    The part where Sam says you won’t connect with life resonates with me on a deep level. Started mindfulness meditation this year as I noticed I’m completely a slave to my negative thoughts. Boy has this mediation opened my eyes the exactly how lost I am, would really recommend this practice even if you don’t get enlightened just having the attention to notice your not present is a huge step for someone who tends to get lost in thought.

    This is how meditation should be taught to everyone, non biased with no religious context, only a pure consciousness point of view.

    Sam Harris is magnificent. Listen to Sam a lot and read his books. Sam is also describing what Eckhart Tolle similarly states in his books, with additional valuable content. Both are excellent authors and refute pseudo science and are real intellectuals.

    • @CampingforCool41
      @CampingforCool41 7 лет назад +10

      I'm surprised you say Eckhart Tolle refutes pseudo science, because from my memory of reading one of his books he occasionally ventured into some pseudo science. He's dead on about living in the present, but he always seemed to just be ripping off earlier authors in his presentation.

    Philosophy is criticaly important in current days, it's importance haven't diminished not a bit. As we, as human species transit from one way of living to another, we must have someone to remind who we really are.
    And in nowdays when information is simply overfloaing our mind and senses like unstoppable wave, to remember what is really important is a hard task. A hard task, for those who work in field of philosophy of ethics.
    I'm really greatful to Sam Harris for his work.

    • @solarnaut

      ay, there's the rub! ... some things in life really are "simple, but not easy."
      Most everyone knows of better choices they could be making for mind, body, and "spirit," but the addictive temptation to NOT remains a strong one. "We all know this day is coming," when life's end will close the door on possibilities, but Sam is suggesting we strive to WAKE UP before then.
      From the celebrated 'to be, or not to be' speech in Shakespeare's Hamlet, 1602:
      HAMLET:
      To be, or not to be: that is the question:
      Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
      The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
      Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
      And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
      No more; and by a sleep to say we end
      The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
      That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
      Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
      To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;

    We are fortunate to have someone as articulate as Sam Harris to snap us back to reality. "What is the point of life? Is anything sacred? These questions do make sense -- and there are answers to them. The answer is a change in attitude. However at this time I am also reading Michael Pollan's book "How to Change Your Mind." What immediately strikes me is that almost everyone who has looked at broadening consciousness through psilocybin or LSD micro-dosing has come to an awareness of a greater consciousness independent of the human brain. This runs contradictory to something that Sam said about consciousness being a function of the brain. Hmmm...

  • @rr7firefly
    @rr7firefly 7 лет назад +6

    Just wondering if Sam's talk was accompanied by that dorky organ music when he presented at the AFA Global Atheist Convention. It reminds me of the creepy music that is sometimes playing in the unreal atmosphere of a funeral home.

  • @michellehayton8984
    @michellehayton8984 10 лет назад +8

    I agree with a lot of the things said here but I am not an atheist, my beliefs are closer to what Eckart Tolle teaches, which is a spirituality not based on any particular religion. There are a lot of things science cannot explain because they are beyound human understanding. I feel a deep connection to existence especially when I am meditating alone, it is like there is an awareness within me and all around me that feels me with a deep sense of peace and stillness. I do not like to call it God because the word has been so misused, but there is definitely something, some kind of power that binds existence together and creates new forms all of the time

    • @SoundWaveTrax
      @SoundWaveTrax 10 лет назад +6

      I got into mindfulness by reading "The Power Of Now". It changed my life but then I realized the book was filled with assumptions that I didn't buy when I read it. The central message is the same with what Sam is talking here, but he takes a more rational\scientific approach compared to Eckhart. He doesn't make any assumptions about the Universe based on the experience of meditation or presence.

    • @michellehayton8984
      @michellehayton8984 10 лет назад +2

      I understand, but it is not an assumption to feel connected to existence because I know I am!

    • @SoundWaveTrax
      @SoundWaveTrax 10 лет назад +2

      Well no, but Eckhart tried to combine his views with science in a way that is disingenuous. Read the opening part of "The Power Of Now". It talks about quantum mechanics as if it had anything to do with this experience.

    Yes, and it is common knowledge. Therefore you do not have to quote anybody on it. It's like quoting pythagoras before making a basic triangulation,or Pasteur when temperature treating, or Newton when using integral calculus. Or Aristotle when applying basic logic. Plagiatism is something completely different.

      Why do you believe in God?

