patient and praying for Nami's success with her deal with Arlong, hoping this little girl's sacrifice would save their village and ready to welcome her home as a hero. So when the deal was inevitably double crossed and Nami's efforts were shit on by Arlong, they were all ready to go to war not just for the village, but to avenge her. Nami was never alone, even when she didn't know it, she was always loved and supported.
But in her adventures she found more friends who would stand with her, and she found someone strong enough to intervene on their behalf. None of which would've happened if Arlong hadn't tried to screw over a little girl. If Arlong had been straight up, he would've been a 100 million berris richer and Nami would've saved her village. Instead he tried to be the kingpin that had it all, and brought down the thunder. Now years later, he's on a life sentence and Luffy is hero to Fishmen and Merfolk everywhere.
@@3Rayfire That's an excellent point about Luffy being the hero of the Fishmen! Everything Arlong wanted, Luffy actually achieved. But, Arlong was too much of a greedy ass to reap any of the satisfaction of it.
Also, I'd like to add that the revelation of Joy Boy ties into this whole narrative of people wanting to help people who help them/bring them joy. Joy Boy is the good guy because he brings people joy. And, people want to help the person who brings them joy.
This stands as a fantastic counterpoint to Doflamingo's speech about how "the winner decides justice". It's a point often made to say that "good" is only decided after the fact, and that is how "good" always wins. But, Joy Boy demonstrates a different explanation for good's natural tendencies toward success.
The fact that luffy gives his treasure to someone who's a thief shows how blindly he trusts Nami. Basically he have her everything he had.

Knowing what we know now about the symbolism of tattoos in relation to fishmen, this scene and the reveal of Nami’s new tattoos are so incredible. Oda is an absolute genius when it comes to execution of themes.
Before watching Nami's past I thought she would be that stereotypical character that always hits the mc just like Sakura but when I saw this it really made me cry nonstop. I used to say I hate her but now she is one of my fav anime characters😭

When Luffy took off the hat and put it on Nami, it was signifying him protecting her. At that moment we knew Luffy was about to fuckin HANDLE IT.
I feel like this was the first really good arc that I watched in One Piece, not that the others are bad but like, this one was the first arc that was really epic and emotional
I don't think there's a bond among the Straw Hats that has the emotional dept of Luffy and Nami. Defeating Arlong was personal for Luffy. Luffy not only defeated Arlong, he broke that which Arlong was very proud of, his nose. Then Oda solidified their special bond in Drum Island by having Luffy climb a mountain to save Nami.

The ones saying "finally" or "just ask for help" are kinda dumb, the whole point was that Nami was trying to do everything by herself so she was the only one in danger and suffering. She says "I decided to fight alone" or something along those lines a few times during the flashback.

True fans understand the profoundness of Luffy giving her his mugiwarabōshi. It's seems like a simple gesture but it says everything about Luffy's deep anger/rage against Arlong but more so how deeply he feels about Nami and all his nakama. Normally he will stop mid-fight to go get/save his bōshi and nobody can even glance at at it.

As a childhood Naruto and DBZ fan, I never got into one piece because "narutos better" and all that bs as a kid. Well I started watching One piece with my fiance since we both grew up on DBZ and never watched this and needed a show we could enjoy for a long time. When we hit this episode I remember telling her "alright, I love this show, and not just like a little bit." Were around 360 episodes in currently in half a year of watching only 2 nights a week max. So good

My English teacher in high school told me that the hardest thing in life is to ask for someone's help. Nami didn't know what kind of person Luffy was when she first met him and asking someone for help , especially a stranger is the last resort, when you're down on your knees and have no other option.. I've been reading this manga weekly for over 12 years and this is still my favourite moment, and the reason why I love Luffy and Nami are my favourite characters.

The best thing about this episode for me is the fact that the crew was ready to strike as soon as they knew what was going on. They were just patiently waiting for Nami to actually ask them for help. They didn't know about her past, and they didn't even know who Arlong was or how strong he was. Absolutely zero hesitation.