    • @destinybarnes5571
      @destinybarnes5571 8 лет назад

      +jo Why should the existence of God mean that nothing bad happens and everything is perfect? What about the concept of duality (also related to a belief in a soul) that you can't have the good without the bad??

    • @jnbalmer448
      @jnbalmer448 8 лет назад +4

      Destiny JB Because the "belief in a soul" has little philosophical, and no scientific evidence to support it. There's nothing that indicates a soul exists, it simply sounds comforting so the myth gets propagated. What we think of as a "soul", is in fact our experience of consciousness, emanating from the brain. At this point, neuroscience has not found evidence that consciousness continues past death, so it's silly to believe that we live beyond our earthly death, when nothing indicates this is so (besides wishful thinking).
      Let me know if I can clarify.
      - Jo

    • @arthurclarke983
      @arthurclarke983 8 лет назад +3

      +Destiny JB Well, of course, it may depend on how one conceives of god. Most people assume god can only be the god of the desert monotheisms. Is this how you view god? If so, then to answer your question, because that god is a contradiction.I mean, that god orders you to pay tithes out of your limited income, and to do good and avoid doing evil. This is fine, of course. But if god can fault you for the good you choose not to do (as in the good Samaritan story), then he should judge himself and send himself to hell. Christians claim he has total power and knowledge, and infinity to work with. He cannot blame me for acting selfishly when he won't use his power to prevent the suffering of his creatures-- yet he does.

    • @destinybarnes5571
      @destinybarnes5571 7 лет назад

      Art Clark thats not the god i believe. I detest that idea as well but I shoudlve worded my response differently because Im sort of an agnostic, but only on the account of the idea that maybe the human mind can't comprehend something of that nature. which is comforting to me because I think this world would be such a better place if people asked more questions instead of trying to have all the answers.

  • @mykfak4625
    @mykfak4625 10 лет назад +4

    These are the same teachings taught by Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadatta Maharaj half a century ago (nothing different from Vedanta which is thousands of years old). They used minimal religious context while imparting the wisdom. In fact, when answering questions raised by people from the west absolutely no religious context was used.
    And people like Eckhart Tolle (The Power of Now) speak the same thing using terminologies that they invented. Now if you don't give credit to the source of this knowledge, it would be injustice. Undoubtedly, this Oriental wisdom is gaining immense popularity in the Occident today. Right thing to do would be to pay respect to the source of this Great knowledge and of course understand and imbibe these teachings.

    I am not targeting Sam here, my point is mainly regarding Mindfulness Meditation, which is being propagated as a 'new' cutting edge psychological advancement. Whether you agree or not, there is a very clear attempt to promote MM as SECULAR meditation, as if Vipashyana is non-secular.

  • @frankingifu

    So true Nipuna, it was interesting however, to check out this stream of thought anyway. It's all good, but I felt a kind of a 'oh, so close, but so far' feeling. Perhaps, when getting too egotistically intertwined into this 'true science of the mind', such a tendency is natural. However, I respect their freedom of beliefs, and thank them for sharing.

  • @evilyig
    @evilyig 11 лет назад

    It's interesting how similar mindfulness meditation is to sexual gratification, while being so very different at the same time. The act of singularly focusing completely on the sensations you are experiencing and escaping from the constant need to wonder how you're going to be feeling or what you were feeling or what you're constantly wanting and what you're constantly needing. I wonder what Harris thinks about the psychological "flow state", which is also similar.

    You see, the system of copyright was started by westerners. But when they take help from other sources, they become 'native informants', or 'subjects'. Countless research on Yogis and Buddhist mediators have been published but the credit of the same goes to the one who observes the phenomena and the Yogi, who actually in a way creates the phenomena is called 'subject'. It's like giving award to the photographer who captures Bolt completing 100 mtr race in record time!

    Michael, thanks for identifying the same. But I would also like you to know that Buddha is not the first one to teach Vipashyana. In India, we know the divine Shankara as Adi Yogi. One of the book, in very brief, contains most of the meditation techniques. In all, it contains 112 techniques of meditation. The book is called Vigyaan Bhairav Tantra. The very first technique, out of the 112, is the Vipasyana, aka Anapansati Yoga. Adi Yogi predates not only Budhha but also Krishna and Rama.

    Well, SH knows - off course - where the earliest describtions of the tehcnique is from, and he mentions this on his homepage.
    Now with regards to plagianism, in science the term would be applied under totaly different circumstances. Off course there may be a lay use of the term, that I am unfamiliar with.

    Man this is SO depressing! It's a stark reminder of the amount of time we waste and the lack of time we have! It's fascinating but I'd almost rather be ignorant of this information. I just wish he could say something comforting like he's found evidence that we won't experience an eternity of nothingness when we die!

    Does it matter where it came from, who he "stole" it from, or whatever? It is the message that matters.

      Feel free to keep your Buddhism if it's working for you. Sam is showing that religion is not a prerequisite for deep moments of inner consciousness, that such moments can be experienced by subscribing to a few rational beliefs about the nature of consciousness.

    howdy, when I did this, I lost sense of where my arms were and I found myself becoming increasingly anxious (I have anxiety disorder and fear of psychosis) at one point of the video I head a crowd of laughter (Probably from outside) and had a rush of panic (I actually feel at ease when I have panic sensations because it tells me I'm not going crazy XD). I remember reading somewhere that meditation could be dangerous, but this was when I was a kid. How should I handle this? Should acknowledge the sensation and chill will it? Meditation makes me feel really weird so it tends to provoke anxiety within me...

      Exactly, acknowledge/notice/feel it with no reaction or whether it's good or bad, no label of what it is, like how you deal with random thoughts while meditating... At least this is what I do.
      I've never tried medication, came close though, but after reading about all the side effects, It just deterred me. It can help people though, I guess it just depends on the individual.

      Alright sweet, ill keep trying then. Ive tried two different kinds of meds for anxiety and tbh neither made/make too much of a difference with anxiety, but it really helped with me with controlling the bouts of rage that came from frustration.
      Anyway, thanks a lot of yer input. Much appreciated.

      +bazz boyy: Try to clear your head and think about the innumerable millions who feel fear in varying degrees in their lives. The fundamental presence of fear, like many other properties is biological. Why it manifests itself in such inexplicable ways can be understood and must be contemplated on individually.
      To begin with the human brain isn't evolved to be scientific or rational in the socio-cultural context or else most of us would be good at physics, arts etc and at being well reasoned which clearly isn't the case. The mind isn't our buddy; even the best minds have to work extremely hard. But when trained it will accomplish stupendous feats.The training will be a life long endeavor; the reason being it will be tremendously enjoyable rather than what it might appear at this moment. Consider a small analogy of a marathon runner- it never becomes a cakewalk but something about it is obviously pleasurable to the runner.
      The point of this video is to ground us in the present moment which is the grandest expression of reality. Thoughts are like passing clouds, sometimes light sometimes dark. But the sky i.e. the mind stays. Your anxiety and fears while perfectly normal have become disorderly only because they haven't been dealt with. You may accept that you have a medical disorder which can be kept at bay with prescriptions but remember you will never achieve your maximum. Forget maximum you will struggle forever. Only you may heal yourself. Many ways to do it- i would recommend the hardest route cause its the most efficient. Face your fears head-on. Start with baby steps. Its ok if you lose sense of your arms, your reality. Gradually let your mind take you to the darkest alleys of feardom. Feel weird. Feel the fear. Feel its awesome power and eventually realize its nothingness. Never forget it is only happening inside the head. A mob chasing you with machetes is actually scary because you can really die. Whats happening in your head is your mind fucking with you. Allow it. Push only as much as you can in each sitting but don't forget to recognize at the end that you consciously chose to engage with your fears. That's strength. I could tell you in detail but i think it's better to let you walk alone. The beauty of realizing the tiny victories will chop your fears like a dagger through warm butter.
      You have already begun to answer your question which is in fact a much deeper question with a very profound context- "Should i acknowledge the sensation and chill will it?" Chill with it. Do nothing about it. Just observe. Eventually even happiness and chilling will have to be replaced with pure awareness. But that's for later.
      I apologize if i did not make sense to you. If you want to discuss more i would be happy to over mail.
      Remember- nothing is happening. You do not have a disease. And always believe in yourself. There is no substitute for that.

      Meditation is probably the best way to get rid of anxiety. However as you described it is normal to feel anxiety, dizzyness or nausea when starting to meditate. Your brain is probably not used to it and therefore it tries to make you stop it.
      Just keep doing it. Search and read about meditation. Do it everyday.
      I dont know about meditation combined with meds. So if you have meds and want to quit it I urge you not to do it hasty.
